It must be seaworthy and have adequate buoyancy. You must carry the appropriate safety equipment and ensure all on board know how to use it. The Houtman Abrolhos is situated about 40 nautical miles west of Geraldton and comprises 122 islands clustered into three main groups. It is an extensive coral reef system that stretches for about 45 nautical miles north to south. The islands are low lying and do not present a very good radar picture. The name Abrolhos is derived from the Portuguese language, and means "OPEN YOUR EYES", which is exactly what you need to do when navigating in this area. The Abrolhos is a hazardous area and requires careful pilotage. The reef systems are steep, rising from relatively deep water, and can remain unseen until close by. Good visibility is necessary to navigate through the reefs. Visibility is impared when the sun is low or ahead and when the water is glassy calm. As swells or waves move in from the open ocean towards the Abrolhos, they are suddenly confronted by a rapidly rising seabed, causing them to break. An important factor in safe reef navigation is the skipper's ability to understand and interpret the conditions sensibly and objectively. When going out, if a big wave does rear up, get the boat's bow up fast and hit the wave at an angle of about 10 degrees off head on, with plenty of throttle. Back off the throttle when through and work out your approach to the next wave. Look for the lowest point of the wave and remember the correct angle of approach. When coming in through heavy seas, always concentrate on keeping your boat on the back of the wave, avoid surfing at all costs, and never get side on in the impact zone. Be careful when applying power in frothy waves as cavitation and loss of power may occur. If so, back off throttle until cavitation stops and reapply power gradually. Keep a close eye on the weather and watch out for unexpected changes, as the wind can change direction and blow strongly with little warning. The islands are low lying and offer little protection from the wind. The coral sand at the Houtman Abrolhos is generally very poor holding ground and dragging anchor here can be dangerous, especially at night. Geraldton Sea Rescue operate a 24 hour service and weather schedules are broadcast on VHF channel 73. The weather pattern is unaffected by the land and sea breezes of the mainland. During summer, south-easterlies prevail, and are constantly strong. During winter months, NW-W changes are preceded by northerlies and light winds. The Abrolhos is first in the path of any weather moving in from the west or northwest, and cold and warm fronts may reach the islands 24 hours or more in advance of weather bureau forecasts for the mainland. Proposed C Produced by Cartographic Services, DoT, Western Australia. CROWN COPYRIGHT RESERVED Department of Transport, W.A. 2010. December 2010, Edition 2. THE HOUTMAN ABROLHOS The Houtman Abrolhos and it's surrounding coral reef communities form one of Western Australia's most unique marine areas. The islands' environments - both marine and terrestrial - are very fragile, and need the protection of residents and visitors alike. The Abrolhos is part of the aquatic heritage of all West Australians - it is our task to ensure that we hand the islands, their fish stocks and their wildlife onto future generations, undamaged and still productive. No facilities or accommodation for visitors are available at the Abrolhos, and there are no sources of freshwater on the islands. Before setting out make sure that you have enough supplies and freshwater to last the length of your intended visit. Emergency medical assistance is available from the Silver Chain nurse on Rat Island (Easter Group) between 15 March and 30 June. Contact channel 16 on VHF. The Houtman Abrolhos Nature Reserve covers all 122 islands in the Abrolhos system. As such, by law, all wildlife is protected, and no domestic pets are allowed on vessels or at the islands. Landing is permitted on uninhabited islands, but lighting fires, camping and firearms are prohibited. Please take great care not to disturb nesting seabirds. If you do go ashore, it is better to walk along the shoreline, or well defined paths, rather than across the islands, as you may destroy seabird nesting burrows. CODE OF CONDUCT When you visit the Abrolhos, remember - this is a special place that needs your protection. Private property - The residences, jetties and rainwater tanks of commercial fishermen on the 22 islands designated for their use are private property. You may land on the islands, but you may not use the facilities (including jetties) unless you have written permission on board your boat from the owner. You may not stay in fishermen's camps unless the owner is present. If you are unable to use a public mooring, please endeavour to anchor away from sensitive marine habitats, particularly coral and seagrass areas. Take your rubbish away with you - don't drop it in the water. Only take enough fish for your personal consumption. Take care not to disturb birds and other wildlife on the islands. Don't pump bilges in the shallows - the effluent can harm marine life. When diving, avoid standing on fragile corals - they break easily. MOORINGS SHIPWRECKS The Abrolhos is famous for it's historic shipwrecks, the best known of which are the Dutch East India Company vessels Batavia (1629), on Morning Reef near Beacon Island in the Wallabi Group, and the Zeewijk (1727) on Half Moon Reef in the Pelsaert Group. So far, a total of seven historic shipwrecks have been discovered. Other wrecks are known to exist, but they are yet to be found. All wrecks, 75 years old or more, are protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976, which prohibits the removal of artefacts or wilful damage of any sort. By this means, the sites will remain better preserved for divers in the future. Refer to WA Maritime Museum for further information. REEF OBSERVATION AREAS A major development in managing the marine system of the Abrolhos occurred in 1994 with the introduction of Reef Observation Areas, with one such area being declared in each island group, including North Island. Except for the use of rock lobster pots, fishing by both recreational and commercial fishers is prohibited in the Reef Observation Areas. These regulations are intended to allow the recovery of finfish populations towards their original state, providing an area where divers can observe large fish that are not frightened by their approach. A number of environmentally-friendly public moorings have been installed at sensitive marine sites and popular diving spots around the Houtman Abrolhos. Refer to the reverse side of this chart for locations of the Easter Group mooring buoys. Instructions printed on the individual mooring buoys indicates suitability for day or overnight useage. BOATING SAFETY

Your boat must be suitable for a long journey in open water. Itmust be seaworthy and have adequate buoyancy. You must carry the appropriate safety equipment and ensure allon board know how to use it.

The Houtman Abrolhos is situated about 40 nautical miles west ofGeraldton and comprises 122 islands clustered into three maingroups. It is an extensive coral reef system that stretches forabout 45 nautical miles north to south. The islands are low lyingand do not present a very good radar picture.

The name Abrolhos is derived from the Portuguese language, andmeans "OPEN YOUR EYES", which is exactly what you need todo when navigating in this area.

The Abrolhos is a hazardous area and requires careful pilotage. The reef systems are steep, rising from relatively deep water, andcan remain unseen until close by. Good visibility is necessary tonavigate through the reefs. Visibility is impared when the sun islow or ahead and when the water is glassy calm.

As swells or waves move in from the open ocean towards theAbrolhos, they are suddenly confronted by a rapidly rising seabed, causing them to break. An important factor in safe reef navigationis the skipper's ability to understand and interpret the conditionssensibly and objectively.

When going out, if a big wave does rear up, get the boat's bow upfast and hit the wave at an angle of about 10 degrees off head on,with plenty of throttle. Back off the throttle when through and workout your approach to the next wave. Look for the lowest point ofthe wave and remember the correct angle of approach.

When coming in through heavy seas, always concentrate onkeeping your boat on the back of the wave, avoid surfing at allcosts, and never get side on in the impact zone.

Be careful when applying power in frothy waves as cavitation andloss of power may occur. If so, back off throttle until cavitationstops and reapply power gradually.

Keep a close eye on the weather and watch out for unexpectedchanges, as the wind can change direction and blow strongly withlittle warning. The islands are low lying and offer little protectionfrom the wind. The coral sand at the Houtman Abrolhos isgenerally very poor holding ground and dragging anchor here canbe dangerous, especially at night. Geraldton Sea Rescue operatea 24 hour service and weather schedules are broadcast on VHFchannel 73.

The weather pattern is unaffected by the land and sea breezes ofthe mainland. During summer, south-easterlies prevail, and areconstantly strong. During winter months, NW-W changes arepreceded by northerlies and light winds.

The Abrolhos is first in the path of any weather moving in from thewest or northwest, and cold and warm fronts may reach theislands 24 hours or more in advance of weather bureau forecastsfor the mainland.

THE HOUTMAN ABROLHOSThe Houtman Abrolhos and it's surrounding coral reefcommunities form one of Western Australia's most unique marineareas. The islands' environments - both marine and terrestrial -are very fragile, and need the protection of residents and visitorsalike.

The Abrolhos is part of the aquatic heritage of all West Australians- it is our task to ensure that we hand the islands, their fish stocksand their wildlife onto future generations, undamaged and stillproductive.

No facilities or accommodation for visitors are available at theAbrolhos, and there are no sources of freshwater on the islands. Before setting out make sure that you have enough supplies andfreshwater to last the length of your intended visit. Emergencymedical assistance is available from the Silver Chain nurse on RatIsland (Easter Group) between 15 March and 30 June. Contactchannel 16 on VHF.

The Houtman Abrolhos Nature Reserve covers all 122 islands inthe Abrolhos system. As such, by law, all wildlife is protected, and no domestic pets are allowed on vessels or at the islands.Landing is permitted on uninhabited islands, but lighting fires, camping and firearms are prohibited. Please take great care notto disturb nesting seabirds. If you do go ashore, it is better towalk along the shoreline, or well defined paths, rather than acrossthe islands, as you may destroy seabird nesting burrows.

CODE OF CONDUCTWhen you visit the Abrolhos, remember - this is a special placethat needs your protection.

Private property - The residences, jetties and rainwater●

tanks of commercial fishermen on the 22 islands designatedfor their use are private property. You may land on theislands, but you may not use the facilities (including jetties)unless you have written permission on board your boat fromthe owner. You may not stay in fishermen's camps unless theowner is present. If you are unable to use a public mooring, please endeavour●

to anchor away from sensitive marine habitats, particularlycoral and seagrass areas.Take your rubbish away with you - don't drop it in the water.●

Only take enough fish for your personal consumption.●

Take care not to disturb birds and other wildlife on the●

islands.Don't pump bilges in the shallows - the effluent can harm●

marine life. When diving, avoid standing on fragile corals - they break●

easily.

MOORINGS

SHIPWRECKSThe Abrolhos is famous for it's historic shipwrecks, the bestknown of which are the Dutch East India Company vesselsBatavia (1629), on Morning Reef near Beacon Island in theWallabi Group, and the Zeewijk (1727) on Half Moon Reef in thePelsaert Group. So far, a total of seven historic shipwrecks havebeen discovered. Other wrecks are known to exist, but they areyet to be found.

All wrecks, 75 years old or more, are protected under the HistoricShipwrecks Act 1976, which prohibits the removal of artefacts orwilful damage of any sort. By this means, the sites will remainbetter preserved for divers in the future. Refer to WA MaritimeMuseum for further information.

REEF OBSERVATION AREASA major development in managing the marine system of theAbrolhos occurred in 1994 with the introduction of ReefObservation Areas, with one such area being declared in eachisland group, including North Island. Except for the use of rocklobster pots, fishing by both recreational and commercial fishers isprohibited in the Reef Observation Areas. These regulations areintended to allow the recovery of finfish populations towards theiroriginal state, providing an area where divers can observe largefish that are not frightened by their approach.

A number of environmentally-friendly public moorings have beeninstalled at sensitive marine sites and popular diving spots aroundthe Houtman Abrolhos. Refer to the reverse side of this chart forlocations of the Easter Group mooring buoys. Instructions printedon the individual mooring buoys indicates suitability for day orovernight useage.
