Welcome to the September Mint Issue! Since last writing to you the Mint has opened the second stage of its refurbishment - the First Floor Gallery. This area includes a new theatrette, where you can watch a presentation showing exclusive behind the scenes footage of the coin production process, a number of new gallery exhibits which display early, rare and historically significant coins from the National Coin Collection and new observation windows, which give visitors a unique view of the Mint’s manufacturing and coining process. Visitors to the Mint can see one of the world’s strongest robots, the Titan, doing some heavy lifting in the Circulating Coin hall, along with our new Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs’), which are also lending a hand. Along with other new interactive activities in the Gallery, visitors also have the opportunity to take a photo at the “old factory” exhibit.

In early July, the Mint shop hosted a four day event at which collectors could purchase their 2009 $1 Master Mintmark coin and have it counterstamped. Bruce Mansfield lined up early on day one and was the lucky first visitor to have his coin counterstamped (picture shown).

In an exciting finish to the busy four days of counterstamping, the Mint Shop held a ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ event, on the evening of July 6. The event was well attended and two fantastic opportunities were offered as lucky door prizes. The winner of the first lucky door prize, Despina Tramoundanis (picture shown), had the rare opportunity to enter the Museum

vault and transfer some of the Mint’s most treasured coins to their new permanent display in the public gallery. The winner of the second prize, Jenny Tyrell (picture shown), was given a behind the scenes tour of the Mint.

Continuing with our ‘moon’ themed month, the Mint officially launched the 2009 50c Uncirculated Coin – 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. The event, which was hosted by ex Honeysuckle Creek staff and Apollo 11 enthusiasts, saw over 300 guests in attendance and the new coin design was positively received. In 2009, the Mint also celebrates the 40 year anniversary of the dodecagonal 50c coin.

In closing, I would like to draw your attention to the new Polar Series Montage, which is featured in this edition. Some of you may remember that on January 17 2009 the Royal Society of Victoria hosted a flyover of the South Magnetic Pole to mark its discovery in 1909. Five hundred of the Mint’s 2009 $5 Silver Proof Antarctic Explorers coins were on this flight and now these coins feature as the centrepiece of the Polar Series Montage. As only a small amount of these montages are available, make sure you purchase one quickly to avoid disappointment.

2009 Master Mintmark $1 Al/Bronze Uncirculated CoinIn 2009 the Royal Australian Mint completes one of the most substantial upgrades to its facilities since the original construction in 1965.

To mark this occasion, the Mint has released a Master Mintmark on a standard uncirculated $1 coin. The mark featuring the letter ‘C’ with Kangaroo passing through it was chosen by the Mint’s CEO Janine Murphy from a selection of motifs produced by Mint design staff.

The Master Mintmark logo has been registered with IP Australia and will appear on a variety of Mint numismatic products in the future.

This coin will intrige the young collector and those wanting an important keepsake from the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing numismatic history.

The Flight into Australian Antarctic historyOn 17 January 2009, the Royal Society of Victoria undertook a historic flight over Antarctica to commemorate the centenary of the South Magnetic Pole discovery in 1909.

His Royal Highness Duke of Gloucester KG, GCVO, accompanied the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Krester AC (the Society’s patron), on the commemorative flight. Other special guests included Mr Graham Smith (acting CEO of the Royal Australian Mint), Hon. Alex Chernov AO (Chancellor of the University of Melbourne)and fifty-two Young Science Ambassadors representing secondary colleges from Australia, Canada, Finland, New Zealand and United Kingdom.

60th Anniversary of Australian CitizenshipIn 2009 this nation celebrates sixty years of the enactment of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948. Over four million people have taken part in the affirmation ceremony symbolising our unity as a country. BilbyThese desert-dwelling marsupials are closely related to bandicoots, with big ears, silky fur and well-developed claws ideal for burrowing. Bilbies are often found sheltering near spinifex which is a feature of the sculpted background on the coin design. Despite the hot climatic temperatures of their habitat, bilbies do not need to drink water, receiving all their moisture from their food which includes insects, seeds, spiders, fruit and other small animals.

Frilled-Neck Lizard This amazing little reptile is an Australian icon having appeared on the original 2c coin design. When trying to attract a mate or when frightened the frilled ruff around its head unfolds making the lizard appear much larger - a great theory of defence against its many predators but often quite comical in action.

Local NewsThe Royal Australian Mint (the mint) has completed its refurbishment works and the First Floor is now open. The Mint has been undergoing the most substantial upgrade to its facilities since its original construction in 1965. This refurbishment project has included the construction of a new Coin Shop, Museum and Gallery and observation windows into the factory floor and production areas.

We are proud of this achievement and encourage you and your family to visit our new and improved facilities.

New Coin ShopThe new Mint Coin Shop stocks all the latest coin releases as well as gifts and souvenirs. Our friendly staff are on hand to assist you in finding that special coin for any occasion including the very popular birthday Pennies and Tokens along with other numismatic products.

New Observation WindowsExperience a unique view of the manufacturing and coining process from our new observation windows. These floor-to-ceiling windows allow visitors to get a close up view into each area involved with manufacturing Australia’s coins. Visitors can see one of the world’s strongest robots, the Titan doing some heavy lifting in the Circulating Coin Hall, along with our new Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), which are also lending a hand.

Informative and enjoyable A great way for collectors both young and young at heart to learn about coin production is by viewing our new theatrette presentation which plays an exclusive behind the scenes DVD of how the Royal Australian Mint makes it coins. From coin sculpting to coin production, this presentation is educational and a must see.

There are also a number of new interactive displays positioned throughout the Gallery illustrating the history of coins. And die hard collectors will be impressed by the opportunity of viewing some of the rarest and historically significant coins on show from our National Coin Collection. Amongst the interactive displays is the opportunity to take your photograph at the “old factory” exhibit.

Make your own money Of course you can still make your very own $1 coin on one of the new visitor coining presses. Each $1 coin has a special ‘C’ mintmark indicating that it has been made right here in Canberra.
