by the 14th October 2005Earlier than this would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello fellow Subaru fanatics,

The committee is looking into formalising a training programme to assist our newermembers in learning more about the capabilities of their vehicles and in learningthe basic driver skills required when four wheel driving, including recoverytechniques. I envisage this to be a significant assignment, and if any members arewilling to lend a hand then please inform John McKenna or myself.

Our goal of having 100 members by the end of June next year is on target, with 64members on the books to date, an increase of 5 over the same time last year. Thoseof you who have not yet re-joined will be receiving a separate reminder notice inwith this month’s magazine. I’m aware that some of you may not be intending to re-join the club, but your reasons may not be immediately obvious to the committee.Hence, in about a month’s time, those of you who have not re-joined by then will besent a questionnaire which will hopefully provide the committee with something towork on in ensuring that the members remain happy and loyal.

Don’t forget the sausage sizzle and the club auction immediately before the generalmeeting on Monday 26. Bring any excess Subaru parts, camping gear and yourmoney and make a bid on some real bargains.

See you in the dirt,Greg Bryant SC480

We have a few trips being run this month. The first one is a new one for theSuba club and hopefully won’t be the last. It is being run in conjunction withthe people from “The Backyard Boys Subaru” and will be a fun day out. Checkout “What’s on” for more details. Please note that with this being a BYB dayrun with the club we must abide by their strict “Subaru only” rule for thecruise. All members are welcome to bring their “other” makes to the finalmeeting place to join in the 4wd part of the trip. Contact myself for moredetails if you need them.

The second trip we have planned for this month is an afternoon at The WRXExperience. Again this is a new trip for the club. I have personally driven theWRX’s before and it is an absolute ball. For any one that has ever dreamed ofdriving a race/rally prepared WRX this is your chance. Spectators are morethan welcome to come along on the trip and watch the fun.

We have a few more distance trips planned for the future. All of which will beput in the magazine as the time gets closer. Some of which are Double Islandpoint (Xmas party), Miriam Vale/1770, Stockton’s beach along with a fewmore local forestry trips.

Don’t forget this next club meeting is the annual Club Auction and sausagesizzle. Bring along any old camping gear or Subaru parts you no longer needor want and donate them to the club to be auctioned. This is a social nightand can be a lot of fun.

With the weather forecast saying strong winds and coastal showers it wasnot the best conditions for a weekend for a beach trip. Still everything wasstill all go, I set off in the Brumby for the barge at Tewantin. At about thePine River bridge I got a call from Greg Bryant travelling in his Navara towingthe camping trailer with young Alex, Kathy’s sister Cherie and boy friendPaul on board, saying they were back a bit at Nudgee. Then at aroundCaboolture [Greg] Curlie rang to say, he had already arrived at the barge, that was about 7.45 am, he was a bit early.

I stopped for a quick top up of fuel at Tewantin, before arriving at the bargejust before 9 am, Greg was not far behind. Curlie was there in his lifted L 89wagon, as was Joan O’Shea and Kelly from the Sunshine Coast in her 02Forester X, and Will and Lisa Spelter and their son Daniel and young baby intheir L88 wagon with 14’’ wheels. We also had to meet new Hervey Baymember Darren Woods in his well setup lifted Brumby in Rainbow

Inskip PInskip PInskip PInskip PInskip Point trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...Beach. Curlie had all the good ideas and latest beach condition info, hesuggested we should pay our camping fees at the National Parks officenearby, which we all did, except for Will, who was only day tripping. Therocks at Rainbow were impassable, even at low tide, so the Freshwater trackwas our planned route. We let our tyres down and lined up for the barge.

We made it on to the beach without a problem, the forecast was right, thewind was strong. The first part of the beach was narrow and soft but as wetravelled north it became better. We made a quick stop at the coloured sandcliffs, then continued on to the Freshwater access track. I made it throughok but it was a bit soft in places. Joan was next in the Forester, but withoutenough speed ran out of puff just before the last bit,So I backed

8

Inskip PInskip PInskip PInskip PInskip Point trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...oint trip cont...back to help, but in the process took it too easily and bellied out on the highcentre. As I was digging myself out, a kind Hilux driver recovered Joan, andthen did the same for me. Now the track was clear again, Curlie and Will hadmore pace and made it through, but Greg towing the trailer bogged down, aPajero rescued him. We all stopped for a short break at the day use areabefore setting off again on the freshwater track which was in good condition. We soon came upon an on coming NSW registered Impreza. We all wonderedwhat his plan was because he did not have the clearance to get all the wayto the beach.

Arriving in Rainbow Beach Darren soon found us, he went and paid hiscamping fee, and then we all set off via the bitumen to Inskip Point to find agood camping spot out of the wind, which we soon found. We had a mixtureof camps from Greg’s camper, Joan, Kelly and Darren camping in their carsto Curlie and myself in tents. Darren’s Brumby had one of the classic tonneaucovers that followed the roof line with a perspex rear window, it gives you alot more head room for sleeping. After having lunch we took it easy, waitingfor the tide to go out so we could go for a drive down to the point. By the timewe hit the beach the tide was still going out and it was pretty soft. Parkingat the point where the barges load for Fraser Island, Greg realised he wasnot in 4WD,oops, you can get away with that in rear wheel drives for a while.Just metres off the point there were a group of Dolphins bobbing up anddown. On the way back to camp we

drove through some of the camp area tracks, there are some great spots tobe found.

By now it was late afternoon so Will set off for the drive home via the bitumen, while the rest of us settled in for the night. Greg was cooking stir-fry and hadtoo much, so he kindly invited me to join them. The deal was, I would do thewashing up and Paul helped do the drying, a good deal I thought, it wasdelicous. During the night there was some light rain, enough to wet things.Sunday dawned cool and overcast. The plan was we would first set off forDouble Island Point while the tide was low, we all packed up except forGreg, who left his camper set up. Our plan did not work as the rocks atRainbow were impassable and to our surprise there was an abandoned earlymodel Landcruiser Ute that had been caught there. The story we were toldwas that the driver, on Saturday night, had clutch problems and the electricsgot wet. It just shows you what can happen.

From here we split in two groups, Greg decided his crew would head back tocamp and leisurely pack up and take the inland dirt track the Cooloola Wayhome. On the way they took the Harry’s Hut turn off for a quick look. The restof us decided to take another inland track to Kings Bore, and if the tide wasstill right, back on to the beach down to the barge. I over shot the first turnoff, but once we were on the right track with the light rain, it was goodgoing. We all had to keep an eye out as there was a group of trail bikes, whowere using the tracks, weaved their way passed us. At the top of the KingsBore track, before the steep decent to the beach we all stopped and checkedto make sure the tide was still out enough as it was now incoming to continuesouth. There was plenty of beach left so we set off, it was good going until, the last soft bit before the bottom barge exit. We all made it off the beachwithout a problem and stopped at a parking area with a bit of protectionfrom the wind for lunch. From here we pumped our tyres back up, caught thebarge and headed our separate ways home. Even though the weather wasnot the best it still turned to be a great weekend

Part one.As most of you know. I have been building and sailing radio controlled model boats for anumber of years. Bruce Ottway gave me run down model boat he had and said all it needs isa new battery and radio gear. What it really needed was a total rebuild. The hull was the onlypart worth salvaging, it had been fibreglassed, there was some wood rot in the frames and ithad been rebuilt at leased twice before, judging by the different paint colours I found. Thesuper structure was basically non existent.

The hull was plank on frame construction with the bow planks laid diagonal to the run of thehull which is of a chine design with a fair amount of flair on the bow. The outside has beencovered in fiberglass at some time, either at construction or some time later. The hull hasbeen dropped as there is a large patch on the rear bottom of the hull.

The model is of a WW II British patrol boat made by Thorneycraft or Vosper. British patrolboats carried a variety of armament depending on their role, usually a large gun on the bowand some times another mounted on the stern and between 4 to 6 smaller gun turrets alongthe side of the boat. Depth charges were also dropped from either side at the stern. The mainbridge was out in the open as these vessels were mainly used in the English Channel and forshort range trips.

First job was to remove the rotten timber and the superstructure, then the inside of the hullwas sanded to remove old motor mounts, brackets etc. A stand was then made to hold themodel stable for rebuilding and display purposes. A new motor and mounts were installedand a tray to mount the radio and servos and speed controller was made and fitted to theinside of the hull. There was no rudder in the hull when I was given it, so I drill a hole behindthe prop and fitted a new rudder. The old motor was water cooled and I patched the holes leftin the hull after removing the piping.

Next month in part two, painting and fitting out the interior and sanding and painting of theoutside of the hull.

An unusual HybredAn unusual HybredAn unusual HybredAn unusual HybredAn unusual Hybred – It has been a long term project for a few years now forSunshine Coast member Greg Sinn. The finished project is a ute, fitted withan L series body cut down to an extra cab, bolted on to a Toyota 4 Runnerdiesel chassis. All that needs to be completed now is to fit the doors to therear tray. Greg has done such a thorough job that it looks factory fitted. It issurprising how well everything fits on to the chassis, also the inline 4 cylinderfits well into the flat 4 engine bay. A front mounted bull bar incorporating awinch and a 140 litre fuel tank completes the project. Now for the names, maybe Hybaru, or Toyobaru, or something similar.
