It seems that no matter what area of projects you get into, if you choose to "do the fair," it takes a lot of time and energy. A big thanks goes out to all the adults who worked so hard to keep the kids on task at the fair and to all the kids who participated. The project work such as sewing, crafts, electricity, and communications was down this year. Maybe that was because we have a large number of kids signed up for animal projects. Any animal project is a huge commitment for leaders, parents, and kids. We have had lots of calls from kids who are interested in 4-H. Some of our leaders are overcommitted right now. I have had a couple of parents mention they are interested in starting a sewing or cooking club and I hope they don't get overwhelmed with life and forget. When our new 4-H agent, Marla K. Lowder comes on September 20th, I hope she will inspire us a little more in that direction. There are ways to fit some of the other projects into the animal projects too. In Anchorage, one of the horse clubs worked on sewing show vests and shirts during the winter and wore them in their own shows, then entered them in the Fashion Show. I know many different projects have been done here in Fair- banks connected with animals but expanding into the cooking and sewing area. Making treats for your animal is one such expansion. For those that don't have animals, there are lots of things to do. We have file drawers full of curriculum that could be used. As we wind down the 4-H year and look forward to the next, hopefully we will all look a little farther than the things we have done and see if we can expand our horizons. Teens - keep your ears open. We are in the process of planning a "Teen Summit." We hope to involve teens from every project and get them excited about all the cool things that teens can do. Before we get to looking too far into the next year, let's put this year to rest. The next big push is to get your record books up to date from the fair and hand them into your leaders. Record Books should be handed into leaders by September 10th. The leaders should then look over the record books and bring the best ones into the office to be judged by September 15. A list of every kid who completed a record book should come into the office by September 15th also. We need that information so we can order the year pins that are given out at Achievement Night. This year, Achievement Night is going to be September 25th at Pioneer Park. I hope everyone will come and help celebrate each other's achievements for the year. If any of you have pictures from a 4-H related event or something you would like to share, please contact me as soon as possible to get on the pro- gram. It would be great if each of the clubs had a story board to put up as a display, so we could all see the work each of you are doing. This would be as simple as getting a science project display board and mounting pictures with captions on display on a table at Pioneer Park. And remember it is a potluck! Tanana District 4-H News September 2004

Horse InformationThe 4-H Horse Council has made arrangements with the Fair for 4-H horse clubs

to ride in the new metal arena at the fairgrounds September 1, 8, & 15September 1, 8, & 15September 1, 8, & 15September 1, 8, & 15September 1, 8, & 15, 12-9 p.m. The HorseCouncil would like to remind its membership that riding at the fairgrounds requires thepresence of an adult leader from your club to monitor all riding activities. This is not intendedto be an unsupervised, drop-off riding time. Failure to observe this rule will result in loss ofriding privileges. Jeanette Van Bueren has offered to serve as coordinator for scheduling ridetimes. She can be reached at 479-5502.

(Last day of 4-H Riding September 15th) Note: You'll also find these dates listed in the calendar on page 2. Please watch monthlyfor any changes.

We would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to all the volunteers whohelped at our 4-H Bill Burke Horsemanship Clinic and our third annual4-H Schooling Horse Show, which was held at the Tanana Valley FairgroundsJune 17-20. Volunteers make things happen and we could not have done itwithout you! We were delighted to see so many willing parents, familymembers, friends, and leaders who cheerfully stepped forward to helpscribe, man the gates, host our judge for lunch, and assist in carrying out allthe other details that go in to making a clinic and show happen. I think thekids had a good time and learned a lot to boot. We also want to recognize a number of organizations from the Fairbankscommunity who supported 4-H that weekend. First, the UAF FireDepartment graciously came over several times to water down the arena, which in the hot and dry weather had become a dust bowl. You guys arewonderful! We also want to thank the businesses All The Pretty LittlePonies and the Alaska Feed Company, who donated gift certificates asincentives for our rock-picking contest. (In one hour a handful of 4-H'erspicked close to 900 lbs of rocks out of the New Carol Phillips arena!) Specialthanks also goes to Leigh Carlson and the Interior Horse Council, whoprovided those hungry rock-pickers with grilled hot dogs and lemonade. Thefood and drink made all the difference in the world on a hot evening! We especially would like to thank Bill Burke who traveled from Oregon tospend a hot, dusty week in Fairbanks helping our kids improve theirhorsemanship skills. We appreciate so much, the time he spent with us andthe patience and good will he shared with us. Finally, a word of praise goes to all of the 4-H members who participatedin the clinic and show. You all worked hard and did a great job. It waswonderful to see so many of you helping and cheering for each other. We are proud of all that you accomplished.

you for your hard work and for contributing to 4-H. So, to everyone that participated in 4-H Clubwork, 4-HDog, 4-H Horse, and 4-H Livestock.... THANK YOU!

I have to say that I was amazed to see all of the hard work being done, not just by the 4-H members, but by the leaders and parents as well. You all make 4-H in the Tanana District what it is - GREAT!

It was an honor to work for all of you as Superintendent for 4-H Clubwork and quite a joy to see allof the great workmanship turned in, knowing that you all worked very hard on your entries.

I look forward to seeing you all next year, so keep up the good work!Debbie

Are you a 4-H'er who likes to travel and meet new people? Read on! Last fall I had the opportunity toattend the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. I wasn't sure what to expect since I was the onlyAlaskan delegate, but when I walked into the five star--Hyatt Hotel I knew Congress was going to be a firstclass and memorable experience.

We had speakers who juggled knives while riding a six-foot unicycle, wrote the Chicken Soup books, heldthe Ms. America 2004 title, and penned the Jessica Lynch biography. They made us laugh and cry. At theInternational Dinner, the entire Hyatt Ballroom was filled with people in costume and displays featuringcuisine from countries around the world including the Netherlands, Russia, China, Greece, Japan, and theUnited States. One night we had an "Evening of Culture" at the Atlanta History Center where I tried a bit ofAfrican dancing and laughed at an Italian comedian.

Everyone brought along dimes for Habitat for Humanity and during a game show, we dropped them intowheel barrows and raised over $10,000! All of this money went toward the Clover House that 4-H is buildingfor Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta. We also had the opportunity to participate in one of numerouscommunity service projects including cleaning up a local park, or spending time with senior citizens in aretirement home.

Throughout the Congress, I met people from all over the United States as well as Puerto Rico. TheWisconsin delegation (with the largest number of delegates) happily adopted me (the smallest delegation). We attended workshops designed to help us develop leadership skills to take back to our clubs and schoolsacross the country. My favorite events were our two dances where I learned a bit of country dance - It is 4-Hafter all.

How was I able to attend? First, I am a member of 4-H. Second, I talked with the 4-H Office and filled outan application. Third, I applied for and was granted scholarship money from the Tanana District 4-H LeadersCouncil to help with my Congress expenses. I would greatly encourage other 4-H'ers to attend. It was anawesome trip!

4-H Congress Article by Amy VanderZwaag Thank You Amy for sharingyour experience!
