Dear Life-Changer,

It’s always a blessing to see people move from despair, depression and hopelessness to success and happiness. Thank you for your support and partnership in helping us reach out to those in our communities who are hurting. Even though the economy is still so uncertain, we continue to move forward with our vision: “No One is Homeless”.

Even now we are preparing for the fall. We expect to feed over 200,000 meals by the end of the year. Hope often begins with a meal and there are many more people in need of hope and healing. Help us with our annual “Pack the Pantry” campaign (see below). This is a great project for your place of worship, business, school, club or organization. It is

so rewarding to see what young people are doing; school kids, college students, and young adults are becoming more involved in helping the homeless at our Centers in Miami, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach. We are also fast approaching our “No One is Homeless” special campaign starting in mid November and continuing until mid December. In fact we are having a humungous Radiothon with the theme “No One is Hungry” as part of our larger campaign. Please check our websites for more details. We want to increase the awareness of homelessness and also to raise funds for our programs. We simply could not do what we do without YOU! Together, we are serving more than 1,000 men, women, and children each day. Hundreds are enrolled in our residential programs. In fact, last year nearly 700 men and women graduate our programs, found employment, and housing. Blessings, Rev. Ronald Brummitt

Dream of 30 Years Finally Fulfilled

The Heal thy Corner

Horace came from a large family where he and his siblings

encountered physical abuse from their father. He was a great student and well liked in school until he was introduced to drugs. As drug use became more frequent, his grades went down and conduct became a problem until he was eventually kicked out of school and went to jail shortly thereafter.

Horace went to his sister for help and after a stay at a local hospital, his sister contacted the Miami Rescue Mission where he was sent to get his life under control. Although he was hesitant at first, Horace quickly warmed to the idea after seeing people with similar problems transform their lives the way he hoped.

During his stay at the Miami Rescue Mission, Horace has been able to further his education, a goal that he has kept for over thirty years. Horace’s dream was to become a lawyer; through the Education Center on the Miami Campus, Horace is currently studying to be a paralegal where he received straight A’s last semester in college.

“Being here has allowed me to pursue my dream of 30 years. Thank you to all the supporters for making my new life a reality.”

While in jail, Horace earned his GED and had hopes to go to college but fell deeper and deeper into drugs over the next thirty years, going in and out of jail five separate times. After his last time in jail, Horace found himself homeless for over three years and addicted to drugs during that time.

“Finally one day something just started nagging on me. I guess it was the realization that if I continue on this path, I will die in the streets, alone, with no one around. That was a frightening feeling to me.”

Since the Grand Opening of the Miami Rescue Mission’s Health Clinic in May of 2009, the Miami Rescue Mission/

Broward Outreach Centers has been able to provide medical services through your support to the homeless and underserved of South Florida. These life-saving practices have been expanded with the opening of the Miami Health Clinic’s satellite location at the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach. In just the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the Miami Health Clinic provided over 92,000 units of medical service!

In addition to the everyday medical practices in Miami and Pompano Beach, the Miami Rescue Mission/Broward Outreach Centers also team up with other great organizations like Borniquen Health, Miami-Dade Medical Center Campus, Ross University and Brown-Mackie College hold such events as the Free Health Fair. At the Health Fair, the needy were able to take advantage of free health screenings and education such as blood pressure checks, HIV screenings and general check-ups because of your support.

“It was the realization that if I continue on this path, I will die

on the streets, alone...”

Broward OutreachChanging Lives in Broward

Our Centers in Hollywood and Pompano Beach offer comprehensive services to the

homeless and needy of Broward County.

The Broward Outreach Center Hollywood (below, left) began in the early 1990’s in a store front to help feed and clothe the homeless. However due to amazing support over the next several years, the first comprehensive homeless center in Broward County was opened in 1997 at 2056 Scott Street.

Due to the success of the Hollywood Center, Broward County selected the Miami Rescue Mission/Broward Outreach Centers to operate the North Homeless Assistance Center in Pompano Beach. The Broward Outreach Center Pompano (bottom, right) opened its doors in 2002 and within one week the Center was completely filled.

From the time both Centers opened, the need of the community has been great, resulting in

both Centers expanding to their current state where they average 150 residents in Hollywood and 200 residents in Pompano Beach at any one time, respectively.

The services offered at the Broward Outreach Centers include: individual case management, education classes, computer literacy, life skills, mental health services, referrals, medical assistance, budget training, spiritual opportunities, job readiness and job placement. Clothing, meals and transportation are also provided to those enrolled in the programs.

With the fall and winter months quickly approaching, we will see an increase of men, women and children homeless during the holidays and hurting during these uncertain economic times. It is only with our amazing supporters that we are able to reach out to those who need it the most. Thank You for making a difference and transforming lives!

Regaining Family and Future

Since entering, Lisa has been able to mend the broken relationships with her children and family, obtain the help she needed from her time being abused and is now working full time in hospitality.

The best part of her journey is that Lisa was able to spend Christmas with her daughter, for the first time in 10 years.

“Just a year ago, I would have thought I’d be homeless, stealing for drugs or probably dead by now. Because of your support, my family is becoming united again and I have a great career.”

Lisa came to the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood after a string of failed relationships turned violent and

introduced her to illegal drugs.

Shortly after graduating high school, Lisa’s boyfriend introduced her to something she had never heard of before, Oxycontin, a highly addictive prescription pain medicine. After this introduction, Lisa’s life began to spin out of control quicker than she could have imagined.

Lisa ended up having three children with her second relationship and ultimately they parted ways where she was able to stay clean and sober for over two years… little did she know that her third relationship would lead to her biggest problem yet.

“It seems to be a pattern with men. I became involved with a man who was already an addict which led to it becoming something to where it consumed my life. He introduced me to the new drug of choice, crack cocaine.”

Lisa continued to support her addiction by stealing, which lead to going to prison for petty theft. After prison, Lisa was hopeless, depressed and homeless. Then one night the unthinkable happened, Lisa was almost beaten to death by her boyfriend at the time while he was in a drug induced state. She knew something had to change; the next day she came to the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood.

There are so many ways to get involved at the Broward Outreach Centers. Each and everyday wonderful groups and individuals are helping reach out to those in our community who need it the most! One group that helped in almost every way possible was Pine Ridge Education Center... Not only did they raise money for the Center (presentation left), but they also donated much needed hygiene products and sponsored a wonderful lunch for the formerly homeless men,

women and children residing at the Broward Outreach Center... they even served the meal themselves! This is only one of so many stories of our supporters helping to change lives. Thank you so much for all you have done and all you continue to do to help the homeless and needy!

Throughout the year, the Miami Rescue Mission reaches out to those in our community who need it the most. Since 1922,

homeless and needy men, women and children have seen their lives transformed thanks to our amazing volunteers, donors and supporters. Our Center for Men (right) provides emergency services such as nutritious meals, showers and a safe place to sleep. Within our Center for Men, we have our Regeneration Program which offers life-changing opportunities for men who suffer from life controlling problems of homelessness, addicition, inadequate job skills, mental issues or illeteracy. There are over 240 men residing in the building each day and another 300 men and women are provided services in Miami. The Community Activity Center (bottom, center) is designed to meet the needs of Miami-Dade’s ‘at-risk’ youth. Currently, the building hosts afterschool children from over ten local public schools and also serves as host to a charter school during the day. Afterschool programs offer everything from arts and crafts to reading time and homework assistance.

The Jeffrey A. Tew Education Center (bottom, left) offer state-of-the-art education and computer technology training for those seeking to improve academic skills and re-enter the job market. An average of 135 students are enrolled at any one time with job readiness and placement as part of the class schedules.

Our Center for Women & Children (bottom, right) is a safe haven for homeless women and families that provides overnight shelter as well as a long-term recovery program. Nearly 50 bed are available for those women eager to transform their lives and better themselves.

We invite you to come to see the lives that are being transformed on our Miami Campus. Please call Melissa Singh at 305.572.2002 for a tour or for more information.
