Haiti Secondary School Fund Drive Throughout April, SJB parishioners are invited to financially support the students at the only Catholic secondary school (grades 7 - 13) in our Sister Parish, St. Pierre, in Baradères, Haiti. The Sister Parish Project of St. John the Baptist helped St. Pierre establish a secondary school. In 1999, the secondary school (high school in the US)—the Collège de St. Jean Baptiste (CSJB)—opened in temporary quarters with a seventh-grade class. Eighth grade was added in 2000. In fall of 2001, the new school building opened with about 100 seventh, eighth and ninth graders enrolled. Since then, grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 were added. Current enrollment is about 330 students and 23 teachers. Costs are estimated at an annual rate of $225 per student. Donations cover salaries for teachers, school personnel, and daily hot lunch for students and teachers. Most importantly, donors provide students an opportunity almost none of these young people would otherwise have: a quality secondary education and a daily meal.

Each Fall, the pastor, Fr. Jean-Philippe, submits a budget for the school year:

Budget FY’18

Requested Approved

Secondary School: 23 Teachers $ 41,000 ($180 each per month) $25,000 ($110 each per month)

Lunch program: 330 students & 23 teachers, $ 29,000 ($8.79 each per month) $15,000 ($4.55 per student)

Total $ 70,000 $40,000

Based on your contributions, we allocate funds for teacher salaries, lunches for students and teachers, and other items if funding permits. Last year we were very successful in raising over $150,000 in relief funds after Hurricane Matthew. These funds were used immediately, and a detailed accounting of each expense was submitted to us by Fr. Jean-Philippe. People are extremely generous when disasters hit but the rebuilding process can be lengthy and expensive. Your ongoing participation in this ministry is critical. While our greatest need is funding, we also need help with resources. Do you have a contact may be able to help St. Pierre with supplies, skilled labor, job or higher educational referrals or support, and last, but not least, prayers and communication with our brothers and sisters in Baradères? Envelopes for contributions will be in the pews throughout April. Any amount is most appreciated. You may put donation into the basket or leave them at the Parish Office. Your dollars go far at College St. Jean Baptiste!

Haiti Presentation

Self-made Man! Join us April 7 and 8 at all Masses when we welcome Pierre Richard Pierre, a member of the first graduation class at CSJB in 2006. On Sunday, April 8, after the 12 noon Mass in the Gym, Richard will share his journey from Baradères, Haiti to New York, New York.

24th Annual Archdiocesan Vocations Mass

Mass will include a homily by an archdioceasan priest and a talk by a religious sister. After Mass, students will be given the opportunity to visit and speak with seminarians, priests, and consecrated religious women and men. Information will be sent to all our Catholic grade schools about registration for this event.

SJB School News Art class at SJB is filled with so many fun assignments. In art class, second graders traveled to the past to explore how people in earlier times used art as a way to record stories and communicate ideas. They learned about the four children and their dog who discovered the Cave of

Lascaux in France back in 1940. They took a virtual tour through the cave, observing all the different animals drawn on the wall. To get the experience of what it was like to create these cave paintings, the students crawled under the tables to create their own cave art in the dark. They learned how difficult it must have been to draw in the dark and they were thankful that today’s art supplies are more sophisticated than what was used 20,000 years ago!

Father-Daughter Dance

The Father Daughter Dance was amazing! Thank you to all of the dads and daughters that came to the dance - we had over 80 girls dressed to impress! The SJB gym was transformed into a magical place with glowing lanterns, twinkle lights and lots of pink tulle, and the dance floor was always full of twirling girls. The homemade treats were scrumptious and chocolate flowed from a fountain.

There were many raffle prize winners thanks to the generosity of LZC jewelry from Lissa Cunningham, True Nail Spa gift certificates from Holly Nguyen, and special candies and teddy bears from the Smith family - Thank you all! Additional prizes went to our hoola hoop contest winners, youngest and oldest daughters in attendance, the closest birthday for an escort and his girl, and the 'Guess How Many Candies' jar- Congratulations to all the winners! Special thanks to the planning committee for all the work to make this happen, and also to all the bakers, set up and clean-up crew (please forgive me if I miss any names!): Kristine Ribas, Jessie Fitzgerald, Heather Ellong, Jeanette Barberena, Ann Harvey, Janine Smith, Kim and Kevin Trebel, Karen Ionata, Jeanine and Chris Regan, Hilary Lappin, Crystal Vinson, Juliet Gasman, Dianne Branch, Jamie Strong, Ginger Slaughter, Mimi Taddesse, Karind Brioso, Kira Ebanks, Merianne Spencer, Stephanie Mitjans, Anne Irwin, Holly Hickey, and Tom Klotz and his crew! Thank you, Good Vibrations for providing great music and a photo booth. Also, thank you Kevin Trebel for lending us his equipment and expertise for a portrait station. — From Kathleen Langton, Father-Daughter Dance Organizer

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

There is at least one major reality uniting everybody on this earth. Each and every single person, whether they want to or not, is going to die. Deep questions arise from the thought of death. Is this all there is? Is there life beyond death? What will happen to me? What will happen to my body? We can extend these questions to cosmic proportions. What happens to planet earth? What happens to the whole universe? Where is this all going? Is life just “a tale told by an idiot” that is meaningless and ephemeral? Or, is life the beginning of something far greater than we could ever imagine? Dare we hope for this unimaginable something? The reality of death, when we face it without denying it, can raise the question of hope. Each one of us can ask ourselves, “Do I hope that death is not the end and that there is life beyond death?” The solemn feast we celebrate today is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The women find an empty tomb three days after Jesus dies on a cross. An angel confronts them and proclaims, “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised.” The Risen Jesus is the promise of eternal life. He is the ground of our hope. Death is not the end, but, in fact, God is The End. The Risen Jesus is what we will be like in the final divine transformation of the whole universe. So, existence is not meaningless nor does death win out. God will take care of us.

The risen Christ is the summary of all our hopes. The early Christians described the crucified and risen Christ as ‘the beginning, the first born from the dead’ (Col.1:18; Rev.1:5) and ‘the first fruits of those who have died’ (1 Cor.15:20). They perceived that what God had done for Jesus held absolute meaning for the world. It represents the dawning of God’s final intention for all of creation, the Eschaton. The crucified and risen Christ signifies The End, in Greek “Eschaton,” of creation, which means the fulfillment and completion of creation. What happened to Christ is what God wants to happen for the rest of creation: radical transformation unto divine oneness.

We live between the first coming of Jesus and the second coming of Jesus, which is called the “Parousia.” The early Christians believed that God’s final

purpose for creation, the new creation, had been made manifest in Christ and is available now. The risen Christ is the eruption of divine oneness into present existence. But, the old ways are still here as well. New life is available while old life still goes on. In other words, injustice, death,

selfishness, violence, and illusion are still a part of our present existence. They constitute the old world and the old creation, which is separated from God. By raising Jesus from the dead, God has brought the new creation into the present world of selfishness, injustice, and death. We are already saved, but not yet fully saved. We are already one with God, but we have not yet fully integrated this deepest dimension of our

identity with the rest our lives. We live between times. God’s new world of divine unity and gratuitous love symbolized by the Risen Christ has erupted into this old world of sin and division. Hope lives in this tension. We have plentiful evidence of sin and evil, yet because we trust God in the Risen Jesus we can boldly hope that in the end divine mercy wins out. Death and evil do not have the final word in anyone’s life, even in the ultimate fate of the cosmos.

Christ is now the goal of creation. It is what we are all meant to be, that is, radically one with God and fully human. Since Christ is the goal of creation, dying-rising is the how of salvation. Dying-rising is what must happen to us if we are to become one with God. We all must radically let go of self and allow God to raise us into the new life of divine oneness. If we but consent, God will transform us into other Christs: persons fused to the mystery of God. Dying is the reversal and de-centering of the self. Resurrection is the breakthrough into the mystery of God caused by God.

In this Mystical Word Series, stretching from Easter Sunday to the Ascension, we will reflect on eschatology, that is, the theological study of the last things. Heaven, hell, purgatory, judgment, a new heaven and a new earth, the second coming of Jesus, and universal salvation will be our topics. Christian eschatology is “hope seeking understanding.” Because of the Risen Jesus we know death is not the end. God’s mercy is The End, the definitive and final reality in all our lives.

SJB CYO Softball SJB Softball registration is now open for SJB students and parishioners. SJB Athletics participates in CYO Girls Softball for 10U, 12U, and 14U. This season, SJB Athletics is partnering with Burtonsville Athletic Association (BAA) to field SJB baseball teams for Grades K-8. Learn more and register at www.sjbathletics.org.

Introducing SJB FUTSAL!

What is Futsal? 5 on 5 indoor ⚽ and it's happening this spring at SJB Gym. Boys and girls, Gr 3-8. Learn more and register at www.sjbathletics.org or contact Emerson Branch [email protected].

CYO Track and Field CYO offers Track and Field as a spring sport. SJB Athletics does not have a program, but interested SJB parishioners and students should consider competing for our neighboring parish, St. Andrew the Apostle, which has a strong track and field program and welcomes SJB Jaguars. Please contact the following for more

information: Hugh McKenna – [email protected] or David Luksic –[email protected] or visit standrewapostle.org/ministry/.

SJB CYO Baseball This season CYO has determined, based on parish feedback, that there will not be enough teams to form a league, so SJB will not offer CYO baseball this year. Our recommendation is that you sign-up your players with BAA’s recreational baseball league which is very comparable and close by. When registering, add SJB as the carpool and team preference and BAA will make every attempt to place SJB players together which is a fun experience for the players and a logistical convenience for coaches and parents. Contact BAA Baseball Director, Molly Surden at [email protected].

SJB Spring Intramurals Registration is now open for Pre-K thru 1st Grade. Tee-Ball (Friday evenings) and Little Feet Soccer (Saturday mornings). Starting in Early April. To learn more and register, please visit www.sjbathletics.org.
