The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FAMILY CORNER We are grieving over the unexpected death of a member of our family. Do not laugh – it was our son’s bunny! The feast day for St. Francis of Assisi is October 4, so this is a good time to explain why our relationships with pets are important. Those of us with pets know that they have a special place in our hearts. Although the debate continues about what happens to our pets after their life on earth ceases, we know that while they are a part of our lives we have a special relationship with them that brings out the best in us. Pets and people have unconditional love for one another, and pets can sometimes be better at this kind of love. Pets allow us to develop our caregiving skills, to express pure happiness when we engage in play, or to release pent up emotions when we are having a difficult time in life. When we are sick, our pets sense it and watch over us. When our pets get sick and die we feel it deeply because our unique relationship with one of God’s creatures enriches our life in immeasurable ways. We understand that a right relationship with God is important to our faith. Pets can help teach us what it means to be in a right relationship because they depend on our goodness as we depend on God’s goodness. We should always strive to do what is right in our relationships with animals, with other people, and with God.St. Francis of Assisi said it best: “If you have men that will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.” Rest in peace, Dewberry!

St. Francis understands how much joy you brought to our family. Jeremiah

Formed is back! The Formed feature for this month is Consecration:

On May 13, 1981, during the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima in St.

Peter’s Square, Pope Saint John Paul II miraculously survived three shots at point-

blank range by a professional assassin. On the one year anniversary of the

assassination attempt, he traveled to Fatima, Portugal to offer his gratitude to Mary

as he was certain "it was a mother's hand that guided the bullet's path" and saved his

life. He renewed his consecration to Mary and in his homily which taught the

importance of Marian consecration for all Catholics.

CD of the Month: "What's so great about being Catholic?" By Jason Evert. The Catholic Faith has so much depth and beauty, but many times it turns into something mechanical or just something we do on the side. Jason Evert is an engaging and dynamic speaker that re-flects on the lives of holy people in every age and how they can be a true testimony of what it means to be Catholic and why it's a life worth living. CD is available in the Augustine Kiosk located in the parish office.
