for the ministry. Others willingly sacrifice overtime pay and sometimes even advancements, in order to spend more tim e doing things for their church.
At first glance, the words o f Jesus appear to be a contradiction to the words of Job. Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth . . . but laj up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20). It seems strongly implied here that we can indeed “take it with us.” It’s all a m atter of where we invest.
This is true. But it’s also a m atter of how we invest and why. No doubt Jesus, in this instance, is actually talking about material things. As the common but clearly understood phrase puts it, this is where the “rubber hits the road” for most o f us in the matter of stewardship. Most of us find it somewhat easier to deal with tim e and talents than money.
The returning of a tithe o f all we earn and gain is a good starting point. Indeed, it is probably the place to begin. The consistent giving of G od’s tithe, beginning with a m inim um of one-tenth, will open the eyes of the tither to an understanding o f what Jesus was trying to teach His followers. This is the crux of the m atter will we have treasures in heaven or will we be satisified by building up our financial assets here on earth?
Basically, it does come down to this. We can take it with us. Perhaps it’s better said, we can send it on ahead of us. A true Christian concept of the stewardship of money entrusts it to God for His use and the expansion of His kingdom. Thus we are free from excessive encumbrances so that we might more My devote tim e and talent to Him as well. If each Naza- rene were to become this kind o f Christian steward there is no doubt that the church would surge forward into its greatest era o f growth and expansion to date. maxim, You can t take it with you.” Yet, as obvious as this is, there are those who act like they think otherwise. So many people seem to have set temporal goals that they are making ends in themselves. The goals may be basically sound, but they pursue them with intensity and fervor, as though those goals are all that really matter. The result is a warped system of values caused by misplacing life’s priorities.
An education, successful money management, and a paid-up mortgage are certainly important. Yet, they should be viewed as a means to a better end. They should free us to love and serve God with all our mind, heart, body, and soul. The fully comm itted Christian will acknowledge his role as a steward o f all of life—time, talent, and money. That kind of comm itm ent will allow God to direct each step. Our controlling desire will only be to know and do the will of God in all matters.

N eedham says, “G et a bunch o f C hristians together to talk about
stewardship and their conversation flows naturally in to the language o f obligation.” But the practice o f Christian stewardship is a joyful privilege.In the historical and biblical context, stewardship begins w hen we recognize G od as the source and ow ner o f all we have and ourselves as m anagers o f His resources. Stewardship is m ore than paying a tithe to m y church. It in cludes the m anagem ent o f one’s G od- given portfolio o f resources: financial, personal, physical, m ental, and relational.
Paying the scriptural tithe sends several signals abou t ou r a ttitude to ward God. In the first place it is the acknow ledgm ent o f G od’s ownership. It is also a token o f o u r surrender to G od, and o u r unity with H is purpose. Finally, it is a pledge o f our allegiance.
But stewardship is m ore than money. Visualize a train w ith its rail cars. It is a stewardship train. C ar one on this train is the tithe and offerings: “ Bring ye all the tithes in to the storehouse, th a t there m ay be m eat in m ine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord o f hosts, if I will n o t open you the w indows o f heaven, and pour you ou t a blessing, tha t there shall not be room enough to receive it” (M alachi 3:10).
C ar two on the stew ardship train is the C hristian’s tim e and energy in service and spiritual harvest: “Pray ye therefore the Lord o f the harvest, that
he will send forth labourers in to his harvest” (M atthew 9:38).
C ar three is the responsible in vestm ent o f the G od-given resources o f personality, life, and ta len t so tha t they produce eternal returns: “Lord, thou deliveredst un to m e five talents; behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. H is lord said un to him, Well done, thou good and faithful servan t” (M atthew 25:20-21).
Besides the fundam ental biblical basis for stew ardship th a t m akes us m an agers o f G od’s resources, I have learned a num ber o f lessons abou t giving. O ne is tha t a strong em phasis on tith ing can create som e perils. It m ay contribu te to a tendency to m ake the tithe “m axim um ,” not “m in im u m ” giving. Also there m ay be an inclination by the tither tow ard a legalistic attitude. G oing beyond carefulness to pay all the tithe, one becom es extra- cautious lest one is overpaid. It is also easy to assum e th a t a person m ay do w hatever he pleases with the rem aining n ine tenths. Those w ho tithe with effort m ay sit back and say, “ I’ve done my part.”
Secondly, I have learned th a t I need to give— even m ore than the church needs w hat I give. “T here is tha t scatte re d , and yet increaseth; and there is tha t w ithholdeth m ore than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. T he liberal soul shall be m ade fat: and he th a t wate re d shall be w atered also h im self” (Proverbs 1 1:24-25).

tween faithful stew ardship and the blessing o f God: “H o n o u r the Lord w ith thy substance, and with the first- fruits o f all th ine increase: so shall thy barns be filled w ith plenty, and thy presses shall burst o u t with new wine" (Proverbs 3:9-10).
G iving w ith faith and obedience opens the doors o f spiritual joy and victory. Joyful obedience raises the spiritual tide. Jesus said, “Give, and it shall be given u n to you; good measure, pressed dow n, and shaken together, and ru nn ing over, shall men give in to your bosom . For with the sam e m easure th a t ye m ete withal it shall be m easured to you again” (Luke 6:38). Paul rem inded Corinthian C hristians, “He w hich soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifu lly shall reap also bountifu lly” (2 C orinthians 9:6).

We are to give a joyous tithe unto the Lord. G ive readily w ithout begging. G ive gladly, for “G od loveth a cheerful giver” (2 C orin thians 9:7). Ask, “ How m uch can I give?” not “ How m uch m ust I give?” Don’t be afraid o f giving too m uch. The spirit o f tith ing and good stewardship is unselfish giving. True joy o f stewardship is in giving, no t receiving. “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to rem em ber the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said. It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). H

Mrs. M asked the m ost m eaningful question apatient could ask her physician: “ How are you doing w ith your ego problem ?”
I was delighted th a t I could assure her th a t therapeutic dilemma was in the hands o f the Almighty.
One way the problem ego is m anifested am ong m y colleagues is in the D estiny Syndrom e. This d isorder is characterized by th in ly veiled arrogance, frustration w ith lost time or unm et goals, bu t particularly by depression w hen it is felt that the w orld is being insufficiently im pacted. At the heart o f this m alady is the belief th a t being on this planet has som e special m eaning or tha t one has som e special destiny to fulfill. I’ve no ticed th a t this cond ition is not peculiar to physicians, bu t afflicts m ultitudes.
My own bout w ith th is cond ition probably had its roots in receiving special trea tm en t, first in C h ina as a m issionary kid, then in school as a bright student, and in A frica as a m issionary doctor. H aving a “call” from G od to special service for H im is easily m isin terpreted as being special to G od himself, and 1 m ust confess tha t 1 d id ju st that. So, when m y fam ily and I were refused re tu rn visas to South Africa som e years ago, bringing o u r m issionary careers to a heartbreaking end, I becam e acutely depressed. Rather than seeking G o d ’s will, I chose to storm heaven with my prayers to “un d o the w ork o f Satan.” I could not imagine not going back to Africa w hen m y colleagues had endorsed me an d the G eneral Board o f o u r in ternational church w anted to send me. But, as I prayed, 1 kept getting the answer back, “ I’m still on the throne.” I w ould rem ind the Lord o f m y m edical and linguistic skills, an d I'd get the same m onotonous answer.
Then some pieces o f the puzzle started to fit together.First was the discovery th a t the phrase, “hallow ed be Thy name,” from the L ord’s Prayer is in the im perative in the original Greek. W hile it m ight be translated: “M ay Your name be kept holy," the im perative m ood carries the force of: “0 , God, ACT! so th a t m en will revere an d ho n o r your name!” This was Jesus’ first priority for us in ou r prayer life. Was He no t prodding us to pray o u r way beyond the millions o f things th a t C hristians do th a t m ake G od look ridiculous? It appears, then, th a t Jesus is concerned not that we do noble deeds, b u t th a t we serve as w indow s to God’s holiness.
Another issue th a t I had been long exposed to, but had
delayed perm itting penetration in to m y thick skull, was the im port o f Paul’s testim ony th a t everything he had ever done paled in to insignificance next to know ing Christ. R em em ber w hen M artha was doing, and M ary was ju s t ado ring Jesus, th a t our Lord pu t H is stam p o f approval on M ary 's attentions. T he m ore we know H im , the m ore fervent ou r prayer: “M ake m e m ore like You!” Indeed, Jesus perform ed thousands o f noble deeds, bu t it is His spirit.H is attitudes, tha t Jesus asks us to copy. H e forgave rather than dem and justice; He loved in the face o f unbelief: He brought redem ption to those who failed H im . I began to see the connection: The L ord’s Prayer is answered and fulfilled, the Father is glorified, as I know Jesus the Pattern and allow the Spirit to cu t away from m y life and spirit all th a t does no t fit the pattern.
T hen the p icture began to clear th a t an em phasis upon m y career, m y destiny, is an em phasis upon self I was rem inded th a t Paul m ade no com plain ts about the ending o f his m issionary career in a R om an jail. He was totally yielded to w hatever service he could give his Lord. Closer hom e to me, I heard good people express the opinion tha t my father, R udolph Fitz, who had served as a m edical m issionary in China, was wasting his talents on a hom estead in Alaska. But D ad did not question tha t he was there by G od’s com m and. Did farm ing call forth the best o f the sen ior Dr. Fitz’s potential? Probably not. But it was w hat G od w anted at tha t tim e. A nd w hat difference does it m ake w hether any m an understands? The only one who needs to understand is the O ne who says, “I will build my church!” W hat am I doing in Redding, Calif.? I’m not really sure, except th a t I know this is where G od w ants me ju st now. I used to com plain to G od tha t I was being inap propriately utilized, bu t H is will is now m y destiny. A nd everything I am and have is safe in His hands.
T he D estiny Syndrom e eventually sets m an 's will against G o d ’s, m a n ’s plans in place o f His kingdom , and m an ’s status in opposition to the glory o f the Only Nam e. This m alady— a sick search for m eaning— paradoxically prevents its sufferers from finding m eaning. Jesus said, “He w ho would save his life will lose it, bu t he w ho w ould lose his life for m y sake will find it.” Yielding m yself as clay in G o d ’s hands, to be the vessel o f His choosing, achieves my highest destiny, even though I m ay suffer dishonor, for He still chooses w ith in fin ite w isdom and love. ADORNING
The essential nature o f G od is holy love. Surely that is som eth ing o f w hat the Psalm ist m eant when he said, “ Holiness be-
com eth th ine house, O Lord, forever” (Psalm 93:5). The New King Jam es reads, “Holiness adorns your house,” while the New A m erican S tandard says, “H oliness befits Thy house.” H oliness becom eth, adorns, befits G o d ’s house. “Becom es” m eans “to be suitable to in appearance, as, ‘tha t hat becom es you’” (W ebster’s New World Dictionary). So G o d ’s presence, as holy love, adorns His house.
The Beacon Bible C om m entary says, “ ‘H oliness becom eth th ine house, O Lord forever’ suggests separating G od’s house from the secular and profane and characterizing the people who worship there.” So holiness is the grace tha t adorns the very buildings in which we worship. C hurch buildings m ay be architecturally correct, have suitable and adequate furnishings, be graced with artistic and beautiful w indows— all o f w hich are good and needed. It is the grace o f holy love— G o d ’s presence— however, tha t adorns the sanctuary. W ith awe Isaiah exclaimed, “I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the tem ple . . . and one [seraphim] cried un to another, and said, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord o f hosts: the whole earth is full o f His glory’” (Isaiah 6:1-3, NKJV).
At the dedication o f Solom on’s tem ple, “It cam e to pass, when the
GRACEpriests cam e ou t o f the holy place, tha t the cloud filled the house o f G od . . . the glory o f the Lord filled the house o f the L ord” (1 K ings 8:10-11, NKJV). This, then, is the com pelling attractiveness o f o u r m eeting places. M ore than being taught by o u r m in isters and teachers. M ore than fellowship w ith fellow Christians. M uch m ore than the artistry o f beautiful congregational, choir, o r personal singing. T hat w hich will com pel the redeem ed to bow in w orship, and the lost to bow in repentance, will be the presence o f the Lord, high and lifted up and filling the congregation.
Note, further, th a t the earth is God's house. W hen Isaiah saw the fullness o f G o d ’s glory, he exclaim ed, “the whole earth is full o f H is glory!” (6:3,NKJV). D avid wrote, “T he heavens declare the glory o f G od; and the firm am en t shows H is handiw ork”(Psalm 19:1, NK JV). So the earth , too, is G o d ’s house; and H e adorns it with His w ork and con tinued care. The beauty and utility o f the snow th a t fell last night; the beauty and fragrance o f m y backyard rose garden; the m o u n ta ins all about, and the fields o f grain and garden on the plains between them ; the glorious western sunsets; the gorgeous rainbow s we saw in Scotland— all these dem onstra te G o d ’s holiness. H is holy love, in providing for His children.
We do hono r to G o d ’s holiness in His house, the earth, w hen we understand ou r stew ardship o f it. “T he Lord
G od plan ted a garden eastward in Eden, and there H e pu t the man w hom He had form ed” (Genesis 2:8, NK JV). Som ething o f the intent of m an 's stew ardship o f th a t beautiful garden is given in this verse: "Be still, an d know th a t I am G od; I will be exalted am ong the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10, NKJV).
T he hum an personality is the house o f God. even the hum an body, so m uch so tha t Paul seem ed astonished th a t anyone could be unaw are of it. “D o you not know th a t you are the tem ple o f G od and th a t the Spirit of G od dwells in you? . . . For the temple o f G od is holy, w hich tem ple you are” (1 C orin th ians 3:16-17, NKJV). “Or do you no t know tha t your body is the tem ple o f the Holy Spirit who is in you, w hom you have from God, and you are not your ow n” (1 Corin- thans 6:19, N K JV ). “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence o f the pow er m ay be of God and no t o f us” (2 C orin th ians 4:7, NK JV).
So o u r faulty bodies and personalities are temples! Tem ples— places where sacred things transpire. Our holy G od deigns to adorn them with His presence! We holiness people have been very forward and vocal about how not to adorn ourselves, especially o u r wom en! We quo te Paul: “In like m an n er also, tha t w om en adorn themselves in m odest apparel, with propriety and m oderation, not with braided hair o r gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works” (1 T im othy 2:9-10, NKJV). Now holiness does have its negative aspects. T he m odesty and sim plicity that Paul enjoins describe the holiness life-style. P rohibition o f alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, as well as worldly pleasures, are needed. T he m otivation, however, is no t th a t som e rules have been made, bu t th a t ou r bodies, our personalities, are the residence o f the Holy Spirit, and are adorned by what He does and allows.
A nother o f G od 's houses is the congregation o f believers. His holiness will adorn th a t com m unity, will make it look good. I have just finished a phone conversation with a fledgling pastor who had been confronted with crippling opposition by a woman of his church. She was, by her own testimony, “hateful and bitter.” We have enough o f th a t spirit, and other carnal

manifestation, to alarm us. “You are still carnal,” Paul accuses, “for where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere m en?" (1 C orin th ians 3:3, NKJV).
Our holy G od longs to m ake our fellowships different from that! “For you are the tem ple o f the living G od. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk am ong them . I will be their
G od, and they shall be My people’” (2 C orin th ians 6:16, NK JV). As the Holy Spirit dwells an d walks am ong us, yearns and broods over us. He will cleanse the carnal traits and so help us ou r infirm ities th a t o u r attitudes and actions will display His attractive holy love!
Love is ou r one excusable debt: “Owe no one anyth ing except to love one ano ther" (R om ans 13:8, NKJV).
Love is the greatest teaching: “ for you yourselves are taught by G od to love one ano ther” (1 Thessalonians 4:9, NKJV). Love is our m ost effective witness: “By this all will know tha t you are My disciples, if you have love for one ano ther” (John 13:35, NKJV). H

performed by highly skilled surgeons.Life and death often hang by a thread.For him, high d ram a occurred when he was called upon to participate in his first transp lan t operation. He tried to paint for m e a w ord picture o f this experience w ith its heretofore unseen sights and team -shared in terest and in- | volvement. T he to tal rem oval o f the § diseased heart and the proficient replacement w ith a healthy one m ade an indelible im pression upon his m ind.
While taking no th ing away from those dedicated to such medical marvels, this near-m iracle suggests an intriguing parallel in ano ther aspect o f m a n ’s being. Inspired writers have em ployed “heart" sym bolically to indicate the seat o f emotions and judgm ent, an d also the contro l cen ter o f one’s person. O ur Lord used th is m etaphor in rem inding his hearers th a t "o u t o f the heart" (M atthew 15:19) issue expressed evil and good.
For vividness and spiritual significance, no scriptural exposure o f the “h eart” m atches D avid 's in the peniten tial Psalm 51.
The apex o f th is m asterpiece o f con trition and spiritual renewal is the royal cu lp rit’s passionate plea: “C reate in me a clean heart. O G od; an d renew a right spirit w ithin m e”(v. 10). W hile th is is clim actic, som e in tim ate and personal confessions precede the sum m it a ttained in verse 10. No buck-passing here! T he full realization o f o n e’s personal responsibility and accountab ility for m oral choices was chronicled for succeeding generations to seriously con tem plate. Such u tterances as, “m y transgressions,” "m ine in iq uity,” and “m y sins” did no t spring from shallow rem orse.
The sym ptom s o f an unclean “heart” were realistically confronted by Israel’s king. Such soul-w renching utterances
as, “ Blot out my transgressions. Wash m e throughly from m ine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin" (vv. 1-2). are jarring rem inders tha t positive th in k ing cannot eradicate im m orality evil complicity, covetousness, and m urder— the heinous sins tha t produced D avid’s haunting guilt and remorse. This grave situation dem anded radical surgery. No “take-two-aspirins- and-go-to-bed” panacea would rejuvenate D avid’s d istraught inner spirit.His spiritual chart reflected the authoritative X-ray findings o f the Holy
Spirit. So absolutely reliable is H is diagnosis tha t no second op in ion is necessary!
W hen patients face life-threatening cardiovascular d ifficulties, confidence in the heart surgeon is o f vital im portance to the success o f the operation. Though “confidence” doesn’t show up on the sick person’s chart, its im portance can hardly be overestim ated.
Trust is the key word where Scripture focuses on “heart” needs. D avid evidenced such com plete trust in the M aster Surgeon w hen he declared: “The sacrifices o f G od are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O G od, thou wilt no t despise” (v. 17). O ne possessing keen spiritual perception affirm ed: “G od can, indeed, m end the broken heart, bu t He m ust have all the pieces.”
There can be no doub t tha t D avid’s pen tien t cry for heart cleansing was answered. The satisfactory “recovery signs” th a t followed in the wake o f this inner transform ation were evident in his subsequent rectitude. The joy o f salvation was restored and his oppressed spirit renewed. Through the centuries, great num bers o f pen iten t sinners have repeated this prayer, becom ing beneficiaries of the sam e im parted grace. H

“preacher’s kid,” and was able to cite num erous exam ples o f hypocritical church m em bers her family had know n in a series o f churches, people who testified on W ednesday nights to being saved and sanctified b u t whose lives did no t exemplify the perfect love they claim ed to have found, at least no t in the ir trea tm en t o f the m inister and his family. It was a story with which, unfortunately, m any P.K.’s could identify, b u t I sensed th a t K aty’s questioning o f church doctrine and practice w ent deeper than the recognition th a t every congregation has its troublem akers.
It was only gradually, as we began to develop a relationship o f trust, tha t K aty began to talk abou t her parents and how the ir lives a t hom e d id n ’t seem to m atch the perfection her fathe r preached from the pulpit. As a child she had obviously been very m uch in awe o f her father, an d still had great respect and adm iration for the dedication an d long hours he gave to the ministry. She had no doubts abou t his love for G od and the uprightness o f his life, bu t she did w onder how his harshness tow ard her and her two brothers w henever they did no t m easure up to the high standards expected o f them , and the occasional frightening ou tburst o f his anger, fit the doctrine. H er m o ther’s sanctification she had always questioned, for her m other had a very critical tongue and was an expert at finding fault and passing judgm en t on everyone.
I am no t a theologian, and it was no t m y jo b to defend N azarene doctrine, o r help K aty reexam ine her u n derstanding o f sanctification, o r pass judgm en t on w hether o r no t her parents were tru ly sanctified— b u t I did try to help her w ork th rough the sad
ness she experienced at growing up in a family where the m yth th a t paren ts were always right could no t be questioned, even though there were glaring discrepancies between w hat was preached and w hat was practiced. Because o f the m yth o f perfection th a t the whole family was expected to m aintain , there was a lo t o f p retending and no t m uch open and h o n est com m unication . K aty and her two brothers learned to tread carefully so as no t to “d isappo in t” o r upset the ir father, and to hide the ir d iscom fort w ith the ir father’s ou tbursts o r their m o ther’s sharp harangues. A nd when church people to ld K aty how lucky she was to have such sensitive and loving paren ts she felt p roud bu t co n fused . . . m aybe she was the problem ; if she tried harder things w ould be m ore com fortable a t hom e.

O ur family relationships m easure m ore effectively than any o thers how we are growing as C hristians as the Spirit produces in us the fruits o f love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.As we confess ou r shortcomings to G od, we are also instructed to confess o u r sins to each other. That kind of honesty and hum ility within the C hristian fam ily w ould allow each of us to be ourselves while encouraging each o ther tow ard the com mon goal o f becom ing m ore Christlike.
Back in the 60s the film “Love Story” p rom oted the lie that, “Love m eans never having to say you’re sorry.” Sadly the phrase hung around for a long tim e. It is so far from the tru th . If I tru ly care about the feelings, the needs and the growth of another person, then m y pride or my need for power will no t get in the way of confessing w hen appropriate, “I was wrong. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” We all depend on G o d ’s love and grace to forgive us for the many times we fail to be fully loving and patient and kind, and G o d ’s grace is available to us as we acknowledge and repent of ou r failures. In the same way our relationships w ith each other will be open and loving only as we acknowledge ou r im perfections, seek each other’s forgiveness, an d support each other’s growth.
In too m any fatnilies the children are expected to confess their mistakes and m isdem eanors while the parents never ad m it to being in the wrong, perhaps ou t o f fear that such an adm ission m ight underm ine their authority. M any o f the same parents have difficulty adm itting even to each o ther w hen they are wrong or when

they have hurt each other. W hat a burden for parents to have to carry— always to have the right answers, to appear in perfect control, an d how isolating not to be able to ask for u n derstanding, even from a spouse, in the struggle to learn and grow.
Katy is not the only child from a Christian hom e to have been troubled by the discrepancy betw een w hat her parents preached an d w hat they practiced, or to have been tem p ted later in life to reject the church, the gospel, and even the fam ily because o f hurts inflicted in childhood by the m yth o f family perfection. She m ight have been spared a lo t o f pain had her parents been free to m odel for the ir children the k ind o f ongoing dependence
on G o d ’s love and grace th a t K ari Torjesen M alcolm advocates. (Kari was born o f m issionary parents in C h ina and served w ith her husband and two children for 15 years as m issionaries in the Philippines.) G ra tefully she quotes a conversation w ith daughter, “You and Pa were both com m itted to the quest o f seeking tru th and doing w hat G od w anted us to do . . . Everything we did was subservient to that. As kids we could sense fakeness . . . T here w asn’t any huge generation gap because you were no t preachy and pious b u t always struggling to understand w hat C hristian ity m eant. We had a sense o f cam araderie. You were always open to question, attack, discussion, argu
m entation , an d negotiation. We d id n ’t have to go outside to raise questions. We were careful and cautious outside, bu t in the hom e we could be very vulnerable. Because I could air my doubts at hom e, m y faith is now un- shakeable.”
K ids always can sense fakeness. You w on’t convince yours th a t you’re perfect, bu t if you can share w ith them your struggle to grow, you can teach them a powerful lesson abou t the role o f G o d ’s grace at w ork in all o f our lives. H

LAST TRIP TO PRISONThirty-three-year-old Calvin has been in an d ou t o f
prison for the last 17 years. H e is com pleting a three-year sentence for burglary.
Calvin’s dad is an alcoholic; his m other w orked two jobs to support her husband an d five children. Calvin, being the youngest, always got the leftover clothing, the sm allest am ount o f food, an d was pushed aside in family disputes.In his fight for everything from food to identity, Calvin stole food an d candy from stores as part o f survival. Stealing becam e a way o f life.
Calvin grew up tough, an d m ean-looking enough to scare you in daylight. He was proud o f being a “thug” and causing people to fear his presence. People knew th a t when Calvin was presen t som eone or som ething was going to be attacked.
He w anted to change his life-style, yet back on the streets in the sam e env ironm ent, he always retu rned to the sam e old evils. He tried to figure o u t w hat he was doing wrong, and m ean tim e con tinued to re tu rn to prison again and again.
He felt it was society’s fault th a t he was in prison because “they” kicked him o u t o f school and now he has d ifficulty reading an d w riting. He sensed tha t his problem s were great, b u t he cou ld n 't figure them out. He lifted
weights to im prove his stature and image. He took m editation classes to help calm the anger and rage he felt inside.
Calvin hates prison life. He has know n the crowded two- m an cells where there is no privacy. He has had to stand in line for m eals eaten to the accom pan im en t o f noise. H e endures shake-downs, the moving, the waiting, the long hours and days, and the uncertain ty o f w hat will happen to him . In prison he knows he has no control over his life.
O ne day I said, “Calvin, your problem is not alcohol or drugs, no r is it your burglary, theft, o r terrorism . Your problem is your personality defect, an d the em ptiness and longing you feel w ithin to belong to som eone.” C alvin’s response: “Hey, no one ever to ld m e th a t before!”
Calvin, the street-wise, tough crim inal, was actually a frightened little boy inside, w anting som ebody to love him .
O ne day he accepted C hrist and change began to take place in this hard m an. As the Spirit o f G od, the father he never had, began to heal his fractured spirit and set him free, he searched w ithin to determ ine the changes he should make. He adm itted his low self-esteem, his fear o f rejection and hurt, and his need for som eone to care. He con tinued to trust G od for healing in all areas o f his life, and great change was evident
Calvin continues to lift weights. He is learning to read and write and is w orking on a general education degree. He attends Bible study, chapel services, and self-help programs. As a saved and sanctified m an Calvin will be a good neighbor for som eone, and an excellent addition to som e church. Best o f all, he has m ade his last trip to prison. H

holiness denom ination . We were conceived as such, have grown up w ith it, and are know n by it.
We are m arked forever by the doctrine o f entire sanctification as a second w ork o f grace.
This has been by design as well as by reputation . At the front o f som e o f ou r sanctuaries hang m ottoes proclaim ing “H oliness u n to the Lord,” although not as often as 40 years ago.
H oliness has been the them e o f a massive part o f ou r published m aterials and it form s a large segm ent o f our hym nals. It has been preached from our pulpits and proclaim ed from our pews for alm ost a century. It is our d istinguishing doctrine.
This is w hat m akes up-front holiness evangelism so vital for a continu ing church. O ur responsibility is to perpetuate it. A m inister in the den om ination m ust “have a deep sense o f the necessity o f believers going on u n to perfection and developing the C hristian graces in practical living” (M anual, 401.3). O ur officers are expected to possess, practice, an d pro
claim the experience. O ur m em bership is to “seek earnestly to perfect holiness o f heart and life in the fear o f the L ord” (M anual, 801).
H oliness people are som etim es accused o f preaching it a t the expense o f the new birth; o f m axim izing the second w ork o f grace and m in im izing the first. T hat is an incorrect assum ption, as a good look at us will prove. The experiences are tw o d istinct w orks o f grace, the new b irth being required before a person is a qualified seeker after sanctification. Both are in te rdependent.
If we are to be tru e to ou r heritage, the doctrine m ust be com m on in every place where proclam ation is possible, and it m ust be p u t on exhibition in ou r daily lives.
Edgar G uest was right w hen he w rote th a t he w ould rather see a serm on than hear one any day, b u t th a t does no t lessen o u r responsibility to proclaim scriptural holiness to those w ith w hom we com e in contact. In fact, lip an d life p roclam ation com pose the clear-cut w itness to th e reality o f sanctification. T here is som e
th ing w insom e and w inning about an up-front holiness testim ony backed by holy ethics in everyday life.
D ealing w ith the concept of overm uch preaching o f the doctrine, Dr.J. B. C hapm an observed that it was the preaching o f C anaan that got the Israelites to leave Egypt in the first place.
To preach regeneration, which delivers from the guilt o f sin, and not follow up w ith a message on sanctification, w hich delivers from the pollution o f sin, is a travesty on gospel truth.
If we believe, as John Wesley did, th a t we have been raised up to “spread scriptural holiness” around the world, then it m ust take the form o f up-front evangelism with us.
C arnal acts and attitudes must be d iscerned an d deplored. It takes courage to “reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine” (2 T im othy 4:2), bu t it m ust be done. U nsanctified people m ust be nudged tow ard the experience, but we had better clearly have it ourselves before we confront them .

tified experience is the intense desire to share the good news w ith others.This does not m ean dogm atic d ru m ming on the them e, b u t delightedly describing the experience. This is up front holiness evangelism in its m ost meaningful role.
On the church level it m ust exist in all areas of activity and influence. Bad attitudes in church voting, office seeking, and carnal m anagem ent-m an ipu- lation discredit the experience. G ood attitudes in give-and-take situations prove what we have inside.
Everything the church does, however indirect, m ust have as its u ltim ate goal "perfecting holiness in heart and life” in its people. C onducting revivals, making at least one o f the services on Sunday evangelistic in tenor, are not new to us; in fact they are expected.To see holiness in the everyday w ork of the church is an o th er thing, and it is a must for up-front w itnessing and winning.
On the personal level it is absolutely essential tha t we “show and tell.” To see holiness w orking in C hristians u n der pressure is powerful. People will listen to a person if they know he has “been there” and the experience is real to him personally.
O ne-on-one evangelism really works. A few people have been sanctified as they personally searched ou t the truth, b u t for the m ost part those who are sanctified first heard it from someone else. It was up-fron t evangelism th a t b rought us in.
If holiness is to survive in the next century we m ust reproduce, not retrench. There are those w ho are waiting for the good news tha t G od is able to pardon an d to purify. The truth will lie d o rm an t unless holy people respond to the m oving o f the Holy Spirit to spread the good news. R etrenchm ent is for the dying; rep roduction is for the living, and this is u p front holiness evangelism in action.
It m ust be discussed a round the ta bles in the hom e. It m ust be p ro claimed in the m arketplace. It m ust show clearly in ou r social gospel work. In the church, at th e sports arena, in the factory, in the neighborhood, and on the street, it m ust be part o f us. In a world th a t desperately needs it, up front holiness evangelism fills an in dispensable place. H

The Strength TTiat Silence
BringsNot m any people today are interested in living the silent life.
Preachers and laym en are fond o f talking, an d it’s ju s t not popular to be silent.
Last sum m er while I was on vacation I “sat in” on a church board meeting. I rem ained silent and learned a lot by listening.
Let m e invite you to live a quiet life. T he apostle Paul said, “M ake it your am bition to lead a quiet life . . . (1 Thessalonians 4:11, NIV). The K ing Jam es Version puts it th is way: “Study to be quiet.”
Since I teach at M idA m erica N azarene College I have often wished we offered a course in the college cu rricu lum called “Q uietness 201.” The overall objective for the course could be to develop in the professor and studen t som e Q uaker quietness. Perhaps the first part o f the sem ester could be spent in analyzing w hat I call the “quiet verses” in the Bible. A passage like Psalm 46:10 could be used for starters, for out o f the storm y and noisy 46th Psalm com es a qu ie t com m anding verse:“Be still, and know th a t I am G od . . .” (v. 10). In Psalm 37, D avid says: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for h im ” (v. 7,NIV). I like M artin L u ther’s translation o f this verse: “Be silent to G od, and let him m ould you.” My translation is, "S hut up, Barth, and let G od speak to you.”
M any people are asking the question, “How can I live a quiet life in a noisy g w orld?” I believe m ost o f us sTJare living life in w hat I call 5 the full court press. J
W hen a basketball coach w ants to upset ano ther team ’s tim ing w hat does he do? He often puts the full court press on the opposing team . It m akes the players move too fast, it destroys the ir rhy thm and tim ing, and often causes a turnover.
The sam e th ing happens to us in life. Life pu ts the full court press on us with its pressures and dem ands from o ther people. We are pressed by people’s dem ands on o u r tim e— our bosses, ou r wives, or som eone else. T he pressure starts the m om ent we are aw akened in the m orn ing by the ringing alarm clock. D uring the day we m arch to the d rum beat o f people’s dem ands. It seem s tha t som eone else controls the pace o f the day. A nd the tragedy is, you m ay never develop G od’s gam e plan for your life. I guess the final irony for m any people is tha t when they retire from the full court pressure o f life, the com pany gives them a gold watch, som ething they d o n ’t need in retirem ent.

A fter m editating on m any “quiet verses” in the Bible two thoughts strike me.
G od is quiet and m ust get us quiet to speak to us. The first 40 years o f M oses’ life were noisy years in Egypt. They were years spent in learning and soaking up Egyptian culture.
A fter 40 years in the Egyptian university, G od sent M oses to the desert for a postdoctoral course in sheep-keeping. M ethodist preacher John R. C hurch use to say th a t after M oses got his Ph. D. from the Egyptian university, G od had to send him ou t to the desert to see if he could undo som e o f the things his education had done to him . So for 40-years M oses w ent to school w ith the sheep and his ears were being trained to listen to G od. G od gave Moses a 40 year course in “Q uietness 201.” H e taught M oses how to listen to God.
T hen after 40 years o f silence G od appeared to him in a burn ing bush and com m issioned him for his work. Jesus’ life on earth was also filled w ith silence. In fact the first 30 years o f his life are called “the silent years.” They were spent in a carpenter’s shop listening to his H eavenly Father and earthly father. The lives o f M oses and Jesus rem ind us tha t G od is quiet and m ust get us qu ie t to speak to us. We live in a noisy world o f ghetto blasters, m ad drivers ho n k ing horns at us, children scream ing at parents an d parents scream ing at ch ildren— but G od is quiet.
T he second though t th a t strikes m e from a study o f the “quiet verses” in the Bible is this: M an is noisy and loves to talk.
As a college professor I am in a talking profession. I am paid to talk. I am expected to be a noisem aker. A nd I have discovered during m y 17 years o f teaching th a t professors are supposed to say som ething o f value, except during the m onthly faculty meetings. O ne day after a long faculty m eeting at the college m y father, who was then the presiden t o f the college, called m e aside. H e said, “Barth, I wish you would speak up m ore during the faculty meetings. You never say anything. You ju s t sit an d listen.” A nd I replied, “Dad, I have decided to practice Jam es 1:19 w hich says,‘My dear brothers [Barth], take note o f this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to becom e angry’” (NIV). W hy? Jam es 3:1 gives the answer: Because “we who teach will be judged m ore strictly."
I recently inherited m y father’s library, and one o f the books he gave m e is called Q uiet Talks on Prayer, by S. D. G ordon. G ordon says, “How few m en are strong enough to be able to endure silence. For in silence G od is speaking to the inner ear.”
So why not m ake it your am bition to lead a quiet life? Q uietness is a characteristic o f self-control and I have found tha t I w ork best in an atm osphere o f quietness. You will see in 1 Thessalonians 4 th a t holiness and quietness are Siamese twins. In verse 3 we read, “It is G o d ’s will th a t you should be sanctified” (NIV). Verse 7 says, “For G od did no t call us to be im pure, b u t to live a holy life” (NIV). T hen the apostle Paul links these two verses to verse 11: “M ake it your am bition to lead a qu ie t life” (NIV). I am finding th a t leading a quiet life helps m e learn to listen to G od and other people. Try it. You’ll like it. H

Talking About AIDS at Home
hould the church once m ore be know n as the laggard w hen it com es to the subject o f sex? The answer is no.
For too long the church has shied away from this topic. T he rest o f the world is certain ly n o t afraid o f it, but the church m ain ta in s— by an d large— its preoccupation with supposedly m ore respectable issues.
Nevertheless, w ith the AIDS scare, m ore and more people inside the church are being forced to deal with the problem . The positive ou tshoo t o f th is plague is the fact tha t those who heretofore were tim id abou t talking about sexual m atters are now being m ade to deal with such concerns.
Interestingly enough, G od has never been shy about the m atte r o f sex. H e has spoken concerning it from cover to cover in His Book. W hen it com es to sins o f the flesh— .adultery, fornication, hom osexual practice, incest—the Creato r has spoken out.
Therefore, H is church should follow His example and speak to the issue from the biblical perspective. This would certainly shed m uch light on an otherw ise dark subject.
N ot only has G od spoken concerning the evils of sexual misuse, bu t H e has also given m uch space to the glories of sexual sharing w ithin m arriage. Take, for instance, the

whole Book o f the Song o f Songs!Consequently, to be m ore accurate in term inology con
cerning the topic, one should speak o f sex in the light o f God's goodness and then regard lust as S atan ’s w arping o f God’s good provision. S e x then is no t som ething “dirty”; lust is tha t w hich is abho rren t to the holiness o f G od.
For the church to follow through in dealing w ith the AIDS spread, therefore, it should begin w ith the hom e— the Christian hom e. This is w here the in tim ate conversations can be held m ost tenderly.
Since AIDS is daily fare for the m edia, parents can find it convenient to tie in the ir teachings w ith the children to
som e o f the news coverage.For instance, the other
day a C hristian m other told m e th a t while driving the car w ith her teenage son, she and he qu ite naturally fell in to conversation about AIDS. Fie had been hearing abou t it from the news and so asked her som e questions abou t the m atter. This was a welcom e opportun ity for her to latch on to the topic and give the C hristian u n derstand ing concern ing sex.
If parents toss away these ready-m ade chances for d ialogue w ith the ir children, they are negligent regarding the ir responsibilities to in struct the ir own abou t m oral m atters. But if they m ove right into the opportunity, then they are used o f G od to aw aken w isdom w ithin the ir children.
W hat abou t the very small children? They, too, can be taught concern ing their physical bodies and the ir future responsibilities related to those growing frames. Naturally, the language used will be on the level o f the child; b u t early ch ildhood is where the instruction should begin.
Further, each child is an individual. Consequently, the language and though t con ten t used will depend on tha t in dividual’s level o f m aturation .
Since AIDS is a deadly disease, it is im perative tha t Christian m orality be stressed w ithin the C hristian household. It need no t be done w ith furrowed brow and pointed index finger, as if to scare the “living daylights” out o f the hearers. T hat will com m un ica te the no tion th a t the subject o f sex is a naughty one and to be feared.
Instead, as any o ther com plicated m a tte r needs careful w ording an d reasoned approaches, so does this subject. Therefore, w orn cliches m ust be pu t aside, as well as quick, staccato sta tem en ts o f prohib ition , in favor o f a calm, though t-ou t dialogue.
Listening is also an im p o rtan t part o f com m unication . Stern lectures by C hristian paren ts are no t effective. W isdom allows the children to open up w ith the ir own questions so paren ts know w here they are in the ir own understandings.
Then the sensitive Christian parent can piggyback on the ch ildren’s knowledge, grafting the biblical position onto their perception. M ore tim es than not, after tha t setting is formed, the conversation will follow through quite n a tu rally.
Not everything abou t the issue m ay be covered in one sitting. T hat is why it is so im portan t tha t AIDS— and all sex issues— be talked about in the Christian household. There people con tinue to return to one ano ther for further discussion, and knowledge gains a natural progression.
Over tim e, the children should com e to an awareness tha t the ir own parents are knowledgeable concerning the Bible and practical, sexual m atters. And. ju st as im portant, they will com e to the conclusion tha t such topics are open for talking out freely.
The C hristian paren t has aw esom e opportun ity to in struct his own concerning the traps o f lust— the disease, em ptiness, lack o f fulfillm ent, and destruction o f G o d ’s good gift o f sex w ithin marriage. M ore specifically regarding AIDS, the paren t m ust teach the children tha t hom osexual practice can bring on this disease, m ust never be en tered into, and is not allowed by God.
The AIDS scare also allows the paren t to point out how the innocen t can suffer, tha t is, the children born to AIDS m others as well as those who have been given blood transfusions w ith AIDS con tam inan ts in them .
Just as significantly, the AIDS plague affords the C hristian paren t the setting by which to hold up Christian m orality— sex as a gift from the Lord, such sharings to be experienced only w ithin the divine blessing o f marriage.
If the C hristian hom e knows o f a person who has AIDS, this is still ano ther area for discussion. How do we relate personally to such persons? W hat is our Christian concern for these individuals as their illnesses progress? How can we aid them spiritually?
Som eone said to m e recently th a t he w anted a list of things tha t the C hristian father can teach his children concerning this m atter. I replied th a t there is no such list; it is not tha t simple.
Instead, there is a setting tha t we m ust find. It is th a t m ilieu in which parents and children discuss life-and-death m atters in the light o f the Bible. For some, it m ay be difficult since lives sim ply pass one ano ther in the rush. All the more then, the AIDS issue and sexual m atters should prod us in to relating m ore personally to one ano ther w ithin the home.
W ithout a packaged plan handed to us, we C hristian parents m ust look for those chances to use our own creative energies in talking with children. This will engender som e familial adventure in dialogue tha t m ay open up other areas o f talk.
It is the C hristian setting o f biblical understanding tha t is so crucial. W hen tha t is there, lively topics— including AIDS— can bob up. There they can be treated with an im ation, depth, and godly wisdom.
In the process, families are draw n closer to one another. And as they are, they are kn itted heart to heart, enabling them to confront the m ost th reatening attacks on existence.

live through the night. The heart attacks he had suffered caused over 60% dam age, and a person could not be expected to survive more than 40%.
Ruby M cClung looked dow n at her dying husband and struggled to recall Psalm 57. “Be merciful un to me, O G od, be merciful un to m e” (v. 1).
She w atched her grandchildren file into the Intensive Care room for w hat m ight be the ir last visit w ith “G randdaddy.” Jack’s eyes brightened and he tried to cheer them by prom ising his g randdaughter Pammy, “ I’m gonna m ake it— there’s a big catfish at the end o f D avid’s dock w aiting for me.”
Ruby smiled. An avid fisherm an since his first fishing trip at age five. Jack loved his visits to the lake. Since retirem ent from the m inistry in 1981, he had enjoyed m any pleasant hours fishing w ith his handm ade lures, easily stocking his ice chest w ith good- sized fish.
M ore than a fisherm an though. Jack becam e a “fisher o f m en ” when he was called into the m inistry at 16. O ver the years G od form ed him into a custom -m ade lure o flove.
T hursday m orn ing the nursing staff was so pleased Jack had survived the night they
pinned pictures o f the grandchildren to the bulletin board in his room with hypodermic needles.
T he cardiologist still could not offer m uch hope, however. Surgery was needed to repair a rup tu red heart muscle, but it would have to wait until his condition improved or Jack w ould not survive the operation. Until such tim e, his heart desperately needed help to con tinue functioning.
Early the next day a heart catheterization was perform ed. In addition , a foot-long balloon-pum p was positioned inside the ao rta leading to the heart. The balloon- p u m p is quickly in fla ted and deflated with helium in tim e w ith the beating of the heart, m aking its pum ping m uch easier. The synchronization o f th is procedure is critical. A nurse had to sit beside Jack 24 hours a day to m ake any necessary adjustments.
T he p um p had been in tact for a week w hen doctors advised Ruby that surgery could no t be postponed any longer. Without it Jack would no t live. Even with surgery, he w ould only stand a 10 percent chance of recovery.
Jack and his family knew his life was in the hands o f the Lord as he went into surgery early the next m orning. Many faithful people had lifted Jack in their prayers and con tinued to do so. The prayer chain was activated at R ichardson C hurch of the Naz-

arene where Jack is in charge o f co m m u n ications. Word cam e tha t friends and churches th roughout Texas and o ther states were petitioning G od for Jack’s healing. A lady Ruby had visited w ith in the ICU waiting room assured her she w ould “stand in the prayer line at chu rch” for Jack.
During the surgery; Ruby kept her Bible open to Psalm 57. “ My soul truste th in thee: yea, in the shadow o f thy wings will 1 make my refuge, until these calam ities be overpast” (v. 1). T he assurance o f G o d ’s protection brought a sense o f calm ness to her spirit.
Although one artery had to be bypassed and a valve replaced, the operation did not take long. T he surgeons cam e ou t o f the operating room am azed. It seem ed the peripheral capillaries alone in Jack ’s heart had been responsible for keeping him alive until the time o f surgery.
Out o f recovery and back in his room in ICU, Jack opened his eyes to see R uby and his family gathered a round his bed. U nable to speak with his th roa t full o f tubes, he weakly spelled the letters “R-U-B-Y B-E-S-T” w ith his finger on his bed.
Jack found it nearly im possible to rest following the surgery because his breath ing was difficult and he was experiencing so much pain. H is cond ition becam e plagued with com plications including kidney failure, blood poisoning, diabetes, and a dangerous chemical im balance th a t to ld his body not to breathe. At one point. Jack becam e so weak he felt h im self “slipping in to the shadows,” bu t he later knew th a t the m any prayers o f those petition ing G od for his recovery pulled him back. He always felt the assurance o f being in G od 's will and felt privileged to tell o thers o f G od 's love for them w henever he was able.
A couple o f weeks afte r the surgery it become obvious tha t Jack was finally beginning to recover. T he hospital s ta ff was thrilled, yet incredulous. They knew that while Jack’s healing w asn’t instan taneous, it was no less a miracle.
This fisher o f m en wove a net o f love during his long fishing trip at the hospital. Now he could look forward to a trip to the lake after doctors told Ruby she could bring him home.
Recovery has com e slowly but on Septem ber 10, 1987. Jack and R uby celebrated their 50th w edding anniversary. T hrough the calam ities they had proved G od and He was merciful. T heir souls’ trust is in the Lord. Together they m ake the ir refuge in the shadow o f H is wings. H

Paradise" describes the splendor o f that late afternoon in Central Florida during August o f 1987. The day had been a scorcher. The sun was beginning to drop in the West, and som e rain clouds were slowly becom ing visible as the cooler breezes off the A tlantic pushed them over the Tam pa Bay Area.
W hat a setting for a m otorcycle ride! My pastor husband, Mel, is a w orkaholic whose only hobby is cycling. I’m a hom e girl and cycles are no t m y bag, bu t a cool ride with my husband after a long hot day seem ed a perfect way to relax.
A few miles passed u nder the cycle wheels and the clouds intensified. It was obvious th a t we w ould m eet the storm . The clouds were heavy. L ightning cracked across the sky, while the th u n d er was deafening. We stopped under an overpass, soaked to the skin. In m inutes the storm passed and we con tinued our ride on dry road as the dying sun peered th rough the clouds on the western horizon.
Part o f a cycle trip includes stopping for a cup o f coffee, a sandwich, w hatever we feel like. We were passing through Lakeland, running north on Route 98 when tragedy struck!
A confirm ed alcoholic, inebriated and loaded with barbituates, shot across the m edian while attem pting a U -turn and bum ped in to the side o f our cycle. We did no t go down, and he decelerated. His license had been revoked earlier for D.W.I. and had ju st been reinstated.
Realizing he was in big trouble, he decided to clear out and m ashed the pedal to the m etal, h itting us again, this tim e at full throttle. Friends o f ours, trailing on ano ther cycle, were sideswiped bu t sustained only property damages. We absorbed the b ru n t o f the blow.
I have no m em ory o f the accident period, bu t our riding partners and m y husband have reconstructed the incident with the help o f eye-

witnesses. The im pact knocked me through the air 30-40 feet. I landed on my head. My husband was p inned under the 900-pound bike as it rode him down the highway. He was badly bruised, road-burned, and bleeding lightly. The handlebars hit the curb, flipping the bike into the air over the striking auto. It wedged under the front wheel o f tha t car.My husband finally controlled his siide and quickly ju m p ed to his feet.
His first reaction was to find me. O nly m om ents had passed, and he found me on my face m otionless. No breath, no pulse— he thought I was dead. Just then I gasped and he realized I was badly injured.
My cyclist friend said, “Lil, you’ve got to m ake it and we’ve got to pray.” Just then a C hristian w om an cam e up, a stranger to us, and prayed with Mel and me. Then she called the local C hristian radio station, requesting widespread prayer for w hat appeared to be a dying w om an.
An am bulance arrived, and the trip to the hospital was a “hot run." 1 revived enough to pray silently, “Oh Jesus, please help m y left leg," and then lapsed in to unconsciousness. My husband rode in shredded clothes and oozing blood on his back, bo th elbows, knees, and shins. W hat a sight he was when the orthepedic surgeon. Dr. Sklenicka, stopped to see him and our daughter, Jenny. The surgeon said, “ I doub t if I can save her.” He returned to them in about 30 m inutes to say, “I th ink we can save her, but we will probably be forced to am putate her left leg.”
Five specialists had been assessing the needed repair. They tapped the spleen— it was clear. A catheter proved the urine to be clear. It seem ed that no in ternal injuries could be found. Dr. Sklenicka and the neurologist, Dr. G riffith , cam e ou t one m ore tim e to say th a t I was going to live and they could save m y left leg. T hat was the good news. Prayer does change things.
The bad news was th a t the surgeon had found a broken neck, both arm s broken at the shoulder, broken ribs and pelvis, a crushed ball in the left hip, a left leg all but severed at the knee, com pound fractures and five breaks below the knee, and teeth broken and chipped.
Surgery began about m idnight. Dr. Keith V ennum , form er N azarene m issionary to South Africa, was the anesthesiologist. He told m e afterward he put me to sleep while reciting the 23rd Psalm. His prayers and those o f m any others who had now jo ined the intercessory band m ade the difference. Cervical vertabra No. 3 was broken, but there was no spinal cord dam age and no paralysis. A halo was ruled unnecessary; only a Philadelphia neck brace was used. My hip was repaired w ith a new ball jo in t and liner; a “nail” eight inches long was p u t in the leg, and the leg was clam ped and sewed.
I was totally helpless— neck, arm s, and leg im m obile. I could not feed myself, or scratch, o r in any way help myself. I was swollen and bruised all over for weeks. It was first thought m y hospital stay would be m easured in m onths, bu t I was there just under three weeks. A no ther m iracle!
Healing was beginning. In fact, things were going so rapidly that the oxygen in m y blood was insufficient for my need and they added three pints o f blood to the four pin ts transfused during surgery.
So m any visitors and such a volum e o f m ail cam e tha t the hospital staff inquired, “W hat celebrity is this?” A senator had been in for surgery and had nowhere near the visitors nor mail. O ver 700 cards were sent. Phone calls cam e daily from around the country w ith prayer and get- well wishes offered.
I am grateful to J. V. M orsch, ou r district superin tendent, and his wife for their prayers and visits. A special person while I was at Lakeland Regional H ospital was Rev. H erb Agee, pastor o f Lakeland First Church.He never missed a day at the hospital and still called me weekly after I went hom e. I appreciate his encouragem ent and prayers.

me? W ho am I, really? Doi have brothers and sisters?" These are ju s t a few of the nagging
questions th a t adopted children eventually face. Som e begin asking as youngsters, som e as teenagers. Still o thers begin to inquire as they reach adu lthood and enter into their own parenting experiences.
Issues o f adoption touch our churches, for w ithin them are caring loving adults w ho have opened their lives to children who are not theirs by birth. A tim e com es when they must face the question, “W ho are my real parents?”
A doptive parents approach this time w ith reactions that vary from denial to to tal acceptance. Perhaps a look at the “birth search question” can aid adoptive parents in dealing with the crucial issue o f the ir children’s roots.
T he question o f “who I am” pushes m ost o f us to find our identity and purpose in life. For adopted children, even those raised in the most nurtu ring C hristian homes, a piece of life is missing. T hat piece connects them to an unknow n past. They have a nor-

mal, natural need to know all abou t that past.
In a recent publication , C incinnati Magazine, Steve Harris, an adult adoptee, addressed th is need to search for information abou t his natu ra l fam ily.
He related, “ I'd had a great childhood, great parents, and a great growing up. My parents told m e at a young age that I was adopted . It left a nagging thought o f w ho m y b irth m other was.”
Steve’s in terest in his roots in tensified when he and his wife decided to add to their fam ily th rough adoption , in pre-adoption classes, Steve m et o th ers who w anted to search. T heir co n cern had no th ing to do w ith the quality of their adoptive hom e, he learned there. It was a norm al need and did not mean he was ungrateful.
"Encouragem ent to search is m et by varying reactions,” according to a C incinnati area psychologist. “A dopted children can be preoccupied with where they cam e from.” A nother child specialist com m ented th a t “ It is a yearning th a t is always there. If it is not fulfilled it persists as an unfulfilled wish o f fantasy. . . . Searches can be com plex and som etim es absolutely relentless. I had one boy settle dow n and get on with his life when he found his m other’s grave.”
An O hio adoptive m o ther o f eight children, Judy W hipp, feels strongly that adopted ch ildren need freedom to search for answers to questions not yet asked. A doptive paren ts som etim es react negatively w hen children desire answers.
This negativism , she said, probably stems from one reason, two causes.The reason is fear. O ne cause o f tha t fear is the parents' desire to protect their child— the fear th a t the ir ch ild ’s discovery will be the ir undoing. Par
ents m ay also fear tha t their child 's discovery will d isrup t the relationship between the child and the adoptive parents.
"Som e 18- to 21-year-olds." Judy m entioned, “are still unrealistic about w hat they will discover. They expect to find out tha t the ir natural parents now have it all together and will welcom e them w ith open arm s. T hat rarely happens.”
Som e adoptive parents feel th rea tened by the child 's desire to search for roots. They fear they m ay lose their child 's affection, o r th a t in som e way they have failed as parents. They are reluctan t to encourage the child’s birth search due to the overw helm ing fear that the discovery will dissolve the family unit.
A ccording to Judy, m any adopted children do begin a b irth search. However. only a sm all percentage actually follow through and m eet their natural family. Just getting the in form ation seem s to satisfy the need to know.
Judy and her husband. Bill, w ho led an active adoption support group in southern O hio, assum e a position of “openness” regarding the delicate issues surrounding adoption. In successfully handling a m ultitude o f adoption issues, she advises the following:
1. A family m ust be com fortable with the idea o f adoption.They m ust be willing to understand and accept the lifelong dynam ics tha t ap pear, disappear, and reappear in the heart and m ind o f their child. They m ust be willing to u n derstand w ithout personal th reat or guilt.
2. Parents should inform the child o f the adoption early and share w hat inform ation they do know on a gradually increasing ba-SIS.
3. If a child desires to search, parents should be open and sup
portive. The child is not rejecting his adoptive family, but following a normal, natural need to know.
4. A lot o f ground work needs to be laid before the search begins. This can be accom plished by com m unicating as a family and through counseling. W hat the adoptee unravels m ay prove painful. The adoptive parents will need to support the search to the degree they can. W hat m ay slip from P andora’s box is uncertain and the adoptive parents m ay be needed to pick up the pieces.
5. The adoptive parents also need support during a child’s questioning tim e. They need to be reassured and encouraged. C hurches who are sensitive can offer real ministry' to families experiencing this period in their lives.
The feelings o f one adult adoptee well describe the d ilem m a consum ing som e adopted children: “The goal for me in searching was to fulfill a void. I describe my life as a circle with one half a piece missing. My searching allowed m e to com plete the circle and proceed with the rest o f my life.” H

PRISON MINISTRIES
My earliest experience of preaching to prisoners took place in Miami, Fla., at the Dade County jail. 1 was then a young, awkward exhorter, not yet engaged in full-time ministry.
Additional experience was gained in city jails, county jails, and state prison camps in Florida and Georgia. Response to my efforts ranged from reverent and appreciative attention to mocking contempt. In preaching services and in personal witnessing, a number of dramatic conversions occurred.
In those days fewer Christians were taking interest in prisoners than now. Increasing numbers of lay- people and of clergy are currently ministering to the incarcerated. Volunteers, together with prison chaplains, are conducting programs of preaching, teaching, counseling, and correspondence that touch thousands of prisoners’ lives.
And in prisons the Holy Spirit has been powerfully at work. Steadily increasing numbers of men and women are finding peace with God through Jesus Christ as they believe the gospel. Hearts and lives are being transformed, and the influence of Christian prisoners is becoming a fruitful means of reaching
yet others for the kingdom of God. Prayer groups and Bible study classes are providing a heartening fellowship for those whose lives were terribly bleak and lonely before.
In all of this we rejoice. For those who visit the imprisoned as ambassadors of Christ we pray. Whatever their crimes have been, men and women who repent and trust Christ will be saved, becoming members of Christ’s Church and invested with hope. All have sinned, Christ died for all, and the gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes. The grace of God cannot be barred from those who are confined in prisons. His love can penetrate the thickest walls, the bleakest cells ever constructed.
Support prison ministries. Where possible, participate in them personally. These ministries are part of what it means to go into “all the world” and to “make disciples” among all nations.
THE MADMAN
General Charles Gordon, famed English soldier, returned from duty in China a hero. People assumed he was rich, for others had exploited their China experience to gain wealth. When he told reporters that he had refused the wealth offered him, they couldn’t believe it. Neither were they convinced when he expressed indifference to promotions and publicity.They were especially skeptical of his earnest, candid Christian faith.
William Butler wrote, “On the strength of precisely these three things— faith, disregard of money, and straightforward honesty of thought and speech, he was . . . regarded by many of the m andarin and ruling classes of his fellow-countrymen as a madman.” The world cannot understand one who lives unselfishly and is indifferent to wealth and honors so avidly pursued by most leaders.
Let’s face it— the world’s cynicism has often been confirmed by the behavior of the church. Too many within the churches, calling themselves Christians, are no different in attitude and life-style than the bla
tant m am m on worshipers who dominate society. Status, titles, and awards have been as eagerly sought and proudly displayed within the churches as among the outsiders. The world’s criteria of success have been unblushingly adopted by professing Christians.
The person who does not scrabble for money, who refuses to exploit another’s disaster to his own advantage, who is quietly content with a name unadorned with titles, who tells the truth when honesty exposes him to loss— that person is an oddity in our world. How can journalists, so accustomed to “angles” and “fixes” and self-promotions, resist the thought that self-effacing Christians are a bit looney?
The life and teaching of Christ cuts a diameter at right angles to the philosophy and practice of the world. Anyone who resolutely follows Him will stick out like a swollen thum b in a society where the left hand cunningly calculates what the right hand shall seize. But the Christlike will have peace and joy that forever eludes those who look out for number one.

NO DISCHARGE
“The battle’s not over till the last amen.” That is the chorus line of a song written by M ark Murphy.He introduced the song in a camp meeting where I was privileged to share the preaching tasks with Gary Haines.
Some folks assume that one decisive victory has brought the warfare to an end. No, the devil is too persistent, in his malignant hatred for God, to surrender the field. He will lick his wounds, plan his moves, and jum p on you again when you least expect him to pounce.
When Jesus engaged the devil in fierce combat, defeating him in the power o f the Spirit and by the use of Scripture, the devil “departed from Him until an opportune tim e” (Luke 4:13, NKJV). Cruel and crafty devil that he is, he never goes far or stays away long. He will be snapping at the Christian’s heels until the gates of heaven are reached.

In my early ministry a woman said to me, “I’ve carried the burden and done the work in this church for years. I’m through. Someone else can do it from now on.”
Being young, green, and deficient in diplomacy, I replied kindly, “Sister, I’m going to pray that the Lord will take you home to heaven.”
She recoiled and exclaimed, “D on’t you dare!” “Well,” I persisted, “if you’re not going to be any
earthly good you might as well go on. We have a small church and we can’t get the work done unless everyone pitches in.”
Bless her heart, she pitched in.I’m sure we all get tired and even get discouraged
from time to time. Nevertheless, we must not quit.We need to m uster fresh courage and renew the attack, trusting God for victory.

NO TIM E TO K ILL
I was preaching in a camp meeting in South Carolina when my watch died. My faithful old Timex, whose waterproof and shockproof qualities had been severely tested, expired without a m urm ur. For the rest of the camp meeting—a period o f five days— I had to depend on a small travel clock and on surreptitious glances at other people’s wrist watches to know the time.
By tim e the camp meeting ended I had become aware of how time-conscious and time-oriented I am. Of course, with a schedule of four services and three meals a day, an occasional glance at the sun’s position was insufficient guidance. But I was frequently checking on the time, like a m an required to meet all incoming flights.
The nature o f tim e baffles me. The contrast between tim e and eternity staggers my mind. The division of tim e into segments measured by calendars and clocks is, to my thinking, a marvelous invention. Everything about tim e is fascinating to me.
W hat impresses me most, however, is the swiftness
and irreversibility of tim e’s flow. How rapidly the years have passed since the tim e recorded in my earliest memories! How soon my allotted years upon earth shall be spent! “Life,” said a great saint, “is a fragment of eternity broken off at both ends.” It is short, indeed, from one broken end to the other.
This “march of tim e— usually at quick step— invests the days with urgency. Not with tension, not with anxiety, but with importance are the days of life freighted. I have no tim e to lose, no time to waste, no time to kill. Time m ust be filled with significant labor, with earned rest, with worthwhile relationships.
Here, as in all things, my choicest example is Christ. He filled His life on earth with periods of unselfish labor interspersed with strategic withdrawals, and all of His time with people contributed to their benefit. He was not rushed, but He made time count. That is how I want to spend the days in which I am being spent.

HE ANSWER CORNERIn Romans 14:22 Paul writes, “So
whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and G od” (N IV ). W hile he is speaking specifically o f meat offered to idols, is it not generally agreed that this pertains to nearly all nonessentials o f Christian belief and living?
W ith other N azarenes, 1 am bothered about how our M an u al grows after each general assem bly with clarifications to scriptural precepts on Christian living. A restoration o f apostolic Christianity, rather than more “guidelines,” is what we need.
T his leads to a specific question. On our district couples who are called to pastor churches are told by the district superintendent to shed their wedding rings. T his is not done uniformly in our denomination but rather by the scattered arbitrary personal taste of som e district superintendents, is it not? We strongly back the family structure as foundational under Christ. W hy tear at it by barring the unity sy mbol of the ring to our pastors? R ings need not lessen their devotion to Christ.

First o f all. the M anual is concerned about w hat is essential to holy living as well as w hat is essential to becom ing a Christian. O ur general assemblies have been concerned about the church’s being but also abou t its well-being. For this reason, “guidelines” or “rules" have been provided.
You find a lot o f sim ilar “rules” and “guidelines” in apostolic Christianity. However, ju st as som e o f theirs were
addressed to cultural situations that do not exist for us. som e o f ours are addressed to cultural situations tha t did not exist for them . It is neither wrong nor bad to have them if they are scriptural in principle and application.
As to your specific question, two kinds o f au thority have always existed in churches, including ours— the au thority that is legally constitu ted and the authority that is personally arro gated. The m aking and enforcing o f rules not in the M anual is an exam ple o f the latter. There is no M anual p rohibition o f w edding rings. It seems to me tha t pastors should not be governed by different rules on different districts.
Som e o f the holiest m en I have know n wore wedding rings. Som e o f the unholiest did not. The reverse is also tru e— som e o f the holiest did not wear rings and neither did som e o f the unholiest. Som e o f ou r godliest preachers have opposed w edding rings, and so have som e who were cranky and crooked. The presence or absence o f the wedding ring proves no th ing in this case. A loving or unloving a ttitude does, and tha t can be evidenced by one whose finger is ringed or naked.
I have been trying to find in the B ible w here the fallen angels were put out o f heaven. I find som e scripture in Revelation, but I thought I had read it in the O ld T estam ent. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
You are referring, 1 assum e, to Revelation 12:7-9, which speaks o f “war in heaven” between “M ichael and his angels” and “the dragon and his a n
gels." The dragon and his angels are “throw n dow n to the earth."
M ichael appears in Scripture as the “patron-angel" o f Israel (Daniel 10— 12). Here he is presented as the defender o f G o d ’s people against Satan and his cohorts. T he purpose of the passage is to show tha t on earth Satan and his forces are defeated powers even though they rage intensely against the people o f G od.
As for the Old Testam ent, you may be th ink ing o f Isaiah 14:12, which speaks o f “Lucifer, son o f the morning" as "fallen from heaven.” The whole passage, beginning in verse 4 and con tinu ing th rough verse 21 is a “ta u n t song” addressed to “the king of Babylon,” depicting the future judgm ent o f G od upon him , by which he will be toppled from his throne and com e to his death.
Som e Bible scholars have understood the passage to refer essentially to the fall o f Satan, w ho is addressed in the person o f his earth ly representative, the king o f Babylon. This interpretation is not the only possible one, o r even the m ost probable one, however.
O ne th ing is sure, Satan and his forces are clearly depicted in Scripture as judged and overcom e by Him who is the R ing o f kings, ou r Lord Jesus Christ.

In reply to the Answer C orner concerning the pun ishm ent o f rape (M arch 1. 1988). it should be pointed out that the principle o f the Scriptures quoted shows G od 's divine order for sexual honor am ong His people, and that the religious law was also the civil law for the com m unity at tha t time.
The offender o f an innocent victim
was punished by death. If not betrothed, the dam age for rape was a fine, a larger one if the father did not th ink the rapist would be a suitable marriage partner. The situation was not a m atte r o f equality. It was one o f custom and culture in the patnarch ia l system o f the O ld Testam ent. To u n derstand the outrage o f tha t society to ward rape, one has only to read 2 Sam uel 13 to learn o f the catastrophic events tha t followed the rape of Tamar.
Rape is not m entioned in the New
Testam ent. N either are m any of our present-day crim es. Jesus did honor in M atthew 5:28 the sexuality of women. The church should voice long and loud its objection to this crime. The political state is already moving in tha t direction.

troversy on this subject. Evangelicals do not need to hear yet an o th er polemic against evolution. Many, perhaps most, o f the books on this subject that line the shelves o f C hristian bookstores are n o t objective or intellectually honest. T he evidence in nature is no t on the side o f the “recent creationists.”
What we need is straight talk abou t scientific integrity and the willingness to be objective in the face o f d isquieting theories an d observations. Above all, everyone in th is con tro versy could use a large dose o f h u mility. If G od should choose to fully reveal His ways in nature, 1 am sure there would be plenty o f surprises for everyone.

Across the years I have often reflected on the m inistry of B. W. M urphy. He left the teaching profession and attended Asbury College for his m inisterial training. M ost o f his m inistry was in the S outheast U.S. He pastored several churches, b u t his burden was grass roots evangelism. His last years o f m inistry were in full-tim e evangelism.
W hat vividly im pressed m e abou t “Uncle B un” was his ability to persuade people to becom e Christians. He had a com passionate personality th a t was difficult to resist. Som e m inisters are persuasive from the pulpit, o thers in one-on- one relationships, bu t he could do bo th well. He w ould o ften leave the pu lp it an d persuade a loved one to com e to
C hrist during the invitation. O n one occasion, failing to en tice with words, he picked up a m an and carried him to the altar!
U ncle Bun was G o d ’s agent to lead m e to the Cross. D uring my high school days I drifted into agnosticism. I would go to hear him preach, bu t I doubted w hat he preached. He used to take m e on fishing trips and on preaching assignm ents. 1 told him I doubted w hat he preached, but I liked him. He enjoyed w hat he was saying, often interspersing serm ons w ith shouts o f praise. A fter I becam e a C hristian, 1 realized th a t fishing trips and com panionship were parts o f his strategy to reach me for Christ.

Chaplain W enger p re sen ted a 15- minute video on the Wednesday N ight C hu rch Based R esp ite Care Program he leads in the Parsons, Kans., church in cooperation with Parsons State Hospital and Training Center where he has been employed since 1981.
The congress drew 700 delegates from 40 states and 4 foreign countries to share and to learn f ro m e a c h o th e r . S e v e r a l churches sent the staff person designated as minister to special needs persons. At least 10% of the population has a handicap, and most people will develop a significant limitation before they die. This makes evangelism of those with disabilities pertinent to the work o f Christ. □

Cecil Crawford, Phoenix, said the award is “established to focus a t te n t io n a n d th e re b y b rin g added recognition and honor to selected women whose lives and accomplishments m ark them as outstanding role models for to day’s young women.”

O ther than your decision for Jesus Christ, the person that you may marry and the family that you build is the most im portant thing in life to you . . . the loving re la tio n sh ip s th a t you bu ild w ith in the family, w ho loved you, whom you loved, and what you felt together. . . are the things that will m atter to you."

PLANS PROGRESSING TOWARD 22ND GENERAL ASSEMBLY
A lthough p lan n in g for the 1989 General Assembly in Indianapolis has been underway for many months, the work has increased to a faster pace in recent days, according to General Secretary B. Edgar Johnson. He says arrangements for the 22nd G eneral Assembly are beginning to finalize.
“The excitement surrounding our Nazarene family reunion is growing,” said Johnson. “We arc expecting as many as 50.000 for our conventions and assembly.
“O ur General Assembly local arrangem en ts coordinator, D. M artin Butler, came on our staff July 1 and has been active in working on the many details asso c ia te d w ith a m ajor convention such as ours.”
Contracts with the convention center and with many of the Ind ianapo lis hotels/m otels have been signed. The program and exhibit committees are currently working on the public services and the design of the exhibit hall.
Once again in 1989, commer- ical exhibitors will be invited to participate in the display if their products/services are not in direct conflict with NPH or the educational institutions of the d e n o m in a tio n . The current schedule calls for commercial exhibit information to be ready for distribution in early October.
The Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Bureau is working with the church to coordinate housing for the assembly and conven tions. Information related to housing will be sent to delegates in mid-October and a special insert will be contained in the Herald o f Holiness around the first of the year. Nazarenes are encouraged to wait for the official housing form before making housing plans.
To receive special housing rates, w hich have been negotiated with the hotels/motels, it is essential tha t the appropriate form be completed and mailed directly to the Housing Bureau. Please do not contact the hotels directly or the Housing Bureau by phone. □

The Upstate N ew York district assem bly celebrated “A Decade of Church Planting." W ith a renewed emphasis 10 years ago, 15 churches have been organized and 5 church-type missions are in place. Thirteen percent of the morning worship attendance and 9% of the district finance are in these new works. District m em bership showed a 3 .7 % increase during the past year and a decadal growth of 22% . Three churches were organized in 1987. Pictured are General Superintendent Raymond W. “The Preacher”
The following letter was received by the Pensions office recently in appreciation for the m edallion tha t is provided by the Board of Pensions and Benefits USA for the gravesites o f N azarene m inisters on districts participating in the Pensions and Benefits Fund.
Dear General Church:Thank you. M y five children and I want
to say “Thank you” gratefully for designing a plaque to identify a minister as a minister on his monument. For more than 25 years my husband pastored a Church o f the Nazarene. How it thrilled him to be called “Preacher.” He was known by the community as “the Preacher.” A lady once said to me, “When they say P reach er’ I never have to ask,‘Who?”’ For 25 years and in fiv e different communities he was “the Preacher," working, witnessing, telling o f our wonderful God. As we would leave a cemetery after a funeral service he always said, “Don’t bury me with a fla t stone. Get me one that identifies that here is a man who has a great God—let me witness o f Him until eternity.”
His monument is at a cross corner in the cemetery. It is our prayer that each one who goes by thinks o f our wonderful Savior who loved us and gave His life for us.
This is bu t one o f the m any deeply appreciated services provided by your support o f the Pensions and Benefits Fund whereby you “ h o n o r the t ru s t” by “ serving those w ho serve.”

M orality in M edia's Evelyn D ukovic calls the preview "one o f the m ost unpleasant experiences I've ever had.” Dukovic, executive vice president o f the New York-based ministry, says. "I consider this film blasphemy.”
Universal Studios, in an effort to defuse criticism o f the soon- to-be-released M artin Scorsese (skor-SAY-zee) film , held a special screening for a group o f religious leaders in New York City July 12. New York's Episcopal Bishop. Rev. Paul Moore, called the m ovie "artistically excellent and theologically sound.” Rev. W illiam Fore, head o f com m unications for the N ational Council o f C hurches, called the film "co n s is ten t w ith an im p o rtan t stream o f C hristian theology” and added, “1 th ink it’s a sham e tha t som e C hristians appear to be so unsure o f their faith tha t they can 't stand the thought o f people seeing som ething different.” Rev. R obert L. M addox, executive d irector o f A m ericans U nited for Separation o f C hurch and State, adm itted tha t part o f the film "was on pretty shaky ground theologically” bu t said "the overall im pact was powerful on me.”
Dukovic, w ho attended the private screening w ith a colleague from M orality in M edia, disagrees w ith th a t evaluation o f the film . "They m ust have been in a different theater,” says Dukovic. "I can ’t explain that. I have m y opinion, tha t som e people w ant so m uch to be in the m ainstream that they'll look at technical things instead o f content.”
T he scene in the m ovie tha t is being talked about m ost is a dream the C hrist character has while on the Cross, in w hich he has sex w ith M ary M agdalene and has children by sisters M ary and M artha. D ukovic affirm ed tha t the film does show C hrist m aking love w ith M ary M agdalene, bu t adds. "T he rest o f it is ju s t as bad as the dream sequence, as far as the portrayal o f C hrist is concerned. T he sex in this thing pales beside the u tter blasphem y o f it.”
Scorsese, who was raised a C atholic and studied for the priesthood, has said tha t he believes The Last Tem ptation o f C hrist will be a faith-affirm ing film . But after viewing the film , w hich was no t in its final form, D ukovic said, “There is no spiritual im pact. T he film is ju s t blasphemy.”
T he film d istorts the historical figure o f C hrist, says Dukovic. and portrays H im as “a weak, fearful, indecisive person. He was wimpy: Judas was the strong person. It's a total d istortion of C hrist."— E P News Service

GENERALSUPERINTENDENT STRICKLAND DIES DURING EMERGENCY SURGERY
Funeral services for G eneral Superintendent Charles Henry Strickland, 71, were held August 13 at O la the , K ans., C ollege Church. He died around 4 p m . August 9, at a Kansas City hospital while undergoing surgery to treat an aneurysm on one o f the blood vessels to his heart. He had been taken into surgery earlier in the day after suffering from chest pains at his home.
He is the first general superintendent o f the denom ination to die while in office since Orval J. Nease passed away November 7, 1950.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie; four sons: Charles, Robert, Dudley, and Douglas; and eight grandchildren.
“The passing of our colleague, Dr. Charles H. Strickland, brings a sense of deep loss to those of us who served w ith h im on the Board o f G eneral S u perin ten dents," said board chairm an Eugene L. Stowe. “His contribution to the work o f our church worldwide in these 16 years o f his superintendency has been m onumental. Heaven is enriched by his homecom ing and the Church of the Nazarene will always remember him as a devoted servant o f G od and a cham pion of Christian holiness."
An endow m ent fund for m inisterial training at Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs has been established as a m em orial to the late general superintendent. D onations to the fund may be sent to G eneral Treasurer Norman O. Miller at 6401 The Paseo, Kansas City, MO 64131.

Strickland was first elected to the Board o f G eneral Superintendents in 1972. He came to the post after having served as the founding president o f Nazarene B ib le C o lle g e in C o lo ra d o Springs, which opened in 1967. Prior to this, he was superintend e n t o f th e N a z a re n e w ork am ong the Europeans in South Africa from 1948 to 1965 and earlier served as superintendent o f the Florida District. He also pastored churches in G eorgia and Texas.
Ordained in 1941, his formal preparation was at Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville. He received the doctor o f divinity degree in 1957 from Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, 111. He authored the book Africa Adventure and num erous articles for church periodicals.
Strickland had planned to retire from the Board of General S u p e rin te n d e n ts a t th e 1989 G eneral Assem bly in Ind ianapolis.

Superintendents from six districts in the United States joined with church planters, headquarters stafT, and others recently in Kansas City for the taping of a sem inar on telem arketing that has been used to plant more than 1,000 churches.
Theological education has complemented evangelism throughout the 80-year history of the Church of the Nazarene. They are the wings that enable us to soar in fulfililng the Great Commission.
October 9, 1988, is Nazarene Bible College annual offering Sunday. Pastors and congregations will have an opportunity to make a generous investment in the future ministries and ministers of the church. One hundred percent participation will please the Lord and help meet financial needs of this significant ministerial training center.

Norman W han, developer of the p rog ram an d d ire c to r o f C h u rch P la n tin g for F riends Church, Southwest Yearly Meeting, conducted the seminar. It will be used to prom ote the Nazarene version o f the m aterials, which have been developed by W han and his associates to plant churches using the telephone. In the past 18 months it has been u se d to b r in g 1 5 0 ,0 0 0 u n churched people into a place of worship.
The basic program uses individuals to m ake 20,000 phone calls in a specific com m unity. This usually results in the establishm ent of a contact list o f 2,000 or more. Adherence to the program usually results in an attendance o f about 200 at the first service.
The eight-week telemarketing p ro g ra m in c lu d e s c o n ta c ts through letters, newsletters, and an additional phone call prior to the opening service. The p ro gram can also be used to help an existing church to grow. It has

been used by a num ber o f Nazarene churches and by some 94 different religious groups to date.
The program includes a com prehensive notebook that comes complete with a voice track that tells the phone callers exactly what to say. It also provides extensive tips, model letters, invitations, etc., that may be used in follow-up to those con tac ted . The program ’s follow-up tools would also be useful to anyone who is desirous o f im proving com m unication lines with visitors.
Todd Barnes, a church planter from Apple Valley. Minn., who is using the program, shared with those attending the sem inar how he was able to lead a lady to Christ during a phone call last week.
Jim Bearden, South C arolina district superintendent, said the program has been used on his district where only 6,000 calls w ere m ade . It re s u lte d in a church that is now running 65 in average attendance. He added that a doctor and his wife had just been saved in the previous Sunday’s service.
“ 'T he Phone’s for You!' is a God-given tool that I believe can be used to help us develop many o f the 730 churches we want to establish in the 1989 ‘Year o f Church Planting,” ’ said Michael Estep, Church Extension Ministries director. Church Extension Ministries is responsible for development o f the Nazarene version of the program.
