Notes from Supervisor Runion’s Offi ceAugust has turned out to be a pretty busy month for various Guilderland projects, and I’d like to take this opportunity to share some information about them with you.
I am pleased to report that work has commenced on the project at the former McKownville Reservoir location. Since there has been some lack of clarity about what this project involves and what it will accomplish, I want to clarify the matter.
Th e project has two elements. Th e fi rst is a drainage improvement project that has been designed to reduce the frequency and the severity of the fl ooding that periodically occurs along Western Avenue in front of Stuyvesant Plaza. Th is will be accomplished by expanding the water holding capacity of the former reservoir, by directing more water into the reservoir, and by allowing for the more effi cient movement of that water under Western Avenue and out into the Krum Kill, its natural outlet. Th e project will not eliminate fl ooding totally, as such an eff ort would be a complex project involving all of the municipalities in the Krum Kill watershed and costing millions of dollars. It has, however, been
designed by our engineering fi rm and reviewed by the New York State Department of Transportation to meaningfully improve the situation. Th e second element of the project is to create a neighborhood-scale pocket park complete with a walking trail around the former reservoir.
We have worked hard to bring this project along without a major outlay of Town funds, and have been very successful in that eff ort. Our fi nancial partners in this project include: Assemblyman Jack McEneny; the New York State Department of Transportation; and Stuyvesant Plaza. On behalf of our residents, I would like to express our gratitude for their support of this important work. Getting this project designed and funded with the assistance of fi nancial partners was a lengthy eff ort, and I would like to acknowledge the work of the McKownville Improvement Association in advocating for and providing input on the project as it evolved.
We have been hearing recently from residents in the area of Doctor Shaw Road about concerns over the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. In response, the Town Board this month approved the retention of an engineering fi rm to evaluate current conditions and to make recommendations for traffi c calming and other improvements that will promote safety in this growing area. Th eir recommendations will assist us in approaching the tasks of designing specifi c improvements and addressing the issue of funding construction costs.
August also saw the installation of new playground equipment at two of the Town’s neighborhood parks on Ronald Place and Lone Pine Road. Th ese pocket parks are an important component of Guilderland’s parks and recreation program, and maintaining and enhancing the resources available at these locations has become increasingly important as people seek recreational opportunities closer to home. We will continue our current program to upgrade and replace equipment in these parks as a part of our 2010 budget.
During July, the Town Board appointed a committee to conduct a thorough review of Guilderland’s zoning laws to insure that they are current, complete, and that they conform to the community goals established in Guilderland’s Comprehensive Plan. Th e committee membership consists of people from a variety of professional backgrounds and from all areas of the Town. Th e fi rst meeting of the group was held in August, and it will continue its work throughout the fall to make certain that all aspects of the current law are considered, and that there are opportunities for both residents and members of the business community to provide input on this important subject. All meetings are open to the public, and information is available on the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org.
As summer winds down and the school year begins, I’d like to remind our residents to be careful and considerate on the roads as the fl ow of traffi c changes to its fall pattern. I also invite all our residents to enjoy the beauty of our Town parks as the seasons begin to change. We also welcome local golfers to enjoy a few pleasant cooler-weather rounds at Guilderland’s own Western Turnpike Golf Course, where residents can enjoy preferred greens fee rates and a well-maintained and friendly golfi ng facility.
Finally, I would encourage residents to remember that our second Household Hazardous Waste Day program will be held at the Town Highway Garage on French’s Mill Road from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 19. Th is is a great opportunity to clear out all kinds of potentially hazardous materials from your home and make certain that they are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner. In order to participate, residents must present a coupon, which is available at either the Town Clerk’s offi ce or at the Guilderland Transfer Station. Th ere is no charge to residents for this service, which is funded in part through a grant from the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation. A complete list of materials that can be accepted for disposal can be found on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org .
We appreciate the folks at Our Towne Guilderland providing us with the opportunity to keep in touch with our residents. Please contact my offi ce at Town Hall (356-1980) if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see in this report.

One of the biggest concerns from parents during the back-to-school season is bullying. Some 160,000 kids skip school everyday because they fear of being attacked or ridiculed by bullies. The good news is that these disturbing statistics can be limited with the proper education.
As an person that has worked with hundreds of children on anti-bullying strategies, I have found that the most important skill a child should have when dealing with bullies is confi dence. No matter what you teach a child, it will not be effective without the confi dence to put the lessons into action. Children that fall victim to bullies usually are targets because they lack the confi dence to stand up for themselves. Therefore, it is very important that you begin instilling confi dence within your child if you want him or her to effectively handle bullying.
Here are a few tips on how you can build confi dence within your child:
Make sure that you are a good listener when talking with your child. Try not to ignore your child’s feelings. Children are more confi dent when they feel like they are being heard. If you, as a parent, take the time to listen to your child then he or she will have more confi dence to speak their mind when dealing with bullies.
Pay attention to your child’s moods. If your child is grumpy or agitated, then most-likely he or she can act the same way around other children. That can increase the chance of your child falling victim to unnecessary arguments and fi ghts with others. Factors that can affect your child’s mood include:
o Lack of proper sleep each night. Children need at least 8 hours of total sleep per night. If they are not getting the proper amount of rest, then it can affect their mood the next day.o Insuffi cient diet. Certain foods affect children’s moods including foods that are high in sugar, caffeine or fat. Keep your child’s diet balanced with plenty of fruits and vegetables.o Lack of exercise. Children that do not exercise regularly tend to have a lower level of energy which will affect his or her mood. This can also lead to obesity which makes your child more prone to bullying.
Part 2 of this article will be in the next edition of Our Towne

CHIROPRACTICS FOR SENIORSRESEARCH SHOWS WIDE USAGE AND SATISFACTION
BY DR. JENNIFER L. NOONAN, SPINAL WELLNESS CENTER
My heart is greatly saddened watching seniors around the country having to worry, fight and hope not to be disregarded and rationed out of healthcare and hence the quality of life they so richly deserve. I care about each of mypatients, but there is a special place at the Spinal Wellness Center for all of our seniors. So here is a ray of hope for those who may be suffering from arthritis-related pain or immobility. CHIROPRACTIC IS A PROVEN SAFE AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT FOR YOUR PAIN AND STIFFNESS.
A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has found thatChiropractic was not only the most sought after form of alternative treatmentfor patients with rheumatoid, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, but it was alsoamong those found to be most helpful for these conditions. 73% of patientsstudied found chiropractic care to be helpful, placing chiropractic second behind spiritual healing. The American Geriatrics Society listed chiropracticcare among the non-pharmacologic strategies for pain management, whichcarries few, if any adverse effects. (Whereas anti-inflammatories kill tens of thousands annually.) In fact, the patients who received chiropractic care had fewer hospitalizations and used fewer medications than patients receiving medical care only! HOMEBUYERS, DON’T MISS YOUR $8,000TAX CREDIT AND NY TAX INCENTIVES!
The American Recovery and Reinvestment act of 2009 provides
a tax credit of up to $8,000 for first time home buyers. To be
fully eligible for this program you can’t have owned a home
in the past three years and must earn less then $75,000 a year
as a single individual or $150,000 as a married couple filing
jointly. In addition, the home must be used as the purchaser’s
primary residence. While these are the main requirements,
there are other restrictions, so it is important to contact your
tax professional about your specific situation.
However, time is running out. To be eligible for this program
you must close on your new home by November 30, 2009.
Capital region real estate transactions are typically running in
the 45-60 day range to close. Therefore, to safely avoid missing
the deadline, a homebuyer will generally have to be under
contract to purchase a home by mid October of 2009. So time
is quickly running out.
As an additional incentive to purchase a home, New York has
recently announced a Mortgage Credit Certificate Program or
MCC. Under this program eligible first time home purchasers
receive up 20% of their mortgage interest payments as a tax
credit on their federal tax returns. In general, a typical $200,000
mortgage at 5.5% would result in a savings of $2,186 a year. The
beauty of this program, unlike the $8,000 credit, is it applies to
the life of the loan with savings realized every year. Obviously,
the savings in the later years of the program will be less as the
balance of the loan is paid down and interest payments are
reduced. The loan can not be a SONYMA mortgage but applies
to most other FHA, VA, convention, and fixed rate loans.
The tax incentives, combined with low interest rates, and
motivated sellers have proven to be a winning combination for
many local buyers. If you have ever considered purchasing a
home now is the time. If you wait, you risk losing some of
the best buyer incentives that may ever exist. If you would like
additional information on these programs please call our free
24 recorded hot line at 1-800-448-7016 Ext 1171.

Q. What is Athos Restaurant?A. We are the only Classic Greek Restaurant in the Albany area.
Q. What year did your business open?A. August 2008
Q. Where are you located?A. 1814 Western Ave Albany 12203
Q. Why did you get into the business? A. The concept of The Athos Restaurant was created to bring the Greek Experience of Philoxenia” (Greek hospitality) to the Albany area. Manyhave experienced Greek hospitality while visiting Greece or being invited intoa Greek home. Greek life is centered around the table, eating and drinking inthe presence of family and friends. This allows individuals to share experiences, celebrate joys, sweeten sorrows, and ease the struggles of life.
Q. How many years have you been in the restaurant business? A. The owners of Athos have a long tradition in the restaurant business. The Danes and Sokaris families have run restaurants in the Albany areasince 1925. Some of their restaurants include the Boston Cafeteria andCandy Kitchen, the Economy Lunch, the View Restaurant, and the GatewayDiner. Award winning Chef Harry has forty years of international cookingexperience. His decisions to leave his Zagat rated restaurant, Ithaka, in NYCand relocate to Albany, was the catalyst to creating the Athos restaurant.
Q. What is Classic Greek Cuisine?A. Many think of it as the Mediterranean diet. This a healthy diet composedof grilled fresh fish, meats, and vegetables. Many of our dishes are vegetarian. This is the cuisine found on the Aegean islands. The mountainous areas ofGreece are known for Youvetsi clay pot cookery, and hearty sauces withmeat or fish. The islands of the Ionian feature pasta dishes with flavorfulsauces. Greek cuisine is diverse in its’ ingredients, seasoning and flavors. This is a result of Middle Eastern, Italian and French influences. Meze aresmall plates of appetizers that are meant to be shared. Greek deserts are
prepared with nuts, honey and cinnamon, whether layered in filo dough tomake baklava or on top of yogurt. All of our food is prepared on the premisefrom the freshest ingredients.
Q. Do you have many regular customers? A. Yes, because of our heart healthy cuisine, we have many physicians, especially cardiologists, at our restaurant regularly. Many of the families inthe neighborhood come because of our family friendly atmosphere. Youngpeople come to enjoy Greek wines and meze in our relaxed bar.
Q. Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for?A. The whole grilled fish including bronsini, red snapper, and darato. Theseare grilled whole and filleted tableside and served with seasonal greens. Many of our patrons also enjoy classic Greek dishes such as Greek salad,Mousaka, Souvlaki, and Baklava.
Q. What hours are you open? A. Monday – Saturday 4pm- closing, Sunday 3pm - closing
Q. What do you love most about the business? A. Meeting new people and exposing them to the Greek hospitality. Manyin the capital district have never been to a Greek restaurant. We derive greatjoy in having them enter our restaurant, enjoy our Greek cuisine, and leaveas our friends. This is Philoxenia.
Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. Athos is a locally owned restaurant, with a cuisine that is unique to thearea. Our challenge is to educate people about Greek cuisine. Once theyhave come to Athos, we know they will return.
Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. We are delighted to be located in Guilderland. Our neighbors have been very supportive and loyal. We in turn pledge that we will continue toprovide the finest food, served in a relaxed atmosphere, by attentive andfriendly staff.

Roman Jewels has been a full service jeweler for over 16years in the city of Albany.
We specialize in 18k Italian gold jewelry that we directlyimport from Italy ourselves.
About 3 years ago, when the gold market started to spike, jewelry sales started to decline. We needed to dosomething to generate business, so we started advertisingthat WE BUY GOLD. It has been a true success. Having knowledge of all types of jewelry and also bringing in afull time coin expert, has given us an edge to the “buying”market. Recently, we’ve started buying antiques and collectibles and have a booth inside the Coxsackie Antique Center.
Never ever put your gold or valuables in an envelope and ship them out. National news channels have uncoveredthe scams and how you get so much less money thanbringing it to your local jeweler. You also can’t trust the “here today, gone tomorrow” buyers that rent out hotel rooms. Some of us locals have sent out spies and they payless than half of what we pay. We try to work on volume so that we can offer the best price in town. We evaluate each item by the piece. We don’t just melt every piece of beautiful or antique jewelry. It’s worth more than just scrap to us. Before you bring your gold anywhere else, at least let us evaluate it and give you a price at no cost.
We are open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to5:00 p.m. and staying open until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays. We also make house calls on Sundays by appointment outside the city of Albany.
Conveniently located at 1190 Western Avenue, across from The University at Albany.

Guilderhaven, inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit that helps the animal community. We provide food, financial assistance, and transportation for seniors and their beloved companion animals. Along with Noah's Kingdom, Robin's Nest, the Cat Care Coalition, and SCRUFF (Spaying Capital Region Unowned Feral Felines), we have created low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinics. We have spoken to school groups and youth organizations, produced an educational coloring booklet, and placed animals from private homes and from the Brennan Humane Society shelter. In addition, we received an award from the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce honoring our work. The past two years were great for Guilderhaven, inc. We facilitated the spay/neuter of over 1700 cats (includes feral, and owned) in 2008. In addition, we were able to help with many vet bills for seniors, disabled veterans, and many other NY residents. We visited grade schools and brought along Teri Conroy and her therapy dog Jane to teach kids the basics of caring for pets. This year we continue with our spay/neuter efforts. In February and March of 2009 we paid for the spay/neuter of the animals at the Brennan Shelter (Gloversville, NY) in order to help them reduce their adoption fees. As a result of these "promotions" the Brennan Shelter were able to adopt over 20 dogs in February and over 20 dogs and 20 cats in March of 2009 (compared to their 6-8 adoptions from March 2008)! In addition, we helped start a low cost spay/neuter for dogs in conjunction with the Cat Care Coalition Rotterdam Vet and Central Vet in May/June of this year. To date, 25 dogs have been spayed/neutered through this clinic. We have come a long way and would not be able to continue this work without the constant support of our wonderful community and our local businesses! Thank you!

Automobile accidents happen and your safety should be the top
priority for both you and the repair facility. Let’s face it, an
accident could occur again and you want to remain safe if it does.
If a tree fell through the roof of your house would you only fix the
cosmetic damage or begin with the main structure? Collision repair is
the same principle.
The first thing to understand is the ever-changing repair methods of all
makes and models. Every few years or sooner a vehicle manufacturer
changes their use of metals, airbags, braking systems or use of
electronics in one or all of these categories. This leads to the question
who is really qualified to fix my vehicle in the event of an accident?
The greatest fallacy is to take it to the dealer. Although they are used
in warranty type service issues, collision repair is a whole different ball
game. Most dealers spend their money in the “Front End” or sales
department of their stores and quite often the collision center or the
“Back End” of the store suffers. Our independent collision center is
just that, independent to nothing BUT collision; our only interest is
to repair your vehicle.
Being we fix so many makes and models we are challenged with
understanding all repair methods for a vast variety of vehicles. Dealers
may only concentrate on their own make if any. All of our technicians
are welding certified and we are the ONLY I-CAR Gold Certified
shop in the capital district. What that means for you is the best factory
repair trained technicians work under our roof. Check out more of
what I-CAR means to you on our website www.colescollision.com.
We are also Better Business Bureau members which can also be found
on the website as well.
Hail has been at the top of the list the past two years and it may
become more prominent every year or go away forever as weather
patterns change in our ever-changing world. We offer paintless dent
repair as well as conventional or traditional methods to take the
“dings” out of your panels. We have literally fixed over $1 million
worth of hail damage between last year and this summer, so you could
say we are professionals at all phases of this type of repair as well.
Cole’s Collision Center offers all types of Auto Body collision and
painting services and all come with a lifetime guarantee on the repair
as well as the finish.
What if my insurer says Cole’s is not on their “list”? As a consumer
By Law you are entitled to your own shop of choice. While we are a
Direct Repair Shop for about 10 different Companies, we accept and
repair any vehicle from ALL insurance companies. We always work
through the criteria of all companies so we can provide our customers
with the best, safest,
and fastest repair.

Stick To The Plan

These studies have found that the survival wiring in your brain, which makes you desire reward and avoid risk or pain, has stronger grounding than your logical wiring. Q AQ. What year did your business start?A. I started my own business at Sunday Stables in the late 1970’s.
We are now located at the corner of Rte. 158 and County Line Rd,
Guilderland, close to the Rotterdam border.
Q. How and why did you get into the business?A. When I was 10 years
old I went to My Play
Stable in Guilderland with
a girlfriend to try riding.
I loved it, and haven’t
stopped working with
horses since then. I trained
with Russell Stewart at
My Play Stable and had
some great experiences
showing hunters across
the northeast. One of my
fondest experiences was a
show at Madison Square
Garden where I placed
fi rst with my hunter Little
Fiddle.
Q. Do you have many regular customers?A. Yes, we have many regular customers, of all age groups and ability
levels. Th ey continue with us because they have great riding lessons on
nice horses and everyone is friendly.
Q. Are you known for anything special?A. We ride/train English Hunt Seat, for equitation and hunters.
Q. What hours are you open?A. We are open seven days a week for boarders. Lessons are made by
appointment on days and weekday evenings.
Q. Do you work with any local teams or associations?A. Yes, the SUNY Albany Equestrian Team rides/trains for their
intercollegiate competitions, and their club team also rides with us.
Locally we are members of the Tri-county Riding Association and the
Capital District Hunter Jumper Association. We also are members of
the USEF, our national show governing board and the AHJF.
Q. What do you love most about the business?A. Along with the horses, which have never ceased to be a source of
enjoyment, I enjoy and appreciate seeing riders’ skills improve along
with their understanding and respect for horsemanship.
Q. What do you want the community to know about you?A. First, we have reliable
horses and knowledgeable
instructors. Along with my
forty years of experience we
have two other teachers.
Sandy Croote has ridden,
shown and worked with
me for twenty years. Sandy
owns her own farm where
she raises, trains and shows
her champion horses at the
World National/Hall of
Fame level, has worked with John Lyons, and is a recognized, carded
judge. We have also been very lucky to add Katelin McLaughlin
to our staff . Katelin is a graduate of Delaware College where she
earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Equine Studies. She was captain of
the intercollegiate team, competing in the World Equestrian Cup
Rider Competition in dressage, stadium jumping, cross-country
and hunt seat and at the American National Riding Commission
Competition. Katelin has also received her Instructor Certifi cation
from the British Horse Society.
Second, we encourage friendship and camaraderie among our riders,
whether young or old. Our summer camp program brings children
of similar ages and abilities together for a week of fun, riding and
learning. We have many adults who begin with a lifelong wish to
ride, with the bonus of staying fi t. Not everyone will move on to
competitive showing with their mount. However, they will all have
the pleasure of mastering skills and knowing the pleasure of working
with and caring for horses.
