"THE MEDIEVAL WALLED TOWNS" YOUGHAL CELEBRATES HISTORY

8th ANNUAL CONFERENCE Mall Arts Centre, Youghal, 24- 26 September 2010Every year the conference’s organising committee has only oneproblem: with so much history in Youghal which topic to choose! The following are some of the high-lights of what promises to bea fascinating and entertaining week-end: Catryn Power, Margaret Gowen, Katherine Desmond and DanNoonan, all well-known Youghal archaeologists, will talk aboutthe medieval archaeology of their home town as seen in itsstreetscapes, town walls, monuments and buildings. Special attention will be given to St Mary’s Collegiate church:David Kelly will discuss its architecture while Máire Geaney willtake a special look at the oak roof: ‘an Irish gem with a Frenchconnection.’ Prof Tadhg O’Keeffe of University College Dublinexamines the specific significance of town gates, John Bradleyfrom NUI Maynooth puts Youghal into the context of Irishmedieval walled towns, Gerard Crotty discusses the Armorial her-itage, while Dr Colmán Ó Clabaigh, of Glenstal Abbey, looks at‘Monks, Medicine and Malpractice- the Benedictine Hospital inmedieval Youghal. The fact that this conference is still takingplace even in these difficult financial times may well be a miracle, but in medieval times miracles happened regularly in Youghal, allthanks to the statue of ‘Our Lady of Graces’, the topic of DrDagmar Ó Riain-Raedel’s talk. There will be an evening of stories, legends and music on Friday, a guided Walking tour of the townwith entertainment on Sunday: Something for everyone in theaudience! For details, check: www.youghalcelebrateshistory.com Telephone and email: 024 81010 / [email protected]

The proof that it is never too late to learn something new is verymuch in evidence at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre where dozens ofadults are taking the plunge to learn how to swim. The leisure centre has received a fantastic response to its decisionto organise adult swimming lessons on Tuesday and Thursdaynights and to introduce a ladies only class on Wednesday morn-ings.“The response from adults who have decided to challenge them-selves by learning how to swim and to conquer their fear of waterhas exceeded our expectations,” explained Tracy Kenneally,Operations Manager at the centre.“Being able to swim is a valuable life skill and a lot of parents areactually following in the footsteps of their children who areenrolled or who have learned how to swim at the Aura SwimAcademy,” she added. The half hour classes cater for absolute beginners, intermediateswimmers and advanced swimmers. Each class accommodates upto twelve adults enabling Aura’s qualified swim instructors to pro-vide one-to-one attention in a fun environment.“Our first step is to determine people’s motivation for learning howto swim and to assess their ability. Some people are completenovices and others simply want to improve existing skills to get themost out of holidays or to gain a competitive edge in triathlons,”Tracy explained.“We work with beginners to improve their confidence in the waterand have most of them swimming by week eight. The rate of pro-gression from week to week is huge and people get a real kick outof achieving one goal and moving on to the next,” she continued. The intermediate adult swimming classes focus on improving frontcrawl and breaststroke over distance while the advanced classesprovide a personal training, endurance workout for serious swim-mers and tri-athletes with an emphasis on achieving goals. The half hour classes take place at 8 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Tuesdayand Thursday evenings. The ladies only classes take place at 9.15a.m. on Wednesdays and have become especially popular withmums after the school run. Each course runs for ten weeks andcosts €85. Adults seeking more information about the classes or who wish todiscuss their reasons and motivations for learning how to swim arewelcome to visit Aura Youghal Leisure Centre at Claycastle to talkto an instructor or to telephone the centre at 024 91614 for book-ings and further information.

The sight of a crane on the horizon was a common occurrence dur-ing the Celtic Tiger, but in these times of social flux and econom-ic crisis it is very rare indeed. It was hardly surprising then thatresidents and passersby in the Cork Hill and Maginer's Hill areasexpressed a tingle of excitement as the Bru na Si Cultural Centreengaged East Cork Crane Hire to position not one, but four PortoCabins in time for the new teaching season. The management of Brú na Sí believe that everyone who so wish-es, should have access to the traditional arts. Learning these disci-plines at a high level enriches the lives and character of students,as well as creating a sense of pride throughout the entire commu-nity. To facilitate the growing numbers at Brú na Sí extra teaching

space has been long identified. The current upgrading of facilitiesat Bru na Sí will provide space for over 10 different disciplines atany one time. It is hoped that this required space can become per-manent if resources become available. This relentless action on behalf of Comhaltas is as much aboutattitude as it is about the set of programmes, practices and proce-dures that together form the Brú na Sí plan for helping studentsattending the Centre to behave well learn well and perform well.Notwithstanding the complex nature of community development,we at Brú na Sí continue to meet the challenges. Our primary chal-lenge is to keep enhancing the quality of the service we provide. In the current economic climate we also have to improve oureffectiveness, and in so doing reduce costs. New Season of Classes. Enrolment for a new season of classestakes place at Brú na Sí on Monday 13th from 7pm onwards.Intending pupils may also telephone 087 7934504.It is envisagedthat the branch will cater for four separate groups as well as a lim-ited number of beginners this season.Comhaltas rests on the double premise that "all children should

have the opportunity to learn traditional music and dance", andthat "learning at a high level also involves learning certain charac-ter traits and values". Brú na Sí at this time of year returns to beinga community of learners in which administrators, teachers, parentsand students learn how to improve at the work they do together sothat everyone succeeds their "personal best."

We all have to become more conscious of our energy consumptionif we are to meet the targets set by the Government. However, these efforts are also hugely beneficial to us in terms of cost sav-ings, increased comfort levels not to mention the increased eco-nomic & employment benefits. In this article, I would like to men-tion some of the simple measures that we can use to reduce ourenergy demand within the home - remember there are grants avail-able for some of these measures:Insulate your attic well & save up to 20% on your home heatingbill. You should consider increasing the depth of your attic insula-tion to 300mm.Consider improving the insulation of your external walls. Thiscan be done by externally applied insulation, dry-lining or blowncavity insulation.Service your boiler & save up to €120 per year on your heatingcosts. Remember that if you have to replace your boiler, you arenow obliged to replace it with a modern high-efficient condensertype boiler - if your existing boiler is more than 15 years old, acondenser boiler will probably be 25% more efficient & willreduce your oil bill dramatically! If you have improved your insulation, you may only need asmaller boiler. Remember that an over-sized boiler does not run atthe optimum efficiency. If you are replacing your boiler, ensurethat you have proper heating controls included such as heatingzones, thermostats and time control programmer.Ensure bedroom temperatures are no higher than 18 degreesCelsius & Living Rooms are no higher than 20 degrees Celsius.Turn down temperature by one degree & reduce heating costs by10%!Install a timer for your immersion heater & a temperature statfor your hot water cylinder. Consider replacing your cylinder witha factory-insulated model; otherwise ensure you have a correctlyfitted lagging jacket. If you have single glazing windows or double glazing that aremore than 10 - 15 years old, you should consider replacing themwith modern double glazing units which are far more efficient.Natural daylight helps heat your house & it costs nothing! Don'tobstruct daylight with furniture or net curtains. Paint your roomswith light colours - it better reflects the daylight.Cut out draughts & significantly save heating costs! Typicaloffenders would be draughty external doors & windows, underwindow boards, attic trap-doors, holes in ceilings for pipes & lightfittings, faulty letter-boxes, etc.Open fires waste money - up to 70% of the heat goes up thechimney! Consider installing a sealed solid fuel stove. Ensure your radiators are clear of curtains. Close curtainsovernight even in unoccupied rooms to conserve heat, but openthem in the mornings to achieve the solar gain from daylight. Keepdoors closed in unoccupied & unheated rooms.Change bulbs to energy-saving CFL's. They only use a fractionof the energy & last up to 10 times longer! Regularly clean yourlight fittings & bulbs. When making tea or coffee, boil only the amount of waterrequiredEvery time you open the oven door to check cooking, you lose20% of the accumulated heat!Only purchase A-Rated domestic appliances whenever possible! If you wish to discuss this or any other topic, please email me [email protected] .

So why not be partof raising the roof and raising money for TrócaireTrad for TRÓCAIRE will take what's truly unique, special and atthe heart of Irish culture-our music, song and dance to transformthe lives of some of the poorest and most vulnerable communitiesin the world.Issued by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, The living tradition.

2010 proved a landmark year for Youghal and its surrounding areaswhen it was ear-marked by Failte Ireland as a 'Family Friendly Hub'- a Failte Ireland family friendly holiday initiative. The initiative isset to expand over the coming months as the local steering commit-tee and Failte Ireland undertakes a major recruitment drive of newtourism activity providers, approved accommodation providers, along with restaurant and food providers to the programme. The aim of the project is to develop the region (Youghal, East Corkand West Waterford) as a family holiday resort, increase visitor num-bers and grow revenue. To date over 27 tourism operators in thearea are currently reaping the rewards of having signed up tobecome one of the programme participants. The initiative has pro-vided a wide range of free training in marketing and customer carefor all participants, produced a brochure, developed a web presence, conducted an advertising campaign, supported family friendly prod-uct development and funded beach management projects.Hilary Creedon of Failte Ireland outlined the progress to date on theinitiative: "The feedback to date from visitors to the initiative hasbeen extremely positive. A nominated industry steering groupdrives the initiative at a local level with the support of Failte Irelandand this is working extremely well. At this stage of 2010, we'reready to bring the project to the next stage of development.Following its first full year of operation, we plan to work closelywith operators to build on the quality of the family friendly experi-ence that is delivered in the area".This local steering committee is made up of tourism productproviders in the Youghal, East Cork and West Waterford region andis chaired by Sal Tivy of Perks Entertainment Centre. One of thefirst tasks this voluntary steering committee set about was organiz-ing a free family festival weekend from 16th - 18th July 2010 whichattracted in excess of 5,000 visitors to the area over the course of theweekend. "The festival exceeded all our wildest expectations", saidSal Tivy, of the steering committee. "On reflection however, Ibelieve the secret of our success was that all the fun events were freeand the simple, old fashioned ideas will always be enjoyed by kidsof any era," commented Sal.The area was chosen not only because of its +2,500 bed nights, butalso key to the decision process was that facilities are already inplace for the ideal family holiday - with two blue flag beaches, wateractivities along with the ability to offer families the facility to holi-day in any weather conditions. Another key factor was because ofits geographical location and touring base for families to visit themany attractions and activities in the wider East Cork and WestWaterford area. To become a partner on the programme tourism product providersmust sign up to the 'Family Friendly Charter' which outlines thebasic requirements to be considered a family friendly establishment. There is no cost incurred to prospective members, and members willgreatly benefit from attendance at a free day training course forFamily Friendly Service Delivery conducted by marketing and cus-tomer care professionals. This is a pre-requisite for at least onenominated member of staff. Members also benefit from inclusion inFáilte Ireland's communications campaign for the Family Friendlyinitiative (including printed material, direct Mail pieces, web, pub-licity etc).A quality control mechanism has been put in place byFailte Ireland where programme participants will be visited toensure the consistency of their family friendly offering and that allelements of the charters are being adhered to. If you are a tourism product provider in the Youghal, East Cork orWest Waterford region, keen and in a position to deliver a 'familyfriendly service', why not consider getting involved in this innova-tive and free initiative? U8, 10 & 12’s The last blitz of the summer took place in Killeaghon the 2nd of September. Both our U8’s & U10’s have improvedimmensely over the past few months & these blitz’s have provedto be a great success. Thank you to Dungourney also on the nightthat provided refreshments for the girls. The girls then finished up the season with a small party in the Clubhouse last Tuesday. Training for the U8’s & U10’s will recommence early next year. U15 League This league seems to be a challenging one, as mostof the girls play u14, U18 and Junior, there doesn’t seem to beenough time in the summer to get challenge games in and play theleague. So it was decided that the girls would use these games aschallenges with a view to do well in the Championship which isstarting with their first game against Kilbree Saturday 18th. Minor Camogie Youghal 3-3 Blarney 1-6 The U18’s playedtheir second league game at home which turned out to be a seriousbattle. Fierce determination from centre forward Roisin O’Keeffekept the ball in the Youghal half for most of the game. A fantastic goal from Alannah Finn in the first half sent the sideline jumping. It wasn’t long before Blarney answered with theirfirst point and from their on our back s had their work cut out forthem.Captain Niamh Quill showed her strength in mid field a positionthat she has filled with great ease. Amy Motherway took up the role of centre back showing her fan-tastic skill and power in the defense. At half time Youghal were down by a point and the girls knew itwas going to be a tougher second half against a very physicalBlarney . The team went out in the second half with the mindsetto win and they managed to stop Blarney from getting any scores. An unstoppable goal came from Leah Broderick and after anotherminute another goal came from one of our u14 players EmilyRoche.Points also came from Shannen Bulman Joyce, Roisin O’Keeffeand Niamh Quill to close the game out and send the girls into thenext round or the Minor County League The minors have had a very succesfull year in the County leaguebeating Castlelyons, Ahabullogue and Blarney and only margonal-ly beaten by St Vincents. The girls now progress to the semi final of the County league.Youghal 7-8 St Vincent ’s 2-5 The Juniors were in action again on Friday last in the Semi Finalof the County League, after a week of a break after the girlsbrought home the County Championship cup, the girls got rightback into training and were hoping coming into the game that theywould be on for the double. Youghal played St Vincent ’s in a challenge at the start of the yearand the teams were matched in strength and hurling, it showed onSaturday how far Youghal have come in their training as theystormed ahead from the moment the whistle blew. Siobhan Downing was the first to test the Vincent’s keeper with arocket of a shot from just outside the square; she racked up 4points in the first half. Roisin O’Keeffe was, as usual on fire the girl has awesome talentwhen on the ball and gave the Youghal supporters some greatviewing as she scored one of the best goals of the season of herhurl. Catherine O’Donoghue was on top form also catching greatball from mid field and running through the defense to score 2great goals. The score line read 6-7 to 1-1 at half time. The trainers were able to make key substitutions at half time giv-ing the younger girls a chance to show their worth and it was greatto give the likes of Shona Cunningham who scored 2 points abreak as she is also playing senior Championship with Imokilly. The play slowed down completely in the second half with Youghalonly scoring 1-1. Vincent’s tried to come back but the backs werestrong in defense and mid field were able to track back with a lotof running done. Youghal now go on to face Ballinascarty, who they defeated in the

Championship final by one point. The game is sure to be a greatone as Ballinascarthy will be trying to get one back on the girls. Fixture is yet to be confirmed. Congratulations to Dion O’Donoghue who won a County withClashmore on Saturday last, he is a cousin of players CatherineO’Donoghue and Kelly McCarthy who has helped the lads out intraining all year and has come to support the girls in every game, well done Dion the Youghal girls are very proud of you!! HEALTHY LIVING WITHDIABETES

By Christy Parker Youghal Foroige removed over 30 bags of rubbish when they con-ducted another clean-up of Youghal beach last weekend. In a thor-ough and efficient operation the youth organisation picked detritusfrom the Front Strand promenade to Redbarn across two, two-hourshifts across either side of midday. Two teams of approximately 20 each participated, comprised fromthe Nagle House based facility's music group, café and youth clubalongside adult Foroige volunteers, family and friends. The ratio, mind you was an unbalanced 3:1 towards females, which reflectsthe on-going requirement for more male participation in Foroige, especially at voluntary, supervisory level. According to youth worker Emer Power, the work proceeded"much more quickly and easily" than the club's previous initiativelast May when a trawl of the same area filled over 100 bags. "Wehad learned from the previous time and the weather was much bet-ter," she explains. In tents times Prominent amongst the debris were crisp bags, plastic bottles and,for some reason, shoes, but the area around the rifle range atClaycastle indicated best how the good summer had accommodat-ed the social habits of Youghal's less conscientious visitors (or per-haps even locals). Four tents, deck chairs sleeping bags and a hugeamount of beer cans and bottles" were discovered, according toEmer. "Some of the stuff still had shop tags on., It was like theyhad been bought especially for the occasion and then abandoned!"she reasoned. That's recession for you -can't afford to feed a tentwith beer in the attic at home! The cleaners also found a livelysmall frog, who we can assume was hopping mad at the habits ofhumans in his habitat. The voluntary effort has earned the Foroige centre a much-needed€500 from the Dept. of Environment, Heritage and LocalGovernment, to be distributed through Cork County Council. Itwill be divided between the centre's youth club, café and GardaYouth Diversion project.

Our Senior team played Carrigaline in Castle Road during theweek in what was our second last match of the Round RobinCompetition. Our final match will be against Eire Og on the17th/18th September. This game will also be the League Semi Final so there will beextra pressure to win it!!The match against Carrigaline saw some fine scoring for some ofour young up-coming players. Notably Roisin Culligan, KateMurphy and Elizabeth Kelly, when brought on scored some love-ly points. Of course our old reliables of Noelle Donovan andClaire Keohane didn't let us down and provided us with a fewscores into the net as well as over the bar during the game. Weeventually ran out the victors, a good place to be in with the mightof Eire Og to face in a couple of weeks. It is evident that with eachgame played that our girls are getting stronger and playing better. With this in mind training will continue and it is essential thateveryone attends these sessions as the pressure builds up for oursemi-final where we will meet either Ballinhassig/ValleyRovers/Newcestown.Panel for the Match: C Deane, Sandra Smiddy, Marie Smiddy,A.M Walsh, C Keohane, M O’Connor, S Beausang, NO’Donovan, Annie Walsh, B Stack, G Cunningham, AngelaWalsh, L O’Connor, S Landers, K Murphy, J O’Shea, E Kelly, DCunningham, K Walsh, Aislinn Walsh, Aideen Walsh, AoifeWalsh, Nora Walsh, R Culligan, A.R Sisk, N O Keeffe, Ella Ryan. Many thanks to everyone who helped with cakes, sandwiches, catering and tidy-upFor the East Cork final on Saturday 4th Sept.It was great to see Sheila Spillane back in her usual place on theside line after her recent absence!Good luck to our U14 team who play the County Semi final nextWednesday 8th at Castle Road, Mahon @ 6.30pm. Firsthome was Timmy Fitzgerald who timed in 2 birds in a few min-utes to record another good win, his third of the season. The fullresult was as follows:1st Timmy Fitzgerald, 2nd Timmy Fitzgerald, 3rd MichaelAherne, 4th Tony Hennessy, 5th Tony Hennessy. Our second last race of the season is fromMauchline in Scotlandthis weekend. Only a few birds are expected to go as most fanciersthink this race is a bridge too far.God be good to years gone bywhen my father and uncles and their fellow club mates includingmost of our present day fanciers thought nothing of sending mostof their birds to perth. It poses the question: Are birds worse todaythan yester year? Many thanks to our sponsors for their continued support.

By Michael TwomeyWhen 11-year-old keith Phelan was born under an emergency cae-sarean section, his parents, Tony and Mag had different reactionsto the arrival of their son. “Mag knew with a mother’s instinct thatsomething was wrong. Of course, I just thought he’s going to be afootballer.” Tony’s laughter at the memory belies the depth of painthe parents felt but another anecdote measures the seriousness ofKeith’s problems. “When they came to tell us about keith all thenurses scattered, except one. Your first thought is why me?” Tonyrecalled.Keith suffered bi-lateral Grade 4 Haemorrhage in premature birth,is quadriplegic (all four limbs are affected), suffers epilepsy andhas Cerebal Palsy (permanent disorders of the development ofmovement and posture, causing activity limitation). After watch-ing a TV3 feature on stem cell research and procedures being car-ried at the XCell-Center at Dusseldorf, Germany, Tony and Magmade inquiries. They were informed that Keith had a number ofoptions: surgical or lumber puncture (where cells are withdrawnfrom the hip bone marrow, good cells are retained in the lab wherethey regenerate and are reinserted by lumber puncture).Developments vary in degrees of success and over various timeperiods. Keith’s quality of life might improve slightly, immeasur-ably; it may take days, a month or maybe a year. The visit and pro-cedure takes five days to complete.

In an effort to change Keith’s life, Tony and Mag are setting up afund through the Allied Irish Bank. Tony explained. “We are hop-ing that people can donate directly, help us with our own fundrais-ing or hold events themselves.” Ger Flanagan Print in Youghal hasstarted the ball rolling by sponsoring cards for the Cork Mini-Marathon. It looks set to be a long and hard campaign and Tony isacutely aware that in the current economic climate, the challengeis tough with uncertain outcomes. “There are no guarantees thatthe treatment will work or what way Keith might progress. Hecan’t walk, he can’t sit up, he can’t dress himself, he can’t feedhimself, he can’t write; his future is a computer. Anything at allthat could change one of these things…Tony pauses as daring tosay the words escapes him but Mag speaks out…”We hope.”Keith’s parents will be heavily involved in the process andexpressed gratitude for any possible help that they might receive. There are positive’s in Keith’s life as well as his limitations, notleast amongst them his school life at Bun School Mhuire, Youghal.“We are delighted he is going to mainstream school,” said Tony.“He was really looking forward to going back as he said, ‘to meetall my friends’ and that does your heart good to see kids gatherround him. There’s no bad feeling.” There are times when Keith is

aware of what he can’t do and times to celebrate the simple things.“He gets really chuffed when he does something for himself likesitting up, then he’ll call us all down to see him,” Tony continued. Keith also goes for various therapies at Enable Ireland regularly. However, there is always a longing and when an opportunity aris-es like that in Dusseldorf, Tony and Mag are compelled to give ita try. “He would like to be able to do what his brother does. Hewatches us play football,” Tony remarked.Up and down the country on various playing fields parents’ eyeswell up with pride every time their child puts in a decent tackle, scores a goal or just crosses the white line. Love is blind and andtakes things for granted. We all want what’s best for our child andsome want even more. Tony and Mag learned the hard way thatyou don’t always get the best. Help them to help Keith so he canhelp himself. Life is all about negotiating stepping stones. Onesmall step for Keith could be one giant leap for his family. Todonate to the fund: Sort Code 05841087. The conclusion of another successful Ceolta Sí Seisiún seasonmarks the end of another Comhaltas year. During September thereis scarcely time to reflect on the uniqueness of this enormouslysuccessfully community driven cultural project. Not willing to reston its laurels, the Branch organisers have now moved on to prepar-ing the Annual Report and organising its core activities of classesin music and dance.Ceolta Sí which is the performing arm of Comhaltas has now com-pleted 20 years of entertainingboth locals and tourists to thisregion. Despite the predicteddecline in tourist numbers, thislocally produced show featuringthe best of local talent, has onceagain maintained its audiencenumbers throughout the season. Local tourist product providershave been magnanimous inexpressing their gratitude anddelighted that their guests couldexperience such a high standardand authentic evenings of Irishmusic and entertainment. So many of you have also toldus, that your visitors loved thewarm welcome they received at Brú na Sí.Many people really don't realise the value of the Traditional Artsand how far reaching they can go into the Community to make adifference. These arts are often the first introduction and Irishflavour that people in any part of the world experience. Our econ-omy may be bloodied but we are culturally unbowed. It is a pitythat the work of Youghal Comhaltas and the difference that itmakes often goes unnoticed locally, perhaps it is because of ourlocation or perhaps people aren't informed. To this end we now call on Youghal Town Council to ensure thatBrú na SÍ is not forgotten when local and National leaders are lob-bied during the National Day of Action- Campaign for the ArtsNew Season of Classes. The 2010 Talktalk National BCycling Championships took placeon Sunday with 5 laps of a mostlyflat, but nonetheless challengingcourse in Waterford, well known tolocal riders as “the sixteen” - aname that has stuck despite newroads making it in fact 13 miles inlength. The start near the top of a1km drag known as Daly’s Hillwhere the race also finished. With2 other lesser but significant dragsappearing three quarters of the wayaround the course; the 500m long5-6% climb from the Tramore roundabout almost immediately fol-lowed by the 1km long, 4-5% six cross roads climb (both usuallyinto the prevailing headwind), was a course for the real hard men.Eoin Whyte, Youghal’s only competitor, who was one of the bestJuniors in the country a few years ago made his move 5 miles fromthe finish of the 100k race. He quickly opened a gap of 18 secondswhich grew to 22 seconds with 5km to go. The finish line wasthree quarters of the way up Dalys hill where David O’Loughlintook the 2007 National Champs from an overconfident NicholasRoche who tried to solo to victory from 60 miles out ! Eoin was most unfortunate to face a strong headwind for the final3km and the lead began to whittle down to 14 seconds. Eoin gaveit everything in the final few kilometers only to be caught by thebunch at the 500m to go mark and finished exhausted in the bunchsprint finish. Congratulations to Eoin on a magnificient race and wishing himall the best in the Race Around Ireland which starts in Navan onTuesday night at 8p.m. Eoin is a member of Team Youghal whoare competing in Europe’s toughest endurance Cycle Race for thesecond year in a row. By Christy Parker Dial to Stop Drug Dealing The September meeting was addressedby a representative of the Southern Regional Drugs Task Force. Thespeaker informed the gathering of an upcoming re-launch of theregion's Dial to Stop Drug Dealing campaign in the Walter RaleighHotel on October 4th. The campaign has been on-going under a relatively low profile fortwo years but awareness is being heightened to coincide withYoughal's Drug Awareness week from 4th-8th of October. This willbe done concisely through promoting 1800 220 220, the anonymousDial to Stop Drugs number, across various organisation and commu-nity bodies. Poster, leaflets and media interviews will form a con-centrated effort to impress the number and its purpose on the con-sciousness of the community. This project is effectively an intelligence gathering initiative that hasproven -and continues to prove- successful in other areas of thecountry. Locally it is supported by the Regional Drugs Task Force,Youghal gardai and community networks. Freefone The meeting was told how 1800 220 220, which is a 24-hour, freefone number, is central to the Dial To Stop Drug Dealingproject. Through 1800 220 220, the general public are asked relayany information, or even suspicions, they may have on drug dealersor dealing, regardless of how miniscule the data may be seem. It isimperative that the campaign is recognised as targeting drug dealersas against drugs, a difference that may otherwise be regarded ascriminals rather than their victims. The essence of intelligence gathering is that even the most innocu-ous piece of information can assume major importance when placedalongside other data in the bigger picture. "We're talking about firstor second hand information -it may be a name, a car registration, aphotograph of suspicious activity- anything," the meeting was told. Confidential The service is "extremely confidential" and based out-side the State. It is managed by an external agency comprised oftrained operators sensitive to the issue, not least from a caller's per-spective. This agency gathers the information and in due coursepasses it back into the country to the Garda National Drugs Unit inDublin. The intelligence is then formulated into a coherent structureand siphoned back to the gardai in the local community fromwhence it came and possibly even forming a case for prosecution onits own. Most importantly, callers to 1800 220 220 are neither identified norasked for their identity, though they can provide it voluntarily if theywish. In keeping with the essence of confidentiality, phone numbersare not sought or traced. EmpoweringSeptember's meeting heard that project is further seen as empower-ing the community to use its own strength within to cleanse itself ofthe blight of drug dealing and associated nightmares. "You can feelvery helpless watching a friend or family member being destroyedby drugs, but this offers a way to strike back for them," said thespeaker. The scheme's success to date also reflects a 'safety in num-bers' consensus, whereby the input from individuals is assimilatedinto that acquired from a variety of sources. The Dial Top Stop Dealing campaign originated as a local initiativein Blanchardstown in 2006. In September 2007, Phase One waslaunched, adding Tallaght, Co Kildare (Celbridge, Naas, Athy andNewbridge), Dublin North East area (including Coolock,Donaghmede, Kilbarrack, Clarehall, Clonshaugh and Howth) andDublin's North Inner City. Phase two came a year later to bring CorkCity & county (Macroom, Midleton, Skibereen, Mallow andYoughal), Kerry (Tralee), Limerick, Dublin North, South East(Waterford, Wexford and Carlow) into the scheme. Further on,Phase Three brought in Dunlaoghaire/Rathdown, Bray, Wicklow(East Coast), Midlands, Finglas/CabraCalls increasing To date, Phase Two regions have generated over1,100 calls. Dissecting this statistic shows that from September 2008to July 2009, there were 113 calls from Cork city and county, 28calls from Kerry, 45 from Limerick, 19 from North Dublin and 94from the South east. Those 141 calls to 1800 220 220 from theCork/Kerry region were outnumbered between August 09 to Augustas 178 calls were made, mostly from rural areas.

In terms of result, the meeting was told that "intelligence gatheringtakes time" but that the outcome over the past two years has led to"five Section 10 seizures and numerous Section 3 searches and sev-eral significant drug seizures. Inquiries are still in progress on up tohalf a dozen cases and four investigations into individuals are pro-ceeding.In conclusion the meeting was told that the processing of intelli-gence given can often take some time, especially if it is used to com-prise a strong legal case against a dealer. Therefore the public maysometimes feel that contacting the gardai is a preferable course ofaction.PERSONAL MONITORED ALARMS:Community Alert PRO Sergeant John Sharkey said the cost ofinstalling 47 personal monitored alarm systems (including two freecourtesy of a grateful installer) had surpassed the government grantof €11,369 by €381. This arose because the grant application was foran initial 39 alarms. The group's finances would cover the shortfall, assisted by a well-supported church gate collection that raised€1,000. There are currently six new alarm applications, with the nexttranche set at 15. Applications forms are available from the gardastation. It is expected, but not yet confirmed, that grant-aid willagain be forthcoming. It was clarified also that an extra bracelet/pen-dant per house would cost a mere €5. SUPER STAYING: Sergeant Sharkey said the superintendent'sannounced retirement was now on hold and the intended goodwillcard could remain likewise. CRIME REPORT: Sergeant Sharkey described crime figures forthe seven-week period since the previous meeting as "satisfactory,"with no fatal or seriously injurious occurrences but quite a few crim-inal damage and disorderly incidents. He reiterated that the statis-tics covered "only reported or discovered crime." Amongst the milieu were 10 persons detected for drugs possession, arising from 74 street searches and six house searches. Besidesdetection work, Youghal gardai co-operated with other agenciessuch as the Southern Regional Task Force and the local DrugsProject sub-committee, which is comprised of various communityrepresentatives including GPs, social workers, drugs counsellors andformer addicts. The sergeant made reference to the gardai playing an enjoyable five-a-side soccer match with members of the Youth Diversion projectand to a memorable occasion in every sense with the Ciaran HarteMemorial match, during the summer. He asked that the general com-munity seek garda assistance through Community Garda PeterQueally, whenever required. Vetting and caution:The sergeant observed that the gardai are working closely with thetown council in vetting prospective council tenants. Similarly, liai-son with Dublin garda colleagues is persistent regarding non-Irishnationals who may be fugitives from other countries. Several sucharrest warrants were executed over the summer. Sergeant Sharkeyadded that the gardai are also working with the HSE under theChildren First initiative. Proceeding, he advised householders to bewary of bogus callers, whether pretending to be garda personnel ortradesmen, as such practices were relentless.A member from the floor asked whether the town council couldliaise with residents as well as liaise with gardai regarding new res-idents. A councillor present interjected to say that liaising with gar-dai now provided a much improved vetting procedure, than previoustimes. The councillor explained that some instances were beyondcontrol, such as when a boyfriend moves in or marriage evolves. Themeeting had been supplied with information leaflets on ASBOs, inview of a problem during the summer with some youths harassingbusiness staff and customers. In a brief discussion, Sergeant Sharkeysaid issuing ASBOs was "labour intensive" and could involve vari-ous personnel over a convoluted and lengthy procedure. He said itwas often preferable and more satisfactory to employ the criminallaw process in tandem with the Juvenile Liaison officer. ASBOsserved as deterrents nonetheless, he added. The Community Alert's next meeting is the AGM, on TuesdayOctober 5th in the Walter Raleigh Hotel at 7.45 p.m.

Once again this year we have seen that March and September arethe busiest months of the year in terms of the range of activities, teams and games played. The past ten days have seen a return tohectic activity and scrambling for pitches around the county, andin Killeagh-Ita's that was certainly true. Here's a round-up of someof our activities over that time.U-11 Hurling Our U-11 hurlers have had a very productive pasttwo weeks. In the East Cork-West Waterford league, we have a100% record after 3 games, having beaten Brickey Rangers andBallyduff away, and Clashmore at home. Sandwiched betweenthese games was the minor matter of an East Cork final againstour neighbours Kiltha Og which was played on Tuesday August31st last. It was a thrilling encounter, and having looked to becomfortably in front at half time, we were put to the pin of our col-lar in the second half before two late goals secured our victory.Well done boys - the ice-creams at Coleman's were well earned!Visitors from Lisdowney Oh the excitement! Some of ouryoungest hurlers were playing their first match and it was to beagainst Kilkenny! Could you beat that? Well, to be exact, it wasLisdowney, from the northern end of Co. Kilkenny, who travelleden masse to Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Saturday last. In a welter ofexcitement, matches were played at Under 6, Under 8, Under 10(a depleted selection due to other commitments in Aghada) andUnder 12 level. All the games were eagerly contested, and theKilkenny visitors certainly seemed to enjoy their day in Killeagh, which they followed with a trip to Fota Wildlife Park. Manythanks to Johnny Brenner for organising the day's events, and tothe many parents who brought the mountains of sandwiches, cakes and treats to feed the masses. It was one of those days thatmany, young and old, who were present, will remember for quitesome time.U-16 Hurling Our Under 16 hurlers have also had a hectic sched-ule. The East Cork A Final against Kiltha Og was played onAugust 30th, and we managed to secure a draw with a late goal.In the replay, played last Sunday after the All-Ireland Final, wewere second best, and so we were drawn against St. Finbarr's inthe County Championship. This match, played in the Glen Fieldon Saturday last, was a real cracker. Minus one of our main play-ers, Shane McCarthy, because of injury, we battled gamelythroughout, but were behind by two points when the final whistleblew. An scór deiridh: Cumann Barra Naofa 2-10; Cilliath-Íde 2-8. Many thanks to our young and enthusiastic management teamof Kieran Lane, David Meade and Tadgh O' Connor - you haveperformed admirably all through the year. The focus now turns tofootball, and we hope success will not be too far away.U-10 Hurling 20 young hurlers had an early start on Saturday lastas we headed to Aghada for the final day of the summer blitzesseason. 22 teams, hundreds of cars, 6 pitches, countless cones, anda sunny morning - a great occasion! The whole event was a cred-it to the predictably efficient Aghada Juvenile Club - well done toMichael Mulry and his huge team of volunteers for all the workdone in preparing and managing the day. Our two teams had threegames each and had a very enjoyable day. We have a bit of workto do on our hurling skills to reach the level that some of ourneighbouring clubs are at, but we'll continue that work day in dayout. Our next outing is to Cobh on this Wednesday (15th) forUnder 9 and Under 10 matches, while our Under 9 footballers willbe involved in a blitz in Killeagh on Saturday morning next. Keeppractising, lads - the more you practice the better you will be!Parish Football Leagues Our Under 10 Parish Leagues began onThursday last at 6.00, managing to avoid the rain by starting andfinishing on time! Kevin O'Driscoll, Alan Curran, Tom Kelly andDeclan Fogarty are the four managers of the teams, and they gaveinvaluable coaching before the games began. In the matches,Padraig Leahy's Yellow team were just too strong for DarraghGeary's Blue team, while Kieran Daly's Red team just edged outAndrew Foley's Green team in the other game. Round 2 of the

leagues takes place this Thursday (16th) at 6.00, so a reminder toall 2000, 2001 and 2002 boys - bígí ann gan teip!Congratulations Those of you who were in Páirc Uí Chinnéideon Saturday week last for the East Cork Junior A Hurling derbybetween Dungourney and Castlemartyr (well done to the Reds ongarnering 2-in-arow) must have been very impressed by the qual-ity of the beautiful souvenir programme produced for the occa-sion. A great product, organised by a great team - well done andcongratulations to Ursula, Yvonne, Deirdre and the others fromthe Juvenile committee who worked so hard to get the programmeto such a high standard. Many thanks also to those who helped tosell the programme on the night.

Gus HorganLate of Strand Street, Youghal

Who died on the 21st of September 2009God looked around his garden and saw an empty space,He looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face,

He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest,God’s garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.God knew you were in pain and a cure was not to be,

So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered come to me.With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away,Although we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay.It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone,

For part of us went with you the day God called you home.

Sadly missed by his loving daughter Michelle and her partner Steven.

Clashmore - Kinsalebeg Ladies FootballUnder 12's Unfortunately for our under 12' girls they were beaten by just asmall margin of two points on Monday night last in the semi finalagainst nDeise Girls This match was an absolute cracker onewhich our girls can be proud of they never gave up right to the end. This team have had some great victories right throughout the yearand well be a team to watch for in the future. Well-done girls keeptrying it will pay off in the endClashmore - Kinsalebeg Junior Ladies Football - CountyChampions! On Saturday September 4th our Junior Ladies spon-sored by Noel Coughlan Construction travelled to Kilmacthomasto take on Tramore in the Junior County Football Final. For thepast five years this team has made it through to the final but despitetheir best efforts over the past four they failed to win the covetedtitle. Unlike Kilkenny this brilliant team of ladies had no plans tomake it five in a row in 2010. Headed up by team captain CiaraDower, 2010 not going to be like every other year for this invinci-ble team of players, as they headed off on Saturday morningaccompanied by their loyal following of supporters. From the throw in this has to have been one of the finest games ofladies football between two equally great teams played in thecounty for a long time as both sides fought hard to try and see offthe other. It was a constant battle right throughout the first halfwith neither team willing to give way with just a point between theteams at half time. The game resumed it the same intensity for thesecond half matching score for score and at the full time whistlebut the fight was not over yet as it was all level on the score board. Both teams resumed extra time with great vigour with both teams'level again at the end of the first ten minutes. However years ofhard work and the great hunger for victory finally paid of for ourgirls. The spell had finally been broken for the fit bunch of ladiesfrom Clashmore as extra time finished with an eight-point victoryover a devastated Tramore team with a final score was 5-18 to 6-13.Huge credit and thanks must go to "Riordan" and all our manage-ment team and our trainers who never gave up the dream of coun-try victory even on the darkest days when all hopes were dashedthey helped the girls pick up the pieces and this year they triedeven harder to get the girls in tip top shape and they did just that.Great credit must go to Philip and Declan and all the trainers overthe years for huge commitment you have given to training the girls. It has to have been one of the proudest moments for Conor and Joewho have been there for all the years and never lost sight of thecoveted victory [there are those who believe it is Conor's newsmile did the trick!] Conor O Riordan Philip Dee DeclanCoughlan and Joe Flanagan thank you all so very much - as for allthe times you were accused of shouting at us like cattle - we takeit all back it worked! The team selected on the day were Evelyn OBrien in goals, backs Ciara Dower [Capt.,] Sinead [mammy] ORourke, Triona Fitzgerald, Ger Daly, Aileen Barron, LouiseCoughlan in mid field we had the mighty combination of EmmaDonovan and Cliona O Keeffe, Our forwards were Clodagh DeBurca, Clare Power Edel Wilson Sarah Ledingham Ashling ODonnell and Trish Fitzgerald Our subs were Brid Dee Shelly OBrien Paula Kelly Aine Lombard Leanne Kenneally YvonneCoughlan Fiona Coughlan Sarah Coughlan Aileen Barron LouiseWilson Sadhbh Cunningham and of course the mighty MargaretFoley who unfortunately sustained an injury during the year we aredelighted to see you back on your feet Margaret and no doubtknowing you that new leg will be back in the boot and you will beback to full fitness in no time. Leanne Kenneally was another play-er carrying an injury into this final and we also wish her a speedyrecovery. This was a fantastic team performance you can all bevery proud of your achievement girls! We must now focus on the Munster semi final which is fixed forOctober 2nd training this Friday night at 7.30 and again on Sundayat 12 noon keep up the good work and who knows a Munster titlemay well be in sight!

Clashmore Heritage Centre In this month of September, the Clashmore Heritage Centre, at thetop of the village and housed in that lovely-restored church, is stillopen daily to visitors. This is a very important attraction in an oldvillage like Clashmore where you had a vibrant commercial andsocial community for hundreds of years. The type of records andanecdotes now being sought by thousands living all over theworld, regarding their roots, means that the Heritage Centre willbe the keystone and focus for visitors - particularly those return-ing to their home-place - in future years. Although the schoolshave reopened, we still have some holidaymakers and touristspassing by - as long as the good weather stays with us. Thereforethe public-relations arm of the Heritage Society will continue tomention their exceptional building, containing so many old imple-ments, curios and photos, at every opportunity. And on that note, may we send out a plea for copies of old photosof Clashmore and area - to be displayed in turn on the walls of thecentre. Whether of people, events, machinery, houses, farm orfishing - they will all be appreciated and treasured. TEAM YOUGHAL MAIN SPONSORSJACK O'PATSY POTTERY

By Derek KielyTEAM Youghal had their offi-cial launch Monday Sept 6th atthe 'Mall Arts Centre' in theMall House ahead of theirattempt to defend their 'RaceAround Ireland' eight personteam title. The race around Ireland is farand away the toughest cyclingendurance test in Europe and isthe World's second toughestendurance race and in Irelandthe cyclists of Team Youghalwill have to cover a distance of1,350 miles travelling throughall four Irish Provinces with

many steep climbs and sharpdescents along the way, startingat 8pm on Tuesday the 14th ofSeptember in Navan. What makes this such a fantasticchallenge is the constant flow ofthe race which runs 24 hours aday from start to finish, with nolet up and that overwhelmingdesire not only to complete therace which is a huge challenge initself, but to win it and defendtitles! The race is part of the UltraMarathon Cycling Association(UMCA) World Cup Series andthe race is organised by theNavan Road Club and is sanc-tioned by Cycling Ireland.Unlike other cycling races suchas the RÁS or the Tour de France, the course is in no way roped off, there are no marshals controllingtraffic flow, and there are noplanned rest stops or stages inthis event. In terms of a sporting event, thisreally is up there with one of thetoughest tests there is as the relaystyle strategy of Team Youghalwill come into play over the fouror five days of constant peddling. There will be a cyclist racing atall times 24 hours a day and theteam should enter County Corkvia Kerry on Thursday night andmake its way by Mizen Head, onthrough Schull, Bantry,Skibbereen, through the outskirtsof Cork City and at approximate-ly 7am on Friday morning theteam should be tackling StPatrick's Hill and then make itsway on to East Cork, throughCarrigtwohill, Midleton,Castlemartyr, Killeagh and then

through its home town of Youghal where there is one of many timestations. When you consider that this part of the race is just Cork City and

Cork County it puts the 1,350 mile distance into perspective. The Team Youghal cyclists will cycle to raise funds and moreimportantly raise awareness for the Emer Casey Foundation andare Ger Flanagan, Tommy Roche, Christy McCarthy, BrianFitzgerald, Kieran Groeger, Eoin Whyte, Michael McCarthy andJohn Twomey.

Following a video display at the official launch Mayor of YoughalTown Council Mary Linehan Foley said "It is my pleasure tolaunch Team Youghal's bid to defend their Race Around Irelandtitle and I want to thank the lads for their dedication and commit-ment to a very worthy cause in the Emer Casey Foundation, theyhave put Youghal on the map in a sporting sense and have raisedawareness to a foundation that deserves everyone's support".
