SEARCH ENGINE ?
Search engines are designed to search for specific information on the world wide web (www) and FTP servers.
These are programs that search documents for specified keywords and returns a list of relevant documents where the keywords are found.
The search results are generally presented in a list of results or "search engine results pages". The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files.

In February 2014, Google controlled 67.5 percent of US search query volume. Bing had 18.4 percent and Yahoo, 10.3 percent. These numbers were essentially unchanged from last month.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Spiders crawl the web to find new
documents (web pages, images, documents...)
The search engine then indexes the
results found across thousands of
machines.
An overall score is then established for
each page upon searching (More than 200 factors are taken into consideration)
Users type in they search keywords
Half a second after that, they get results ranked according to
the overall page score for that
specific keyword

WHAT IS SEO?
SEO (Search engine optimization) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the organic search results.
In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engines users. SEO may target different kinds of search which may be image search, video search etc…

SEM (Search engine Marketing) is about the paid search marketing of a website or a web page in via sponsored or In-organic search results.
It is sometimes referred to as CPC (cost-per- click) or PPC (pay-per-click) marketing, because most search ads are sold on a CPC / PPC basis.
