Well itrsquos time again to celebrate the great American sport of baseball And this year the new movie ldquo42rdquo

is out on the life of Jackie Robinson the first African-American to break the color barrier in the Big Leagues signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers I canrsquot wait to see it And Irsquoll be listening for a special scene reported to me by a Presbyterian friend In the face of yet another challenge Dodger owner Branch Rickey counsels ldquoRobinsonrsquos a Methodist Irsquom a Methodist Godrsquos a Methodist We canrsquot go wrongrdquo

In point of fact Wesley Branch Rickey was a white Methodist who graduated from Ohio Wesleyan and Robinson an African-American who moved to Pasadena as a boy and was greatly influenced by the Rev Karl Downs pastor of the Scott UMC in Pasadena Robinson became a friend of Martin Luther King Jr Late in life at the age of 83 and wheel-chair bound Rickey apologized to him for not joining them at the march on Selma Alabama a key turning point in the Civil Rights Movement Methodists indeed

So take a couple hours out and listen to Vin Scully broadcast a game Yoursquoll feel better For as another writer said ldquoBaseball is a sport that celebrates the amiable meanderings of timeless gracerdquo

That sounds pretty Methodist too Timeless grace Free of charge for one and all Transforming lives Transforming the world

Happy summer Batter up
