July 4th We want to provide an important update on the neighborhood's annual July 4th Carnival. The neighborhood association will no longer host the event. The board had to make this tough decision after several years of struggling with low volunteerism, which resulted in the same few people performing all of the work. There has been a steady decline in carnival participants as well. A decrease in volunteers and participants has created a financial loss for the event. In addition, the Twain playground will be closed for reconstruction through the summer, which will impact the use of that space.

We are fortunate to have a neighbor working to continue the Parade so we will still be able to enjoy festivities celebrating the birth of our great country. I am already planning how to decorate my Hoola-Hoop!

For more than two decades we have enjoyed this wonderful event as a result of the selfless dedication of our neighbors. To all of you who pitched-in over the years, we sincerely thank you and please know this was a difficult decision the Board has struggled with for years.

SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

Thieves are pumped about this new crime It’s called “sliding” and it’s growing in Houston. Police say it is an easy crime of opportunity that requires no tools and no confrontation and relies on our distraction. The theft happens in just seconds and usually goes unnoticed until the thief is long gone.

The thief often arrives earlier and waits for the right victim. Or some-times he pulls in just as you get involved with the buttons on the pump. He “slides” below your sight, opens the door and grabs whatever is there — purse, phone, laptop, personal papers — what-ever he can reach.

According to statistics, women are the victims more often because they typically leave their purse in the car and take out just the credit card they need for the gas. And most people, men or women, typically don’t lock their car while fill-ing their tank. Thieves tend to target neighborhoods that feel “safe”, where drivers let their guards down.

It is an easy crime to prevent:

1. Always remove your keys and lock your doors when standing out-side of your car.

2. Keep valuables out of sight — under the seat or in the console.

3. Don’t let your phone distract you. Pay attention to who is nearby.

Firehouse Subs donates a defibrillator Our neighbor, Jeff Lepow, owner of the popular Firehouse Subs at Bellaire Blvd. and Stella Link, recently donated an AED — Automated External Defibrillator — to the Precinct 1 Constable for use exclu-sively in Braeswood Place.

Our deputies have been trained in its proper use, and the device will be available on all patrol shifts. Having it close by can mean sav-ing a heart attack victim who is waiting on paramedics to arrive.

Thank you Jeff and Firehouse Subs for your generous donation.

When you are walking or jogging or biking

through the neighborhood,

be vigilant.

Tell your neighbors when they have left valuables visible in

their car or have left their garage door open and exposed to thieves.

Report cars and people that don’t seem to fit in or have a destination.

PROJECT BRAYS by Billy Pilgrim

The current contract of Project Brays from Bertner to 2,200 feet west of Buffalo Speedway is 46%+ complete. Phases 5 and 6 are complete. Contouring and installation of retaining walls are ongoing. The next segment of the current contract from the outfall on the north bank just west of the waste treatment plant to Greenbriar began on December 12, 2016. As of mid-January, footings for the retaining wall along this section west of Kirby were installed and forming of the wall was underway. Phase 1 construction along the south bank from Bertner to South Main has been delayed due to Center Point and AT&T having to relocate their utility lines. When that exercise is completed, final contouring and retaining wall installation will take place. Phase 1 retaining walls along the south bank continue to be installed. Backfilling of the retaining wall west of Kirby began on January 11. About 100 yards of retaining wall west of Lorrie Street still needs to be installed along that section. At its December 20, 2016 meeting, the Harris County Commissioner’s Court approved the employment of three consulting engineering firms by the Harris County Flood Control District to develop plans for replacing the Greenbriar and Buffalo Speedway bridges and lengthening the Stella Link Bridge about 50 feet to the south. The Buffalo Speedway Bridge will be first with replacement scheduled for 2018. It will look like the Lidstone Bridge that was installed downstream near the Gulfgate/Pine Valley area and will be a standard TxDOT box beam type of structure with four 11 foot wide lanes and 6 foot wide sidewalks. Replacement of the Buffalo Speedway Bridge will be followed by replacement of the Greenbriar Bridge in 2019. The Stella Link Bridge will be modified last about 2020 +/-. Replacement of the Buffalo Speedway Bridge will take about one year with traffic detoured to Kirby and Stella Link. The next contract from 2,200 feet west of Buffalo Speedway west to South Rice is scheduled to be issued for bids during the first quarter of 2017. Following the bid period, review and approval, construction of that contract will begin in the second quarter of 2017 and complete in the third quarter of 2018. Of course it goes without saying that the above schedules are subject to circumstances beyond the control of HCFCD.

TRAFFIC STUDY UPDATE by Phil McCormick and Nicole Shah

Recently, we received notice from the City of Houston that the Houston Fire Department has approved our proposed plans for both Braes Heights and Ayrshire. Specifically, HFD has tested and accepted the speed cushions with three separate cushions, similar to what currently exists in the 3600 block of Glen Haven. HFD approved the Braes Heights plan as presented at our public meeting last February, with the addition of speed cushions on Merrick that was recommended based on all relevant feedback. We are awaiting an estimated timing for temporary installation and follow-up testing from COH. With respect to Ayrshire, due to significant changes to the proposed plan since the public meeting in February 2016, an additional public meeting is currently being planned for Tuesday, February 21 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm at Pershing Auditorium. The City of Houston will be mailing out public meeting notices. Based on resident feedback, the new Ayrshire concept plan has a welcome island on Academy near Gramercy, two speed cushions along Academy, and speed cushions on the 4000 blocks of Bluebonnet, Turnberry, Aberdeen, and Merrick.

PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS by Renee Marie Hawk, PTO VP Communications

Pershing Cheerleaders represented our school in an amazing live performance for thousands of cheering fans in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida and were viewed by millions of viewers on national TV on New Year's Eve! Be sure to congratulate them when you see them for being awarded the distinct honor of taking part in the All American Halftime Show™ and being recognized among the nation’s top pageantry performers. Special thanks to Dr. Shetzer and Coach Carswell for their support. Thank you all who supported Pershing's 15 year old garden education program and neighborhood farmer's mar-ket by donating to the school's Eagle Scout greenhouse project. Pershing now has a brand new greenhouse and will be able to grow more fruits, vegetables and herbs year round. The garden still operates on Saturdays from 8 am to 11:30 am, weather permitting. Stop by and chat with Master Gardener/History teacher Mr. Coursey and check out the variety of 23 fresh winter vegetables, including: green and purple kohlrabi, bok choy, Chinese okra, swiss chard, cabbage, kale, curly mustard, collards, and golden beets. GARDEN OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

Yard of the month for February is located at 3835 Grennoch, home of Chris and Marlene Orth. The most ap-pealing features of this yard are the two very large live oak trees which spread across the entire yard and are surrounded at the base by jasmine beds. The recent temperature change that left many of our plants and shrubs frozen, affected only a potted bougainvillea. The more freeze tolerant plants found in the boxwood enclosed beds include; oak leaf hydrangea, flax lily, camellia, legularia, azalea, Egyptian pattern plant and both a dwarf and a tree bottle brush. The homeowners have lived in two different homes in Braeswood Place. This seems to be the case with many of our featured yards where the homeowner either grew up here and/or has owned two or more homes here. There is much to like about our neighborhood!!

ADS PAGE ONE - ½ text, ½ ads FEBRUARY LAWN MAINTENANCE

1. Trim and shape shrubs and hedges to a desired size before the growing season starts. Consider the possibility of giving your plants a new shape. 2. Clean out leaves and pull weeds from flower beds. 3. Prune roses to a third of their height, to remove spindly growth and fortify structure. Remove deadwood as well as the deadwood draws energy from the plants. Valentine's Day is a perfect time to plant new roses. 4. Trench flower bed edges and define their perimeters with a sharp, straight-edge spade. 5. Turn soil in the flower beds to aerate. A sharp shooter spade can be used. 6. Apply a granular pre-emergence herbicide to the flower beds. This is a selective herbicide that will kill only broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds. It works by preventing seed germination. 7. Mow bi-weekly. 8. Mower blade tip: sharpen or replace mower blade every 2-3 months during the growing season. A sharp mower blade creates a cleaner cut and reduces operator fatigue. 9. Mow grass at 3 inches high with a grass catcher. The grass catcher will collect any weeds that have gone to seed and prevent re-seeding. Apply Scott’s weed and feed fertilizer with atrazine which is excellent for eliminating dollar weed.

A few years ago, I was thinking about what to give my wife Susan for Valentine’s Day. The usual things came to mind—flowers, candy, a card. But then a different idea struck me.

You see, I handle most of our family finances (it’s my job, after all). And I realized how vulnerable Susan would be if anything happened to me. The problem would not be money, but knowledge. She just didn’t have much exposure to all of our assets and accounts. She would not necessarily know how to access much of our wealth. Trying to figure that out while keeping the bills paid and grieving would be a terrible burden I didn’t want her to face.

So, on one side of a 3x5 note card I wrote down the critical information she would need to access all of our accounts, insurance policies and online records. I suggested she keep it somewhere safe and easy to find.

You can think of the card as a key to accessing your family’s wealth. I also think of it as the top of a pyramid of information about our finances. It tells you where and how to access the next level down in the pyramid, which will have details about account balances, etc. From there you can access still lower levels with increasingly detailed records of transactions, history and so on.

Would you or your spouse benefit from this gift? Valentine’s is the perfect time for it. Since it involves things we don’t like to talk about, making a gift of it ensures you won’t put it off until it’s too late. And while a note card may not sound as romantic as roses, it may show even more thought and caring.
