Published by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, this useful guide covers everything from in-home care and recreational activities to housing, career counseling and meals on wheels, and Federation is proud to support many of these vital programs. If you or someone you love is looking for a Yiddish class, would like to volunteer, or needs a friendly visitor, you’ll find accurate, clear information in this directory.

Care Management ensures the most appropriate, timely and cost-effective services for each client, by assessing the client’s needs, developing a service plan, securing the needed services and moni-toring them and the client over time. This is usually done in the client’s home.

Provides services enabling older persons to main-tain personal independence within their commu-nity. These services include social work assess-ments, home visits, ongoing care management, home care, home-delivered meals, Friendly Visitors, transporta-tion for shopping, and respite service for caregivers. Also assists persons who need to find quality assisted living and nursing home placement. Provides counseling services (some of which are Medicare-reimbursed) to persons 65 and over and their families. Counselors help older persons and their families make transitions and examine such issues as health, aging, retirement, loss, sexual-ity, caregiving and change of living arrangements. Clients may be seen in their homes or at any of the other JFCS offices.

NATURALLY OCCURRING RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES (NORC) SUPPORTIVE SERVICES PROGRAMS

The NORC programs are a way to connect seniors who are living inde-pendently in their own homes to a network of supportive services. NORC programs are active in the North-east Philadelphia neighborhoods of Rhawnhurst (Rhawnhurst NORC) and Bustleton-Somerton (SeniorCHAI), and at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El in Wynnewood.

SeniorCHAI is a collaborative effort of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, the Jewish Federation of Greater Phil-adelphia, the Jewish Community Centers, JEVS Human Services, and Federation Housing, Inc. This program is an outgrowth of the STAR NORC programs begun by JFCS.

This NORC partnership of Jewish Family and Children’s Service and Golden Slipper Center for Seniors serves seniors living in the Overbrook Park and Main Line communities. Monthly socializa-tion lunch programs occur at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El. Abramson Center for Jewish Life1425 Horsham Road, North Wales, PA 19454 215.371.3000Volunteer opportunities at Abramson include friendly visiting, as well as assisting with the many religious-life, social and educa-tional activities. Some specific programs are:

Project SHEMA (Sharing and Enriching through Multigenera-tional Activities) – SHEMA brings together young people from synagogues and other community groups – along with families and teachers – with nursing home residents for Shabbat and holi-day celebrations.

Auxiliary – Abramson Auxiliary volunteers actively participate in Auxiliary-sponsored programs including Shabbat, Mother’s and Father’s Day, birthday, holiday and other celebrations for residents. Members take residents on outings, and host afternoon teas and bingo to enrich resident life. Auxiliary volunteers run a gift shop, which raises funds to support these activities.

267.256.2020Provides survivors who lived under Nazi occupation and domina-tion during World War II with services such as home care, coun-seling, housekeeping, adult day care and caregiver support, as well as funds for emergencies like special medical needs. Fund-ing is provided through a grant to JFCS from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and the Jewish Federa-tion of Greater Philadelphia. JFCS also offers survivors assis-tance with filling out applications for Holocaust entitlements.

215.832.0900 HIAS and Council Migration Service of Philadelphia (HIAS and Council) provides immigration services. It is recognized by the Department of Justice as eligible to host accredited represen-tatives who are immigration specialists. HIAS and Council’s Russian-speaking accredited representatives provide assistance to elderly citizens or refugees who seek to bring family members to the United States. It provides citizenship application assistance to elderly refugees and immigrants so they can participate fully in American civic life, permitting them to retain or obtain safety net public benefits. It particularly assists disabled elderly seeking citi-zenship. In addition, The Klein Center provides English classes and socialization services to elderly new Americans. Both organi-zations are collaborating on a new project called NACCS – New American Case Management, Citizenship and Socialization for frail and at-risk immigrants and refugees.
