Hazel Blanche Porz Is the 2011 Geauga County Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. Hazel Blanche Porz has been chosen to be honored at the Geauga County Department on Aging’s Annual meeting as the 2011 Geauga County Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. Hazel was born in East Cleveland on April 18, 1932 and was one of eight children. She graduated from Shaw High School and married Jim Porz on September 1, 1951. She and Jim celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. They set up housekeeping in East Cleveland; but after four years, they moved to Euclid where they had their first of three boys, Jim; followed by Donald and Kenneth. After the boys left for college, Hazel and Jim moved to East Claridon where she became an active volunteer at the Geauga Department on Aging and at the Chardon United Methodist Church. As her boys married, she also took her role as Grandma very seriously and supported the activities of her three granddaughters. Following their accomplishments throughout their school years, she presented each, upon graduation from high school, with a scrapbook highlighting their endeavors. Hazel also has two grandsons approaching school age, and she awaits the addition of sporting and school events for her boys. Hazel Porz has volunteered at the Department on Aging weekly, for more than eighteen years in the accounting offices. Behind the scene, she has typed bills, prepared and copied records, according to county standards. She even volunteered when her supervisor was on vacation, insuring all vendors received their payments in a timely fashion. Over the years, Hazel also taught Sunday school, served on the Alter Guild and sang in the church choir. She worked on several mission projects through the United Methodist Women’s group and she learned to play the bells to participate in the bell choir. Hazel’s hobbies have included: traveling with her husband all over the United States, participating in Book Club, Stitch Group, and a couples’ Theater Group. She enjoys eating out, going to concerts, Indians’ baseball games and watching her middle son compete in Master’s Track meets and races. Hazel has shared that one of her life’s greatest accomplishments was: “Raising our three sons,” followed by “Learning to play the bells”. Both of these answers shocked the staff at the Department on Aging, who all acclaimed “Hazel is the best baker and cook in the county!” She has even won several pie baking contests to prove their point! Hazel’s dedication and service to this county has earned our appreciation, and for her years of dedication and service, Hazel has earned the right to be named the Geauga County Outstanding Senior Citizen for 2011.
