College Application ProcessHow do I apply?• 4 year college bound students - Check your deadlines• 2 year college bound students - rolling admissions, apply

anytime!• Go to your college’s website and complete the online

application. Have your transcript and your schedule accessible.

• Request letters of recommendation (if applicable).• Send your test scores to your college (ACT, SAT, Accuplacer,

ASVAB).• ACT - $12 per school, login and request schools• Accuplacer - take for two year college admission

• Request your transcript through Family Connection*Fee Waivers are available in the Career Center

College Application Process

• Use Family Connection for your college lists.• ‘Colleges I'm thinking about’• ‘Colleges I'm applying to’• Use the graph feature (scattergrams) in Family

Connection to know the likelihood of being accepted.

• Go to school’s site to apply - look for ‘Admissions’, ‘Apply Now’, ‘Freshman Admissions’, ‘Undergraduate Admissions’, etc.

Common Application

• Only way to apply for some schools• Most 4-year schools don’t use the Common App• Make sure you indicate in Family Connection if

you are applying via Common App.• www.commonapp.org• Contact your counselor if you need help

Letters of Recommendation

1. Make the first request in person!2. Ask, “Can you write me a glowing letter of

recommendation’?3. Update your Resume’ in FC and/or supply the recommender

with a ‘Brag-Sheet’4. In Family Connection make the electronic request, you can

only request letters of rec from colleges in your ‘Colleges I’m Applying To’ list.

5. You have to click “submitted application”6. Follow-up with a Thank You and/or Thank You Note

TIPS FOR AN EFFECTIVE PERSONAL ESSAY

• Think positively—You can do this!• Discuss something you feel strongly about or an

experience that changed you• Be yourself and use your voice• Don’t repeat something already stated in your

application• Grab the reader’s attention right away• Essay can be like a tie-breaker• See an English teacher for help
