Pandemic Project MISSION: You are a member of the World Health Organization (WHO). Rumors have recently been spreading about a new global pandemic. Your team is researching these rumors to find the truth and prevent a possible disaster. Upon discovery of a deadly disease outbreak, your group will determine causes, symptoms, treatments and prevention methods that will help save humanity. *Pandemic Definition:

Unit Overview: Day 1/2: A Global Pandemic/Pathogens Day 3: Sickening Symptoms Day 4: How Do We Stop It: Part 1 - Our Body’s Natural Defenses Day 5: How Do We Stop It: Part 2 - Hope For the Future Day 6/7: Spreading Awareness Day 8: Final Newscasts [Monday, October 13th]

Day 1: A Global Pandemic!  *Define Pathogens [p.332]: Using page 332 and the graphic organizer below, label all four types of pathogens AND give two examples of diseases caused by that type of pathogen.

***Which pathogen type is going to be responsible for your disease? ________________________

How Pathogens Are Spread (pg. 333-335)

Specific Example(s)

*** You and your team have discovered a deadly disease that is quickly spreading through the

country of _________________________________ and has killed as many as _________________

people! After careful study, you realize this is a new disease that has never been seen before.

Your team have given it the name of ______________________________________ (name your disease).

You continue to research this disease in your W.H.O. lab to discover more details.

***List 3+ methods of how the _______________________ disease spreads from person to person.

Day 3: Sickening Symptoms SETTING: Today your team has had a chance to study many different victims of the deadly pandemic. You have discovered that most cases of the disease have common symptoms. *DEFINE SYMPTOMS: *DEFINE COMMUNICABLE DISEASES [p. 332]:

Practice diagnosing four cases of common communicable diseases using pages 341-345.

Case 1: A teacher has a fever, a cough, weakness, chills, and difficulty breathing.

Your Diagnosis: __________________________________________

Treatment for the Patient:

Case 2: A teenager has swollen lymph nodes in the neck and throat. They are often very tired, lack an

appetite, and are experiencing a fever, headache, and sore throat.

Your Diagnosis: __________________________________________

Treatment for the Patient:

Case 3: A young boy has a red and painful throat, a fever, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck and

throat.

Your Diagnosis: __________________________________________

Treatment for the Patient:

Case 4: A man has yellowish skin, a fever, headache, sore throat, vomits often, and little appetite.

Day 4: How Do We Stop It - Part 1:  Our Body’s Natural Defenses

SETTING: Today your team will examine ways that our bodies attempt to fight off diseases. While the pandemic seems to affect almost everyone, some people seem resistant to it and have been able to avoid illness. Perhaps our bodies are able to protect themselves from this deadly disease!

Our body has five major barriers that generally stop most pathogens from making us really sick. Using pg. 336, for each of the five major barriers draw a picture AND describe each that can help us survive! ***How did your disease sneak past one or more of the 5 major barriers? Think back to how your disease is able to spread from person to person.

Ways your disease spreads:

Major barrier(s) it sneaks through:

How does it get past?

Day 5: How Do We Stop It - Part 2:  Hope For the Future!

SETTING: The ____________________________ Pandemic has spread to all continents (even Antarctica). The future of humanity rests on your shoulders! You and your team must find someone that has survived the ___________________________________ disease so you can create a vaccine to prevent the disease from spreading. Once you have the vaccine, you’ll be able to create antibodies that will help people develop immunity to the Pandemic. *DEFINE ANTIBODIES [p. 338]: *DEFINE VACCINE [p. 340]: *DEFINE IMMUNITY [p.340]: ***For the millions of people who currently HAVE the disease , what do they need to do to get back to 100% health? List 3+ steps for TREATMENT of the disease and why/how it will heal them:

Treatment for the Disease  Why/how will this help them?

Day 6: Spreading Awareness  You and your team have been asked to share your disease research with the world. They have requested you share the following information:

➔ Name of the disease ➔ Name of researchers ➔ Where it started/how many deaths it caused ➔ Pathogen type that causes it ➔ 3+ ways it is spread ➔ How it breaks through the major barriers ➔ 5+ symptoms of the disease ➔ 3+ ways to treat it ➔ 4+ ways to prevent the disease ➔ 3+ interesting facts

present your research: *Make an iMovie news documentary to share your information with the world!

You will be graded using this rubric:

4- Above Average 3- Average 2- Below Average 1- Unacceptable

Group Work Group members take responsibility for themselves, help the team, respect and include all members, organize their work, and make/complete decisions together.

Group members take responsibility, show respect, members are organized, and make decisions together but one element is missing, needs work, or group is occasionally off-task.

Group members mostly take responsibility and show respect, members are mostly organized, making decisions together but some elements are missing, need work, or needed to be redirected often.

Members are off-task and/or disrespectful to each other, teacher has to intervene, time is wasted, members do not do tasks they agree to complete, etc.

RESEARCH NOTES:  Our disease is NAMED

___________________________________________________________________.

It started in the country of _____________________________ and

HAS killed about ___________________ people before we,

_________________________________________________________________________ [names of group

members], were able to really understand the disease.

It is caused by the pathogen type __________________________ and is

spread in the following ways:
