Environmental conservationfor better world
Today, the world has come underenvironmental degradation due to many humanactivities such as excessive exploitation ofnatural resources and indiscriminate discardingof hazardous wastes and sewage.
World population is growing day by day, calling for increasing supply of safe water.Similarly, demand of water for the people, factories, farmlands and other enterprises is onthe increase. So, the government is seekingmore ways apart from constructing dams tomeet the nation’s demands of irrigation waterand potable water.
So, it is required to utilize and conservewater sources systematically. In particular, factories near rivers and creeks have to treatsewage and hazardous chemicals beforethrowing them away. Waste water fromdistilleries, leather factories, peas mills, coldstorages, prawn processing plants, textile plants, fish sauce factories, soft drink factories andchemical factories contains harmful chemicalagents.
Water in a river or creek contaminatedwith such chemical agents is fatal to aquaticcreatures in it and harmful to the health of thosewho use that water. Indiscriminately throwingaway untreated sewage to water sources, settingup latrines on banks of rivers and creeks andtaking bath and washing clothes on edges ofrivers and creeks are some causes of waterpollution.
Household waste is also consisted ofperishable chemical agents, and that causeswater pollution if it is thrown away to watersources.
Water pollution, air pollution, soilpollution and deforestation lead toenvironmental deterioration. Therefore, theentire people have to do their bit inenvironmental conservation tasks for the betterworld.

Gulf spill said ‘devastating’ to sea lifeATHENS, 22 Feb—The 2010
Deepwater Horizon gulf oil spill hada “devastating” effect on life on theseafloor that could need years torecover, a US marine scientist says.
Samantha Joye of the Universityof Georgia says studies using asubmersible discovered a layer of deadanimals and oil in the Gulf of Mexicoas thick as 4 inches in some places, the BBC reported Monday.
Joye and colleagues used thesubmersible to survey the lowest layerof water around the destroyedwellhead, known as the benthos.
“The impact on the benthos wasdevastating,” she says.
“Filter-feeding organisms, invertebrate worms, corals, sea fans— all of those were substantiallyimpacted — and by impacted, I mean
essentially killed.”Joye says she disagrees with an
assessment by BP’s compensationfund that the gulf waters will recoverfrom the effects of the spill by the endof 2012.
“The gulf is resilient,” she said. “Ido believe that it will recover fromthis insult, but I don’t think it’s goingto recover fully by 2012.”
The impact at the bottom of theaquatic food chain will inevitably havelong-term effects on species nearerthe surface, she says, including somehumans depend on as a food source.
“I think it’s going to be 2012before we begin to really see thefisheries implications andrepercussions from this,” she said.

Heart drug may help preventblindness
ATHENS, 22 Feb— A statin drug — brand-name Lipitor —may help prevent blindness in people with diabetes, researchersat the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy say. Leadauthor Azza El-Remessy and colleagues say diabetic retinopathyis a leading cause of blindness in adults who have had diabetesfor 10 to 15 years, and there are no government-approved oraltreatments. Surgical methods are expensive and painful, El-Remessy says.
A study using diabetic rats, scheduled to be published in theMarch edition of the journal Diabetologia, found statins preventfree radicals in the retina from killing nerves important tomaintaining vision.

High cholesterol, bloodpressure in middle agetied to early memory
problemsWASHINGTON, 22 Feb—Middle-age men and
women who have cardiovascular issues, such ashigh cholesterol and high blood pressure, may notonly be at risk for heart disease, but for an increasedrisk of developing early cognitive and memoryproblems as well, according to a study releasedMonday.
For the study, 3,486 men and 1,341 women withan average age of 55 underwent cognitive tests threetimes over 10 years. The tests measured reasoning, memory, fluency and vocabulary. Participantsreceived a Framingham risk score that is used topredict 10-year risk of a cardiovascular event. It isbased on age, sex, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure and whether they smoked orhad diabetes. The study found people who hadhigher cardiovascular risk were more likely to havelower cognitive function and a faster rate of overallcognitive decline compared to those with the lowestrisk of heart disease. A 10-percent highercardiovascular risk was associated with poorercognitive test scores in all areas except reasoning formen and fluency for women. For example, a 10percent higher cardiovascular risk was associatedwith a 2.8 percent lower score in the test of memoryfor men and a 7.1 percent lower score in the memorytest for women.—Xinhua

Housing data may have understated extend ofcollapse
WASHINGTON, 22 Feb—A housing tradeassociation is examining the possibility that thedata it releases underestimated the collapse of thehousing industry, the Wall Street Journal reportedon Monday.
The National Association of Realtors, whichissues the monthly existing home sales report thatis closely watched by economists and financialmarkets, may have over-counted home sales datingas far back as 2007, the newspaper said in an articleposted to its web site.
NAR’s home sales count was at odds withcalculations by CoreLogic, a California real estate

analysis firm, according to the report. CoreLogicsays NAR could have overstated home sales by asmuch as 20 percent.
An over-count of home sales may mean thatthere is a bigger backlog of unsold homes and thatit will take longer for the US housing sector to climbout of the deep hole it is already in, dragging on thebroader economic recovery.
The crash of US housing markets, in part becauseof shoddy lending practices, was at the heart of theeconomic meltdown that started in the United Statesand spread around the world.

People struggle to eatheart-healthy foods
WASHINGTON, 22 Feb— People may know whatto add to their diet for heart health, but they stillstruggle to incorporate it into their diets, a USsurvey indicates.
The International Food Information CouncilFunctional Foods/Foods for Health ConsumerTrending Survey indicates eight out of 10 Americansare aware of the relationship between omega-3sand heart health, but 48 percent of Americans arecurrently consuming omega-3s.
“Consuming a diet that is low in saturated andtrans fats, cholesterol and sodium can help reduceyour risk for heart disease,” David Grotto says in astatement.
“But that’s only one side of the equation. It isalso important to choose foods that can promoteheart health such as fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and fiber.”
Other heart-healthy foods are:* Nuts, which provide a rich source of protein,
fiber, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fat.* Monounsaturated fat such as olive, canola,
peanut or high oleic safflower oil, orpolyunsaturated fat such as sunflower, corn orsoybean oil may help promote heart health.
* Salmon, sardines, herring, trout and tuna areterrific sources of omega-3 fatty acids, as areeggs and some fortified food.
* Protein from soy sources can also help reduceheart risk.

Australia’s electricityprices to rise
CANBERRA, 22 Feb— By 2015, Australia’selectricity will cost more than double its 2008 price,a new study indicates. Among the factors responsiblefor Australia’s energy price increases have beenmassive investment in transmission and distributionnetworks and movements in the wholesale marketsdriven by the country’s droughts and mining boom, said the report, released Monday by the AustralianIndustry Group. The report comes amid a stalematein negotiations in Canberra over the shape of thecountry’s carbon pricing scheme.
The government favours a fixed carbon pricebeginning in July 2012, with an emissions tradingscheme kicking in three or four years later. LONDON, 22 Feb—Postal workers getthrough two million red rubber bandsper day, the Royal Mail has revealed. In the past five years, the organizationhas spent almost £5m on four billionbands which are used to bundle letterstogether. Keep Britain Tidy has calledfor their use to be reduced because theysay wild animals can choke on them. The Royal Mail says the bands are nec-essary and that they use biodegradableones. The figures were released to theDaily Telegraph under the Freedom ofInformation Act.
It said that the amount the postal or-ganization spends on bands has in-creased by 40% in five years. KeepBritain Tidy has long campaignedagainst the use of rubber bands. In
2009, about 13,000 discarded bandswere collected by people and sent in tothe charity who then delivered them tothe Royal Mail’s headquarters.DickieFelton, from Keep Britain Tidy, haspreviously said: “We accept thatdropping an elastic band is hardly theworst littering offence in the world, butnone-the-less it is litter.—Internet

LEICESTER, 22 Feb — Adevice which can beworn like a watch couldrevolutionise the wayblood pressure is moni-tored in the next fewyears, scientists say.Researchers at theUniversity of Leicesterand in Singapore havedeveloped a device to
measure pressure in thelargest artery in the body.Evidence shows it givesa much more accuratereading than the arm cuff.
The technology isfunded by the Departmentof Health and backed byHealth Secretary AndrewLansley. It works by asensor in the watch re-
cording the pulse waveof the artery, which is thenfed into a computer to-gether with a traditionalblood pressure readingfrom a cuff.Scientists arethen able to read the pres-sure close to the heart, from the aorta.
Professor BryanWilliams, from the Uni-versity of Leicester’s de-partment of cardiovascu-lar sciences at GlenfieldHospital, said: “The aortais millimetres away fromthe heart and close to thebrain and we have alwaysknown that pressure hereis a bit lower than in thearm. “Unless we measurethe pressure in the aortawe are not getting an ap-preciation of the risks orbenefits of treatment.”

LONDON, 22 Feb —Scientists in the US haveidentified an area of thebrain which makesheroin-addicted rats re-lapse. The study, pub-lished in Nature Neuro-science, showed that partof the medial prefrontalcortex was activated. When the researchersblocked nerve cells in the
region, there were fewerrelapses. Experts in theUK said the study was atechnical ‘tour de force’;however, it did not prom-ise new treatments in hu-mans.
The study worked onthe idea that when addictsstopped taking drugs, butthen returned to the placethey were taking drugs, they were likely to re-lapse. Rats were trained totake drugs in one environ-ment, where they weredelivered a dose ofheroin. The rodents then“went to rehab” in anotherenvironment where thefeel of the floor, lights andsounds were different andthere was no access toheroin.—Internet
WASHINGTON, 22 Feb—Monkeys trained to playcomputer games havehelped to show that it isnot just humans that feelself-doubt and uncer-tainty, a study says. US-based scientists foundthat macaques will “pass”rather than risk choosingthe wrong answer in abrainteaser task. Aware-ness of our own thinkingwas believed to be auniquely human trait.
But the study, pre-sented at the AAAS meet-ing in Washington DC,suggests that our moreprimitive primate rela-tives are capable of suchself-awareness.
Professor John DavidSmith, from State Uni-
versity of New York atBuffalo and MichaelBeran, from GeorgiaState University, carriedout the study.—Internet
LONDON, 22 Feb — Poor alcoholregulation could cost up to 250,000lives in England and Wales over thenext 20 years, doctors warn. Writingin The Lancet, leading liver diseasespecialists say measures including a
minimum price of 50p per unit areurgently needed. They also said thecoalition government was “too close”to the drinks industry.
But the Department of Health saidit was taking “tough action”, whilethe drinks industry said it was“playing its part in tackling alcoholmisuse”. The scientists predicted UKdeaths from liver disease in four dif-ferent scenarios.
The best case was based on the UKfollowing the example of France, which had a deep-seated problem inthe 1960s, with high liver diseasedeaths linked to the consumption ofcheap alcohol.—Internet

The science fiction dream of a flying car willsoon be realized, a designer is telling potentialbuyers and investors.
Sam Bousfield, a California architect, came toSeattle Saturday to pitch his concept in a computer-generated video.
“When artists dream of the future, you alwayssee that traffic moves in the air and people walk onthe ground,” he said.
On the screen, a little red dart takes off from anaircraft carrier and flies in the air.
Bousfield calls the vehicle Switchbladebecause when it’s on the ground its wings fold intothe chassis like the blade of a pocketknife, TheSeattle Times reported.
He is asking prospective customers to make a$2,000 deposit. The “target price” of the kit is$60,000, but the owner will have to add an engineand avionics that will raise the cost to $85,000,and then assemble it himself.
As an “experimental” self-built kit airplane, itneed not be certified by the Federal AviationAdministration.
