I will be leaving an environment that I have worked so hard at becoming use to, and more importantly all of my friends. That is going to be the main thing I miss, my friends and all the good times we have had together. My years here at Shreve seemed to have flown by. I literally find myself asking “Where has all the time gone?” For me, coming to Shreve was an adventure in itself. I didn’t grow up going to a public school, instead I spent kindergarten through eighth grade attending a private, Catholic school. Up until my seventh grade year I, like the majority of my class- mates, wanted to go to Loyola, but by my seventh grade year I knew I need- ed a new environment. My older brother was already attending Shreve, so Shreve seemed to be the best choice. And so, my eighth grade year I decided I would go to Shreve. Camp Gator did introduce me to what would be my group of friends all freshman year. My freshman year was mainly a learning experience. I had to get use to so many new things, lockers in the halls, lockers with combinations, classes with different people, just a number of different things. I wan- dered the circle the first day of school knowing that I would eventually find my way to my class. And, that year I met so many new people, most of whom I would spend the rest of my years at Shreve having classes with and becoming good friends with. I enjoyed my freshman year, but like anyone I was more than excit- ed when summer arrived. But, sum- mer didn’t seem to last too long because before I knew it I found myself in tenth grade. Tenth grade wasn’t bad. But, it wasn’t my favorite year either. While I was in ninth grade I was very shy and would barely talk, but by the time I was in tenth grade I was talking more. However, I also made some new friends who turned out to be for the worst and that year was nothing but drama. I was glad to see the drama end. My junior year proved to be the hardest. But with classes like American History ( I am horrible with history) and Advanced Math, who wouldn’t have their plates full? However, I worked my way through that year, with all passing grades might I add, and was looking forward to my final year of high school. And now, here I am; writing my last article for The Enterprise and enjoying my last few days at Shreve. My senior year is definitely my best year. I have had so much fun just hanging out with friends and having a class load that isn’t too strenuous, excluding Physics of course. Captain Shreve closes its doors to one class and opens them to another.

A Farewell to Shreveby Laurie Basco

The parties are starting, thegraduation kits have been bought, andnow we are picking up our cap andgowns. Yes, it is graduation time andI can hardly believe that in just a mat-ter of days I will be officially out ofschool and then just a few weeks and Iwill graduate.

The classes are slowly comingto an end, and the words “you areexempt to the final” are great to hear.Yes, it is finally all sinking in, I will beout of here soon and moving on to col-lege.

I am beyond excited to begraduating, who wouldn’t be? But, apart of me is very sad because I will beleaving so much behind. I will beleaving an environment that I haveworked so hard at becoming use to,and more importantly all of myfriends.

That is going to be the mainthing I miss, my friends and all thegood times we have had together.

My years here at Shreveseemed to have flown by. I literallyfind myself asking “Where has all thetime gone?”

For me, coming to Shreve wasan adventure in itself. I didn’t growup going to a public school, instead Ispent kindergarten through eighthgrade attending a private, Catholicschool. Up until my seventh gradeyear I, like the majority of my class-mates, wanted to go to Loyola, but bymy seventh grade year I knew I need-ed a new environment. My olderbrother was already attending Shreve,so Shreve seemed to be the bestchoice. And so, my eighth grade yearI decided I would go to Shreve.

I was pretty happy to be get-

ting away from the private schoollifestyles, that is until the day camethat I had to actually go to Shreve. Iwas nervous, none of my friendswould be at Shreve so I knew no one, except my brother. Camp Gator wasthe first official day that I stepped footon the Shreve campus. I can still hearmy father lecturing me on all the goodreasons for attending Camp Gator.

If it weren’t for Camp Gator

and all those pesky little “icebreakers”I probably wouldn’t of had manyfriends my first day of ninth grade.Camp Gator did introduce me to whatwould be my group of friends allfreshman year.

My freshman year was mainlya learning experience. I had to get useto so many new things, lockers in thehalls, lockers with combinations, classes with different people, just a

I enjoyed my freshman year, but like anyone I was more than excit-ed when summer arrived. But, sum-mer didn’t seem to last too longbecause before I knew it I foundmyself in tenth grade.

Tenth grade wasn’t bad. But,it wasn’t my favorite year either. While I was in ninth grade I was veryshy and would barely talk, but by thetime I was in tenth grade I was talkingmore. However, I also made somenew friends who turned out to be forthe worst and that year was nothingbut drama. I was glad to see the dramaend.

History of the “Enterprise”Captain Henry Miller Shreve, steamboat pilot of the 1800s and namesake of our

high school, is famous for his efforts in opening the inland waterways of America. Not sofamous, however, is Shreve’s first steamboat, the “Enterprise,” and its role in American his-tory.

Wary of the Fulton-Livingston monopoly over trade on the Mississippi River,Shreve realized the necessity of building a superior steam vessel that could outperform theexisting ones. As a result, Shreve formed a partnership with entrepreneur Daniel French todesign such a boat. The result of their work was the steamboat “Enterprise.” On Dec. 1, 1814,she left on her maiden voyage with 29-year-old Shreve as her captain.

This first voyage was no leisurely trip. A precious cargo of munitions and supplieswas desperately needed by General Andrew Jackson’s troops in New Orleans. The long tripdown the Mississippi was a success, and within two weeks the cargo was safely delivered toJackson’s camp. Shreve’s fearless attitude and the dependability of the “Enterprise” were cru-cial factors in the victory at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812.

Now, as the student newspaper of Captain Shreve High School, The Enterprisestrives to emulate the fearlessness and dependability of Shreve and his ship in reporting thenews important to you, the students of Captain Shreve.
