Let’s Celebrate Grandparents DayFriday, September 6, 2:00PMLet’s celebrate and appreciate all the joy and wisdom that grandparents bring to our lives! We will celebrate with pie and ice cream! Senior Center members are welcome to bring their grandchildren.

Get Your Annual Flu VaccineSeptember 18, 12:00PM–5:00PM September 19, 9:00AM–12:00PMAll older adults are encouraged each year to receive a flu shot to help protect their health. The Senior Center will be hosting a Flu Shot Clinic for members and people with chronic medical problems. Walgreens’ trained pharmacists will be on-site to provide vaccinations. This clinic is free if you bring your Medicare/Medi-Cal (Part D) or other insurance cards. The cost for non-insurance covered shots is approximately $35- $57. On both clinic days Walgreens will have a limited supply of vouchers for those who do not participate in Medicare/Medi-Cal.

Fall Bingo Marathon Saturday, October 5Doors open at 11:30AM, and play begins at 1:00PMJoin in the fun at this year’s Fall Bingo Marathon! The marathon includes 20 games with 3-5 special games scattered throughout. A session pack is $10 per player (additional packs are $8 for the same player). Special games are $1 each per card. Players cannot split or share packs. Games have cash prizes and amounts are determined by the number of packs sold. A Snack Bar is available for lunch and goodies before and during the marathon. This event is open to ages 18 and up.

Pumpkin Carving ContestTuesday & Wednesday, October 29 & 30 Show off your pumpkin carving skills at the Barbara Lee Senior Center’s 4th Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest! Design categories include Most Detailed, Most Creative, Best Halloween-themed, and Spookiest. Start thinking of your design and sign-up at the Front Desk by Thursday, October 24. Carving will take place on Tuesday, October 29. Senior Center members can cast their votes on Wednesday, October 30, and winners will be announced at the end of the day.

Gratitude Week November 5-8 What are you grateful for? How do you express your gratitude for others? During this week leading up to Veterans Day, we will have Gratitude Stations set up where you can create a card to express your gratitude to someone who has served or is still serving in the Armed Forces. We will provide the materials. You can give the card to someone you know personally or leave it with staff to be sent to an Armed Forces distribution center.

Become a volunteer through the “Friendly Visitors” ProgramSoon the Barbara Lee Senior will launch the “Friendly Visitors” program. This program matches volunteer visitors to eligible participants who, due to health and mobility restrictions are losing touch with their community. This service attempts to enhance the client’s quality of life and helps to improve their health and independence by providing a friend who will assist in activating social skills and maintain community contacts. PRESENTATIONSLearn about Diabetes Tuesday, September 10, 9:30AMStanford researchers will provide an overview of the causes of diabetes, along with risk factors and associated diseases. They will discuss how diabetes is typically diagnosed by healthcare providers and dive into current research being done in the field. They will talk about prevention methods that can be used to reduce the risk of developing this disease. Please sign up at the Front Desk no later than the September 9.

Fitness Center OrientationFriday, September 20 & October 18, 1:00PMLet the Senior Center help you stay on track with your health goals. The cost to use the Fitness Center is just $1.50 per visit, sold in increments of 5, 10, 15 & 20 visits. If you’re not familiar with the equipment in the Fitness Center, we have free Fitness Room Orientations on the third Friday of each month at 1:00PM. A Personal Trainer will go over the proper use of all the equipment in the room with you. Our Certified Personal Trainers can also assist you in your fitness needs. A trainer can meet with you to talk about your needs and goals, put together a workout schedule, and help train you in the Fitness Center. POLST (Provider Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) and ACP (Advanced Care Plan)Monday, September 30, 1:00PMDoes your family know what your wishes are? Have you discussed your end of life options? If you do not decide what you want, other people will decide for you, and you may find yourself in a situation you don’t want to be in. An Advanced Care Plan and a POLST form protect your wishes and enable you to disseminate that information to the people who will speak on your behalf. The POLST is a medical order and is honored by Emergency Response Teams and medical professionals. If you do not know the ins and outs of these documents, you should attend this seminar. Please sign up at the Front Desk no later than the day prior.

Cancer 101 Tuesday, October 1, 9:30AMStanford researchers will be providing an overview of the current understanding of what causes cancer, along with known risk factors. They will go over symptoms that may result from cancer, and how it is diagnosed. Lurie College of Education, supervised by a licensed and certified Audiologist, will be available at the Barbara Lee Senior Center to give a hearing test in an informal environment. The California Telephone Access Program will be simultaneously hosting an equipment distribution event, where you can receive your equipment at no cost on the same day in a convenient location.

Medicare Explained by Sourcewise Tuesday, October 29, 10:00AMSourcewise collaborates with Santa Clara County, state, and local networks to provide a streamlined approach to service and support systems. The Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) is through the Aging & Adult Services section of Santa Clara County, and provides high quality, cost efficient, nutritious meals to seniors. The Milpitas Senior Center is one of 36 serving sites throughout the County. The Senior Nutrition Program is open to all seniors over the age of 60. There is a suggested contribution of $3.00 per person per meal, however, no eligible senior is ever denied because of a failure or inability to make a contribution. There is a $8 fee for guests under the age of 60. Membership at the Senior Center is not required to attend the lunch program.

Shuttle Service to the Senior CenterThe Barbara Lee Senior Center free shuttle service offers ADA accessible transportation to the Senior Center and back home again for its members. Door-to-door service to the Senior Center and back home again is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from approximately 8:30AM-2:00PM. This service is intended for participants with limited or no access to transportation. For more details and to register, please call (408) 586-3400. Eligibility Requirements: Must be a Current Senior Center member and live within the Milpitas city limits. Must make reservations in advance.

Senior Adults Legal Assistance2nd & 4th Wednesdays 10:00AM-12:00PM (by appointment only)SALA is a non-profit elder law office whose mission is to support older persons in their efforts to live safely, independently, non-institutionalized, and with dignity. Established in 1973, SALA provides free legal services and community education to Santa Clara County residents who are age 60 or older. There is no income eligibility qualification to use SALA’s services. SALA’s attorney staff provides a range of legal services from simple advice/referrals to comprehensive legal representation. SALA’s caseload consists of legal matters that private attorneys typically do not handle and that have a great impact on elders most in need in our community.

Barbara Lee Senior Center Memberships Milpitas’ Barbara Lee Senior Center is for adults 50+. A Senior Center Membership is required to participate in all programs (unless otherwise noted, such as Lunch Program or Bingo). Membership fees are $12 for Milpitas residents and $30 for non-residents. Milpitas residents must show two proofs of residency for the discounted rate.
