From the Director Vol. 11 No. 3 March 2015 “The time is always right to do what is right.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. February is a busy month at the senior centers. Valentine’s Day and Black History month provide themes to build activities, trips and events around. Valentine’s Day provides the usual opportunity to express our love for the important people in our lives – friends, family, church members. It is often a sad time for those who have lost so many they love. Black History month is a time for awareness, pride in accom- plishments as well as celebration. One of my favorite events, cele- brating it’s sixth anniversary this month, is the African - American Fashion Show. Credit for this event goes to some very special ladies. They had the idea, worked hard to put the show together and created an event that is anticipat- ed each year by everyone at the center. The room is usually packed with folks to see these ladies (and gentlemen) in articles of clothing that are not only beautiful but often have special meaning to the wearers. One of the models creates stunning out- fits for herself and granddaughter each year. Information on Black History is shared in a fun trivia format and African themed prizes are distributed. The pride in their heritage and history is inspiring and I thank them for sharing that with all of us. On an overseas flight, a lawyer and an older man were in adjoining seats. The lawyer asked the senior if he’d like to play a little game. The older man

was tired, and he told the lawyer he only wanted to sleep. But the lawyer insisted the game was a lot of fun.“Here’s how it works,” he said. “I’ll ask you a question. If you can’t come up

with the answer, you have to give me a dollar. Then it’s your turn to ask meone. But if I can’t answer it, I have to give you $20.”

The senior figured if he just got this over with, maybe he could get somesleep. So he agreed to play.

The first question from the lawyer was “How far apart are the earth and themoon?”

The senior stayed completely silent, reached for a dollar, and gave it to thelawyer. Then he said, “My turn. What walks upstairs backward and comesdownstairs forward?”

The lawyer was stumped. He thought and thought. He tried to remember allthe riddles he knew. He searched every corner of his brain.

He even cheated and asked the flight attendants and other passengers. Finally he gave up. He woke up the older man and gave him a twenty. The

senior stuffed the twenty in his coat and went immediately back to sleep. The lawyer couldn’t stand it. He woke up the older man and said, “I have to

know. What walks upstairs backward and comes downstairs forward?”The senior got out his wallet, gave the lawyer a dollar, and went back to sleep.

Nurse’s NotesBy Pamela B. Vining, R.N.When it comes to aging graceful-

ly, most of us already know what todo. We’ve heard it over and over.Exercise, eat right, get a goodnight’s sleep, and keep a positiveattitude. Just as important, don’twait to start taking care of yourself– start now.

The good news is that the sameregimen that helps your heart alsobenefits your brain, mood, metabo-lism, and skin. Aging gracefullyisn’t rocket science. It just requiresenergy, stamina, and motivation.

It’s best to exercise about 45 min-utes, three to four times a week. This will keep your heart youngwhile improving your figure, moodand brainpower. Eat lots of fruitsand vegetables, and cook with oliveoil instead of butter. Getting lessthan 6.5 hours of sleep at night putsyou at risk for a host of physicaland mental problems, so get a goodlong night’s rest.

The truth is, everyone will growold at one point or another, it alldepends on what you do about it.Now is the time to get rid of emo-tional baggage that stresses youout, and control your blood pres-sure. Take control of yourself andwhat’s inside. What’ll keep you

younger looking now is your atti-tude.

Treat people with respect and theymay show you the same kindnessthat you need someday. Alwayskeep your future in mind. Takecharge and create a future that youwant. Yes, you need to grow oldwith love, and embrace eachmoment of your life. Don’t livewith regret weighing you down. There may be ways to stop aging, but these solutions only last solong.

As long as you maintain healthyhabits and live in moderation, youcan certainly say that you’ve doneyour part. Perhaps a simple tweakin the way you live life can do a lotof good down the line.

Also, you must never take yourhealth for granted. Eat right andexercise regularly. You probablywon’t be as active as you oncewere, but there’s nothing wrongwith that.

The important thing is that youmake sure you do something foryourself every single day. You’lldefinitely continue to enjoy thebenefits of your lifestyle in theyears to come.
