The Community

The District

The town of Seminole was established in 1906, named after the Seminole Indian Tribe who inhabited this region after signing the government treaty in the mid 1800's. It was incorporated as a city on December 26, 1924. In the mid-1920's when oil was discovered in the Seminole area, the population exploded and swelled to 40,000 people. Black Gold flowed from wells 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hotels and businesses sprung up everywhere. Now those days are gone, but not forgotten. The boomers left a legacy here that will never die. By the giving to organizations and museums, the past is preserved for future generations to enjoy

While Seminole remains a viable part of Oklahoma’s Oil Industry, gains in Manufacturing have bolstered our local economy without detracting from our landscape. The major employers of the city are diverse and include Wrangler, Blue Wave Boats, Seminole State College, Enviro Systems and Bar S. Our little part of the planet is bursting with activity designed to stimulate the mind, strengthen the spirit and develop one’s character.

Seminole is located at the intersection of US 377, SH 99 and SH 9, 10 miles south of I-40. We are a city of about 7,000 hearty souls. From major chain restaurants to local diners and other creative mom-and-pop establishments, small town America lives and breathes in Seminole. It is an integral part of our make-up that reinforces our less-hectic lifestyle. If you find yourself in need of a little faster pace, we’re an easy drive to our state’s two largest metropolitan areas – Oklahoma City is 60 miles to the west while Tulsa is 87 miles to our east. In Seminole, we enjoy the best of both worlds.

In Seminole, we welcome you to walk the street at night, fish at dawn, golf in the afternoon and get to know your neighbor. Additionally, we are proud to be home to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum: The museum is on ten acres and 42,000 square feet, and has an outdoor play/maze area offering hours of educational exploration through interactive exhibits. In 2007, The American Automobile Association recognized the museum with its highest Gem rating as a tourist attraction. The Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum is a unique adventure and a “must-see/feel/hear/touch/smell” experience. Just remember that Friday nights in the Fall mean Chieftain Football and we’ll all get along just fine.

Alliance Health - Seminole Medical Center is a 32-bed, 12.4 million dollar state-of-the-art facility with 14 acute care rooms, four intensive care beds and 12 skilled nursing rooms. Built in 1999, the 64,000 square-foot complex is located on 20 acres and serves about 28,000 Seminole County residents. The J.D. Wood Clinic, physician offices and a specialty clinic are located within the hospital. Two family practice clinics are located adjacent to the Medical Center.
