Selection of materials
The properties associated with a certain material are of
key importance when it comes to deciding on which plastics
to use within the area of tank and apparatus building.
The following pages provide further information on the mate-
rials used by SIMONA.
B&A_gb_rz.indd 9 21.04.09 16:36
Material properties
Applications within the field of tank and apparatus building
are dependent on materials with particularly high perform-
ance characteristics. After all, the challenges posed by
chemicals, corrosion, temperature fluctuations and structural
stress are formidable.
With a comprehensive portfolio ranging from PE, PP and PVC
to PVDF and E-CTFE, SIMONA offers the perfect solution to
meet virtually any requirement.

High-density polyethylene
(PE-HD)
Alongside its outstanding pro-
cessability, PE-HD displays
high chemical resistance and
offers strength and rigidity
within a temperature range of
between –50 °C and +80 °C.
Owing to different creep proper-
ties, SIMONA® high-density
poly ethylene materials are di-
vided into the three categories
PE-HD, PE 80 and PE 100.
High-molecular-weight
poly ethylene (PE- HMW)
PE-HMW combines high strength
with good rigidity, as well as
allowing efficient processing.
The temperature range is from
–100 °C to +80 °C. PE-HML
500 offers good chemical res-
istance and superior stress
crack re s istance in relation to
a wide range of media.
Polypropylene (PP -H/PP- C)
Compared to PE, polypropylene
offers increased stiffness, espe-
cially in the upper temperature
range (up to +100 °C). Among
its key characteristics are high
chemical resistance and favoura-
ble results in long-term testing
when exposed to many organic
and inorganic media, even at
high temperatures. PP-C can be
deployed in a temperature
range from –20 °C to +80 °C.
Polyvinylchloride (PVC- U)
PVC-U offers high strength and
stiffness. Its temperature range
is between 0 °C and +60 °C.
PVC-U also displays good resist-
ance when exposed to organic
and inorganic chemicals as well
as oxidising media.
Post-chlorinated polyvinyl-
chloride (PVC- C)
Owing to its increased chlorine
content, PVC-C offers outstand-
ing chemical resistance, particu-
larly to acids, alkalis and salts.
As a result, it is a perfect choice
for applications associated with
the chemical process industry.
The temperature range is from
–40 °C to +95 °C.
Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF)
PVDF is a partially fluorinated
high-performance plastic that
can be deployed at temperatures
ranging from –30 °C to +140 °C;
it is resistant to the majority of
organic and inorganic media.
Ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene
(E -CTFE)
As a partially fluorinated high-
performance plastic, E-CTFE
offers a wide temperature range
from –40 °C to +150 °C. In
addition, E-CTFE displays an
extremely high level of chemical
resistance, which includes the
alkaline range.

SIMONA® Semi-finished plastics for linings and composite construction
SIMONA offers a wide range of materials specially designed
for linings used in steel and concrete containers as well
as for thermoplastic and GRP composite engineering. While
PVC can be directly bonded with reaction resins, fabric
backings are required to create a firm bond for polyolefins
(PE, PP) and fluorinated plastics (PVDF, E-CTFE).

Traction-adhesive strength
Average values in MPa
(from internal quality control)
(Palatal A 410 = unsaturated poly-ester resin)
Result: The values measured in
the case of SIMONA® materials
are superior to those required by
DIN. Therefore, the operational
safety reserves associated with
these materials are considerably
higher.
Shear test
in accordance with BS 4994
(British Standard) based on
DIN 65148
For the dimensioning and design
of vessels and tanks in rein-
forced plastic, a minimum bond
strength of 7.0 MPa is specified
for liner construction at an ambi-
ent temperature of 23 °C.
Shear strength
Average values in MPa
(from internal quality control)
(Palatal A 410 = unsaturated poly-ester resin)
Result: SIMONA® materials
achieve excellent values, guaran-
teeing outstanding bond strength
of the liner construction.
Temperature range
The fabric backings on SIMONA®
materials bond firmly to the base
material, even at higher tempera-
tures. The following upper oper-
ating temperatures can be speci-
fied, irrespective of the resin
system used:
 PE-HWU-SK 60 °C
 PP-C-PK/PP-DWU-SK
AlphaPlus® 85 °C
 PVC-CAW/PVC-MZ 60 °C
 PVDF-SK 80 °C
 PVDF-GK/E-CTFE-GK 100 °C
Adhesion-promoting systems
SIMONA supplies sheets with
three different adhesion-promot-
ing systems:
 SK – Thermoplastic polyester
backings
 GK – Glass-fibre backings
 PK – Polymer backings
These fabric backings form
an optimal mechanical bridge
between the lining and the base
material requiring protection
against corrosion. The following
test procedures provide informa-
tion on the quality of the bond.
Traction-adhesive strength test
based on DIN 53766-1
The minimum bond strength
between the lining material
and the supporting laminate is
generally defined by the client’s
company standards. The follow-
ing guide values are assumed
for the minimum bond strengths
in the traction-adhesive strength
test (at an ambient temperature
of 23 °C):
 PVC/GF-UP 7 MPa
 PVDF/GF-UP 5 MPa
 PP/GF-UP 3.5 MPa
 PE/GF-UP 3.5 MPa
(GF-UP = glass-fibre-reinforced
unsaturated polyester resin)

SIMONA® Semi-finished plastics for explosive atmospheres (ATEX)
Materials used in production equipment which is deployed in
potentially explosive atmospheres must display pro perties
that protect them against explosion, in compliance with Euro-
pean directives ATEX 94/9/EG and ATEX 137. SIMONA’s
electrically conductive semi-finished products provide protec-
tion against static charging, thereby reducing the risk of
explosion. SIMONA offers professional assistance in applica-
tions technology as well as training with regard to the

On June 1, 2007, the European chemicalslaw which had applied up to that date was replaced by the socalled REACh Regulation (EU Regula tion 1907/2006/EC). REACh stands for Registration, Evaluation, Author-isation and Restriction of Chemicals.
One of the rules specified by the REACh Regulation is that all substances (chemicals and preparations) which are manufactured in the EU or are imported to the EU have to be preregis-tered and registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The REACh Regulation applies to chemicals andpreparations. Polymers are explicitly ex-cluded from registration and evaluation (as per Article 2 Para. 9).
The SIMONA® range of products comprises semifinished parts, pipes and fittings which are made solely of polymer materials. Therefore, they are not subject to the REACh Regulation. As a plastics processing com-pany, we cannot have our products registered, nor are we obliged to.
Within the scope of the supply chain described by REACh, plastics processing companies are socalled “downstream users”. One of our obligations as down-stream users is to verify the fact that our own suppliers handle the raw materials delivered to us in a REACh-compliant man-ner. We met our obligations within this area during the pre-registration phase from
1.6. - 30.11.2008. If the availability of indi-vidual raw materials is limited by REACh in future, we will switch to REACh-compliant alternatives.
In addition, we are obliged to disclose infor-mation about the constituents of our prod-ucts: we confirm that our products do not contain any substances in concentrations of > 0.1% (w/w) which are on the candidate list (Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern, SVHC) issued by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
As downstream users, we are enjoined to inform our suppliers how the raw materi-als delivered to us are used (in our case: manufacture of semi-finished plastics, pipes, fittings and finished products by means of extrusion, pressing and injection moulding) so that the use becomes a so-called “identi-fied use”. In order to improve the exchange of information along the supply chain, it is advantageous to also receive information about how our customers subject our prod-ucts to further processing. Please feel free to pass this information on to us by contacting us at [email protected].

SIMCHEM 6.0 – Chemical
resistance data on CD-ROM
SIMCHEM 6.0 is a reliable and
comprehensive guide when it
comes to determining the chem-
ical resistance of materials
used in our products.
It lists more than 3,000 media
and proprietary products.
Additionally, SIMCHEM provides
extensive information about
our products and materials, as
well as outlining SIMONA’s
business activities. An extensive database on the chemical resistance of SIMONA® materials, featuring more than 3,000 listed substances.
The sixth edition of SIMCHEM has
been fully reviewed and is an
important guide for your day-to-day
operations. Please be advised
that all data presented in this ver-
sion reflects our scope of
knowledge at the point of publi-
cation. The latest version of
SIMCHEM is based on findings
from immersion testing as
part of which test specimens were
subjected to different tempe-
ratures in the medium in question,
free from external stresses.
The data derived from testing is
complemented by case study
reports, recommendations by raw
material manufacturers as well
as extensive data relating to
standards, directives and guide-
lines.
