Introduction

Introduction In the new academic year 2013-2014, NSS IIT Delhi set out to create a paradigm shift. A shift from its

perception just as a curriculum requirement, to that of a large family of enthusiastic volunteers who feel

a sense of belonging for this organization. This year, we enrolled a record 523 number of freshmen in

NSS, and are constantly working hard to absorb them in our activities. In the first semester, not only did

we collaborate with old and new NGOs for creating volunteering opportunities, but we initiated various

projects of our own. The Bhatti Mines project, Munirka project & Mess Workers’ project were

refurbished and the initiative against substance abuse was flagged off. With the aim of creating long-

term and self-sustainable models on the campus, the Bicycle Sharing system and paper reuse policies

were visualized realistically for the first time. Another objective in focus this semester was of social

technical innovation; to tap the technological potential of IIT students at solving social problems, like

developing solar lighting for slums.

The Safe Hands smartphone app developed by Stree and NSS won the prestigious Nina Saxena

Excellence in Technology Award instituted by IIT Kharagpur. NSS spread its reach further by a strong

online presence. We organized a plethora of online campaigns and activities: Organ Donation campaign,

celebrating International Day of the Girl Child and World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, et al. This

semester, efforts were also made at standardizing various NSS projects, like development of a central

curriculum repository for teaching projects and a database of social awareness tools like posters, videos,

articles and documents.

Besides the usual volunteering opportunities, we organized workshops like the Liter of Light workshop

for solar lighting, panel discussions like Freedom Caravan: Why is India poor and screening of various

movies. We organized an urban exposure trip and a trip to Surajpur Wetlands. We also undertook

qualitative survey work on women safety in campus (for Stree), smoking habits survey and an energy

audit survey of the whole campus, which have all rendered useful results being used in our initiatives.

This time, we tried newer methods to connect with our volunteers. Our blog was redesigned, and the

outreach of our Facebook page increased twofold in just a month. We started the SMS channel and

created the NSS app (currently under beta testing), so that volunteers are regularly informed about our

activities and events. Continuing with our green efforts and reducing use of physical posters, we

encouraged installation of whiteboards in the academic area for making event announcements.

In conclusion, it would be right to say that NSS IIT Delhi has expanded in all directions this semester.

We have taken care of mass opinions and encouraged higher involvement of permanent volunteers in our

projects. Although we still fall short of our target of generating 40,000 hours each year, our primary

focus remains on achieving this feat, very soon.

NSS Initiatives

Initiative Against Substance Abuse Overview Smoking, alcoholism and substance abuse are common (and unfortunately shrugged-under-the-carpet) among the students at IIT Delhi. This initiative seeks to facilitate students to accept, get away and keep away from the same.

Goals Achieved ● After background research on substance abuse, 3 trips were organized to various de-addiction and

rehabilitation centers in Delhi ● Posters prepared and put up in various hostels with anonymous helpline numbers ● A Smoking Habits Survey undertaken in October ● 11 students who needed help identified by means of the survey were brought in touch with the

student counsellor ● Interesting trends and opinions raised in the survey, like a strong reaction against professors

smoking in public

The Way Ahead ● Ensuring Survey-analysis presentation prepared to be presented to the administration soon ● A talk/discussion along with the Student Counsellor early next semester ● Strong targeting of the incoming batch of students, to make the campus nicotine-free

Mess Workers’ Teaching Project Overview This teaching project aims to help our mess workers by providing them vocational education, computer education, and practical skills (like filling forms, reading newspaper, etc.).

Goals Achieved ● Volunteering continued during the first half of the semester in boys hostels, and throughout the

semester in Kailash ● Activities involved are vocational teaching, basic Computers, Maths and English

Challenges Faced ● Lack of interest of mess workers and lack of curriculum ● Discontinuity due to holidays and examinations, change of shift timings, rotation policy

The Way Ahead ● Expansion is tough due to multiple teaching sites, need to shift to classroom teaching at a single site

with only interested workers ● Regularize teaching by dividing mess workers into groups assigned to a volunteer ● Involvement of administration to add to the reliability factor ● Few workers are registered under National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), so next sem we will

be following their schedule

Munirka Teaching Project

Overview To provide help to kids of Munirka, but by instilling in them love for education. Extra-curricular activities are organized from time to time to appreciate & enhance the talent of these kids.

Goals Achieved ● Continuous volunteering ensured during the semester on weekends ● Increased the number of kids to 25 ● Improved community interaction and gained their trust to some extent ● Organized painting, origami, rakhi making sessions etc. and a cleanliness & plantation drive

Challenges faced ● Backlog of kids and varied level and

temperament of kids ● Many kids going to paid tuitions

directly affects our importance

The Way Ahead ● Regularize teaching by dividing kids

into groups assigning each a volunteer ● Planning activity based learning

Solar Lighting Project Overview This project has been inspired by the Liter of Light project that started in Philippines. We started with the objective of creating Solar Light Bulbs, by using 2 liter PET bottles, purified water and bleaching powder that work equivalent to a 50W bulb during daytime, and are inserted in holes drilled in corrugated tin roofs.

Goals Achieved ● Prototype Development: Over the last summers, a

prototype was constructed after various experiments; testing for different levels and concentrations of bleach solution.

● SolarLite Workshop: A workshop was conducted for volunteers, in association with Liter of Light, India and My Shelter Foundation. The idea was demonstrated and a number of models were made.

● Implementation in Munirka slums: Prototypes were installed in three different homes in Munirka. The installation received a great response with other residents raring to get solar bulbs installed in their homes as well.

The Way Ahead The installation on thatched and cement roofs didn’t work due to leakage problems. We plan to

work only on tin roofs from now on. Since tin roofs aren’t much used these days, we are now designing solar lanterns that wouldn’t

require drilling holes in the roof.

Cloth Collection Drives ● We conduct these drives just after

the majors and the material collected is sent to Goonj, an NGO which gives these things to the needy after proper treatment in return for community welfare work

● The material collected ranges from simple clothes to toys, medicines, copies, books and other items of use

● This year in addition to these collection drives, we conducted a special drive to help the Uttarakhand Flood victims, where the collected material was sent to the victims with the help of Goonj

envisaging a long-term social opportunity during the semester breaks. Students are also free to choose any other NGO to intern with

● The internships ranged from Rural internships, to policy research internships, or even social entrepreneurship related internships

● Most students reported a nice and learning experience during the course of the internship

● A report, pictures, feedback from the involved NGO and a post-internship interview scrutinized the validity of the internships

● For the first time, we floated our own internships for the month of December 2013 in the form of a Teaching Projects Internship, which involved exposure to all of our teaching projects for 10 volunteers over a period of 15 days, and 5 projects running under the Social Innovation Cell of NSS IITD
