In the course on colour and composition, we were told to play with line using three principle of design (i.e harmony, rhthym and contrast). I played with elements of design such as line (Horizontal, Vertical and Diagonal). I learnt importance of line as useful and versatile graphic device that is made to function in both visual and verbal ways. Lines can be combined with other lines to create textures and patterns. The use of line in combination results in the development of form and value, which are other elements of design. I studied combination of lines for development of form and value, and to

create textures .I fiddled with principles of design such as balance, gradation of size and direction to produce linear perspective as well as gradation of colour from warm to cool and tone from dark to light to produce aerial perspective and to add interest and movement to a shape. I studied contrast by putting opposing elements e.g. opposite colours, contrast in tone or value - light / dark, contrast in direction - horizontal / vertical , contrast in size - thick / thin, etc.

We were given four different shapes like circle, triangle, square and parallelogram and had to make form within the frame which can shows solid or linear object. I explored many forms and at times i used to feel so restrained as we had to take any three shapes and study on it. While making, many forms were looking familiar form. I tried to make forms which were inspired from nature. The form which was got selected were some of the shape of whale (whale is a wild and huge humped backed creature and their teeth have sharp edges) insert inside the circle than after further exploring ,the form character came out. Than we had to play with selected form having color interactions in mind in different orientation inside the square in foreground and background using different colour principles such as complementary, adjacent, feminine, striking, primary, secondary, gradient colours, gray scale, etc. Than explored the gradation effect in form inside or outside the shape. I used shades and tones of a particular colour with the selected form to create different shapes and give illusion of 3 D effect.

Than came, experiment with 3D application of selected form. Then I explored the application of selected form by designing different products of day to day use e.g. Chair, soap case, foot mat, shirt button, tricycle for kids.I also designed posters using the selected form and colour gradients keeping in mind the type and size of font used for title.

This course on colour andf form has reiterated how simple elements and principles of design such as different types of lines, shades and tones of colours and their combination can be used to create different shapes, forms, textures, patterns, 2D and 3D effect, etc.

Letter Design

My experience with letter design started by introducing my name in my regional language. Been born and bought up in Delhi, my mother toungue was “HINDI”. So, i explored my name by giving different strokes by different mediums. Though i learned “URDU” in an elementary stage. Than we learned making storkes like straight, diagonal, curves, etc. with the help of Rib pen. The purpose was to undertsand the importance of strokes in letter design.Than we were introduced about the importance of typeface (ie. serif and sans serifs). We learned about the anatomy of typeface also. Than we were divided in group to learn more about the typeface, was teamed up with other 4 classmate to learn about importance of serif typeface.

In the beginning, everyone was wondering why Tarun is asking about our character from each one of us., than our name was exchanged on a piece of paper by each of us. I got “Dorje as a humorous” and were told to portray his character in any typeface which we chose. Than i chose many type which match his character and started fondling with his name. At times, Dorje was coming out with serious type, slowly i was able to portray him as a HUMOROUS.While scribbing with his name “Chamspa Rinchen Dorje”, i tried to give importance to his character “Humorous” by showing :“J” stands for “Joker” .

“e” as a character of laughing with stomach hold on.

Change the orientation of each word.

Showed Spun in his name.

Showed continous flow than after a while there is a break to

laugh on hid jokes.

Showed his ability to grab attention around him.

We were told to select any existing product, cost not exceeding RS.10. and from any other product, of a different sector and using the name of the first product, create a logotype in Black and White for the second product. I analyze on the given brand “Lays” about his company, logo, and his meaning, etc. and also studied about Contraceptive pills. Than i figure out the exact meaning of contraceptive pill, variety of medicines available here and which one is commonly used and known by common people. Than i started making logotype for Contraceptive pills as Lay’s according to the features of Contraceptive pills.

Studies of characteristics of Lay’s shown as Contraceptive Pills:S represents the body of a modern woman who is

confident, is in command of her life and can take de-

cisions about when to have children as lay’s has put

her anxieties and fears about undesired pregnancy to

We were assigned to know about the meaning and importance of “Design” in our life. As per my understanding, I define design as a overall process, purpose, planning or functionality of the object and are done for the customer satisfaction. Design has pervaded into our day to day life. It affects simple goods used by grass roots people such as stapler, dustbin, punching machine. water bottle, etc. to complex electronic goods such as mobile phone, TV, washing machine, refrigerators, computers, etc. As a designer from a common man as in addition to being user friendly, keep in mind the target audience for whom the product is being designed and look at other components such as style, elegance, dimension, use, etc. The whole approach has become very inclusive and dynamic and my mind is active 24x7 as my whole perspective and viewpoint involves careful observation and is very analytical and critical.

Design overview

We were given an assignment to introduce our self and the product we associate or like. I introduce about myself by stating good and bad adjective like Simple, Sensitive, Jovial, Helpful, Honest, Hard worker, Stubborn at times ;“Quiet person when meet new people like a rat, when get open I’m like a cat”; Loves cheering my friends with my dance like chimp famously known as “Dancing Chimp” small kid at heart, loves exploring small - small thing whether its gizmo, place, food, etc. and a bad habit of taking tension for no reason. The product i relate and like is Laptop as it kills time, User friendly, Reliable, Explorable, Simple, Easy to carry, Elegant and Self sufficient.

I were assigned to make combination of palmtop and mobile and the games for 7 - 12 years kid in rural and urban area which can be afford by their parents. I studied on variety of mobile and their features available in the market which we fascinates kids to have this kind of gizmos in their pocket and they can easily associated it with them. Than i set my target to add those application in mini plamtop which would’nt affect them were Message, Contacts, Games, Calendar, Calculator, Clock, Dictionary, MS Office, GPS, Global time zone, Reminder, Notes and FM radio, Regional languageNitro Notebook: Learning system that helps children develop maths, science, and language abilities, it is aimed for the age of 6-12yrs old kids. Camera. Video, Web and Bluetooth were not added and have been avoided so that they cannot be misused. I introduced memory game for kids so that they can observe and gain knowledge of words. Features were in simplified form, touch screen, regional languages softwares were installed for those people who can easily communicate, changeable mini plamtop cover which has cartoon character on it.

This is an example of the indirect approach. The overpowering

headache is reduced by the balm to insignificant proportions,

depicted by the size of the letters, followed by relief from pain,

shown by laughter.

This commercial uses witty representation by reversing the

proverb “Easier said than done.” The effect of the glue is so

instant that its action is faster than words.

Word And Image

In this course, we were introduced with the meaning like Syntax ; Pragmatics and Semantics. All these words were new to us, so it was traveling out of mind and we looked for meaning. Than we got a bit clear vision about these meanings. All these words has lot to play with word and image ; as it plays vital roles. for example : Photographs of Apple stands for Apple (Direct Approach) ; Smoke reminds fire (Indirect Approach), etc.We were than assigned to collect images which had integration of word and image and present it. So according to our understanding, we started our process by collecting images which has direct, indirect, complementary, metaphors, etc. behind it.

This advertisement follows the direct approach by drawing a

metaphoric parallel between the relationship between the dog

and that between the child and the network and the customer,

both faithfully serving.

Eric Kessel founder of Kesselskramer, who showed amazing work of their projects that include brands of Audi, Heineken, Nike, Levis, English TV Chanel-5, Ben, Diesel, Hans Brinkers youth hostels, low budget hotels in Amsterdam and the Dutch postal service.

Apart from Kyoorius Design Yatra, we enjoyed the amazing raining weather out there. I enjoyed the ride with Neha to Arambor Beach along with my batchmate.Enjoyed the Scenic beauty of Goa beach, tourists playing out there. kids making castle out there, Goan selling jewellery accessories, people enjoying Goan food. It was an overall different experience for me.

Break for Kyoorius Design Yatra, Goa............

Kyoorius Design yatra 2008, held at Kala Academy Campal, Panjim, Goa in September 13-15, 2008, was an attempt to provide a communications platform for the design and creative fraternity of India and abroad. It provided a space where the creative think-tanks of India and abroad ‘converged,’ shared exciting new ideas and innovations with each other. It features presentations by prominent international practitioners in the fields of design, web branding and marketing as well as holding a workshop and panel discussions on various areas.

Speakers i really enjoyed seeing their presentation on the themes “Convergence” were:

Rajesh Dahiya founder of Co Design, who showed highlights of their projects include an interactive design for Levi’s Icon store, Xyls, Ideaspice, etc.

Feeder bottle is symbolic and iconic representation as it is closest to baby after mother symbolic of mother child love, affection, warmth relation and unconditional close love relation is my inspiration... Feeder bottle also satisfy the child’s hunger and also after having milk, the child sleeps in a carefree manner. Why I took Feeder Bottle ?Because, i took “Feeder bottle” as an object to study as it reminds me of childhood innocent, selfless, best part of life “kaash bachpan kabhi khatam nahi hota” as it is the best period because baby doesnt have to worry about assignment, jury. ” Khao Piyo Mast “and it represents child in me.While exploring it, I was trying to portray the situation of the child. I looked for material, structure and look of feeder bottle played with orientation, black and white balance. Complement the object with the word which are easily expressed in design.

Photography

We were introduced to yesteryears cameras like SLR , TLR and Sinar with feature like apertures, speed, ISO, depth of field, exposure, meter, etc. We learned importance of grayscale which were lately played important role in our photogram and developing process of film into image in photo paper before that we suggested a number of topics for photography such as texture, pattern, portraits, reflections, shadow, street life, etc. and finally reflection and shadow assigned by our faculty. I was lucky to team up with Neha who is a localite and we set out early morning on her scooty to Vastrapur lake which is famous jogging spot with morning walkers. Initially for 2 days, we tried to take pictures of reflection through water, mirror, etc. Then we had to explore other meanings of reflection rather than just literal meaning. We then set out to explore reflection of poverty, misery, happiness, concern, affection, etc. This was a mixed response as we went through a series of negative and positive emotions experienced due to deprivation such as hunger, disease and sibling concern, parent child relationship, etc.

One day, Sir took us to Sidhpur and Rani Ki Vav on a study tour cum excursion. We left NID campus around 5:30 am and reached our destination around 7am. It was a fun filled trip and we had snack with tea and headed for shoot around the haveli in Sidhpur. History behind the Sidhpur was amazing when we inquired from local people staying out there. My eyes was stuck at an amazing arcihtecture and their cultures out there. My feeling was like as i am stepped into another world.

In one of the haveli, there were around 300 windows and there were many gali in which there were colorful painted haveli. Inisde the haveli, the wooden almirah decorated wid beautiful motifs were still alive. Then we left for Rani ki Vav which is one of the most amazing and magnificent step well, I have ever witnessed. We were awestruck by the ornamental work, beautifully proportioned sculptures, architectural, brilliance and wanted to shoot each and every view from different angles.

In this assignment, we were assigned to do studio shoot of nidus product with the themes “RETRO”. Me, Kanchan and Neha worked together on the layout to shoot the themes to come out with the result. While shooting, we kept in mind what actually retro denote or classify culturally outdated or aged trends, modes, or fashions, from the overall postmodern past, but have since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again.

In this assignment, we were assigned to shoot independently and were told to shoot on the particular themes in Reflection. Been born and brought up in Delhi, I chose to shoot street life in Old Delhi. As during those week, Bomb blast happened, we could’nt go out for shoot due to fear. When i went to my hometown, i grab the opportunity to show the reflection of Old Delhi. Delhi being the capital attracts a lot of migrants from other states as it offers job opportunities

and has a mix of rural and urban, rich and poor people lined up for food, generous people offering food to the poor, vendors selling ready made food and everything conceivable under the sun such as spices, datuns, tea, snacks, flowers, beedi, etc. This unique experience on streets of Old Delhi evokes a number of emotions such as helplessness on seeing people lined up for food, different religions communities living in harmony, hustle and bustle due to trade and commerce activities.

We were also assigned to make presentation on famous photographer and analyze his photographs. I was lucky to chose the great photographer Raghubir, who have excel in this photography field. While doing this work, i tried my best to understand and analyze his work in terms of importance of Elements and Principles of Design.

The purpose of this course was to know all the basic funda of handling manual camera nd developing process to get good result and to be able to play with lights and get a perfect frame of a particular themes.

Science and Liberal Arts

India is a multi-lingual, multi- religious society where people belonging yo different castes, creed, religion, languages live in harmony. India can be aptly described as unity in diversity because inspite of the differences, there is a common thread interweaving different sections of society. In earlier day, India has been invaded by Mughal and British and has imbibed part of their culture. During this course we were told to make logo which represents India. In my assignment, i designed logo which represent Indian flag and Sun God which is worshipped and is the essence of all life on our planet. I have covered aspects of science, religion and arts. While making the Symbol, i kept in mind that it somehow represents India. I tried to show to 24 spokes in the chakra represent 24 virtues like Courage, Patience, Peacefulness, Kindness, Sympathy, Godly knowledge, Godly wisdom, Godly moral, Reverential fear of God, Hope/trust/faith in the goodness of God.etc. Sun is also important element in our daily life as we are dependent on carbon dioxide, sun and food. It also plays role in Religion as sun is God of light, we worship God Surya, and we listen Gayatri .Mantra early morning. It also plays important role in Arts like Swastika and Sun Cross is been seen as a symbol. It also plays an important role in Color,A band of colours produced by separation of the components of light by their different degrees of refraction according to wavelength,Example: in a rainbow, etc. It also plays an important role in Arts , when sun goes down it take black color from the night and get yellow color from moon, skyblue from the sky and orange from

twilight, green from greenery and than it creates the nice painting of this world. It is the most powerful and bright star. It also plays important role in Architecture which are the best example is “Konark Temple” popularly known as Sun temple in Orissa. Wheel of sun chariot used to inform people about the timing of sun. People used to work according to the sun, for example: if the sunlight struck in the middle and the sun is about to set, people used to pack up their work and used to go back to home to spend time with their family, by having dinner together and sharing the whole day experience. This is how people used to assume their time according to the sunrays passed through sun wheel of Konark temple.

In our group project we chose turban as a representation of Indian culture as turban is used across religions (sikh, muslim, hindus) and in different parts of the country (i.e Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat). Turban is a headdress consisting of a long scarf-like single piece of cloth wound round the head or an inner hatIn Hindi, a turban is called a pagrī or sāfā. Sikhs often call it dastar (pronounced dastār), a distinctive and more respectful Punjabi word for a Sikh ‘turban’. The word dastar (pronounced destār in Turkish) is also used in the Mevlevi order of Whirling. In the districts of Kodagu and Mysore, turban is known as Mysore peta. In Islamic religion, wearing turban is considered customary. Muslims call turban “imamah”. Most of the scholars in Muslim countries wear turban. It symbolise their class, caste and religious association. Some of the silk fabric used for making turbans include are Pure Silk and Satin Silk.

Turbans worn by Rajputs from Rajasthan are woven in different fabrics including tie-dyes, leheriyas or self woven brocades. Zari work, Zardozi, Crystals, sequins and stones are also used to adorn the turbans for special occasions. Turbans have many connotations in Indian context. It gives an identity. It has evolved during the course of time. Today it seems that bandannas have replaced turbans, which no longer signifies the cultural values of turban. Today these bandannas are more a fashion statement which adds stylish look.Yet turbans have retained their identity and dignity. They still provide a strong representation of India.

Communication Studies

In this course, their purpose was to unite the strands through interaction and experience. The main aim was to foster an understanding of media artifacts and communicative acts by providing perspectives from contemperory theory and situating them in theoretical frameworks. It tooks a closer look at some of the basic communication models that invovles:

Through the analysis of images, texts, and the mass and hypermdeia, the course were intended on encouraging debate, questioning stereotypes and thereby arriving at a more profound understanding of media artifacts. The issues discussed were :

Communication is a basic of sharing and non- • communication is monologue (inter-personal)

eg: Empty paper communicates SIlenceBits play an important role in communication • as 0,1 or 0 and 1 comes from the word binary digits as1 deals with yes signal and 0 deals with no signal.Code is a system of signs; sign represents • something other than itself.Sign is constitutes by two sides•

Signified = signifier (Arbitary connection)Our mind think in structure because our • language is in structure. Our mind is like binary opposition - opposite • attracts.

Sender - Message - Receiver

Feedback

Naming is the art of power.• Our perception of color is very less due to • species, as we have adapted few. Aristophanes - lack - feelin of emptiness - due • to lack , we desire more - male feel lack ; vice versa.“When we do something, we get temporary • feeling of fullness”. - JouissanceIdentity is Nothing, but a series of • identification.Desire and thinking more to complete our life, • our desires and our fulfillment.Media is the extension of man or woman • or human. Every extension amplifies and amputates. eg : our clothes is an extension of our body.Rule of advertisments - Never make a • advertisement, where there is no rule od stereotypes.

We were told to make representation about our name. What we are...I tried to show my emo-tions and expression on my name ie. she is jovial.moody,etc. When we showed this to our faculty i got to know what exactly he was expecting. Apart from our real identity he wanted some metaphor or indirect way to connect our name with it which has a lot to relate with our identity. As we are somehow relate to some thing we stands outs our identity.

We were assigned for group presentation where we studied on the concept of Focault’s Panopticism and the techniques of discourse generation and control. What panopticsm means?Seeing without been seened.Panopticon (“all-seeing”) functioned as a round-the-

clock surveillance machine. Its design ensured that no

prisoner could ever see the ‘inspector’ who conducted

surveillance from the privileged central location within

the radial configuration. The prisoner could never know

when he was being surveilled -- mental uncertainty

that in itself would prove to be a crucial instrument of

discipline.

The theory of discipline in which everyone is observed and analyzed is embodied in a building that makes these operations easy to perform. It is a functional, permanent structure. The transi-tion from one to another represents the move to a society in which discipline is based on observation and examination. The disciplinary society is not necessarily one with a panopticon in every street: it is one where the state controls such methods of coercion and operates them throughout society. The development of a disciplinary society involves socio-economic factors, particularly population increase and economic development.

We all started by understanding “what panop-ticsm means” than we tried analysing the movie “Disturbia” where the boy is punished to stay at home and is not allowed to go out of home as there is a detector device tide in his leg, if crossed the limit it alarms. To kill his time, he started keeping eye on his neighbours. Suddenly, he find some fault with one of his neighbour, started watching him what he do and all…as that strange fellow was doing some wierd things out there in his own house. Somehow, a news of missing women in news and newspaper was happnening. He felt that he have seen this missing lady.He and his two other friend got involved in mission to find out the strange fellow. There was an amazing twist that the strange fellow was itself was keeping an eye on that boy since he felt that he is keeping an eye on him. The boy struggles a lot to find the truth behind the strange fellow and ultimately boy got the whole scenario behind the missing women by finding dead bodies in the stranger house.

Design Concern and Concept

In this course, we were introduced about food and design concept...I started wondering what is design doing design with food.???Than we were divided into three groups; assigned to do brainstorming on three segment like producer, converter and producer. Our day started with WHAT CONVERTER ACTUALLY MEANS???We had arguments with each other and finally we listed all those words which was ruling in our mind.

For me, Converter means;Raw material - Finished Product - Market Exchange- Profit

for the survival of the consumer

Link between producer and consumer• Improve quality and quantity• Improve standard of living• Play important role in copyrights, patents, • trademark, etc.Builds brand identity• Sets Target•

We took :a)Sun as a metaphor to explain the meaning of converter, as sun also plays important role in our life. With the help of sunlight, we gets food in return from plants and trees gets carbon dioxide from Sun. So in that context, Sun plays an important role in Converter.

b)Chain as a metaphor to show the link between producer and consumer. We placed all the words that showed link of restaurants, caterers, festivals, adulteration, etc.

Than we were again assigned in different group like Jain food, Marwari food, and Parsee food. We got distributed and looked where Jain was available ie. Jain community, Jain Residents, Jain temple, etc.Me and Archana decided to go to take interview of Jain family, where we met one family, they were truly followers of Jainism named “SHAH family” and met others family too but in their family their next generation believed in havin food at late night, eating out, etc.We started by asking about the Jain food and culture. We realized that all Jain food was more dependent on religious culture. They don’t believe in having bolied water as they don’t want to kill bacteria. They don’t have underground roots food. They have substitutes for potatoes like they have banana samosa, pizza without onion, etc. They also do have basic food like us but they believe in putting species.Other group got data about monk’s life and their food culture. They never cook instead they go to people house for bheeksha in patra and never had money or utensil to cook. They even don’t believe in taking bath and stayed in caves with no electricity.

“Jeene ke liye khaate hai, shuak ke liye nahi khaate.

Jeene ke liye khaana hai, khaane ke liye nahi khaana.”

After our research, we all were stuck as we had limited resource. So we choose Road as a metaphor for Jain food. As Jain believed in walking in right path. True believer of “Ahinsa”. Than we listed out the opportunities about Jain food that is solar cooker, games, clothes, anti bacteria mineral water, Jain food outlet, Jain caterers, Jain Tantra T-shirt, etc. Than I realized that their objective was to sensitize their emotions; to understand the procedure of how designs sells in the market with the help of research to get efficient result.

Cognitive Psycology

Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that studies mental processes including how people think, perceive, remember and learn. Cognitive psychology is related to other disciplines including neuroscience, philosophy, and linguistics. The core focus of cognitive psychology is on how people acquire, process and store information. There are numerous practical applications for cognitive research, such as ways to improve memory, how to increase decision-making accuracy, and how to structure educational curricula to enhance learning. Cognitive psychology is concerned with internal mental states and uses scientific research methods to study mental processes. We were taught very interesting topic about the colour concept :

It’s not easy to react quickly, when the word itself is replaced with the other identity, eg: the word “Blue” is filled with red colour and we generally speak as “Red” as its in our human psycology.Because cognitive psychology touches on many other disciplines, people in a number of different fields such as students interested in behavioral neuroscience, linguistics, teachers, educators and curriculum designers, engineers, scientists,

artists, architects and designers often study this branch of psychology and can all benefit from understanding of internal mental states and processes. The exposure to cognitive psychology has helped me in understanding different response in different individuals to same external stimulus which depends on socio-economic condition of the individual, educational status, environment, family background, peer group, affluence of the family, type of family such as nuclear family, joint family, rural or urban setting etc. I am able to understand growing violence or aggression in society evident in form of terrorism, road rage, increasing corruption etc. due to the increasing materialistic demands. I am able to critically analyze the media reports as well as the need for self explanatory associated visuals as the educational background of the readers varies greatly.RED BLUE

We were assigned to collect three graphic from newspaper related to bomb blast which happened in Banglore, Ahmedabad, and Surat and had to analyze the whole scenario behind this newspaper clipping. I tried to analyze the graphic and simplified it according it to be able to understand by the common man.I have become more sympathetic and considerate to even contrasting viewpoint. I have started appreciating different response to same external environment by different individuals and at time same individual due to his mood, physical status, family pressure, financial status etc.

We also studied the graphic representation in US which is a developed country and then made corresponding graphics which show an understanding of the same situation in India. US is a more materialistic world where emotions and sentiments have little place while India is more human centric. I tried to look for the metaphor meaning from the given punchline. It was a different experience exploring about Indian nature and their culture.
