Principal’s ReportAt Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, we educate and prepare our students to be the best they are called in a faith-filled and inclusive environment. This edition of Semester News highlights our achievements and shares our plans for the future.

It is an honour to lead our college through what is shaping up to be one of our best performing years. Our On Track data, Naplan results and our latest VCE scores continue to show our ongoing improvements. I am proud to share the following successes:

» Increasing numbers of Year 10 and Year 11 students completing Enhancement Studies

» VCE Students with perfect subject study scores

» Expanding pathways and excellence in our VCE, VET, and VCAL programmes

» A new partnership with Australian Catholic University which has students in Year 12 completing university subjects delivered by our very own teachers

» A number of VET subjects being delivered on-campus and plans to expand this

» An expanding Family School Partnership role with the community

» Continued to increase our student services

Our refurbishments continue throughout 2015 and the enclosed pictures show how the projects are tracking. It is a terrific opportunity to offer our students the very best facilities that we can in support of the learning and teaching going on across our three campuses. We approach 2015 with a clear vision for the college; to be the leader in learning excellence in our community.

Our mission and purpose have become clearer, highlighting what we value:

» Faith (living faith-filled lives and giving thanks daily)

» Acceptance (respecting and embracing the community)

» Compassion (caring and doing what is right and just)

» Excellence (striving for and celebrating every success)

I thank you all for your continued support and look forward to an even bigger Semester 2.

Prayer of ThanksgivingDear God,

We are here to express our gratitude for all your blessings. You have given us so much, not only providing what we need to live, but in giving us yourself.

We are richly blessed, and it is right to acknowledge that you are the source of all good things. Yet this time also brings a mix of emotions to us. We confess our thanks, but also our sadness because of the empty place at our table.

We know that death and sorrow were not your original plan, but we also know that you use difficulties to draw us closer to you and each other.

Here and now fill the empty places in our hearts and this empty place at our table. Teach us to savour the moments we have with one another, to rightly remember what we have lost, but also to look forward in hope to what we have promised in the future. We say again, ‘Your love is better than life.’

Thank you for all your blessings, for even through trials and loss you always, somehow, reveal your goodness. In Jesus we pray.

Amen

In Memory of Jean-Clause Prosper

Student Leadership Our college is special in many ways. We nurture and accommodate the aptitudes of each individual within the Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student body. As a community, we all work towards establishing and developing an environment in which we can all learn, grow, persevere and support one another.

Caroline Chisholm Catholic College is a representation of all the many different personalities, talents, cultures and ethnic backgrounds that each individual brings to our college community. With the many minds and one heart that we form; each of our individual talents and gifts will enable us to be the very best we are called to be. The diversity of our

college inspires us to break down the stereotypes perceived by the outside to embrace the multicultural society in which we all play a vital role.

As student leaders we wholeheartedly work together towards the unification of our three campuses. We would like to model the values and morals of the college as well as inspire junior and senior students to take on the challenge of leadership and service to others.

Student leadership acts as a bridge of communication between students and staff. We strive to achieve excellence and nothing less than the best for our school. We are committed to making sure both the voices of students and staff are heard and understood.

VCE 2014 Results The 2014 VCE results reflected outstanding performances by the college. Our Top 20 students all achieved an ATAR above 86, with a number receiving results above 90, and three students attaining a perfect study score of 50.

We congratulate;

» Andrew Luong, College Dux, with an ATAR of 98.95

» Stephen Degtiarev, with a 50 in Systems Engineering

» Helen Tran, with a 50 in Further Mathematics

» Dylan Jape, with a 50 in Biology

Congratulations to our 2014 Year 12’s and their teachers; we wish them well in their 2015 pursuits and know they will continue to achieve great things in the future.

Australian Student Journalist We congratulate Roxanne Moussalem of Year 11, who was selected as one of only five guest editors from a wide field of applicants as a student journalist for the Australian Catholics magazine; a print publication distributed to all Catholic school students reaching more than 150,000 families across the country.

After completing an internship that involves preparing the magazine’s spring edition, Roxanne will have the chance to write for the publication on an ongoing basis. This experience gives Roxanne the opportunity of publishing her written work and pursuing her passion for journalism.

SACCSS Golf Champ Congratulations to Lance Smith of Year 11 who followed up his 2014 Junior Champion win for the Western Zone SACCSS Golf Tournament with another title in 2015!

Lance was crowned Senior Champion on February 23rd at Werribee Golf Club after surmounting difficult conditions including storms, wet weather and extended breaks in play to take the title. Lance hopes to complete a cadetship

on becoming a golf professional at the end of Year 12 and aspires to one day play the international circuit as a professional golfer.

With his eligibility to play for Caroline Chisholm continuing for another year, Lance may well add even more success to his already impressive resume in 2016.

Well done to Lance on his great achievements to date!

Student Principal for a Day This year, Caroline Chisholm Catholic College was amongst 176 schools across Australia who participated in the ‘Student Principal for a Day’ event.

Following an application process, two students were selected by College Principal, Marco DiCesare to be a part of this amazing experience. Under the guidance of Principal DiCesare, the big day took place on Wednesday June 3rd, with both students warned beforehand that a day in the life of a principal is always unpredictable. As Student Principals, Dale and Melissa’s day consisted of attending a Parent Coffee Morning and a Leadership Team Meeting, going on Learning Walks and having various discussions about college changes.

Dale Guiney (Year 9): On the day, I was nervous but excited. I did not know how the day was going to go and what we would do. We walked around the construction sites, getting a point of view on how they were going and how long it would be before the sites would be re-opened. The quadrangle is looking really good and I cannot wait for it to open. We then went into the front reception area which is being renovated. There was still much to do there, but it is developing well. After this, I attended a Leadership Team meeting. I received an inside view on how a leadership meeting is run and learned some new things that the college

does. I thought the meeting would have been boring, but it was quite interesting and fun. The best part of the day of course, was the food – we provided a morning tea for the staff. I think that being a Principal is a hard job, but at the end of the day it is rewarding and worth it.

Melissa Pham (Year 11): Being Student Principal for a day was a great learning opportunity that enabled me to experience not only a day as a Principal, but also as an adult and interacting with other staff and students. From a student’s perspective, I would have thought that principals don’t do much, but the day made me realise how much really goes on behind the scenes in running a school – days filled with important meetings, Learning

Walks and overseeing the construction work. As Student Principals, we were the first students to walk through the amazing Gallery and Quad, as well as the construction sites at the front of the school. I was amazed at the transformations our school has undergone so far and cannot wait for it all to be completed. Morning tea in the staffroom and being served lunch after the Leadership Meeting was also a yummy bonus! It was a different, yet fun day – one that rarely comes by – as the roles were reversed for us.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Principal Marco DiCesare and Michelle Dobai for making our Student Principal for the Day run as smoothly as it did and for the incredible experience.

Serra Club Portraiture Award Congratulations to Simone Bituin of Year 11 who received the Serra Club Portraiture Award from the Catholic Education Office for her piece ‘Lola Lydia’.

VCAL Tasmania Trip Congratulations to our Senior VCAL students following the success of their field trip to Tasmania, which involved visits to various locations within the state. The trip’s key focus was working on a number of programmes with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) at the Port Arthur Coal Mining historic site, located about 90 minutes from Hobart.

The students involved took responsibility for designing, organising and implementing the Tasmania programme themselves. The experience included survey data collection, track maintenance, clearing of an old stone building site and horticulture work.

It was a pleasure to hear how very hard our students worked and the high praise the CVA had for them. They have each received a certificate and more importantly, valuable experience to add to their resume that they can bring to their lives beyond the college.

Catholic Education Celebratory Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral By Shruti Bhushan, Year 9

On March 17th, six students from Years 9 and 11 travelled to the city for the wonderful honour of joining schools all across Melbourne to celebrate this year’s Catholic Education Celebratory Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The mass focussed on us, as students, in the faith and wider community with the Archbishop of Melbourne, Most Reverend Denis J. Hart, speaking to us about our relationships with God and our Community.

We spent a peaceful time going through the process of mass, while reflecting in the warm and inviting environment of

St Patrick’s Cathedral. Archbishop Hart talked about how “we serve God faithfully in our living and community, by working together with respect, love and peace in making God’s Kingdom, a reality in the world.”

All in all, our day spent at mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Fitzroy Gardens brought lots of laughter and happiness, with our sense of respect and faith towards God, being reignited. We also learnt more about St Patrick, who was “a man of faith and he is just like us.” The day was a remarkable experience as well as a beautiful reminder about our ties with God.

Premier’s VCE Award This year one of our 2014 Top 20 VCE graduates, Stephen Degtiarev was recently awarded a 2015 Premier’s VCE Study Award for Systems Engineering.

Each year students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education are recognised at the Premier’s VCE Awards. Students must have a study score of 46 or above to be eligible for an award. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Stephen on his achievement of such a prestigious award.

Whitten Project Four Year 9 students have been accepted into the Whitten project; a unique initiative developed by the Western Bulldogs, designed to develop leadership skills and focusses on giving back to the local community.

Over the course of the project, students will get to meet and work with Vixens netball players, Bulldogs football players and coach, as well as local council members.

Well done to Claudia Saric (9I), Neena Pynadath (9F), Sarah Gatt (9G) and Bryson Linsley (9B) who were selected, as well as all the students who were nominated for the project for having their strengths and talents recognised.

AFL Season Launch Term 1 saw two very lucky Year 12 students given the exciting chance to meet a number of AFL legends.

The AFL invited schools across Victoria to help them kick-start the 2015 AFL Premiership Season. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College sent along our two senior AFL captains from our male and female teams, Joshua Schembri and Katherine Salkovic.

It was the first time that schools had been asked to participate in the AFL Season Launch, so little was known about what to expect from the event. Upon arrival at Etihad Stadium’s Victory Room, the students were greeted with some breakfast and conversation from local Victorian club and school footballers.

After the students gathered in the stadium stands, the 18 AFL Club Captains joined students and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them for a photo. Following the shoot, Joshua and Katherine had the opportunity to meet and greet all the captains and even enjoyed a kick-to-kick with some of their favourites. Joshua and Katherine represented Caroline Chisholm Catholic College with pride and professionalism in what was an occasion they will never forget.

Moomba By Kiah Saric, Year 11

As the result of a brilliant idea from Ms Debrincat, this year a team of students from Years 7 - 12 had the exciting opportunity to participate in one of Melbourne’s major events, the Moomba Parade. Those involved danced down St Kilda Road alongside the rest of the talented parade acts and spectacular floats.

In order to turn the idea into a reality, a short video of the dance the students would perform needed to be filmed and submitted to the Moomba officials for judging.

With only a few weeks to practise ahead of the parade day, the staff and students got stuck in to rehearsals, which included after-school and weekend sessions. The ‘Cat in the Hat’ themed routine included full costumes and sharp moves to match.

Bright and early on Monday March 9th, the third and final day of the Moomba festivities, the 18-strong group of Caroline Chisholm students (and Ms Debrincat) were ready, and after some extra hair teasing, blue hairspray and bow ties, the final preparations were complete. We

headed over to the starting point of the parade at 11am, then the music started and we were off passing overly excited kids, people dressed as celery sticks, cameras and huge crowds of onlookers.

Overall it was an exhilarating experience for everyone involved. The team gained a sneak peek into the amount of work that actually goes into events such as these and it was amazing to know that we had been a part of it. Caroline Chisholm even received a mention on Channel 7 News!

Mission to Mars Students and staff at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College were fortunate enough to have a unique guest visit from Dianne McGrath, who is currently on the shortlist to become one of the first people to set foot on Mars.

In a mission initiated by the Netherlands-based Mars One Program, Dianne could embark on a one-way trip in an effort to progress human development. She spoke to the students about the ambitious idea of living out the rest of her days in outer space, a concept that might not seem so bizarre in several years’ time when the current study body will graduate.

Andrew MartinDeputy Principal (Wellbeing)

At the beginning of each New Year we tend to think about change in our lives. Sometimes, change is thrust upon us, in the form of transition from one school or class to another, or as part of the journey to adulthood. Although it can be difficult, change and transition challenge us to take risks in our learning in order to continue growing as individuals that contribute to our community and develop our values.

This year I am challenged, along with our students, to take those risks to grow as I embark on a new journey with our community here at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College.

In my previous role as Deputy Principal and Campus Director at Lavalla Catholic College I was able to contribute to major changes across the Learning and Wellbeing programmes. Prior to that I was at St Joseph’s College in Ferntree Gully as a Head of the Valdocco Campus.

I would like to thank the staff and parents of the college for the wonderful welcome I have received as a new member of the community. I feel affirmed by the experience and I look forward to the growth that life at the college will continue to bring.

Suzanne Farley Director of Learning (Years 10–12)

I’ve been fortunate enough to work in various positions at a number of schools in Gippsland, and now join the Leadership Team here as the Director of Learning for Years 10 - 12. At my last school I worked as the Learning and Teaching Leader to help implement a number of senior programmes.

I’ve had such a terrific welcoming to Caroline Chisholm Catholic College and appreciate all the staff and students being helpful and supportive. I am looking forward to working with the staff to continue to develop programmes and curriculum that allow all students to be their very best.

I will be focussing on programmes such as VET, VCAL and University Enrichment subjects, as well as increasing the offerings to students. I am thrilled with all the new opportunities this brings for me to share my knowledge and also learn from a new community. There is an air of excitement at the campuses and I am excited to be a part of what is an innovative college.

Bernard Green Director of Faith and Mission

Taking on the role of Director of Faith and Mission at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College this year has already been a rewarding experience. My highlights to date include the Commissioning Mass and Ash Wednesday celebrations. It is exciting to see the peaceful and purposeful approach amongst the students and staff in their daily work.

This is the third college where I have led the Faith and Mission area and I always find it a privilege to be able to celebrate the faith life of students and staff. Planning liturgies for all occasions, including Founders Days, graduations, retreats and even funerals, brings to the fore the Catholic style of worship and celebration. I’m able to share moments of life that people often recall decades later and bring to life the preaching of Jesus; ‘I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full’ (John 10:10).

I am lucky to be able to combine my passion for theology with my work life. Teaching Religious Education invites students to grow their religious knowledge, faith and spirituality. It also challenges them to ask the big questions in their lives as to how they will both develop and share their God-given talents and gifts with each other, and the world around them.
