    Saint Peters Basilica, RomeIn 1506 architect Donato Bramante, undercommission from Pope Julius II, designed SaintPeters, located in Vatican City, within the city ofRome. Bramante died before completing thechurch, so Florentine artist Michelangelo assumedthe supervisory role in 1546. Michelangelos

    innovative design for the enormous ribbed domeof Saint Peters influenced dome design andconstruction for the next 300 years. The dome,which was completed after the death ofMichelangelo, preserves the essential elements ofhis design but is taller and more elongated than heplanned.

    Geodesic DomeThis geodesic dome was built for the UnitedStates pavilion at Expo 67, the worlds fair inMontral, Canada. Geodesic domes have nointernal supports, making them ideal structuresfor holding large groups of people. They aremade up of standardized, interlocking shapes

    that can be assembled and taken apart quickly.
