June 10, 2014. On a gorgeous summer day at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Buffalo Seminary graduated 43 seniors who had entered as girls but now commence their lives as SEM-powered young women, ready to leap any “confidence gap,” well prepared for what lies ahead.

“All of us will miss this class tremendously but we wish them joy and many wonderful accomplishments,” Head of School Jody Douglass said in her welcome to the assembled.

During the ceremony, Ms. Douglass awarded Helen Ladds Marlette, Assistant Head of School, the Paul J. Koessler Award. Ms. Douglass said, “Helen manages to bring out the best in each individual she has taught or coached, even the adults she works with. There is no one more deserving of recognition.”

SEM Trustee and graduate Nicole C. Lee ’94 gave the commencement address. “You are a bright and determined class that is not afraid to stand together,” she said. “You remind me so much of my graduating class – outgoing, strong and diverse….You are going to have great, meaningful lives. You are destined for it if you follow your path, stay your course.”

Closing remarks were given by teacher and alumna Molly O’Connor Greene ’98 whose message was, “make everything that happens to you, good for you.”

This stellar class that welcomed four Holy Angels students last fall, will go to colleges and universities from coast to coast – from Washington State University and UCLA in the West, to Notre Dame and Queen’s University (Ont., Canada) in between, to Amherst, Tufts, and Boston University in the East.

This address was given at the Class Day ceremony on June 9, 2014. Molly began by asking for a moment of silence in memory of classmate Helen Boisaubin.

Moving forward, it is important to keep in mind what it means to be a SEM girl. We strive for academic excellence. We serve others in need. We have a strong obligation to our community. We appreciate the rich history and traditions of our school. Following in those SEM traditions, I would like to offer words of advice and encouragement to each class.

Freshmen: Your first year at SEM may have been a drastic change from middle school: new surroundings, classmates, and teachers. You walked in and looked like deer in headlights. And then you were hit with truckloads of homework, expectations, and responsibility. You gradually learned how to become a high school student. You learned to balance your schoolwork and manage your time. Hang in there, the best is yet to come.

Sophomores: We don’t often see it, but there are great opportunities right in front of us. Take full advantage of every opportunity that comes your way in your junior year. Appreciate everything that SEM has to offer. You won’t regret it.

Juniors: I am confident that you will be well equipped to handle anything thrown your way senior year. In order to succeed, especially as leaders of the school, you will all need to work together and support one another. Remember to take a moment now and then to appreciate your last year of high school together, because it will fly by before you know it.

Lastly, my beloved seniors, my sisters, I wish that I had some profound words of wisdom for all of you, but in truth I don’t know any more than you about what the future holds for us. I see the talent, determination, wit, and grace in all of you. A great future is inevitable. The Class of 2014 has always been small in number. But, they say that dynamite comes in small packages, and you my friends are just that, powerful dynamite.

None of us could have made it this far, by ourselves. We owe our success to the constant support and encouragement from our teachers, parents, and each other.

In closing, I would like to leave you with a quote by Sir Winston Churchill. “Remember that success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

SEM Seniors Adapt “Heroes” The three actresses adapted the Gerald Sibleyras/Tom Stoppard play about old, male, W.W. I soldiers planning an escape from their veteran’s home, and then they inhabited the roles...uncannily. Maribel Leddy, Katie Thomas, and Natalie Voos convinced Ms. Drozd to let them put on the production as their senior internship. Senior Pam Rivas was set designer. Directed by Brian Cavanaugh. Joan Kostick Andrews Spring ConcertOn May 1st, Mr. Martin directed the annual musical evening as the ensemble played, joined by the Glee Clubs (student and faculty) and the SEMACHORDS for songs and music that ranged from Andrew Lloyd Webber, to a Quaker hymn, to the Beatles and Pete Seeger.

Over lunches, brunches, dinners, cocktail hours, tours, and a tree dedication, SEM alumnae celebrated each other the weekend of June 6-7, 2014. SEM

graduate mothers and daughters, sisters, and old friends found classmates at organized events and their own impromptu ones. The classes ending in 4 and 9 were particularly feted, and classes ending in 5 and 0, you’re next! See you June 5-6, 2015.

ClassNotesClass of 1940Mina Roblin Neidrauer: I spent last November to March in Saipan with my daughter Jill and had a wonderful time as I have for the last six years. Last August my great-grandson Ezra was born, joining big sister Corabelle. I feel very blessed to be nearby my daughter Rikki and her husband.

Class of 1948Julia Smith Dutton: I now live in Michigan. How I wish we were near enough to visit my most favorite school! I love hearing about your growth in every aspect of teaching and learning.

Class of 1950Elinor “Lannie” Osborn Gartner: I live in a retirement community in Sewickley, PA. Rod and I spend our summers at Bay Beach, Canada. I am always happy to hear from Joan Marsh Brady about our Class of ’50 lunch at the Buffalo Yacht Club. Ethel Roblin Melzer: Sixty-four and counting! Let’s all get together next year!

Class of 1954Julie Magavern Smith: Sadly, I will not be able to attend our 60th. However, I will think of my class enjoying each other during the weekend of our reunion.

Class of 1955Nancy Marsh: I’m moving near to Lexington, KY, to be closer to my family. I’m retiring from occupational therapy after 52 years and will return to weaving and enjoying every moment with family and my new life.

Class of 1970Patricia Howard Hart: Happy to be back living in Ann Arbor; beginning August, some Burlington, VT, time each month.

Class of 1973Lucy Butterbaugh Coburn: I’ve been working hard to sustain my commitment to daily exercise, whether it be Zumba (at SEM), Bollywood dancing, or yoga. So far, so good!

Class of 1974Pamela Franco Etzin: I wish you a wonderful reunion weekend. May you all enjoy each other’s company in the spirit of all that you are!

Class of 1977Victoria Forbush: I’m still a substance abuse counselor. My two boys: Sam is a photographer in San Francisco. Dan is a junior at Skidmore College studying business.Molly Dellinger-Wray: I live in Richmond, VA, and am on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. I return to the Buffalo area in the summer, and I will always hold a special place in my heart for SEM.

Class of 1980Madonna Dunbar: I’m still lucky enough to be “Living the Dream” at Lake Tahoe! I’m heading into my eighth year at as the resource conservationist for Incline Village, NV, where I provide education and technical services on topics ranging from water conservation to my favorite - teaching people how to Be Bear Smart. I look forward to our 35th class reunion next year. I plan to attend the alumnae celebrations and see my best friend’s daughter (Danielle Dolan) graduate in the Class of 2015!

Class of 1982Tara Cox Matisse: Still a professor of genetics at Rutgers University (14 years)! Daughters are in 10th and 5th grade and husband is also a professor at Rutgers. Lucky to have a happy and healthy family and a great job!

Class of 1986Robin Pfalzgraf Irwin: Robin is senior advancement officer at SUNY Geneseo. Amy Habib Rittling: With a colleague at Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman, launched nyemploymentlaw.com.

Class of 1988Tara Ellis: The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York named her to the 2014 Class of Health Leadership Fellows, recognizing 42 diverse, skilled leaders from health-related and safety net organizations.

Class of 1998Liza Camhi Amor: Named the 2014 Nevada Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association, she teaches art at Kim Elementary School and Lundy Elementary School in Nevada.

Class of 1999Molly Beck-Joslyn: My husband, daughter Emma and I welcomed Zoey into our lives last June. We remain in Buffalo, where I continue to work in my private practice part-time. We are looking

forward to watching our oldest niece, Mackenzie, join the Hornet Class of 2018 in the fall!Katherine Dickinson: I’m currently living in Naples, FL. I work for GE Transportation doing analytics. I love life as a new mom and can’t believe my daughter will be turning one this summer.Cait Lawton: I’m working for a dermatologist in Lancaster. I’m a proud new aunt to Noah Pritchard, son of Billy and Lisa Pritchard ’99. I’m keeping up with Danish and will start holding informal lessons this summer.

Class of 2001Meaghan Bailey: I was married almost exactly a year ago to a fellow UVA graduate. We moved to Colorado about a year ago where I’m the senior director of regulatory affairs at NSF Health Sciences Medical Devices. In my free time, my husband and I love to ski, hike, and travel whenever we can.Hannah Creeley-Cedermark: I got married in August 2013 and have been living in NYC (Harlem) since 2009 working for the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Class of 2002Elizabeth DiCioccio: Graduated from Middlebury in 2006. Now, principal at Mercury Capital Advisors. She raises institutional capital for private equity, real estate, and other alternative investments in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and in Scandinavia. She resides in Dubai. Caitlin DeTine: I was engaged to Stephen Brash on my birthday, December 9, 2013.Maria Spencer: Working at Tufts University and relocating to Buffalo in August.

Class of 2005Amy Andres: After living in Melboune, Australia for nearly two years, I decided to come back to the University of the Sunshine Coast to do a post-graduate degree in secondary education.Hannah Wadsworth: Skiing, climbing and enjoying all that the mountains of Washington have to offer. I’ve been working as the executive assistant to the head at an independent Seattle elementary school. In September I’m beginning a Master in Teaching program at Seattle University, with an endorsement

in secondary language arts. My goal is to teach middle school English.

Class of 2010Kathryn Michalek: Graduated cum laude in December 2013 from SUNY Geneseo with a B.S. in Speech & Hearing Handicapped. I work as a speech therapist in the autism spectrum disorder department of a Rochester, NY, public school. Attending University at Buffalo in fall 2014 for a Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders & Sciences.Julia Papiernik: I curated an art exhibit called From Water to Wall, of emerging artists from the Hudson Valley area. After I graduate from Marist College this spring, I will work at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in its curatorial department.

Class of 2011Lia DiNunzio: I’m Miss Buffalo International 2014! I’m enrolled at the University at Buffalo and I’ve made a goal to raise $10,000 for the Hospice Foundation of Buffalo, while also encouraging our city’s youth to volunteer. I spread my message of volunteerism at liadinunzio.com.Olivia Knauss: This year I spent five months abroad through Rhodes College. I studied at Sewanee: the University of the South, and Lincoln College in Oxford. I then traveled through France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany studying art history. When my program ended I backpacked through Germany. After returning to the States, I shadowed Ms. Wetzel, as I hope to find an art education job after graduation next year. I wrote a proposal to start an art camp for refugee children in Memphis, which starts in June, and I also received a summer fellowship as a studio assistant to Memphis artist and Rhodes professor, Erin Harmon.

Class of 2012Juliette Brown: Took a semester abroad in Rabat, Morocco. Amidst making new friends, traveling, and finding her way around a primarily French and Arabic speaking country, she learned about the country and its people. She is constantly reminded of how fortunate she is to have such an incredible experience and tries her best to soak up and learn from every moment. Bella Buscarino: Studying chemistry and art history with a concentration in the visual arts at Barnard College. She is coordinator for the Barnard Clay Collective, a TA for Barnard Jewelry, and

a Barnard bartender.Emily Cardullo: At Niagara University studying marketing and communications. An EAGLE leader, a senator for the Class of 2016, and will serve as vice president for next year. She is active in numerous clubs and intramural sports and sits on academic and student committees.Grace Clauss: I will be the new assistant design editor of the school newspaper, The Ithacan. (It is ranked the top non-daily college newspaper in the nation as of 2013.) I also write for Cake: the school’s music magazine. I am studying communications management and design.Erika Douglas: I realized that I have a true passion for television and film, and I would receive the best communications education at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, so I transferred from Fordham. I work at the Newhouse TV station, Citrus TV, where I help record and edit the news broadcast. I am a member of the Delta Gamma fraternity. This summer I will travel to Mumbai, India to study Bollywood film and take summer classes as I prepare to intern in Los Angeles.Jaime Engl: Going into her junior year at Marist College majoring in computer science and minoring in French. She is the publicity chair of Marist’s Student Programming Council and vice president of North End’s Residence Hall Council. She is also a member of Singers, Dean’s Circle, the Emerging Leaders Program, the Honors program, and intramural badminton. Jaime will be a Marist orientation leader before returning to Summer at SEM.Jasmine Foster: I’m a peer coach for freshmen. I have two radio shows and broadcast the news on Thursday on Bonaventure’s radio station. I am also the performance chair for the campus activities board.Eliza Kaye: This semester I became the director for hiring, recruitment, and training for all of the tour guides at Pitt. I declared my majors as psychology and urban studies and may pursue a certificate in global studies. I also served as vice president for Challah for Hunger, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, was a member of the recreation committee on Student Government Board, and of SCNO (student consultants for nonprofit organizations). This summer I will stay in Pittsburgh working as a tour guide.Lea Karnath: I was accepted into Geneseo’s Creative Writing track last semester. I am health anchor for the student-run television station, produce a

weekly comedy show, and I am also the station’s public relations manager. I write for the campus newspaper in the Arts & Entertainment section. I continue to play violin in string band and am a member of English Club, Creative Writing Club, and Yoga Club. I also tutor at the Writing Learning Center.Donna Kimmins: This is my second year as a representative on Trinity College’s Student Government Association. This is also my second year on Barnyard Entertainment, a campus organization that provides entertainment and events. This summer I will be a marketing/public relations intern at TD Garden in Boston. I recently joined a sorority called the Ivy Society and declared my major as political science. In the fall, I’ll be taking off to the Czech Republic for a semester to study in Prague! Shelby Kowalski: After two years in Santa Barbara attending SBCC, I am moving to Los Angeles with my brother. I will have an associate’s degree in liberal arts with a social and behavioral science emphasis. I plan to transfer to a California State College or University to major in the environmental studies or conservation. Alanna Leddy: I decided to go into environmental science here at the University of Pennsylvania, and although classes here are super hard, being in the Ivy League is an experience like no other! When I’m not in Spain with Bella (Isabella Buscarino ’12) and England with my family this summer, I’m going to be helping my sister (Maribel Leddy ’14) get ready to start her college career at Johns Hopkins, and volunteering at the Lothlorien Therapeutic Riding Center.Madison Paulk: I continued as a student representative on Colgate’s board for multicultural affairs. I am also a writer for The Colgate Maroon News and the philanthropy chair for my sorority, Delta Delta Delta. I’ve studied social justice movements in Cape Town, South Africa, and I’ll return to Durban, South Africa, to study social and political transformation in the fall.Sarah Scaccia: Focusing on school and hopefully applying to pharmacy school next year! Natalie Schoetz: Declared her major as French and Francophone studies and international relations with a minor in anthropology. She works in the Hobart Dean’s Office. She was accepted into the study abroad program in Aix-en-Provence, France, for spring 2015. This summer she will intern in Congressman Brian Higgins’ D.C. office.
