The third grade class has really been working this school year. We have fifteen amazing students in our class. We have moved over to our new room. Our new room is north of the cafeteria. We are reading, reading, reading, in Reading Mastery. In Math we are beginning to learn multiplication. In Science we are learning about food chains and food webs. In Social studies we are learning about communities. We are off to a great start this year!

SEM MUSTANGS OCTOBER 3, 2016
SEM FIRST GRADE —- MRS. BARB IBACH Greetings from the First Grade Classroom! We are off to an exciting start to the school year with nine, energetic students ready to explore and learn in our new classroom. We are enjoying being located near our other elementary friends and especially love having a connecting door with the Kindergarten. In September we learned the difference between living and non-living things and
topped it off by playing a friendly game of Kahoots to show off what we learned. The students are enjoying using their IPads and tablets to reinforce skills using technology. We appreciate the community members who have used their Thrivent cards to help purchase this equipment!

Science Classes Learn Scientific Method through Rocketry
Mrs. Pierce
The 8th - 12th Grade Science Classes began the year by using rocketry as a means of reviewing the Scientific Method. Students made a simple rocket which they had to modify to travel the longest distance. They had to record the following information about their rocket lab in their science notebooks:
“Ask a Question”
“Form a Hypothesis”
“Test the Hypothesis”
“Analyze Results”
“Draw Conclusions”
“Communicate Results”

Mustang Report
By Bill Schmidt
Hello Mustang Country, I hope you are all enjoying a great school year. I cannot believe that we are starting our sixth week of school already. The students have been fantastic this year, and I greatly appreciate it. I am looking forward to a strong finish to the first quarter, and I know it will be here in the blink of an eye. Thank you all for your support of SEM Public Schools.
We have started the MAPs testing and that will be finished by the end of the first quarter and we will send the results home with report cards. You should be able to see how each child has done over the past four years at SEM. I will be attending a training on September 29th, to help inform our staff how to use the information obtained by the MAPs testing results, to better serve each child.
I wanted to say thank you to all of the parents that were able to come to Parent Teacher Conferences. We will continue to work on making conferences better for the future. If you have questions or concerns please contact Mr. Doud or Mr. Schmidt. We appreciate those conversations and look forward to having them.
I will be sending out a link to complete a student, staff, and community surveys. I am hoping to do that around the end of the quarter. The results of the survey will be used to improve SEM public schools in a variety of areas. Please take the time to complete the survey, in a timely manner. There will be an ending date sent out as well. Please feel free to come in and discuss anything with the school, and thank you again for all that you do for SEM Public Schools.
SEM MARCHING BAND
-Mikayla Dittmar
Marching band time is here again! This year the S-E-M band will to travel to Grand Island to march at the Harvest of Harmony parade on October 1st. The band has gone to this parade for 7 straight years and it is a great parade. We will be on T.V. but we would love to have you there in person. The SEM Band consists of 7th-12th grade students. We look forward to performing and representing our school and communities. Check out NTV Saturday, October 1st or check the website afterwards. Thank you for your continued support!
Then on October 15th the band will travel to Minden for the Minden Bandfest Parade. We have gone to this Parade for 4 years. I think we will do very well this year because it is a short parade and our students seem to like it a lot! This parade is just for
bands so the atmosphere is great! It is much easier to find a spot along the parade route to watch the bands in this parade. Awards are presented after the parade at the football field.
The band this year has a lot of potential. We have been working super hard on a new song that will hopefully get us a high score. The song is called Aztec Fire and gets us away from our usual pop song selection. This song is a more traditional marching band tune that takes a lot of energy and endurance to perform. We have added flags to the band this year and they have been doing a fantastic job and have been working hard. We have a lot of potential and with all our hard work, it should be a great year!

¡Hola from the Spanish Department!
Sra. RoosStudents in Spanish 1 are busy practicing listening skills with the Total Physical Response method. TPR, as it is known, helps students develop an ear for Spanish by listening to the teacher give commands while imitating her actions. After practicing, the students are able to respond to commands without visual clues. It is amazing how adept they become at understanding and responding even when the commands are increasingly rapid and complex. Another very positive aspect of this method is that it helps students remember the language over the long-term.
In Spanish 2 students are continuing to branch out in language skills. Also, as a part of Spanish classes we learn about countries where the language is spoken. This is an area where our class has great connections with geography and social studies. It is interesting how many of these countries have a direct impact on life in Nebraska. Ask your Spanish student what he/she knows about the 20 Spanish-speaking countries.
¡Hasta luego!
Coming Soon to S.E.M. TeamMates Mentoring Program began in 1991 with the vision of University of Nebraska Head Football Coach Dr. Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy. Coach Osborne felt that the athletes in his program could make an impact on the middle school students, and twenty-two football players began meeting with middle school students in the Lincoln Public schools. Of the 22 original mentees, 21 went on to graduate from high school while one left school early to purse a successful Motocross career. Eighteen of the original menses also obtained some for of post-secondary education.
The TeamMates Mentoring Program was formalized as a statewide program in 1998 with 12 chapters and 441 mentor/mentee matches. Since then, TeamMates has steadily ground to include over 135 chapters and currently serves more than 7,500 youth through partnerships with local school districts. TeamMates now has chapters thought Nebraska and Iowa and recently opened it first chapters in Kansas and Wyoming.

SEM NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY “BACK TO SCHOOL BAG”PROJECT
Mrs. Deb Jones, NHS Adviser SEM National Honor Society members met on August 8 after athletic practices to make “Back to School Bags” for each of our elementary students in Pre School through Sixth Grade. Each of the bags included pencils, erasers, crayons, red checking pencils, pens, highlighters, glue sticks, and a
star student bracelet. We also gave a “Back to School” letter to each of the students with their “Back to School” bag to welcome them to a new and exciting school year at SEM. We delivered the “Back to School Bags” to the students on the first
day of school. They were very excited to receive them and we appreciate their enthusiasm!
Our National Honor Society members this year include: Mekenzie Beattie, Kevin Boteo, Megan Day, Mikayla Dittmar, Erica Eacker, Colin Ibach, Bradi Nichols, Sara Ripp, Jasmine Vasquez, Megan Whitesel, Trace Claflin, Micah Eggleston, Trent Elsen, Liz Kearney, Jason Line, Zerron Schroder, Nathan Schroeder, Thomas Schwarz, Sami Sleicher, and Sage Williams.
We are looking forward to a fun and exciting year filled with many community service projects to benefit our NHS members, our school, and our communities.
Is Nebraska Flat? —— Mrs. Laurie Smith
The Fourth Grade students have been studying the elevation of Nebraska. The students were asked this question at the beginning of the study… “Is Nebraska flat or does the land rise up?” The students then discussed the rivers of Nebraska and how they flow… East to West or West to East? The students came to the conclusion that Nebraska has to be elevated on one side because if it was just flat then the water would just stay where it was and not run at all. The students came to the conclusion that Nebraska has to be elevated to the west and get lower as you go to the east as that is how the water flows in
the rivers. After some research the students found that in Western Nebraska the elevation at Panorama Point is 5,424 feet and in Falls City the elevation is 1010 feet for a difference of 4,414 feet from West to East. Stay tuned for an update as to how the students will represent Nebraska’s Elevation.
The students and staff of SEM schools would like to welcome two new staff members to the para-educator team. Mrs. Brenda Rhode will be taking over the cited position in the pre-school and Mrs. Megan Hunt will be working as a paraprofessional in the special education department. Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Rhode join an excellent and experienced staff including; Mrs. Lori Nichols - elementary special education, Ms. Kathy Peterson - elementary special education, Mrs. Peg Stevens - elementary special education, Mrs. Mandy Bosak - reading
interventionist, and Mrs. Dillia Castellonos - ELL specialist.

Thoughts from Mr. Doud
During Homecoming week, the senior parents put a special spin for the Thursday night before our volleyball and football games. The event started with an outstanding meal for our students. This was followed by a “knockerball” activity on the football field and a rousing bonfire to conclude the evening. I wanted to address the knockerball activity as I was overwhelmed by the positive “Small Town” mentality of our school and communities. If you didn’t get a chance to see the Knockerball or climb into one, you missed an opportunity of a lifetime. This giant inflatable ball protected you from other people that were charging you in an effort to knock you to the ground. Everyone was having a great time and the playtime switched to the adults. I couldn’t resist and don’t mind looking like a fool for a good cause. I climbed into the “knockerball” and proceeded to run around the football field looking like an idiot targeting someone to knock
down. Trust me, I didn’t have to go far as others already had a bead on me to get me out of the competition. After an early exit, I noticed that I was missing one of my hearing aides. I began looking on the ground and students and parents noticed and began looking without hesitation. This went on for over a half hour and at that time I pleaded with the students to continue playing with the knockerballs. After several requests, they continued but parents and students continued, ON THEIR HAND AND KNEES, looking for my hearing aid. It was never found but what I learned from our parents, students and community will never be forgotten. The support that was shared that evening looking for my hearing aid sealed the deal that I am at the right place and this is my home. Thank you SO MUCH for the support from everyone. You made me a believer in being part of that “small town” feeling!
TeamMates
Established in 1991 by Tom and Nancy Osborne, TeamMates has provided over 31,000 youth with the support and encouragement of a mentor by remaining faithful to the program’s core values of commitment to youth, safety, inclusion, and integrity and trust. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. With the philosophy that all youth can benefit from a mentoring relationship, the TeamMates Program has strived to be the gold standard of school-based mentoring. At the end of the 2015-2016 school year TeamMates was serving nearly 8,000 youth across 137 chapters in Nebraska and Iowa and will be opening chapters in Kansas and Wyoming in the next year.
While at York, I was the program coordinator for the elementary, middle, and high school as well at the two parochial schools. In my three years as coordinator, our program grew from 80 matches to over 165 students and we added the two parochial schools. Through this experience, I was able to see the value of the program. It is a goal at SEM to provide our students with every opportunity to be well rounded and successful. That is why we are looking at starting the TeamMates program. Representatives from TeamMates will be at the October 14 football game to share and answer questions about the program. If you have questions, would like to know more about TeamMates or how you can be a part of the program, please give me a call at 308-752-2925.

Nebraska SHARP Survey: Our school is participating in a county wide Nebraska SHARP Survey that includes Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey (NRPFSS), Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) on Thursday, October 20, 2016. These surveys are commissioned by the Buffalo County Community Partners who have conducted this same survey in our school since 2000. The survey tool is developed by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and is conducted nationally and statewide.
9
The survey will ask about the health behaviors of students in grades 8th -12th. This data can assist our school district by providing outcome data as we review and revise our school policies and monitor our quality educational programs. The questions ask about nutrition, physical activities, injuries, mental health, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use, sexual activity, and seat belt use. A sample survey is available on the Buffalo County Community Partners website (www.bcchp.org/assessments). This survey is completely anonymous and survey responses cannot be traced back to individual students.
In past few years, this survey data has assisted Buffalo County Community Partners and other partners secure federal and state grant funding reaching $3 million dollars. These grant dollars provide substance abuse prevention in the schools and communities, reduce youth obesity programming and address programming to reduce youth suicide. The funding from these grants does impact each Buffalo County school. For more information regarding grant funded programs, contact Denise Zwiener or Ariane Arensdorf at Buffalo County Community Partners at (308)865-2284 or by email at [email protected] or [email protected].
If you prefer to have your student opt out of this survey, please send a note with your son or daughter requesting to opt out of taking this survey. If you do chose to opt out, please send the note to school by October 13, 2016.
Student Council Update
Homecoming Wrap Up: SEM students definitely followed their Homecoming theme of “Go For the Gold” to heart. A thrilling Friday night football victory, the crowning of our royalty and a fun filled dance in the Eddyville gym capped off a great day for the mustangs. The SEM 2016 Homecoming Royalty are King Darius Eggleston and Queen Sage Williams. The Royal court is attended by Prince Nathan Schroeder and Princess Melissa Baldarrma. The attendants are Duke Trace Claflin and Duchess Samantha Sleicher. Crown bearers for the evening were first graders Sarah Gonzalez, and Casey Lubbers. Congratulations to ALL!
A very special thank you to the senior parents for their HUGE assistance with food for the evening. No one went hungry! Thank you to Mr. Beavers for his leadership and help with the art projects. The addition of the face painting before the volleyball and football games was fun for the students and displayed school spirit.
Several members of the Student Council served as ambassadors for the Parent/Teacher Conferences. These students shared their smiles, encouragement and directions to parents coming for the conferences. Thank you for giving of your time on a day off!
October 24-28 our student council will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Several committees have been formed and our students are planning several activities for the week. Some of the activities include; Daily Trivia/Announcements, PK-12 “drug free” door decorating contest, positive locker messages, daily dress up with themes, Hay Bale Art and poster messages/ribbons around the building. The student council is excited to spread the message of living a healthy, drug free life!
10
Morning Announcements:
Members of the student council are working to put together a format for morning announcements. Students will read the daily announcements at 8:00 and will include a “thought for day” and mustang minute as well and honoring our county by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.
Friends Program:
April Roggasch visited with our juniors and seniors last week about participating in the “Friends Program”. This program matches junior and senior volunteers with our K-5 students. Students that are willing to take on the “big friend” label meet with students on a weekly basis to play games, talk and be a role model. Students from our Youth Advisory Board shared the program and encouraged students to participate in the program.
The SEM chapter of the Future Farmers of America have come up with an outstanding idea to share thoughts of kindness to their fellow students?
The Kindness Locker was created this year by the FFA students and is a great opportunity for student to let someone know that they are appreciated and “AWESOME”.
Although the locker was created by the FFA, it was designed for all SEM students to share thoughts if kindness!
It’s a great day to be a MUSTANG!

S.E.M. Parent Teachers Conference was a success!
Educational research shows that parents who are engaged in their students education increase the chances for that students success. We are delighted to
report that over 52% of 9-12 parents were in attendance, and 86% of elementary parents were in attendance!

The photo on the left was taken in September of 2015 and the photo on the right was taken in September of 2016, what a difference a year makes.
SEM building project in nearing completion. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October! As of right now, the final stages of the classrooms in the new addition are almost complete. The new gymnasium is being prepped for the new wood floor, and the second and third floor restrooms are almost ready to be opened.
The school is planning an open house celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for late October. Please follow us at www.semmustangs.org for announcement.
Loft area being designed with the reclaimed wood from the old gym.
The photo on the left is the tongue and groove wood that was the exterior construction.
The photo on the right is the wooden arches that gave the old gym it’s unique shape.
