What is self - talk

Is a communication we have with our selves. This communication is really important in our daily life.

self talk also can affect motivation. e.g If someone is trying to lose weight and

tells himself that he’s looking slimmer and feeling good, he is improving his motivation with self talk.

USING SELF TALK TO ENHANCE CONCENTRATION

Self - talk has many potential uses beside enhancing concentration including breaking bad habits, initiating action, sustaining effort and acquiring skill.

Categorize into three types:1.Positive (motivation)2.Instructional3.Negative

• Positive self - talk typically focuses on increasing energy, effort, positive attitude e.g. I can do it.

• Instructional self - talk usually helps the individual focus on the technical or task related aspects of performance in order to improve execution e.g. keep your eyes on the ball.

• Negative self - talk is critical and self demeaning and gets in the way of a person’s reaching goals. It is counterproductive and anxiety producing. Saying things like “that was a stupid shot” does not enhance performance or create positive emotion.

6 Rules of Creating Self-talk For Performance Execution.

i.) Keep phrases short & specific.ii.) use first person & present tense.iii.) construct +ve phrases.iv.) say phrases with meaning 7 attention.v.) speak kindly to yourself.vi.) repeat phrases often.

THOUGHT STOPPING

stop before harm performance. concentrate on undesired thought briefly.

- use cue@trigger to stop thought- clean mind

trigger can be simple word, snapping finger & hitting hand against thight. most effective cue depends on person when start think –ve, just say ‘stop’ & focus on task-related cue. once mastered, try saying ‘stop’ quietly to yourself should practice thought stopping continuously.
