She uses reactive paint containing real iron particles as a base for this body of work. there yetaggie toppins

In this looping video, footage of diverse American landscapes as seen from the passenger side of a moving automobile are spliced together and presented as an impossible journey. The landscapes depicted are geographically different, but vague enough that each is only describable in relation to another. The viewer is placed in the position of interpreting the specificity of each scene as it relentlessly passes. When the video is projected onto a store window, it plays on the perception of space: outdoor space is integrated into indoor space; the window becomes a portal between the stationary and the kinetic. The notion of a final destination is subordinate to constant journey.

about the installation

Aggie Toppins is a graphic designer and an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is principal of The Official Studio, a design practice that focuses on print, identity, exhibition, and interactive projects for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. Aggie also founded The Unofficial Press to contextualize her independent studio activity in which she explores conceptually driven artist books and other projects that use design to engage in cultural discourse. As an artist, Aggie is interested in narrative structures, open-ended meaning, democratized media, and merging concepts of public and private memory with myth, identity, and place. Aggie lives in Chattanooga with her husband Jason and their two silly dogs.

Two Million, One Hundred Thirty Thousand, Four Hundred and Eighty Paceschris cassidy & ruby wescoat

The video footage in this installation retraces the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears from Tennessee through Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas before ending in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The video was captured on local roads that closely map the 19th century passage of the Cherokee of Eastern Tennessee, capturing the distance traveled, the change from summer to winter, and the immense changes to the landscape since the 1830s. As a pedestrian walks through the space in front of the window, motion sensor equipped software will advance the video a few frames, moving the imaged landscape one pace westward for every pace actually walked on the sidewalk. The video will only move forward, towards the west, no matter which way the pedestrians are moving, echoing the inexorable westward movement of the forced relocation of the Cherokee.

the cotton clubanna carll

Influenced by my love of jazz, The Cotton Club is a musical composition based on two great musicians—Charlie Bird Parker & Chet Baker. I wanted to create a piece that broadcasts how much music is a symbol of unity—my two musicians are back-to-back filling the city with their unique visual sound. This piece is a canvas mural using acrylic, charcoal and gold leaf mediums. The mural is finished as a wall hanging—similar to a tapestry and stitched using the unique book arts binding method known as the Japanese Stab-stitch.

about the installation

Local artist, Anna Carll, began her career as an illustrator and graphic designer with a strong background in art history. In 1992 Carll migrated toward fine art primarily as a self-taught painter. Carll’s distinctive style finds it’s roots in stained glass design. Her studio work is occupied by developing a unique textured vocabulary combined with an intense color palette. Carll creates a realm of images that are grounded in the figurative with aspects of the abstract—challenging the viewers perception of a spacial reality. Her subject matter is derived from a love of music and literature. Carll develops her compositions within an environment of texture and color that engages the viewer in an emotional dialogue with the visual story. As a recent transplant, Carll has embraced Chattanooga by participating in public art projects such as the McCallie Walls Mural Project with her seminal piece; The House of Wisdom. For purchasing inquiries: [email protected] size (including dowels): 64” x 86”Purchase price: $9,450.00www.annacarll.com

progress and pride;a look inside patten towersgreg pond & amy johnson

These windows depict members of the community of Patten Towers. Their home has great historical significance for Chattanooga. The construction of the Hotel Patten (1908) pronounced the city’s economic progress. The changes the building underwent mirrored the city’s fortunes through the 20th century but recently their stories have begun to diverge and the building has been the subject of scrutiny and debate. Today it stands as an enigma for many within the urban core, an opaque structure in the city’s vision of the future. Our intention is to render the community more transparent to its neighbors; acknowledging the value of a diverse, connected population for all Chattanooga’s residents. We want to provide the people of Patten Towers with the opportunity to share their own stories. These photographs are part of an ongoing project funded by the MakeWork Foundation.

book flockhollie berry & rudy elizondo

Book Flock is about the transporting power of reading. Like all books, these do not come to life without the interaction of a reader. As you pass by, bird-like books suspended from the ceiling will flap and flutter. A reading nook is available for you to sit and enjoy a free book from the Little Library. On the wall is a question about reading: “What is the first book you ever read?”, “What page turner could you not put down?”, “What book made you sad?”. You have the opportunity to share your response with future passers-by. All this to remind us…“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.”― Joseph Brodsky

about the installation

Hollie Berry and Rudy Elizondo are the husband and wife team collaborating to bring Book Flock to life. Rudy is an engineer and maker with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston. Hollie is a visual artist with a degree in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin. She paints, creates artists books, and recently completed a mural called Four Horsewomen on McCallie Avenue. She is looking forward to this opportunity to share her vision through public art once again. The couple moved to Chattanooga in 2012 largely for the natural beauty, walkability, and historic character of the Scenic City. They live on the Northshore with their two cats.

subramanya (animated)kevin bate

A vintage take on a modern installation, Subramanya (animated) is what 1990s screensavers would look like if they were made in the 1890s. This work is an attempt to mimic high technology pieces but to accomplish the feel through means almost totally analog.Your guide through the piece, the likeness of Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi, awakens at your arrival to share a few moments with you as your paths intertwine. Allow him the chance to observe you for a bit and then offer some advice for your day - perhaps multiple pieces of advice. It will be up to you to decide which element of insightful wisdom is meant for you. Concentrate and his wisdom for you will become evident. Now, go in peace.

STRATANOOGAtrey cook & hayden crihfield

“STRATANOOGA” is a short art film about the city of Chattanooga, her defining landmarks and architecture, and beautifully diverse citizens. This style of conglomeration was inspired by the woman I love, when I first traveled with her to New York City. I saw a fair amount of the city through my lens, and since I captured hundreds of our moments on film and stills, I decided to layer them all together to create an amalgamation of our experience together, thus giving birth to this method. The varying layers blended together present the city in a lively and saturated scope. With all of us fused together with one another and the surroundings of our city, it seems something new is revealed. We are more interesting together than we are alone.
