The Patten Pages The William Patten Newsletter for Parents and Children

At the end of the last school year, we submitted an

application to the Council for Learning Outside the

Classroom to renew its LOtC Quality Mark. Schools

awarded the quality mark have demonstrated –

a commitment to ensuring that all learners

have access to good quality educational

experiences beyond the classroom walls

(their) engagement in an ongoing process to ensure frequent, continuous and progressive learning outside the classroom opportunities are integrated into the curriculum

The school was visited by an assessor on the last day

of the previous half term and has again been awarded

the quality mark but this time at gold level!!! This

means that William Patten is now a nationally

recognised leader of learning outside the

classroom. The assessor’s report acknowledges many

aspects of school practice and to achieve this level of

award many things were taken into account including

– LOtC in and around the school grounds, progression

in and regularity of educational visits, planning for

school trips, child voice and the role of school council,

inclusion and cross curricular approaches.

This award would not have been possible were it not

for the support of our families and the help provided by

parents and carers on school trips, as well as special

events in and around the school such as Tastes of the

World. The final comment from the assessor at the

end of the evaluation report is particularly positive ‘It

was a real pleasure to visit William Patten Primary and

meet some of the staff and pupils. The school has a

strong culture of continual improvement with the

flexibility to allow challenges to be met quickly. They

have made enormous strides in their LOtC

provision…and…I have no hesitation in making the

award to this excellent school.’

Thank you again for your contribution to this aspect of

the school’s work.

Dear parents,

The children have enjoyed telling us about their

holidays and they have settled back into the routine

again very quickly after half term.

It was lovely to see so many of you last night at

Parents’ Evening and I hope you enjoyed looking at

the wonderful work your children have been doing. If

your appointment is next week, I look forward to

seeing you then. I will be in the bottom hall, if you

would like to come and say hello!

We sent home the letter about Tastes of the World

this week. Tastes of the World is a fantastic annual

event at William Patten which the children look

forward to very much, they are always so excited

about being able to share a dish which is important to

their family, with their friends. The event will be

supported by work in class that asks the children to

think about questions such as

Can I make connections between my own life

and those of children in a different part of the

world?

Can I discover what knowledge and links my

class already have with other countries?

Can I compare differences and similarities with

food and food preferences locally and

internationally

Ensuring the children are aware of their responsibility

as, and are ready to be, global citizens is a hugely

important part of the work we do at William Patten.

I am delighted to say that we have been awarded the

LotC (Learning Outside the Classroom) Gold award

for all the work we do to enrich our curriculum. We

are very proud to have been given the award and the

fact that we got gold, clearly demonstrates our

commitment to providing our children with a rich,

vibrant and varied curriculum. A huge thank you to

the staff team for all their hard work, but particular

thanks must go to Craig, who has overall

responsibility for our curriculum and who collated the

huge evidence base to show the assessor!

Have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes

Invisible Flash Theatre Company

Year 2 children participated in an interactive

story-telling workshop this week called

"Zooooooooooooom!". The actors from the

Invisible Flash Theatre Co. brought the story to

life, all about a wheel chair bound girl called

Loretta, who had a dream to become the fastest

girl ever! The children joined in with actions and

singing as the story unfolded. They then had the

chance to invent their own story after the

performance, using their imaginations and

creativity! A very enjoyable experience had by all!

Language of the Month

The new language of the month is Bengali.

Bengali (Bangla), like Hindi, is descended from

Sanskrit and belongs to the huge Indo-European

group of languages. It is written in a variety of the

Sanskrit Devanagari alphabet. Bengali is mainly

spoken in Bangladesh and in the Indian state of

West Bengal. It is estimated that worldwide there

are over 200 million Bengali speakers. Bengali is

the seventh most spoken native language in the

world by population. Here are the phrases we will

be speaking in Bengali around the school this

month:

Good Morning- Shupru pat

Good afternoon- Shuphu Shonda

Thank you- Don-no-bad

Young Mathematicians Award

A team from William Patten recently took part in the

first round of a national maths competition. The

National Young Mathematicians Award is organised

by Explore Learning in collaboration with Nrich and

Cambridge University.

Round 1 took place at the Explore Learning Centre

on Essex Road. Team members had to work

together to solve a never before seen maths

problem and a number of local schools took part

over two days.

The William Patten Team - Amy, Ethan, Lola and

Mika (Y6) were excellent school representatives

and worked together with enthusiasm.

Teams progressing to round 2 will be announced

next week and the winning team will take part in the

final round in Cambridge. Fingers crossed William

Patten!

Air Quality Audit

William Patten Primary is one of the first schools to

have taken part in an Air Quality Audit funded by the

Mayor of London.

Selected schools each receive a detailed audit,

carried out by a transport and environment

consultancy. This reviews ways in which emissions

and exposure to pollution in and around the school

can be reduced. The audits also highlight key

interventions to reduce exposure and are carried

out on behalf of the Greater London Authority and

Transport for London.

As part of the schedule for the day, children in KS2

took part in a special raising awareness interactive

assembly. The audits are expected to be published

before March. You can read a recent article about

the Air Quality Audit at William Patten from the

Hackney Citizen at the link below -

Dance sessions for Diwali

To celebrate Diwali, children in Years 1, 2 and 3

took part in a Bollywood dance workshop just

before half term, led by a specialist dancer. The

children first learnt about the traditions and origins

of Bollywood dancing then practised key steps and

techniques used in many Bollywood dance routines.

Each class rehearsed a short routine before

performing to the rest of the school in a celebratory

assembly! In our Diwali assembly, the children

learnt about the customs and routines that many

Hindus and Sikhs follow to celebrate the festival.

They listened to different stories and legends

remembered by many Hindus and Sikhs during this

time of the year. Meg very kindly spoke about her

own family experiences and shared with us how she

prepares for Diwali. Some of the children were lucky

enough to be dressed by Meg in very special

material that she uses for her saris!

Year 1 Maths Workshops

We will be holding maths workshops for parents

and carers of children in Year 1 this term.

Children will be able to join their parents and carers

during the workshops to participate in a number of

varied and fun maths activities.

The workshops will take place as follows:

Asima’s class - Thursday 23rd November from

9.30 to 10.30am

Natalie’s class – Friday 24th November from 9.30

to 10.30am.

The focus will be on place value and how the school

teaches for mastery.

Further guidance to support home help will be

provided at the end of the session. We hope that

you will be able to join us if your child is in Year 1.

Roof Garden update

As part of our Roof Garden Project, School Council have been extremely busy, planting over 400 bulbs including daffodils, mixed crocus, hyacinths and many more, to make the garden even more beautiful! The roof garden is a fantastic space to relax and great for outdoor learning opportunities across all subjects. It goes without saying that we are all incredibly excited for spring, to see our growing bulbs!

Tristan’s grandma came to visit …

Year 2 had a special treat on Tuesday 31st October. We had Tristan T’s grandma (Bama Thillainathan) come in to visit us to talk about the religion of Hinduism, as part of our RE unit on Hindu Gods. Bama shared wonderful pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses and shared special statues and objects which we passed around to look at and hold. It was lovely to have a family member come in to share their knowledge and wisdom with the children. Thank you Bama, and Tristan T too!!

We have a new winner at the top of the chart! Aimee’s class lead the way with 98.5%. Well done 3A.

Rec Leah/Maria 95.2% Rec Wendy 97.4% Y1 Asima 97.2% Y1 Natalie 97.9% Y2 Kim 98.1% Y2 Tanya 97.1% Y3 Aimee 98.5% Y3 Christine 95.9% Y4 Helen 96.9% Y4 Marcus 95.7% Y5 Diane 95.4% Y5 Marion 97.8% Y6 Jon 97.5% Y6 Ben 96.1%

There has been a slight drop in attendance levels for a couple of classes; we are hoping this will improve during the next few weeks. Also, please remember to call or email the school office by 9.30am if your child is going to be absent.

PTFA News

The Winter Fair is on Sunday 3rd December and

we need your help to make it happen!

We have coordinators for most of the main areas

but we still need one or two people to volunteer

for the following roles which we need to get filled

asap to get the fair off the ground:

1. Overall coordinator of the fair (not as

daunting as it sounds since we have most of

the main areas sorted) but we need someone

to be the point of contact and responsible for

the overall plan.

2. Raffle coordinator (responsible for

requesting and collecting prizes for the raffle

in the run up to the fair) - this is a very

important job since the raffle is a huge

fundraiser.

The coordination roles tend to work well if a

couple of people take them on and work

together.

We also need lots of people to volunteer on the

day for various jobs including organising the

Bake Off and helping Santa.

Kindness Cup

The latest winner of the Kindness Cup is Divine

Nlemoha. He was nominated by Kezia, also in

Year 6, who wanted Divine’s friendly nature and

sportsmanship to be acknowledged “Divine

always plays Ace at playtime and when someone

gets him out, he doesn’t take it personally, he just

smiles. The only time he doesn’t smile is when

he’s concentrating on something. He is always

friendly to people around him and doesn’t hesitate

to be kind to others”. Divine’s name has been

added to a leaf on our Kindness Tree.

Many happy returns to the children who celebrated their birthday in the last fortnight: Rufus Worfolk Smith, Max Olley, Freddie Pashby, Louis Iskander-Reynolds, Pablo Grijalba, Kiri Weldon, Isaac Church, Shamoya Lawrence, Ed Richards, Elisha Twitchett, Calum Dearie, Sergey Arif, Evie Nathan-Palmer, Renee Ferreira, Ruby-May Byrne McClune, Zachary Alves, Khaleel Small, Yusra Ali, Floris Gerrard, Mohinder Monks Takhar, Aya Bloom, Stella Dusheiko and Cleo French.

School Council feedback Diane meets with the School Council every fortnight. These are the latest topics discussed by the children and the responses to them:

Kindness cup tea party

Children have asked if they receive the Kindness cup, can they come straight to the Headteacher’s tea party? The Kindness Cup is part of Place2Be and so is separate from the tea parties. Children will only be able to come to the tea party if they have received 5 Good Deeds nominations.

Nature Day

The children would like to have a Nature day (making bug hotels, bird houses etc) in the spring and we have put a provisional date in the diary for March. We are looking forward to it! Sax/clarinet for International Evening

The children who play saxophone and clarinet would like to perform at International Evening. The programme has not been decided yet, so we will see if this is possible nearer the time.

Water fountains fixed The water fountains in the small playground have been fixed and we are waiting for the new units for the big playground to arrive.

Swimming in every year group

Children go swimming in Year 4. We can’t go swimming in every year group because it would be too expensive and it would also mean the children would miss out on other activities.

Ice skating Children wanted to go ice skating. Year 6 can choose ice skating as part of their activity programme after the national tests in May. As a trip, it doesn’t fit in with any of our curriculum topics.

Calm Corner is too noisy We have reorganised the lunchtime staff duty rota, so that there is an adult near the Calm Corner, to make sure that children do not run through the space.

Gymnastics area We don’t really have enough space in the playground to make a dedicated gymnastics area as we have more adults doing activities and games in the playground now, so we won’t be able to do that.

Playground swap KS2 children do not have the opportunity to play in the small playground very much (unless their class gets the Starline or if they are FFS) and they would like to. They would also like the more opportunities to play with the smaller children / siblings. From next week, Year 3 can go in the small playground on Monday morning at playtime, Year 4 on Tuesday, Year 5 on Wednesday and Year 6 on Thursday.

Expectation talk for clubs

Children have reported that some children are behaving inappropriately in clubs because they see clubs as different from school. This is spoiling it for other children. Sian has talked to all clubs this week about expectations for behaviour and she has spoken to the club leaders.

Lunch order Y6 Year 6 say they always go last for lunch! We do the lunch lines in order. We do Year 3, 4, 5 and then 6. The next day we go Year 4, 5, 6 and then 3. The next day is 5, 6, 3 and then 4 and so on. So all year groups take it in turns.

Leaning on the big nets The School Council are worried that some children are leaning on the new nets round the football area and that they will break. We have spoken to all the children in assembly and asked them to be very careful and not touch the nets, so that they do not stretch.
