ACTION RESEARCH DEPARTMENT ON SUPPORTING ENFORCEMENT OF THE NEW CRIMINAL LAWS

The new Criminal Procedure Code and Sentencing Act endorsed by the Legislature-Parliament in August 2017, to enter into effect from August 2018, will usher in major changes in the operation of the criminal justice system in Nepal. It will replace the General Code that has been in effect in Nepal since 1963, and amended on several occasions. While the new code is more refined and detailed, there will be several challenges in implementation given the existing culture and human capacity of justice sector institutions and paucity of facilities available for the scientific investigation and prosecution of crimes. For the purpose of contributing to the criminal justice and policing reform implementation programme, the ACTION RESEARCH Department is initiating a research and resource development project on Supporting enforcement of the new Criminal Laws to ensure uniformity in implementation of procedures for investigation of criminal cases. Action Research Department is said to release detailed information regarding the project in the following months.
