Selected Data on Public High Schools and Zip Codes in NOVA’s Service Area

Introduction

This report provides information on the high schools and zip codes located in jurisdictions served by Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). The 56 “feeder” high schools are located in the following jurisdictions: Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Falls Church City, Loudoun County, Manassas City, Manassas Park City, and Prince William County. This report first presents data on each high school, organized by jurisdiction. The data, presented in table format, show for each high school:

• Enrollment by grade; • The number of 2012 high school graduates and the number and percentage of those

graduates who subsequently enrolled at NOVA in the Fall 2012 semester; • The racial and ethnic breakdown of students (as of academic year 2011-12); • College enrollment patterns of the high school’s 2012 graduates; and • The number and percentage of the high school’s students who were eligible for free or

reduced price meals in 2012. The report then presents the average SAT score of each jurisdiction, followed by demographic data on the zip codes located in each jurisdiction.

Explanatory Notes for Tables A brief explanation for each table within each high school profile is provided below. All data in this report were retrieved from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) unless otherwise noted. High School Enrollment This table shows the number of students enrolled in each grade in the high school during the 2011-12 academic year. VDOE collects data each year on September 30th. Graduates at NOVA This table shows the number of graduates and completers at each high school as well as the number and percentage of students from that high school who enrolled at NOVA in the Fall 2012 semester. VDOE collects data on graduates and completers annually in the fall. In this table, “Graduates” refers to both graduates – who received either a standard diploma, advanced studies diploma, special diploma, modified standard diploma, or a general achievement diploma – as well as completers – students who receive either a Certificate of Program Completion, a GED Certificate, or an Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP). Race/Ethnicity of Students This table shows the racial/ethnic composition of students at each high school by percentage of total student enrollment in 2011-12. College Enrollment These data are from VDOE’s Postsecondary Enrollment Reports, which satisfy a federal reporting requirement for State Fiscal Stabilization Fund (SFSF) indicator (c)(11). This table shows the number and percentage of a high school’s graduates who enrolled in an Institution of

Page 15: Selected Data on Public High Schools and Zip Codes in NOVA ...€¦ · Selected Data on Public High Schools and Zip Codes in NOVA’s Service Area . Research Report No. 141-13 . Office

2

Higher Education (IHE) within 16 months of graduating high school. The table also breaks down enrollment across four-year public, four-year private, and two-year institutions. Postsecondary enrollment data include only graduates as defined by Virginia’s Federal Graduation Indicator (FGI). The FGI is calculated by following a cohort of students who started the ninth grade in the same school year and includes students who earned Virginia’s standard or advanced studies diplomas only. Students who earned other Virginia Board of Education approved diplomas and students who were not counted in the initial cohort of ninth grade students are not counted as graduates in the FGI. As a result, the number of “Graduates” in this table differs from the number used in the “Graduates at NOVA” table, described above. School Nutrition Program Eligibility This table shows the number and percentage of students at each high school who were eligible for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Under the NSLP, students from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. Those with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level are eligible for reduced‐price meals, for which students can be charged no more than 40 cents. The number and percentage used in this table thus reflects the number and percentage of students at each school with incomes below 185 percent of the poverty level. Average SAT Score of NOVA Feeder School Districts This table shows the average SAT score, out of a maximum score of 2400, of each school district, as well as the statewide and national average scores. District scores were retrieved from each district’s website, while statewide and national scores were retrieved from the College Board.1 Demographics by NOVA’s Service Area Zip Codes This section of the report shows data in two tables for each jurisdiction. The first table shows the racial and ethnic breakdown of residents by zip code. The second table shows median income by zip code. All data in this section were retrieved from the U.S. Census Bureau (American FactFinder).

1The average total SAT score for Falls Church City was retrieved from the district’s website; however, the individual section scores (Reading, Math, Writing) for Falls Church were retrieved from: http://www.k12schoolrank.com/webapp/Virginia/Falls-Church/George-Mason-High-School.htm#tab4.
