The papers of the SEIU Secretary-Treasurer's Files: Affiliate Officers were placedin the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in February of 1994 by SEIU. The collectionwas opened for research in February of 1999.

Founded as the Building Service Employees International Union in 1921 with acore of janitors, window washers and elevator operators, the modern SEIU grew tobecome the largest health care union and second largest public employee union in NorthAmerica by the late-1980s. Chartered affiliates operate throughout North America. For ahistory, please consult A Need For Valor: The Roots of the Service EmployeesInternational Union, 1902-1992.

This collection contains information about executive affairs, officer appointmentsand elections, and membership activity at the local union, joint council, and stateconference levels. Many local unions and several joint councils have either merged intosingle organizations, or had their charters revoked during the period covered by thecollection. Consequently, certain local unions have changed their designations and/ortrade affiliations. Please consult the “SEIU Charter Book” for complete informationregarding mergers and revoked charters. Also, check the “SEIU Charter Book” and theactual files for other names that affiliates were given, as the names occasionally changed.For organizational descriptions of affiliates please consult the SEIU Constitution andBylaws.
