Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to the penultimate week of Term 1. Next week promises to be a very busy week with Parent/Teacher

Interviews, the Easter Liturgy, Mud Warrior and Cross Country. The ‘Mud Warrior Challenge’ should be a great

event to raise funds for Caritas. We encourage all students to take part (if they can’t complete an obstacle, they

can run around it). I have coerced many staff and Fr Hermi to be competitors on the day. Parents and families

are welcome to attend and cheer their children on from 11.15 am.

We have experienced a productive and positive start to the year and encourage the children to have a good rest during the holidays, so that they can arrive back at school next term fresh and ready to continue the rigour of learning.

Vale Rodney Stevenson On behalf of the St Mary’s community, we offer our sincere condolences to Dusty and Bec, on the passing of Rodney last Friday, 21 March 2019. May he rest in peace.

Parent/Teacher Interviews These interviews will take place on Tuesday, 2 April 2019 from 3.15pm. I strongly encourage all parents to make

an appointment to discuss their child’s progress this year.

Pupil Free Day Term 1 A reminder that the school term finishes on Thursday, 4 April 2019. St Mary’s Staff and all other Toowoomba Catholic Schools will be involved with in-servicing on Friday, 5 April 2019.

Open Day 2019 – Friday 24 May (Prep – Year 10) The school is holding an Open Day on Friday 24 May. We will start the day with an assembly at 8.45am, followed by open classrooms whilst the students work, until 10.45am. A morning tea will be provided at 10.45am for all visitors to the school.

time during the morning. Visitors will be able visit all our classes from Prep to the Secondary School and see the wonderful teaching and learning that is taking place in the school. Please spread the word to your friends and family about our Open Day and encourage any prospective parents to attend on the day. (Grandparents are welcome too). I’m sure that most of the children would love to see their parents visiting the school whilst they are learning.

New Secondary Building We are awaiting the final financial considerations to be completed by the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office and we expect construction to commence by the end of April.

Enrolling for Prep 2020 We are currently accepting enrolment applications for students to commence Prep next year. Children born between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015 are eligible for enrolment. I particularly urge parents with children already at the school not to delay, as enrolment numbers are already healthy. We will have to “cap” the number of students in Prep as we do not have the space to hold a third prep class in 2020.

Quote of the Week “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.”

John Paul II

Best wishes for the week ahead. Brett Pollard Principal

With Week 9 almost behind us, holidays are beckoning. Before we get to holidays however, Week 10 is jam packed with lots of fantastic whole school activities to finish what has been a great first term. PLEASE NOTE DATES CAREFULLY AS CHANGES HAVE OCCURRED:

Tuesday Parent Teacher Interviews – 3.15pm to 6.30pm Centenary Centre (all year levels)

Easter Liturgy – 9am to 9.30am – Centenary Centre

Mud Warrior – 10am to 1.30pm – school grounds Wednesday Volleyball vs Inglewood SHS – 3.15pm to 4.45pm Centenary Centre Thursday Cross Country – 8.25am to 1.00pm – Riddles Oval (see information below) Friday PUPIL FREE DAY

Amongst all of the exciting events that we have on, the end of term sees a strong emphasis on finalising assessment and units of work for the term, particularly in the secondary school. It is important that students maintain study and homework routines as appropriate for their year level to ensure that they finish the term with the best outcomes possible.

Representative Sport Over the next week we have a large number of St Mary’s student attending MacIntyre Zone trials for Rugby League, Netball, Soccer (Wednesday 3 April) and Basketball (Monday 1 April). We wish all of our trialists the very best of luck and look forward to seeing a good representation of our students progress through to Darling Downs trials.

State Swimming Championships This week has seen St Mary’s very strongly represented at Chandler in the State Swimming Championships. At the time of writing there was still a day of swimming to go, but already our students have achieved excellent results. Congratulations to the following St Mary’s Darling Down Representatives:

Wilbur Wood (U10) 9th 50m Back, 12th 100m Breast, 4 x 50m Free Relay 8th, Medley Relay 8th

Scarlett Richards (U10) Medley Relay 13th, 4 x 50m Relay 17th , 24th 50m Butterfly

Billy Spicer (U10) 4 x 50m Free Relay 8th, Medley Relay – 8th

Fred Prosser (U11) Medley Relay 18th, 4 x 50m Relay 18th Molly Jekyll (U12) Medley Relay 13th, 4 x 50m Relay 12th

One of the challenges of going to a big meet like a State Championships is performing under what is often a self-inflicted pressure in a new performance environment. In addition to the great results above, it has been fantastic to hear that in most events our swimmers achieved Personal Bests (PBs) which in itself is brilliant. Well done Wilbur, Scarlett, Billy, Fred and Molly!

St Mary’s Parish School Cross Country Next Thursday 4 April is our whole school cross country event. This promises to be a fantastic opportunity for individual and house competition and a great way to finish Term 1 as a whole school.

Easter celebrations are just around the corner. The lead up to Easter, in particular Good Friday, is a sombre time in the Church’s calendar. It’s when we remember Christ’s suffering and ultimate sacrifice.

All students will attend an Easter liturgy next TUESDAY 2nd at 9am (before Mud Warrior) in the Centenary Centre. We warmly extend an invitation to any families, friends or parishioners who would like to join us.

Weekend Mass This weekend Mass will be celebrated at 9am on Sunday morning. After Mass, families have been invited to stay behind and join Fr Hermi for morning tea to help celebrate his birthday on Monday 1st April!

We wish Fr Hermi a very happy birthday for Monday!

Third Sunday of Lent 24th March 2019

Peter goes to a boarding school in the Solomon Islands which has experienced water shortages for 60 years. Previously, students would have to walk kilometres each day in search of clean water, which was particularly challenging for Peter who is living with a disablity. With Caritas Australia’s support, the school has created a new reliable water system. With more free time and fewer illnesses caused by dirty water, Peter can fulfil his hope of focusing on his studies, providing him with brighter future. Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help young people with disabilities gain access to clean water in the

Solomon Islands, providing hope for a brighter future. Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.
