“EVERY CHILD MATTERS”
Dear Families
World Teachers’ Day
World Teachers’ Day was celebrated last Friday. World Teachers' Day offers a chance to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks for the work they do with our children. On behalf of the St Mary’s community, I would like to thank our teachers for making such a difference in educating and inspiring our students.
Starry Starry Night A great time was had by all at the St Mary’s Starry Starry Night event last Saturday (see photo above). The weather was kind to us and the entertainment by students and staff was excellent. I would like to thank our school staff for the great effort they put into the staged dances and of special mention, a huge thank you to our two musical greats, Mrs Benita Klowss and Mr Sam Jessen for the calibre of the fine performances by choirs and musical groups.
A night like this takes a lot of planning and preparation and I would like to congratulate and thank Kath Nolan and her band of P & F parents for their outstanding effort. Thanks to the myriad of helpers in setting and packing up. Thanks also go to the parents who cooked the wonderful food on the night. All in all, a wonderful school event.

Starry Starry Night Congratulations to all the students who performed in Starry Starry Night. It is always humbling to see the amazing talent we have at our school. Thank you to all students and parents who helped in setting up and packing up over the weekend.
Middle School Interviews All families attending Middle School next year should have received their interview times in the mail this week. These interviews will be conducted in Week 6 in the School Administration Building. If for any reason you are unable to make your assigned time, please contact our School Office and we will assist in a finding a more convenient time. This is not an interview to gain acceptance, merely an interview to meet you, answer any questions you may have and discuss your child and their schooling transition.

Thank you for your support of Book Fair! Thank you very much to everyone for supporting our Book Fair. We understand there are a
lot of things happening at the moment and we appreciate our school community making
time to come along and also outlay some hard-earned dollars.
Below are some of the items we purchased with funds raised thanks to all of you!

Over the next few weeks we begin to turn our attention to the annual Library
stocktake. Next Friday the 9th of November, we ask for all student books to be
returned. There will be one more borrow for the year after this; however, the items
available will be limited so we can get started on the count!
We always appreciate the return of items on time as it makes things much easier. In
turn we like to ensure we can provide resources to everyone for as long as
possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail the library staff at:
Have a great week! Emma Petrie [email protected]

Dalby last week (7 are still eligible next year, and need to be congratulated on their achievement).
Congratulations to Olley Spicer and Sean Mudimu who will now compete in Hervey Bay in March
in the State Aquathlon Championships.

“Flow”
(being in the zone OR a heightened state of consciousness)
Flow is being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies.
Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz.
~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Have you ever been so engrossed in what you are doing, time loses its typical dimension?
“Flow” is achieved when a person uses all their consciousness to become fully engaged with an
activity and time becomes meaningless. The focus and concentration become so intense that you
may even lose an awareness of yourself.
To achieve “Flow” both the challenge and the skills needed must be at high levels, stretching us
almost to the limit. When we encounter a challenge that is testing
for our skills and is just about possible, we experience “Flow”.
The graph has the challenge continuum on the vertical axis and the
skill continuum on the horizontal axis.
• When challenge and skill levels are high, we are in a state of
“Flow”.
• When challenge and skill levels are low, we are in a state of
apathy.
We perform/learn most optimally when we are in a state of “Flow”.

TECH CLUB
What is a Micro:Bit? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuza5WXiMkc The Micro:Bit is a pocket-sized computer 70 times smaller and 18 times faster than the original BBC Micro computers used in schools. It has 25 red LED lights that can flash messages and be used to create games. There are two programmable buttons that can be used to control games or pause and skip songs on a playlist. It has an accelerometer so it can detect motion and built-in compass which can translate which direction you may be travelling. It can also use a low energy Bluetooth connection to interact with other devices and the Internet.
What does the program entail? Students will work in pairs, performing simple, yet creative projects with the guidance of Mrs S. Students will meet with Mrs S at the Tech Room attached to the Library each Tuesday.
There will be opportunities for the Micro:Bit Tech Team to consolidate knowledge in their own time throughout the week. This will be negotiated during our first session, 6th November.
How to enrol? Six placements available. Email Mrs S this week to secure enrolment.

To the large number of parent helpers who volunteered their time on the day to set up, on the night to help man the stalls as well as the parents who stayed behind to help pack up, I would like to sincerely thank you for making this event so easy to run. It is true when they say “many hands make light work”. I was overwhelmed by the number of helpers we had this year and a real display of community. In the next few weeks the P & F committee will be able to announce how much we raised towards much needed soundproofing of the Centenary Centre. Thank you Kath Nolan P & F President
