ur PurposeThe academic success of our LISD students rests
primarily on the shoulders of our teachers. However, with budgetary restraints, our teachers have limited resources to introduce new projects, technologies, and other innovative teaching methods into our classrooms.
The mission of the LISD Education Foundation is to fill this funding gap by raising money from our community, and directly using these funds to allocate grants to teachers. Ultimately, the monies raised will allow teachers to enrich and broaden the learning experience of our students on campuses all across our district.
It gives me great pride, as a parent of LISD students and as an alumna of LISD, to partner with you in establishing the Education Foundation. I am supported by a cross section of community members on our board. As members of the Panther Nation, our enduring love for our teachers, students, staff and our community is the catalyst for the creation of the Education Foundation. Our hope is to supply our teachers with tools, curriculum and technologies needed to achieve the academic success we all envision for our students. After all, their success is our community's success.
We invite you to be a part of our mission by donating to the Foundation - no matter the size or form of the gift you choose to give. We sincerely desire that the Lufkin Independent School District's students will continue to grow in knowledge, character and excellence. Your gift will help ensure this goal.
Sincerely,Becca Chance, President LUFKIn

Enrich, Engage and Empower. Enrich our students, Engage our community and Empower our teachers. These are three elements in the formula for successful education that the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation has worked hard to support during our first year. Our board hit the ground
running by undergoing our first annual fundraising campaign and by sponsoring our first academic awards banquet, Panthers of Prestige. During this banquet, our top twenty LISD graduates and the teachers, whom they chose to recognize as influencing them the most, were highlighted. In August we kicked off the academic year by participating in the LISD Convocation and introducing our first teacher participation drive. We were completely overwhelmed by the positive reception we received from the teachers who generously gave more than $31,000 of their own pay as a demonstration of support for the Education Foundation. This drive was confirmation of our mission to raise the bar on education and promote innovative teaching. In December we were thrilled to be able to award 6 innovative teaching grants to 11 teachers on 5 different campuses totaling almost $14,000! Consider how you might be a part of this winning formula to Enrich, Engage and Empower our students, teachers and our community. We invite you to give generously to the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation through: our annual campaign, a matching gift, or gifts in honor or in memory of a favorite teacher, friend or family member. Our sincere desire is to invest in our students within Lufkin Independent School District and to witness growth in knowledge, character and excellence. Be a part of the formula for success! Please visit our website www.lufkineducationfoundation.org for more information.

G rant Celebration Day With the LHS drum line leading the procession performing rhythmic beats, followed by the LHS Var-sity cheerleaders shaking their pom-poms and chanting cheers, the Lufkin ISD Foundation Board members, LISD administrators, and community donors arrived at five different school campuses to surprise grant win-ners with oversized checks totally almost $14,000 to fund innovative teaching projects. Foundation board members carried balloons, noise makers and signs to add to the overall celebratory atmosphere and mark the importance of the occasion. Screams of happiness were heard from the students and tears of joy were seen on the faces of teachers as each grant check was presented. “It was such a magical day to see the complete surprise and excitement of all the grant recipients and their students,” said Foundation Board President, Becca Chance said. “We were overjoyed to award funds for these worthy educational projects because we know each grant will further our mission of pro-viding the resources teachers need to enhance the academic experience of our students.”
Last fall fifteen instructional grant proposals were submitted to the Foundation Programs Committee. The committee, made up of current and retired ad-ministrators and teachers, as well as Foundation board members, reviewed the grants using a predetermined rubric scale. Of the 15 submissions, six well designed and well written grants were selected. Vice President of Programs for the LISD Education Foundation, Lynne Haney, said they were impressed with the quality of grants and she encouraged other teachers to apply for grants in the fall of 2015. “We would like to see more teachers get involved in writing grants,” she said, “because we know teachers are capable of generat-ing so many creative and engaging instructional ideas which will add depth to standard curriculum.” The Foundation Board calls on all teachers to awak-en their creative spirit and apply for the next round of innovative grants to be awarded. Applying for these grants empower teachers to dream big and then bring their dreams to life. The Prize Patrol is eager to make an appearance at another LISD campus soon!

$1,000.00 • Coston Elementary This grant was awarded to bring awareness to students of the importance of our environment. The instructional unit will examine how our environment impacts our everyday lives, and how taking care of it and preserving it can be a benefit to one’s self and the overall health of the community. Through teamwork and a desire to learn, this innovative initiative will involve the outdoors, the community and research. It will create community based projects that will enhance the environment while increasing the student’s sense of self-worth.

Just imagine the benefits students will reap! Not only math, science, reading, writing – but public speaking, community service, engineering, problem solving, and a lifetime of enjoying Texas nature at its best!

$2,352.90 • Kurth Primary Authors of this grant wanted kindergarten students to have a strong background in STEM in order to prepare them for science subjects in the future and also prepared them to take on new challenges. The addition of a light board and numerous scientific and engineering supplies to kindergarten classrooms will jump start students in building vocabulary and skills that will be priceless to students’ future success, said one author of the grant.
Climbing For SuccessCameron Seale, Krista Guzman
and Dorinda Wade$3,850.38 • Dunbar Primary
Ready, Set, CLIMB! The writers of this grant believe climbing activities such as wall climbing, students will learn to work cooperatively, gain trust in self and others and increase their self confidence. Climbing activities such as wall climbing provide opportunities for leadership development that can’t be replicated in the traditional setting.
Alternatives for Our FutureTeresa Roe
$954.54 • Brandon Elementary According to Teresa Roe, author of this grant, “The need for sustainable energy resources is growing world-wide.” She continues to explain that fossil fuel supplies are decreasing while their costs, both monetarily and politically, are increasing. This grant will allow students to become engineers and scientists that will develop ways to use alternative energies in efficient and cost effective ways. Introducing alternatives to fossil fuels in fifth grade is not only state mandated, it is smart. This project will give an exciting look into a future less dependent on fossil fuels.

The Panthers of Prestige Academic Awards Banquet was an evening to honor and recognize the top twenty students from the 2014 Lufkin ISD graduation class, as well as the selected educators who helped these students achieve success in academics and inspired them to continue to better themselves through knowledge. Held in May of 2014 at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center, students’ families and friends, along with LISD staff, teachers and community members gathered for an evening of celebrating these outstanding students and educators. For their academic accomplishments, students were awarded a Panthers of Prestige medal and a commemorative book presented by LISD School Board members. The top twenty students distinguished themselves by their outstanding accomplishments in academics, leadership and service to others at school and in our community. All top twenty students have continued their education at higher learning institutions across the state and nation including Princeton University, Baylor University, University of Colorado, Texas A&M University, University of Texas, University of Texas-Dallas, Southern Nazarene University, Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston, and Texas Tech University. The top twenty students honored their educator of influence whom they felt helped propel them in their quest for excellence in education. At the banquet, students read letters they wrote to their selected educator. One student
spoke about how his educator of influence “would stop at nothing to make sure that he was doing the absolute best job possible to put his students in the optimal position for each of us to succeed”. Another student spoke of how her teacher emphasized the importance of being a lifelong learner. Other students gave examples of the wisdom, patience and guidance their teachers bestowed upon them. As a token of their appreciation, students gave their selected teachers a commemorative book signed by each student. Tables were decorated in purple and gold with the Panthers of Prestige emblem on flower vase center pieces. Brookshire Brothers catered the event along with the assistance of LHS Cafeteria staff and LHS National Honor Society members who served almost 400 attendees. The Lufkin ISD Education Foundation Board hosted the event with board president, Becca Chance acting as the mistress of ceremony. The evening was capped off with a theatrical reading of Dr. Seuss’, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, performed by Pollianne Smith, LISD librarian. The Panthers of Prestige Academic Banquet was made possible by the support of general sponsors, in-kind donations and table sponsors. We would like to thank the following businesses, families and individuals who share our vision of promoting quality education by supporting our teachers who enrich and enhance the education environment for our students and ultimately for our community!

More than 500 LISD teachers and staff members swarmed the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation booth at the annual LISD Convocation in order to sign up for the payroll deduction and show their support for the Foundation’s goal of providing additional resources to enrich the education of LISD students. Held August 2014 at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center, LISD employees donated $31,375. In exchange for contributing $5 per month to what the Foundation coined, “the High 5 Club,” employees were given a specially designed T-shirt which could be worn by employees every Monday with jeans. Also, employees who had signed up for payroll deduction at the Convocation were put in a drawing for Apple iPads donated by Best Buy of Lufkin. Thank you LISD employees for your donations! It inspired many of your fellow peers and impacted many students!
