January 2016 SEE What’s Inside #CloseOutCole Hanibal Buress delivers final homecoming performance in Cole Field House The annual Homecoming Comedy Show has be- come somewhat of a tradition for students at the University of Maryland. SEE is responsible for bringing some of the biggest names in comedy to the stage of Cole Field House like Aziz Ansari and Amy Schumer. This year was no differ- ent, and brought award winning comedian, writer and actor Hannibal Buress. Before a crowd of over 2,000 students, Buress deliv- ered a hysterical performance full of crowd engagement and audio clips. Andrea Holtermann, junior, has attended every comedy show since her freshman year. As a fan of Buress and his acting prior to the show, Holtermann was sure to experience his stand up in person. “He was smart and his use of audio and music clips only made the last show that much better,” Holtermann said. His performance marked the final show in the historic student activities building before renovations take place. To celebrate the momentous occasion, SEE wanted to create a big production as a final goodbye to Cole. Thus was born the #CloseOutCole campaign, the brainchild of Comedy Director Naitik Thanki and the SEE Promotional Team. Students were able to use and search the hashtag on Twitter as a way to share photos, videos and general commentary on the performance. “Hashtags are a way to build interest among students in a quick and easy way,” Thanki explains. “I wanted a huge production effect with confetti and smoke cannons to commemorate the last time Cole was used as a venue. While this was last time that the Homecoming Comedy Show was held at Cole, it is also marks a new chapter for SEE and they surely made it one to remember. #CloseOutCole Hanibal Buress delivers final homecoming performance in Cole Field House

The annual Homecoming Comedy Show has be-come somewhat of a tradition for students at the University of Maryland. This year was no differ-ent, and brought award winning comedian, writer and actor Hannibal Buress. Ready to ShineWhy did you join SEE? So, my story’s a little bit unique. I actually found out about SEE before I even became a student here. It was the summer before freshman year, and the girl who hosted me here retweeted something, so I clicked on it and saw that it was from Student Entertainment Events, and that’s the first time I heard about SEE. I have always want to be an E! News anchor, so anything related to the entertainment industry is a dream. So, I immediately contacted the membership director at the time, and asked how I could get in-volved even though I technically wasn’t even a student. She told me to look out for the SEE table at the first look fair, and I applied as soon as I could. I remember my application was like writing a book, it was super long and I felt bad for whoever had to read it. But it was important that I put forth my best effort.

Did you always want to be president of SEE? I’ve always felt like a natural leader, and I enjoy motivating others to do the best they can and acting as a re-source for them if they ever need anything. I’m big on personal relationships and believe that it’s the foundation to any sort of interaction. Originally I applied for Marketing Director, but after giving it more thought I realized how passionate I was about SEE, and I was ready to take the next step. Yes, I love being a director and would be more than happy to remain one, but I felt ready to commit to something greater.

What is your vision for next semester as presidnet? I plan on putting an emphasis on integrating the teams into our organization, because they are a vital part to the success of our events. Even though as directors, we don’t want them to feel like they are not included, we want them to know that they are just as much as part of SEE as the directors are. Overall I would like to make SEE more approachable in order to humanize SEE. We’ve utilized our social me-dia a lot recently, one of the idea that the marketing team had was along the lines of a background story on people who attend our shows. It would be sort of like Humans of New York, but for SEE!

Why should other students join SEE? It gives you the op-portunity to grow as a person, and learn from other people regardless of their major or history. With so many person-alities, cultures and backgrounds in one organization, there are only chances to grow.

How to Get InvolvedLearn how you can become a part of one of the largest student organizations on campus

Applications for director positions may be closed, but there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in SEE. There are three teams that work alongside directors, and are essential to the success of the organization as a whole in the planning and execution of an event. These teams consist of the security, tech and marketing teams. The marketing team, or M-Team, meets once a week and is responsible for getting the word out on upcom-ing events. They do this by chalking and flyering around campus. Members of the M-Team are also encouraged to offer their input by giving their own feedback, and sharing any ideas they may have. Becoming a part of the M-Team is a great way to see if becoming a SEE director is right for you, or simply as a way to get invovled on campus without the commitment of a director position. If weekly meetings are not in the cards for you, the security and tech team are contracted positions only for events. On top of the low com-mitment, the security and tech team are also paid positions. For special events, the security and tech team assist with loading and unloading of equip-ment, as well as with any technical or security needs. All teams provide the most valuable aspect that all college student needs, but most do not have: real-world experience. Becoming a part of SEE is a perfect tool for any student interested in the entertainment industry, or any industry for that matter. It’s never too late to get involved.

SEE is dedicated all year to planning pro-grams for the student body, but ever once in a while they take a moment to plan one for themselves.

In an effort to make SEE more ap-proachable, membership director, Emily Alworth planned an outing to a pump-in patch to promote unity within the organization.

“We’re more than students in a club, we’re a family,” Alworth said.

Not only does SEE host some of the most well-known names in the entertainment industry, but it is also dedicated to helping other student organizations succeed in their event programming. The SEE Review Board offers co-sponsorship opportunities to student groups registered with the Office of Campus Programs. The goals of the SEE Review Board are to promote diversity within event programming and to provide pro-grammatic and/or financial support for groups needing assistance. It aims to help student organizations become more sustainable. The SEE Review Board serves to provide SGA-recognized student organizations with a means to present diverse programming for the University of Maryland campus community. It can help with funding for venues, pro-duction, performer’s fees, securities, and promotion. The board must adhere to various bylaws that determine whether or not an organization will recieve funding for a specific event. The bylaws are put in place to encourage student groups to plan events on their own that will be self-sustaining in the future. Co-Sponsorship Director, Nike Alade, is responsible for all inquiries from organizations seeking funding, programming and technical support from SEE. Alade acts as a liasion between the SEE Review Board and the the SEE Executive Baord. She organizes, faciliates and runs the SEE Review Board meetings all in hopes of establishing and building relationships with other student orgazniations at the university. “At this point we are so experienced with running successful events, and I think it’s important that we support other organizations in any way that we can” Alade said. The Student Review Board helped fund TedxUMaryland, a day-long lecture series that aimed to inspire students to become the world’s future leaders and critical thinkers. One semester, the board also awarded funding to Terrapin Beats Society for its concert, which featured a lineup including student DJs and headliner Elephante. For more information on the SEE Review Board, email Nike Alade at [email protected]
