Yinnar South Citizens Association The Yinnar South Citizens Association (YSCA) has achieved much for the community over the several decades it’s been active. It has been a key advocacy group as well as a very hands on and active group in managing and enhancing local facilities and amenities. Amongst its many achievements are:

Attraction of major state and local government grants and management of Significant upgrading of the Yinnar South Community Hall.

Attraction of local government grants and support and management of significant Upgrades to Martin Walker Reserve including shelters, picnic tables, bollards, toilet enhancements, driveway/parking upgrades, tree plantings and general beautification works.

Advocacy for road safety enhancements Including lit warning signs ahead of the blind Walsh’s Road/Monash Way intersection.

Advocacy over many years for safe logging operations by HVP plantations in using Yinnar South roads. This advocacy resulted in significant road upgrades (totalling approximately $1.8m), and strict conditions on the use of roads by log truck drivers.

Organisation and co-ordination of the successful Australia Day community breakfast at Martin Walker Reserve, which has become an annual fixture.

Over recent months and years, a few things have changed:

Yinnar South Hall management and operation was transferred to Yinnar South Primary School – this followed public liability insurance issues which required clarity of Ownership and responsibility beyond YSCA.

Logging operations in Yinnar South ceased in early 2017….at least for 20-25 years!

Martin Walker Reserve is considered largely self-sustaining with good ongoing maintenance support from Latrobe City Council. Given this, and the fact that only a small band of five or six core members now carry on the work of the Association….and have for a number of years…we feel it’s time to wind-up YSCA….or at least put it in to recess. In considering this, we are pondering ideas for any final projects and/or distribution of remaining funds to other not-for-profit local community organisations. Some initial idea’s include a further shelter at Martin Walker Reserve; support for the Tennis Courts (new nets?); and support for any fund-raising/projects at the CFA. Any additional or alternative ideas are welcome….and would ultimately be put to a Special Meeting of the Association later in the year, which may also subsequently move to formally wind-up YSCA. Thanks for the support over the years, and look forward to any ideas or feedback. Greg Blakeley – 0419 007 295 or [email protected]

Hi Everyone hope you’ve been keeping warm in this un-usually very cold winter. With little rain the dams are still low but lets hope we have some good spring rains to fill them

up and lets hope our summer is not a bad one because of the low rainfall. We recently we had a fire call to a property with a chimney fire. A safe preventative measure is to give your fire a good hot burn by opening the air dampener fully allowing the fire to burn freely. You can do this every couple of weeks to help reduce the amount of build up in the flue. The build up is caused by low flame and unburnt particles of green timber and sap not flowing up the chimney properly and sticking inside it. There are products you can buy to help clean the flue but a good open hot fire will work just as well. In June the brigade held its bi annual AGM for election of Brigade officers for the next two years and l am happy to announce the officers and they are Mark Bruerton as Captain, 1

st Lieutenant Peter Brimblecombe;

2nd

Lieutenant Kevin Pike; 3rd

Lieutenant Peter Flanigan; 4

thlieutenant Joanne Penny;

Communication Officer Stephan James, and Secretary Sue Bruerton. It is Jo Penny’s first time as a Lieutenant, great to see her on board, she will do a great job. The Merton group just recently help a training session for new recruits and have now finished their basic minimum skills training and are ready for their first fire call. If you intend to do any burning of always register your burn especially during the

warmer months, ring 1800668511. PLEASE always have someone in attendance when burning off. And always have some form of fire fighting equipment near by and by this l mean a hose that reaches the fire or a couple of buckets or a proper fire fighting Knapsack and not the general weed spraying one The brigade meets on Sunday mornings from 9.30 am until approx. 11am. Brigade meetings are held on the second Monday of the even numbered months from 7.30pm. If you wish to join of want more details please ring Mark Bruerton on 0428 223 361 Stay warm and safe Mark Bruerton / Brigade Captain

Yinnar Scout Group have had a busy few months with camps, trivia nights, campfire nights as well as many indoor activates such as Archery and indoor games nights. The Scout Group braved the cold for the Winter Camp in July and set up and maintained their camp for 4 nights

at a property in Yinnar South. The Scouts set up their tents, cooked their own food and kept

the campfire going with the big task of collect-ing their own firewood.. The scouts quickly had to get used to all the mud. The Scouts enjoyed themselves and learned lots of out-door camping skills whilst being out in nature.

The Cubs have been busy this year, they enjoyed a fun morning out at Parky’s wonderland at the Traralgon caravan park, and did activities such as the high ropes course, laser tag and mini golf. The Yinnar scout group also held a trivia night at

the Yinnar pub in July, the group were over-whelmed by the help from local businesses who have supported the group as it goes to-wards a great cause of keeping the group go-ing. The night was enjoyed by all and the spe-cial guest stars from the Strzelecki String-busters made the night extra special. So thank

you.. The Groups annual Reports and Presentation night will be held at the Yinnar Hall on August 25

th at 7pm. The Cubs will

attending Cuboree in October which will be held near Gembrook with over 3500 cubs in attend ance

Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare News August 2017 It’s been a busy winter planting season for Yinnar, Yinnar South Landcare group. As well as planting on our own properties, we’ve held National Tree Day activities at Hazelwood Cemetery on July 15 and at the Yinnar South School car park on July 27.

Energy Australia sponsored the day at the Cemetery while Latrobe City assisted with in-kind support. The planting day at the school was fully support-ed by Latrobe City who supplied us with tube stock, tree

guards, tools and stakes They also did the site preparation in advance of our planting day. We broke all our previous record by getting 800 plants in the ground. One of our members also held a very success-ful planting day on their property at Delburn on August 11 with students from Mirboo North High School. We hope to soon be able to announce the formation a new Landcare group in the

Delburn and Wilderness Creek area. Talks are under way with the Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network about this exciting initiative. Another group known as Intrepid Landcare has been formed for people aged between 18 and 35. They’ve already had a leadership weekend at Wilson’s Prom. and a planting day at Woolamai. We’re hoping that we’ll be able to put on an event in our district to involve them at some time in the not too distant future. They are active on Facebook where we are also developing a group site.

We went back to the Hazelwood Cemetery for a ferreting and warren smoking demonstration on August 5. Among other things, this day demonstrated what excellent harbour rabbits can find under piles of logs and rubbish. The ferrets chased the rabbits, but the rabbits did-n’t come out. Returning with longer nets might be an option; but getting rid of the rabbit har-bour will be a more lasting solution. We caught a healthy rabbit in a different warren system, which indicates that our release of calici virus at the cemetery wasn’t as successful as we’d hoped. On August 7 we held our Annual General Meeting and listened to a most interesting talk about bees by Stan Glowacki from Jeeralang Apiaries. This meeting was well attended and our group’s membership continues to grow. Our office bearers are unchanged. Lucy Simnett is President; Jay Duncan Secretary, and Bev Read our Treasurer. We have a propagation offer on the table. One of our new members only needs a greenhouse and a few materials and will propagate locally sourced seeds to order for planting sites in the district. If you can help with greenhouse space, or would like some tube-stock raised, please get in touch.

Landcare Cont…. We haven’t heard anything yet about any of the submissions for Billy’s Creek valley revegetation; so we’ve postponed the High Tea that we were planning to hold on Sept. 2. To support the community’s land manage-ment and biodiversity initiatives our group has the following equipment available for loan: Spray Trailer with long hoses suitable for spraying in otherwise inaccessible sites. Marney Kanavan on 0408 221 716 or [email protected] Hamilton Planters – good for planting tubes, but not the best on clay soil Forestry Spades – shared with Yinnar South Primary School Rabbit Warren Smoker – to detect entrances for fumigation, implosion or manual Destruction. Jay 51631393 Cat traps. Cats are Australia’s worst predator of native wildlife. We can’t successfully improve habitat with them roaming the landscape. Myna Traps. Indian mynas attack native birds and aggressively compete with them for r sources, especially nesting sites. Their numbers can be reduced by trapping. Wildlife Cameras and plant identification reference library (group members only) Coming Events: Sept 16: (Saturday) Churchill Market stall from 8.30 a.m. Oct 21 (Saturday) Churchill Market stall from 8.30 a.m. followed by group meeting at Churchill pub at 1.00 p.m. November 11 (Saturday) Maple Massacre 10a.m start Budgeree Bush Reserve (At the corner of The Mill Road and Whitelaws Track, Yinnar South) ALSO: Friends of the Morwell National Park have a track monitoring activity on the Grand Strzelecki Track on Sunday September 17. They meet at the Junction Road car park at 10.00am. http://www.morwellnp.pangaean.net/browser/Friends/Newsletters/2017_Calendar.pdf

Hidden Treasure to be Found in Traralgon

Soroptimist International of Gippsland will be discovering hidden treasure in Traralgon on September 9. The club will be holding an antiques and collectables evening at the Traralgon Bridge Club to raise money for the work that it does to promote health and education for women and children, both locally and globally. Funds raised from this event will be used specifically to provide education scholarships for Gippsland girls and women. Soroptimist International Spokesperson, Helen McAdam, said that a similar event held two years ago was very enjoyable and has made a comeback due to popular demand. “We are very fortunate to have the wonderful Bruce Arnup once again volunteer his time to value antiques and collectables. He is very knowledgeable and entertaining and it is a night full of fun and surprises as we discover the value of our hidden treasures.” Helen said that most people remember Bruce’s sessions on Gippsland ABC radio and take the opportunity to have a fun evening, whilst learning more about the collectables that have been in their houses for many years. Bruce has recently retired from his Red Soldier Antique shop in Sale, but still has a vital interest in all things collectable. Bruce was very impressed by the range of collectables that club members and friends brought to the last evening and hopes that more people in the Latrobe Valley have more interesting treasures to be valued. Doors will open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start at the Traralgon Bridge Club , Howitt Street, Traralgon. As usual the Soroptimist cooks will do their thing and provide a traditional country supper, and a glass of bubbly to start the night. Tickets are $20, which include the valuation of one item. Additional items can be valued for $5 each. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=303372 or by contacting Helen McAdam on 0438 164 528.

Yinnar South Primary Banksia (senior) students attended Federation Univer-sity for a discovery Day. Stu-dents experienced University life for a day. They ended the day in caps, gowns and smiles all-round.

Once a week our students participate in Coding. Here students work individually and

collaboratively to complete problem solving with digital technologies. Students have had the opportunity to further enhance their coding skills through the use of Robotics. Students worked together to create music and program cars to race around tracks.

One group of students even built a func-tional comput-er that they could then play Minecraft on.

Our grade 5/6 students combined with Yinnar Primary School to attend Sovereign Hill camp which embeds the current curriculum history focus.

The Banksia students had their annual Melbourne ex-cursion. This year their day started with a 7:30am train

ride to Mel-bourne followed by a brisk walk to the Immigra-tion Museum.

They then caught a tram to the Shrine. The day was concluded with a tour of China-town and the students shared a Chi-nese meal before catch-ing the train home.
