Allison Fine, the SEE Monfort Creativity Speaker, is a successful
social entrepreneur and writer dedicated to helping grassroots organi-zations and activists successfully implement social change efforts. As asenior fellow on the Democracy Team at Demos: A Network for Changeand Action in New York City, Allison researches and writes about thefuture of social change and civic engagement in this new digital age.
Her book, Momentum: Igniting Social Change in the Connected Age,is the winner of the Terry McAdams National Book Award. How can wemove from serving soup until our elbows ache to solving chronic socialills like hunger or homelessness? How can we break the disastrous cycleof low expectations that leads to chronic social failures? The answers tothese questions lie within Fine’s MOMENTUM: Igniting Social Changein the Connected Age, a fresh, zestful way of thinking about and organ-izing social change work. Today’s digital tools—including but not limitedto e-mail, the Web, cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), eveniPods—promote interactivity and connectedness. But as MOMENTUMshows, these new social media tools are important not for their wizardrybut because they connect us to one another in inexpensive, accessible, and massively scalable ways. www.allisonfine.com
