Seeing my surprise, he quickly smiled and explained, “Teacher, you taught me English. I am Rama Nathan from 3A2 at SMK Setia Jaya.”

“Oh, it’s nice to meet you again. Your face looks familiar but I can’t quite place you, “I heard myself saying as I racked my brains to recall who this friendly man was.

“Teacher, can you remember Azlan and Meng Tai? We were the famous trio in school,” he said. “We were the naughtiest boys in class. Everyone gave up on us …. except you, teacher. You believed in us and encouraged us to take part in a play,” he continued.

“Oh, yes! I remember now! You three took part in the ‘Secret of the Japanese Swordfish’. Everyone loved it!” I exclaimed excitedly as bits and pieces of the play flashed across my mind.

“Teacher, our lives changed after the play. We decided to turn over a new leaf and be more responsible. Now, we are all married and working hard to look after our families. Thank you, teacher, for believing in us,” he said. “Today’s roti canai is free for you, teacher,” he added. With a wide smile on his face which showed off his perfect pearly-white teeth.

I thanked him happily and walked away with a song in my heart and a packet of roti canai in my hand.

Questions 25 – 30 are based on the following conversation

Kamal : Hi, everyone! How were your holidays?Ranjit : I had a great time! My family went a trip to Taman Negara for four days

and three nights. All of us are nature lovers, so we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Kim Lai : For me, the highlight of the holiday was celebrating my grandfather’s eighty-eight birthday. All my uncles, aunts and cousins came to Kuala Lumpur for the grand occasion. We celebrated it at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant where the food was simply out of this world! I wouldn’t mind going back there again one day. And how was your holiday, Kamal?

Kamal : You wouldn’t want to know! My neighbourhood was badly flooded. It was the worst flood in nine years! It really took everyone by surprise because there was no rain when the flood came. The downpour the previous night had stopped more than seven hours ago.

Kim Lai : What? A flood without rain? How can that be?Ranjit : Yes, that’s really strange!Kamal : Well, actually, there’s an explanation for all this. My parents believe that

the downpour the previous night had caused the Klang River to overflow. It’s just unfortunate that it overflowed in Shah Alam. The flood water must have been trapped within our housing estate because of the poor drainage system there.

Ranjit : How high did the water rise?Kamal : Nearly a metre! Can you imagine the water up to my waist? It was scary,

especially since we didn’t know if the water would continue rising or how long it’d take to subside.

Kim Lai : It must have affected everyone badly.Kamal : It sure did.

Hang gliding is becoming more and more popular nowadays as an outdoor activity for those who enjoy “gliding in the wind like the birds of the air”. Here is some information about hang gliding.

The glider looks like a huge triangular kite and it comes in many colours. The glider is piloted by a person who is attached to it with the help of a harness. The pilot must use goggles to protect his eyes and a helmet to protect his head The glider uses wing power to move with the air currents. It can travel as fast as 40 kilometres per hour or more. The pilot uses a control bar to change the direction of the glider. Hang gliders can take off from hill slopes, cliffs and even tall skyscrapers. A sudden change in wind direction or a sudden drop in wind power may result in

the hang glider plunging down. It may be risky to hang glide along rocky mountainsides or above the sea. The bright colours of the hang glider will help it to be spotted easily if it has
