What we’ve learnt in Business so far:

Amongst many things in year 10 we learnt about Private Sector and

Public Sector businesses. We created our very own town and decided

which buildings are going to be owned by entrepreneurs or by the

government. This gave us the opportunity to debate whether to have

a socialist or a capitalist society.

In year 11, we have been focusing on finance and accounting. These

topics are useful for all the students because they include mathemat-

ics and how to implement the knowledge of our subject into aspects

of an everyday business. We got a perspective into accounting, in-

cluding different tools and techniques to construct break-even graphs,

cash flows and calculate various types of profits.

It has been a very busy start for Key Stage 4 as students in Year 10 began their new Options subjects

and Year 11 students are preparing for their rehearsal examina-

tions.

For many Year 10 students, this will be the first time they have

studied subjects such as Economics, Business Studies, Computer

Science and Travel and Tourism. They are learning how to man-

age their time and commitments to en-

sure they start as they mean to go on.

Our Year 11 students have started to

prepare revision timetables during our PSHCE lessons to make sure they

are using their time effectively and ensuring they have all the materials they

need to succeed in November and in the final examination period in the

summer.

There are some exciting new leadership opportunities on the horizon that

we want our students to put themselves forward for such as representing their year group in the Stu-

dent Council and being selected to be a Prefect, which is a great opportunity to develop themselves as

role models for younger students.

Achievement Points are just as important as they were at Key Stage 3. Well done to the leading tutor

groups 10SKH and 11AJU who are marginally ahead.

Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 learners had a great time at the Artist In Residence Exhibition at Doha’s Firestation Gallery. The Fire Station Artist in Residence programme provides the perfect springboard for creativity, helping people take their passion to the next level, as it involves a nine-month programmes for artists who are resident in Qatar. During this time, they move into one of the studios, collaborate with fellow creatives and develop their own technique.

On Thursday 27th September, the Art & Design GCSE and A-level students visited the Fire Station Gallery in Doha, as a part of their course. The gallery presented an extravagant exhibition called Artists in Residence (dual inspiration). The gallery exhibited an exciting and unique array of pieces that ranged from mediums of acrylic paints to wood carving.

Some pieces required interaction with the audience that created an interesting piece at the end. The artwork presented in the gallery explored ideas of different scenarios (like nature and politics in Qatar) that put forward unique interpretations of different contexts and cultures.

The visit to the gallery gave students an opportunity to find different styles and further their knowledge. Exploring key concepts and ideas by discussions and/or debates. The art work presented was a first-look on a useful tool that will help the students throughout their art course.

On Thursday 20thSeptember the Qatar National Library

(www.qnl.qa) hosted a free concert of film music associated with the sea by The Cinemoon Ensemble and the Doha Choir. Over 1,000 people attended, including the Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music Students from DES. We were treated to excerpts from Moana, Finding Nemo, Papillon, 1492 – The Search for Paradise and many more. As always, the perfor-mances were of a very high standard, and we thoroughly recommend attending one of these free concerts, either at the library or the Museum of Islamic Art (www.mia.org.qa). Just ask one of the students…

What a great start! The last few weeks have been an exciting transition for our Year 7 students. Over the last

month, they have been working hard in lessons, consolidating what they learned in Year

6 as well as studying new subjects such as Drama, STEM and 21st Century X. They are

getting used to lots of different teachers, classrooms and having A LOT more homework!

Year 8 students have returned with optimism and confidence and are already making

great strides with the curriculum in all of their subjects. No longer the youngest students

in Key Stage 3, they are becoming great role models for the younger students with their positive atti-

tudes and friendly smiles.

Our Year 9 students have also returned with great attitudes and a sense of self-

assuredness as they begin to embrace the challenges this year will bring.

They are discovering plenty of opportunities to take on leadership positions

as well as joining exciting new endeavours such as the Oryx Award.

We are incredibly proud of the contributions made already by a number of students in Key Stage 3. Thank you to Noor Yaqoob (7SMA), Aisha Malek (7SMA), Aayesha Chowdhury (7GCO), Shreya Pillai (7MTA), Haya Al-Qahtani (8SAH), Roudha Al-Qahtani (9SAZ) and Soumya Zagade (8TBE) for their stunning signs and artwork, which have brightened up our lovely new library.

Date for the diary:

Main Hall, Dukhan English School

The NEW Secondary Library is now well and truly open and being enthusiasti-cally used by students and staff throughout the school day. The Library now consists of a main reception area with “chill out” zone where the students can talk quietly and play a variety of games. There is also a quiet study room, a quiet reading room and a con-ference room which can be booked by Teachers or Sixth Form students for small group work. The computer suite is still in progress but will include a bank of computers connected to a printer. The Library also includes a Praise Wall where students’ good work and attitude will be celebrated, a large mirror for positive reflection and a recently added fish tank with 4 new members of the Library!

In 2009, 2012 and 2015 Singapore had the top ranked students in Mathematics according to PISA, a world rankings system which compares the developed abilities of 15 year olds from around the world.

As Mathematics teaching across Primary and Secondary in Dukhan English School embraces Singapo-rean Mathematics approaches, I would like to present you some problems these children in Year 5 (Aged 10 – 11) encounter and ask::

Are you smarter than a Singaporean 10-year-old?

No calculators allowed.

Mrs. Gray bought some eggs. She boiled half of them and poached a quarter of the remainder. She had 9 eggs left. How many eggs did she buy?

To round off the aca-
