Dear Reader,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our latest edition of DukES. We are coming to the end of a

busy and exciting examination period, and our students have conducted themselves impeccably

with their attitude towards school work. The end of the examination season closes the chapter

on a challenging year, where our children have shown admirable determination to get the best

academic results. I am extremely proud of them all I wish them the very best of luck in the fu-

ture!

What has been equally impressive was the school’s contribution to the wider community of

Dukhan, with our pupils exhibiting their wonderful talent for the expressive arts. Teachers, par-

ents and pupils alike were thoroughly entertained by the Primary School concerts, as well as the

thrilling GCSE Drama performances of ‘Ivan and the Dogs’, and ‘Crossroads’. Summer Serenade

demonstrated the musical prowess of our children, and the Art exhibition treated people from

all across the community to some stunning work. The school hosted the Spring Fair which, as

usual, drew a huge attendance from the residents of Dukhan.

What I have found very impressive has been our pupils’ commitment and enthusiasm for our DESMUN conference, where they engage

in the processes of international politics and diplomacy. As part of these conferences, our pupils develop themselves as global citizens

who are going to shape the future of our world. Our students’ professional conduct during these conferences is a real credit to the

school and the wider community.

Finally, it was such a pleasure to meet the parents of our Primary School students as part of my presentation on the 11th of June. I really

enjoyed discussing the school and my hopes for the future with you. It is a pleasure to work in such a supportive community and I am

looking forward to building on this year’s successes in September.

Wishing you a happy summer break,

Charlotte Molloy

Summer Serenade 2015 began with a

bang with ‘Carmina Burana’ played by the

DES Orchestra. We heard wonderful vo-

cals from the choirs: Destiny, Descant,

Key Stage 3 and Senior Chorale. True tal-

ent was showcased with talented solos

performed by Frank Allen, Krishna

Shridhar, Carel Choueiri and Jibreel Sarail.

The evening also showcased budding

young musicians including the Recorder

Ensemble and Saxophonics. Other acts

included Get Curious, a developing band

from Year 7, and a charming performance

from a sixth form barbershop trio. The

Soul Band injected sparkle to the evening

with their set before the finale drew the

evening to a moving conclusion with Karl

Jenkin’s ‘Adiemus’.

In Nursery this term we have started our new

topic of ‘Stories’. We have been reading Eric

Carle’s ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ and enjoyed trying

out healthy foods like the caterpillar, painting

pictures and reading books. We even made

our own smoothies. ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’

was another popular story and we all have

enjoyed planting our own beans and watching

them grow. We have been acting out the story

in the role play area using our big voices.

Year 2 Pizza Express trip

We were so excited when we found out that we

were going to go to Pizza Express! We sang songs

all the way on the bus. When we arrived, we

went straight into the shop. The chef showed us

the how they make the dough and then how to

make the pizza base. We spread the sauce and

placed the cheese on the pizza. The oven was

super hot so we had to stand back. When it was

cooked, we had a yummy time eating our own

Preparing for DESMUN was the highlight of my senior

year, not only was the conference rewarding but also I

was able to work with three amazing people – Harsha

Thomas, Ayman Arif and Abeer Baig. This year, the

one day conference concluded at the DRC for the clos-

It was yet another successful term for red house last half-term. Hafsa Jabeen caught the eye as our Key Stage 3 girls won the netball tournament, with Shaad Abdul Vahah leading the boys to a worthy second place in the football. Oscar Canton ran ex-tremely well to put red house into third place in the Cross-Country and Najla Assegaff led the Key Stage 3 team to a mem-orable victory in the rounders tournament. Although the Key Stage 3 side didn’t have the best of cricket championships (finishing fourth) the Key Stage 4 and 5 side fared much better, with Ahmed Yaqoob instrumental in a highly impressive second place. Another inspirational half-term for Red House!

many events for the primary houses

and this year was no exception. Miss

Gunn shows magnificent organisation-

al skills, arranging more than ten

different activities for us to enjoy. This meant that

there were activities that suited each individual and

some for teams or even the whole house. Red House

have really enjoyed these competitions. We started

well, winning the Water Festival and the Problem

Solving and came second in the Cross Country, Table

Football and Creative day. We have all enjoyed some

This year the children from Year 2 decided to head deep underwater as they per-

formed a ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ to a packed out audience. Every imaginable sea

creature was on stage, each dressed in the most wonderful and colourful costumes.

There were jiggling jellyfish, scary sharks, perfect penguins and a whole lot more. The

children did a fantastic job learning all of their lines and performing the songs with

energy and enthusiasm. Who would have thought that all those underwater creatures

were so good at playing the air guitar!

A huge thank you to all the staff who helped put on this show, with special mentions

to Dr. Justice for his musical accompaniment and all the wonderful Teaching Assistants

who helped design and make the spectacular backdrops and the fabulous costumes.

But the biggest ‘Well Done’ goes to all the children in Year 2 who made this a show to

The Umm Bab Wolves have had a great year working

hard as always. This resulted in winning nearly all the

competitions so far, only missing winning the shield by

a couple of points. But a pack is only as great as its

leader and I think that all of Green House would agree

with me when I say that Mr Ali has done a tremen-

dous job in getting everyone involved in the different

house events and motivating the Greens to get more

house points. A big thank you from all the Greens to

Mr Ali for all the hard work he has done over the last

L!BRARY The Big Blue Box Mystery

This term the Library introduced the secondary students to the new Big Blue Box.

Suggestions for the use of the Big Blue Box included a charity box, an opinion box, a

cupboard and a new Amwaj café. All was revealed to the students at the start of term

… the Big Blue Box is actually a BOOK RETURN BOX. That’s right! The students now

don’t even have to remember to come to the Library to return their Library book.

They just have to remember that they have a book to return! The book gets placed in

the Book Return Box and is then collected and returned to the Library. Now there are

no more excuses for late Library books!

The Summer term is the time for the Summer

Serenade. The Library celebrated this fantastic

annual event by displaying a number of music

related books, to introduce and remind the stu-

dents of the resources available in the Library.

Introducing “Oliver”

Oliver is the new Library software

which was introduced into the Library

during this academic year. The new

software has many new features

which will enhance the use of the Li-

brary. In the near future the Library

shall introduce Oliver’s capabilities to

all users, which will include how to:

access Oliver from within school and

from home, search the database of

Library resources, find book recom-

mendations, read the synopsis of a

book, reserve a book and write a book.

The Library is supposed to be a quiet place, however, the DES

Library can get very busy before school and at break times. To

remind the Primary students to remain quiet in the Library, the

Library issues each student with a “Quiet Card” when they enter

the Library.

This academic year the Library intro-

duced the Library Card to all KS1 stu-

dents. This is the first time that the

students have had a Library Card issued

to them. The Library Card includes the

student’s name, class and photograph,

and the students need to bring the Li-

brary Card to the Library any time they

wish to take out a book. The students

were shown how to use the card

properly and by the end of the Summer

term they were accomplished Library

On Saturday 2nd May, the Art staff and parents ac-

companied Liza Auliya and Alyssa Ocampo to Mathaf

Arab Museum of Modern Art, where the girls had

some of their work exhibited in the 3rd

Student Art

Competition. This year’s subject matter was

‘Portraiture’.

Works by Faiz Sahara and Ghina Atthahirah were also

chosen amongst students from all over Qatar to have

their work hung in the exhibition.

Well done, everyone.

Arabic and Islamic Studies Year 5 Trip to Cafe Ceramique

Last Thursday, our Arabic department organised a trip for Year 5 students to

Cafe Ceramique in Doha. We left school at 7.30am and we were on the bus

with our friends. We talked, laughed and sang all the way through to Doha.

When we arrived there, the staff at the cafe gave each a plain mug, different

painting colours, a brush and a sponge. They then explained to us how to

paint our mugs and that we have to apply three coats to make sure the col-

ours are bright when they take them out of the oven.

When we had finished designing our mugs, we were given a burger meal

each which we enjoyed eating. At 12.30pm, we left the Cafe and we were

told that we could collect our mugs in two weeks’ time. We boarded the bus

back to school after an exciting morning which we will always remember.

We had a great time and lots of fun and look forward to going on school

trips again!

Fossil Hunting Fun

by Yazan Al Zaied 7SAP

This term’s Geology Club trip was great

fun. On Tuesday, March 10th we travelled to two

very special secret places in the desert, not far

from Dukhan. The Geology Club members did

the same trip last term with Mr. Baker and Miss

Williams, but this time many more people came:

thirty-two altogether, including staff. They have

all promised to keep the secret!

We went to hunt for fossils, mainly sharks’ teeth,

but also fossilized shells and anything fossil-

related. In the first spot, Suliman found a small

shark’s tooth and I found some fossilized shells.

Then Suliman found a really big tooth - every-

one wanted it.

Mr. Baker showed us some of his own collection

of sharks’ teeth so we knew what to look for.

When we did the trip last term, Rajwa was the

first one to find a small shiny tooth, then Mr.

Baker spotted one, then we all started finding

them. Thank you Mr. Baker from all of us!

If you are interested in rocks and fossils, you can

join the Geology Club every Tuesday at 1.50pm,

in S6. We will hopefully do the trip again very

soon, open to non-members, but you have to

promise to keep the secret! A humdinger of an excursion to the singing

dunes with our A-level Physics students con-

cluded our spring term.

The summer term has been engulfed mostly

by exam preparation. Revision and exam

techniques have been conducted through nu-

merous practical activities, but students and

staff have all been burning the midnight oil to

ensure that students are well prepared for

their examinations.

The chemists are making arrangements to

facilitate a visit for some KS4 Chemistry stu-

dents to QP’s Geology Laboratory, where ge-

ological sample materials are stored and ana-

lysed. This promotes a better understanding

of the reservoir, so that oil and gas can be

recovered more efficiently and economically.
