Years ago Mark Twain stated, “Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to.” and I’ve often wondered what level of emotions are experienced by
animals. For example, years ago when our rather large dog would accidentally walk into something and our children would laugh, it appeared that our dog was embarrassed. Was it embarrassed or was it just our imagination at work?
Recently I came across the work of Jaak Panksepp, an Estonian psychobiologist, and it has made me wonder ‘Can we learn something from rats?’ Panksepp studied laughter in animals and conducted many experiments on rats. As a child his family had spent four years in moving from one displaced persons’ camp to another and I suppose that he found an interest in what causes happiness. He found that domesticated rats when tickled ‘laugh’ or emit ultra-sonic vocalisations outside of the human range of hearing, which can only be detected with high-tech equipment.
This research has encouraged others to further the study in related areas such as Temple Grandin’s work on autistic animals and their welfare, and how we can improve their care and handling. Other research has shown that positive thinking and empathy were also evident in the behaviour of the rats. Now while much of this research is based on an evolutionary understanding of animal / human development this does not prevent us from gaining a life lesson from the lower creations found in the animal kingdom.
In a society that is awash with depression and anxiety, it should not be beyond us to find cause for laughter among the animals. In fact, some cynics have suggested that the internet developed simply so that we watch cats be silly. However, the idea of learning from nature is not new - thousands of years ago one of the wisest men who ever lived recommended that we study ants if we lacked enthusiasm (Proverbs 6:6-8).
In the same way, if simple rats can give evidence that laughter and empathy are a part of their makeup, then what about us? How much more should we who were ‘made in His image’ (Gen 1:27) and ‘a little lower than the angels’ (Heb. 2:7; Ps 8:5) be able to show care and compassion with a laugh along the way?
It’s worth a thought. Mark B Vodéll Principal

GILSON COLLEGE KINDERGARTEN TURNING OF THE SOD
Tuesday 6th August marks a memorable occasion with the official start for our long-awaited construction of a Kindergarten.
The College, with The Hon Natalie Hutchins and other invited guests, marked the occasion with a Sod Turning Ceremony on the site. Mark Vodell, College Principal quoted Confucius when he stated: “If your plan is for one year plant rice. If your plan is for ten years plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years educate children.” He also thanked the State government for their grant of $650,000 indicating that the contribution to the facility is appreciated and that the investment involved vision and planning for the future. The Hon Natalie Hutchins responded by underlining the importance of a good education and
valuing the benefits that are obtained by an early start that provides a rich and stimulating environment for young minds to grow and develop.
The College is now well on its way to offering a complete program, when it will have in 2020 a Kindergarten that will house four-year-olds initially with plans for a second stage of development to expand. Congratulations to Gilson College on this special occasion, which was coordinated by MC - Mr Len Farquharson and also attended by representatives from Adventist Schools Victoria, Kneeler Design Architects and Australian Building Enterprise Pty Ltd. We thank all the staff, teachers and students who contributed to make the day a success. (Photo on page 5 and Kindergarten location map on page 11)

If you wish for your child to have a fundraiser at school, please ensure
that you contact the Heads of School for permission.
PB4L HOME MATRIXTo further help support our
students in becoming respectful, responsible and resilient members of society, we are proud to announce that we now have an, ‘at home expected behaviour matrix’. This was developed by a wonderful team of parents from our school. The Matrix outlines for our families the expected behaviours that we should be seeing throughout the home. To help support your child, we would love it if you could spend some time going over and teaching these behaviours at home. If you have

MOUNT STIRLING / MOUNT BULLER TRIP 2019 - AIDAN MAI
After days of preparation and training for the following trip, we precisely arrived at school at 6:00pm, after loading our luggage into the trailer our epic adventure was just getting started. The trip to our first destination was an exciting and memorable experience which took a total of three and a half hours to reach, once we had arrived we began unloading and settling into a warm cozy cottage. The night was full of
games, excitement and fun but ended early as we had to wake up at 6:00 in the morning to be ready for the adventure that awaited us, Mount Stirling. After finishing breakfast and packing the items we would need up in the

mountains we were on our way. We arrived at the base of the mountain, where we rented our gear for the terrain ahead. Soon after, we hopped on to what looked like a tour bus which took us up to the mountains and showed the beauty nature has to offer, it was a surreal experience which was hard to take in as coming with a school group and being able to have an opportunity such as this one with everyone was truly magnificent. We stopped at a welcoming shelter where we were debriefed about the things that would happen on this camp. Such as, teamwork, staying together and the road that we will face ahead.
Shortly after, we started to hike our way up to the next base camp which again was such a time to enjoy and take in the intricacies that nature provided. The snow was lower than it was compared to the other years although, that issue did not matter as we climbed higher up on the mountain where we reached our first base camp.
The satisfaction of reaching any destination is a feeling none can be used too, to see the tents that were laid out already, the campfire which we imagined would lit up at night and the amazing tents which provided two bunk beds in each. This event was something so special we knew it
would not last forever so every hour was spent to the fullest of our ability. Soon after reaching our camp and settling in we planned to reach the summit of Mount Stirling, what a sight it was seeing the top of clouds, the mountains beyond, the grand view that money could never buy. It fills me up with excitement everytime I look back at it, definitely one of the greatest occurrences throughout the whole trip.
We came down from the summit and spent the night in the main tent, where we had a home cooked vegan pasta full of love which will always rival any pasta I'll ever have. After eating, we played many riddles which tricked us all but we had a great time solving them together as a team.
The next day as we headed out and packed up our belongings we headed for the base of the mountain but instead went the opposite way getting to the summit again and descending from there. We soon stopped by another hut, where we had a blast having a snowball fight and then headed our way down after spending a 48 hours up in Mount Stirling. The relief and gratification which came afterwards was just an amazing feeling as we had finished the hard part of the trip. Soon after we arrived at a caravan park each of

us were sent into our rooms, we were able to shower and relax and that night had a fulfilling dinner at the pub which we all thoroughly enjoyed. We went to sleep and then came the next day Mount Buller!
We all had a decision to make to either ski or snowboard, I personally love snowboarding more so that was my choice which was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life, getting geared up, going up ski lifts and snowboard down the smooth hills we could not get enough of it. I ended up getting better every time I went down each course, the ski lifts never got boring instead better every time, I now think about snowboarding everyday and have an urge to go again which shows how great of an opportunity this camp was. After six hours of constant falling, fun and excitement it was time to head home which took a few hours but we were all glad we had done something hard and even better coming back in one piece! Photos on the College Facebook Page - and Instagram.
