Our return to God for Blessings onSunday, January 7, 2018
Stewardship Thought: “Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” - John 1:38 What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can only be found by spending time with God? Take time, each day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.

MISS BEHAVIOR SEARCHES FOR SYMBOLS
Dear Miss Behavior: Sometimes you speak of symbols or say that something is sym-bolic of something else. Could you elaborate? Thank you. Sincerely,
Curious Reader
Dear CR: A symbol is an object, a picture, or other tangible item that suggests something else. Our flag symbolizes our country, a rose suggests love, and a red cross with equal sides represents an international relief agency. The Catholic Church uses sym-bols extensively. For example, a crucifix symbolizes Jesus’ death and resurrection. A cross on top of a church steeple tells passers-by that this is a Christian church. Think of the symbols we often see in stained-glass windows, where a circle symbol-izes infinity, and an equilateral triangle may remind us of the Trinity. When saints are depicted in art, they often carry in their hands symbols connected to their lives; for example, St. Peter usually holds a set of keys; Jesus told Peter he was pre-senting him with the “keys of the kingdom,” symbolizing Pe-ter’s authority to lead the Church. The candles that we light at Mass remind us that Christ is the light of the world. I am sure that you can think of many other symbols. Most sym-bols are shared by an entire group of people, but I think it is also possible to have private symbols. Perhaps a painting or a design or a souvenir is symbolic for you. I think this is worth thinking about further. Until next time,
Miss Behavior
SAINT OF THE WEEK: SAINT SEBASTIAN
What we know about Saint Sebastian comes to us from legend. He is said to have been born in Naronne, Gaul (France) circa 256, served in the Roman army about 283, and supported the marytrs Marcellian and Marcus. Sebastian made many converts, including Nicostratus, who was in charge of prisoners, and Nicostratus’s wife Zoe, a deaf mute cured by Sebastian. He performed other miracles as well. Both the Emperor Diocletian and Emperor Maximian appointed Sebastian captain in the praetorian guards, though neither knew that Sebastian was a Christian. When his Christian identity was revealed, Sebastian was sentenced to death. His body was pierced by arrows, but the widow of St. Castulus retrieved his body and nursed him back to health. Not long after, Sebastian denounced the emperor for his persecution of Christians. Sebastian was then beaten to death, as the emperor had ordered. We can be relatively certain that Sebastian was a martyr and that he was venerated as early as the fourth century; the rest of his life is uncertain. Many artists, including Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini, have depicted Sebastian being pierced by arrows. Our saint died circa 288. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, athletes, and soldiers. We celebrate his feast on January 20.
