MISS BEHAVIOR

Dear Miss Behavior:

Today is Veterans Day. Is it appropriate to commemorate this day in our liturgy?

Sincerely,

Justa Parishioner Dear JP:

There are sacred holidays and secular holidays, and sometimes they fall on the same day. November 11 is now called Veterans Day, but originally it was called Armistice Day, since it was on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, November 11, 1918, that the Armistice was signed that officially ended World War I, a particularly tragic and, to me, incomprehensible war.

We Christians live in the sacred world and in the secular world as well. We can focus on today’s readings, which speak of poverty and generosity, as well as give tribute to those who lost their lives in war and who served their country in peacetime. I think it is appropriate to include prayers for veterans in the Universal Prayer and to sing a hymn or two that speaks to our country’s observance of this special day, for example, the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” or our national hymn, “God of Our Fathers.”

We are Christians, and we are Americans. We live in the secular world and in the sacred world. We live in time as well as in eternity. Happy Veterans Day, and Happy 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time!

Sincerely,

Miss Behavior

SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI

The first American citizen to be declared a saint, Maria Francesca Cabrini was born in Italy on July 15, 1850. Her first goal was to be a teacher, but when she was eighteen she decided to become a nun. Two religious communities rejected her, but in 1875 Monsignor Serrati asked her to manage the House of Providence, an orphanage in the town of Codogno. Unfortunately, the founder of the orphanage opposed this move, and eventually the orphanage was closed. The Bishop of Todi then gave Frances permission to establish a new order, and so she began the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, whose mission it was to educate young girls. This order spread to other Italian cities, and in 1889 Frances sailed to New York City to work with Italian immigrants. For twenty-seven years, she traveled and established schools, hospitals, orphanages, and convents. Frances Xavier Cabrini, also known as Mother Cabrini, became an American citizen in 1909, died in Chicago in 1917, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Many schools and hospitals bear her name. In 1950 the pope named St. Frances Xavier Cabrini the patron of immigrants. We celebrate her feast on November 13.
