F P ’ D “Introductory Rites: Something Much More than ‘Hello’ or ‘Good Day’”

Dear Friends, Let’s meticulously forge onward through the parts of this most beautiful reality that we can enjoy nearly every day of our lives: the Holy Mass. Last week, we began the introductory portions of the Mass. Let us not forget that most of these beginning movements and gestures are to remind us of the presence of Christ in the Holy Mass. The priest reverences the altar, a sign that we have arrived at the threshold of the Divine. Then, we are reminded of Christ again with the priest’s arrival at the Chair, a symbol of the teaching and governing authority of Christ who remains with us through the Church. Now, let us begin with the dialogue that takes place immediately after the sign of the cross. It is, properly speaking, part of the introductory rites and not just a simple salutation or greeting. Among the changes in the English translation of the Roman Missal (3rd Edition) that took place a few years back, perhaps none was more greatly felt than the exchange of “and also with you” for “and with your spirit.” At first, this may have been the most awkward change that the new translation provided, saying “and with your spirit” in response to the priest’s words, “The Lord be with you.” This, however, is a great learning moment for all of us, as it provides for us an insight to the depth of the liturgy. We never say “and with your spirit” in common speak, which is why at first it was a little strange. It is something uniquely liturgical. It is not meant to be a simple exchange of pleasantries, as if the priest were merely saying, “Well, hello, I hope you are doing well,” to which one would respond “and the same to you.” “And with your spirit” is a formula that has been used by the Church for generations. Where does this dialogue come from? Well, according to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), “The response et cum spiritu tuo is found in the Liturgies of both East and West, from the earliest days of the Church. One of the first instances of its use is found in the Traditio Apostolica of Saint Hippolytus, composed in Greek around AD 215.” It also appears in the fourth century when St. John Chrysostom in homily said: “If the Holy Spirit were not in our Bishop [referring to Bishop Flavian of Antioch] when he gave the peace to all shortly before ascending to his holy sanctuary, you would not have replied to him all together, ‘And with your spirit’. This is why you reply with this expression not only when he ascends to the sanctuary, nor when he preaches to you, nor when he prays for you, but when he stands at this holy altar, when he is about to offer this awesome sacrifice. . . And with your spirit, reminding yourselves by this reply that he who is here does nothing of his own power, nor are the offered gifts the work of human nature, but is it the grace of the Spirit present and hovering over all things which prepared that mystic sacrifice.” With this in mind, we are trying to identify Christ, the Eternal High Priest, in the celebrating priest. We must be clear here, by highlighting the dignity of the priesthood we are highlighting its reference solely towards Christ and not the person acting in Persona Christi. Therefore, this dialogue between the priest and the people of “The Lord be with you,” and its corresponding “And with your spirit,” is another way of acknowledging that this is Christ’s Mass, not Father so-and-so’s Mass. The attitude and figure of the priest in the Mass and those assisting at it, whether he is tall or short, engaging or not, must continually be one like that of St. John the Baptist: “the priest must decrease so that He (Christ the True High Priest) may increase.” As Sacrosanctum Concilium teaches: the Mass is above all “an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree.” (n. 7) Therefore, we recognize from the very beginning of the Mass that it is Christ who is acting through the sacred minister and thus we are moved all the more to say, “And with your spirit.” Obviously, we did not get to the Penitential Rite and Kyrie as advertised, but I think it is well worth our time to move slowly and examine closely the significance of some of the most fundamental parts of the Mass. Thanks for your patience! Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

Feeding Faith Book Club Featured Title 1: From Fire By Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith

(20% off, reg. $22.95) Sohrab Ahmari was a teenager living under the Iranian ayatollahs when he decided that there is no God. Nearly two decades later, he would be received into the Roman Catholic Church. In From Fire, by Water, he recounts this unlikely passage, from the strident Marxism and atheism of a youth misspent on both sides of the Atlantic to a moral and spiritual awakening prompted by the Mass. Mark your calendars for May 4th, when we will welcome Sohrab to Our Lady of Peace Parish to hear him speak. More details to come!

Feeding Faith Book Club Featured Title 2: Arguing Religion: A Bishop Speaks at Facebook and Google

($19.95) Every day, millions of people fight about religion. But very few know how to have a good religious argument—a rational, respectful, and productive exchange of differing views. Bishop Robert Barron, one of the leading Catholic figures in the world and among the most active on social media, has enjoyed thousands of fruitful religious arguments. In this book based on talks delivered at Facebook and Google, he explains why religion at its best opens up the searching mind, and how we all can share better discussions about God.
