Second Sunday of Lent (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Mountains feature prominently in Scripture as places to encounter God. Jesus takes the disciples up the mountain to pray, and it is in this context of prayer that we read St. Luke’s account of the Transfiguration. The Lord is transfigured while praying and Moses and Elijah appear in glory, conversing with Him. What do they talk about? His passion that will happen soon in Jerusalem. Tradition holds that the Transfiguration took place forty days before Good Friday.

Meanwhile, the disciples have fallen asleep. Perhaps this is the evangelist’s way of telling us that the disciples want to hear about the glory but not the cross. Unless we are firmly rooted in prayer, the cross is hard to bear. And so, Peter offers to build three tents, to prolong the glory. St. Luke tells us “he did not know what he was saying” (Lk 9:33). The cloud of the presence of God covers them, and the voice of the Father commands: “This is my chosen Son; listen to Him.” (Lk 9:35)

This Lent let us persevere in prayer that we may be open to the voice of God and listen to Christ, even when following Him leads to the cross. God bless you!

Fr. Luis

P.S. A generous donor has offered to match ten donors who will give $100 each to the ABCD campaign. Please help us reach our goal.

Ayúdenos a alcanzar nuestra meta.

Transformed into His body We continue our journey through Lent with the desire to

prepare ourselves to be renewed for the Easter season; and

we feel the certainty that what Paul the Apostle announces

will be fulfilled in us if we allow Him to “change our lowly body

to conform with His glorified body,” making our life

resplendent with his light, enlightening and guiding those

who need it the most.

Pope Francis reminds us that “When the love of Christ

transfigures the lives of the saints in spirit, body and soul,

they give praise to God.” As we well know, we are all called to

be saints from our Baptism. Therefore, let us praise the Lord

through our good works, sharing talent time and money with

those who seek the way that will lead them to contemplate

God’s glory. (To be continued)

compartiendo nuestro talento, nuestro tiempo y nuestro

The Blesseds /Los Beatos BLESSED RAFAELA YBARRA DE VILALLONGA — born

in Bilbao in 1843 to an affluent family, she was married to José Vilallonga, was the mother of seven children, and carried out her family duties in conjunction with a rich spiritual life lived in charity.

She dedicated herself to protecting and caring for girls and young women who were exposed to the dangers inherent to poverty and ignorance in the industrial climate of the end of the 19th century. She gave herself completely to those suffering in that environment: young women and girls, gathering them from the street, and creating homes and vocational schools for their advancement.

In 1894, Rafaela and three enthusiastic young women pledged to serve as mothers and educators of the poor. As

their mission was similar to that of the Guardian Angels, they adopted that name for their new foundation. Blessed Rafaela died in 1900, her congregation not yet firmly established. By 2011, the congregation had 35 houses spread over Spain and the Americas. She was beatified in 1984 by St. John Paul II.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa

Lenten Message 2019 “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the

children of God” (Rm 8: 19)

When we live as children of God, redeemed, led by the

Holy Spirit (cf. Rom 8:14) and capable of acknowledging

and obeying God’s law, beginning with the law written on

our hearts and in nature, we also benefit creation by

cooperating in its redemption. That is why Saint Paul

says that creation eagerly longs for the revelation of the

children of God; in other words, that all those who enjoy

the grace of Jesus’ paschal mystery may experience its

fulfilment in the redemption of the human body

itself….Yet in this world, the harmony generated by redemption is

constantly threatened by the negative power of sin and death.
