N uestra mirada se dirige hoy al tema de "la llamada de Dios" como elemento que unifica la liturgia. La llamada

se dirige primero a Abraham. Lo invita a salir de su erra, a dejar a la espalda las apoyaturas humanas y a confiarse entera y filialmente en el Señor y en su promesa: "en bendeciré todas las familias del mundo". La llamada se dirige también a Timoteo por medio de Pablo: "toma parte en los duros trabajos del evangelio con la fuerza que Dios te dé". Es esencial en la vida del cris ano "tomar parte en la vida de Cristo", especialmente en su misterio pascual: muerte y resurrección. Pero esta llamada de Dios en Cristo se hace más evidente en el evangelio: Cristo llama a Pedro, San ago y Juan a subir a una montaña alta y los invita a "tomar parte" en la transfiguración. Poco después los llama a descender del monte y a emprender decididos el camino de Jerusalén, camino de la Pasión.

La historia de Abraham muestra claramente que es Dios quien toma la inicia va en relación con la vocación de los hom-bres.

Abraham es un personaje importante en la teología de la historia. Es el hombre de la promesa, el hombre dócil a la inicia-

va de Dios. El hombre que se deja guiar por la Voluntad salvífi-ca de Dios por encima de sus proyectos personales. Sale de su

erra confiando sólo en la promesa de Dios. Su ac tud es de una obediencia y confianza absolutas.

Por su fidelidad Abraham se convierte en sí mismo en una ben-dición de Dios. Se hace de algún modo don de sí mismo para los demás, bendición de Dios para los pueblos.

Los apóstoles descubren con nueva claridad que en Cristo habita la plenitud de la divinidad, que Él es verdadero hombre y verdadero Dios.

El hombre está invitado a descubrir en el rostro de Cristo el amor humano-divino del redentor. Está invitado a descubrir, como los apóstoles en el Tabor, que "es muy bueno permanecer junto a Él". Está invitado como San Pablo a hacer experiencia de aquel que "me amó y se entregó a sí mismo por mí". El hom-bre que desea comprenderse a fondo a sí mismo, debe mirar a Cristo y en sus hermanos contemplar y descu-brir el rostro de Cristo.

L I S T E N T O J E S U S . . .

T he main message spoken by God the Father is intended to guide us on our forty-day journey through this holy

season: "This is my chosen Son, listen to him" (Mt 17: 5; Mk 9: 7; : 35). If we wish to turn away from sin and be more firmly rooted in the gospel, the spir-itual purpose for Lent as given on Ash Wednes-day (Mk 1:15), and if we wish to grow in holi-ness and be well-prepared to celebrate the Triduum, par cularly Easter, the best way to do is to spend Lent listening to Jesus.

To listen to Jesus is what God wants. God the Father rarely speaks in the gospels, only twice. Because his words are so few, and because they are so momentous, we should sit up and

take no ce. The Father's first statement at Jesus' bap sm explains who Jesus is: "This is my Beloved Son," and his sec-ond and final statement at the Transfigura on explains how the Father wants us to respond to His Son: "Listen to Him."

The Transfigura on account confirms the teaching au-thority of Jesus. Jesus stood between Moses, the Word of the Law symbolized by the two tablets of the Ten Command-ments, and Elijah, the Word of Prophecy symbolized by a scroll or a book. By standing with Jesus, Moses and Elijah endorsed his teaching mission and transferred their lead roles to law-giver and prophet to him. Jesus is the Word (John 1: 1), and the proper response is to listen to him.

Please, listen to Jesus every day this Lent. It is easy to do. Open the Bible, read the gospel passage, and reflect on it. Go to Mass, pay careful a en on to the readings, and listen to the homily. Set aside quiet me for prayer, and lis-ten to Jesus speak to your heart. Watch a movie like Jesus of Nazareth or The Passion, and listen to what he says and does. Do some spiritual reading and listen to Jesus speak through the author. Be kind to another and listen to Je-sus speak through your neighbor. Please, listen to Je-sus and have a good Lent.

The Bible tells us that "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wicked-ness in the heavenly plac-es." (Ephesians 6:12). We are daily in a spiritual battle and we need the help of God through prayer. The prayer is the power and will of God, accessible to us. We should never forget that Jesus our Lord and Savior preceeded everything He did with prayer. As Christians it's our privileged to follow our Lord's example and pray for others worldwide. Join our prayer team and help us to show God's love to those in need worldwide through prayer!

La Biblia nos dice que "nuestra lucha no es contra la carne y la sangre, sino contra los Principados, contra Potestades, contra los Dominadores de este mundo tenebroso, contra los Es-píritus del Mal que están en las alturas" (Efesios 6:12). Estamos diariamente en una batalla espiritual y necesitamos la ayuda de Dios por medio de la oración. La oración es el poder y la voluntad de Dios, accesible para nosotros. Nunca debemos olvidar que Jesús nuestro Señor y Salvador precedió todo lo que Él hizo con la oración.
